Breaking the tradition... contest – that people tend to vote for someone just because they are more established than the other without looking really at their platforms or track records, so to speak. In this light could we deprive ourselves of a supposed leader whom we really can trust and whom we really can depend on, as we on the election track chose the name who rang a bell in our minds during that split-second decision in the voting table. This should remind us that sometimes the people’s choice isn’t always the right choice. That sometimes what is essential are the things we are not able to see – an underlying cause of those who would really want to serve us and not only take the position just as it is. On ideal platforms. It might be enticing to hear or read those platforms that seems too good to be true, lest be accomplished. Maybe it has been a part of politics, or that it has been a tradition of politicians to sugarcoat problems and offer platforms
from page 4
that seems a little too idealistic. Platforms will be platforms but after the elections, after winning, will those platforms be turned into projects that would eventually turn into something the student body can really feel? Do you remember platforms of the past campaigns that really materialized? Well, one could say quite a few, considering that a term is as only good for a year, but looking at it a bigger picture, not all of it. Reasons are reasons, as it could be but promises are only promises. You can say that promises are meant to be broken but then students, as voters, deserve to get what they are promised to receive. As vanguards of change, it is in ourselves that we stop the traditional politics that we ourselves have started. No matter how much we hate traditional politics in the national election, it seems that it has proliferated into the hearts of the students. That it slowly creeping into the integrity of education that we are learning and lurking into the dark abyss of the normed politics. M

Breaking the tradition of politics You know the election season is in the air if you see campaign posters everywhere, hear platforms being raved upon by opposing parties and candidates while introducing themselves through mnemonic schemes during class hours and often seen around the campus wearing their campaign IDs. Two parties consisting of fairly different people with the promise of confidence and desire to give the best service to the studentry. Two parties trying to reach out to us and ask for our vote for them to secure their names in our ballots – to try to win their slot in the Student Central Council (SCC) next school year, and ultimately, to serve the student body. As we get to know the set of candidates trying to win us over, smu.themarian@gmail.com
we also get to know the different sides of all the corners of this coming elections. We eventually get to realize that over and over the years, little by little do we see the turnover of officers to the next and their ideals and, might as well, their problems. Over and over do we get to see the same set of problems, broken promises, idealistic platforms, popularity contests, the lack of transparency and the like.

must they also be able to see that the election proper must also be in accord in a systemic manner, but also during the term of the elected officers, that they must be able to see that all the officers’ due responsibilities are acted upon with due diligence. On name-building Just like the upcoming national elections, names are names – the bigger, the better; the more popular you are, the more votes you’re going to receive, therefore, the more the chances of winning. It is with any undeniable doubt that fame is an inevitable factor when it comes to receiving votes. Elections, through time, has become merely a popularity
