SOUTHAMPTON STORIES
Southampton has a rich medieval and maritime history that creates a wealth of stories told across generations. Well known for its connection with the Titanic and remaining visible history with the Bargate Monument and Old Town Walls, you don’t need to go far before you uncover another moment in history. From the Bargate Monument to Town Quay, you’ll discover Southampton’s Old Town. Here you’ll find a history-lovers playground. Once a medieval gatehouse Southampton’s most iconic monument the Bargate, now acts as a gateway to the Old Town. This area of the city has over 90 listed buildings and more than 30 ancient monuments, with medieval wine vaults, an array of medieval churches, and fine Georgian houses and hotels.
Holy Rood church is another distinct landmark on the corner of Bernard Street, it was bombed in WW2 and the 13-tonne anchor from Southampton’s famous cruise liner, QE2 takes pride of place in front of the church which is dedicated to the sailors of the Merchant Navy. It’s not just the moments in time but the people that make Southampton so special. Jane Austen spent three periods of her life in Southampton; as a schoolgirl, as a young woman and as an adult when she, her mother and sister lived with her brother Frank Austen in a house near Southampton Castle. Southampton’s royal connections include Henry II who landed in Southampton in 1174, dressed as a pilgrim. In 1343 Edward III gave the bottom end of the city to his wife Queen Phillipa to start her new school, Queens College Oxford. Which is why the city has Oxford Street, College Street, John Street and Queens Park. 20

SPECIAL EVENT
1620 - 2020
Mayf lower 400
The 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower from the UK to the New World takes place this year 2020. In 1620 the Pilgrims chartered the Mayflower to sail to the New World to escape religious oppression in England. They also bought a smaller boat the Speedwell, which was originally built in Southampton. Southampton was chosen as the rendezvous point for the voyage to America. The Mayflower sailed from London with about 70 people on board and arrived in Southampton about the 29th July where others joined her. The Speedwell was being refitted in Holland and began its journey on 1st August from Delft Haven near Rotterdam with less than 50 passengers aboard. On arrival at Southampton the ship had to have another refit at West Quay with money the Pilgrims could ill afford. As a result the group had to sell some of their belongings, food and stores, to pay Southampton its harbour and other dues. The party from both ships spent nearly two weeks in Southampton. At least one Southampton resident, John Alden, joined the emigrants as a cooper and it is possible that other Southampton families joined the Pilgrims at this time. The Speedwell and the Mayflower eventually sailed from Southampton for the New World on the 15th August 1620. Unfortunately The Speedwell begun to leak and was deemed too unreliable to attempt the crossing so all the people and stores transferred to the Mayflower. Keep up to date of Mayflower 400 events at www.visitsouthampton.co.uk/mayflower-400

WALK THE TITANIC TRAIL
SOUTHAMPTON WILL FOREVER BE ASSOCIATED WITH THE NAME OF RMS TITANIC. The pride of the White Star line began her ill-fated journey from Southampton taking hundreds of local residents with her as members of her crew. 2012 marked the centenary of the tragic sinking of the ship and it was the year SeaCity Museum opened its doors to the public. START your Titanic trail at SeaCity Museum and explore the city’s historic connections with the ship. When you leave the museum, head for the Above Bar Street and ornate Titanic Engineer Officers’ Memorial in East Park (opposite the Cenotaph) unveiled in 1914 featuring a seven-foot high angel. Head down the QE2 Mile to Holy Rood Church and see the Titanic Crew Memorial, which was paid for by the subscriptions of friends and family of the crew.

Oxford Street is where to head to next, passing the former Sailors Home (now Salvation Army Centre). Stop in the Grapes pub which dates to the 1850’s. Four members of the Titanic’s crew, including three brothers named Slade, famously stayed here too long on the morning of the ship’s departure. They arrived at the quayside as the ship was about to leave and were refused entry. Close by is the impressive South Western House, formerly a hotel where many of the wealthy guests stayed the night before the Titanic sailed. The Grand Cafe is situated in this historic building and a perfect stop for refreshments and to soak up the atmosphere of a bygone era. Finally walk down Canute Road to the Canute chambers, the former headquarters of the White Star Line, and see where the Southampton families anxiously gathered to await news of their loved ones.

COASTAL EXPLORATION Southampton is a maritime city offering access to life on the ocean wave! Whether you’re enjoying a stroll along the waterfront, taking in the views of the Solent while enjoying a bite to eat, or heading out on the water yourself, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy this coastal city. There’s nothing quite like watching those big ships when they are coming in and out of Southampton port. At Mayflower Park you can get up close to the liners, you’ll also find special events taking place throughout the year to celebrate the naming and arrival of new ships. One of the best ways to view the cruise ships is to join them on the water. Blue Funnel Cruises offer a variety of day cruises from Town Quay including Harbour Tours, River Cruises, Solent Cruises and a range of dinner and party options. The Hythe Ferry passes alongside the QEII Terminal offering a unique and close up experience of the magnificent liners. With superb views and easy access to the Solent, it’s no surprise that Southampton’s sailing scene is a huge part of this city’s life. You can even get out on the water on an organised boat tour with Blue Funnel Cruises, or learn to sail yourself with Southampton Water Activities Centre (SWAC). If you’re a bit of a thrill-seeker then you’ll want to try a RIB charter experience with Seadogz who run exhilarating RIB adventures all year round. Southampton is also home to the oldest active cargo-passenger steamship in Europe, the SS Sheildhall, with a cruise programme running between May and September for those who prefer a more gentle experience. A unique feature of the Solent is Calshot Spit, a mile-long sand and shingle bank that protrudes into Southampton water. A great spot to wave off those lucky cruise passengers, it’s home to Calshot Activities Center where you can try your hand at sailing, kite-surfing and other water-based activities. It’s also the base of the National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) Tower and Calshot RNLI Lifeboat Station, 36
