The idea for Docks4Rent was born after I had to continually find dock space to rent to handle my 26-foot boat and would go from local marina to local marina as continually looked for better prices. After many years for going from marina to marina and the cost at $14 per foot, I found a rental property owner who offered me to tie up at his home for $11 per foot which saved me $78 per month. About a year later a friend of mine from church said I could tie off at his home and charged me a minimal monthly rate as he had a lift and dock space that was not being used as he just sold his boat. For the next few months cruising through the canals across Southwest Florida, we spotted countless empty private docks and boat slips behind all these waterfront homes. Being a big fan of AirBnB, Lift and Uber, I began to ponder a way to efficiently connect boaters with people who have extra dock space in their backyard. By cutting out the middleman (marinas), homeowners could make some extra money and boat-owners save a bundle. Seemed like a no-brainer. So, did this service already exist? I found many listings on Craigslist and a couple other sites that focused on marina-listing and found very few private docks for rent from private home owners. The downside of these sites was that they all charged a fee to post a listing – regardless of whether the dock is ever rented out. I worked with a friend of mine and dove into building an accessible service where dock owners could list for free. And with that, Docks4Rent.com was launched! Peer-to-peer “sharing” marketplaces offer a great alternative to commercial marinas and paid classified ads. Aside from the nice cost-savings, Docks4Rent enables a “gig economy” in which homeowners create a new stream of income without having to spend much time or effort. History of the pier: Bradenton’s Memorial Pier dates back to 1878. The pier building was erected in 1928, and in the 1930s was officially dedicated to honoring 21 young men from Manatee County who died in WW1. Over the next five decades, the two story Memorial Pier building would be used for a variety of functions, both public and private. The large riverfront second floor was the social scene for dances and events (currently The Grand Ballroom at PIER 22). The ground floor was used as a warehouse for freight from steamers coming into Tampa, until the mid 1940s. Then, a portion of the building became the first home of the South Florida Museum. The Manatee County Chamber of Commerce also resided here for 34 years, along with Manatee County’s first radio station which began broadcasting in 1946. In 1974, Don Miller Development Corporation acquired the old building from the city, and considered tearing it down. They soon realized, however, that the architectural and historic value of this Bradenton landmark must be preserved. Meticulous restoration of the pier building lasted two years. The Miller family has taken great measures to ensure the building’s historic style and integrity remain intact while surrounding the pier with a modern and luxurious 225 wet slip marina.
