The Marquee Seniors
Ironically enough, I’ve never been much of a writer myself, so composing my letter to the senior class was a challenge for me.
Reminding the 2023 Senior class of their battle with Covid quarantines, AP classes, and submitting college applications made me feel like a broken record. We all remember the trials and tribulations of high school, but the important thing is that we made it.
Some made it with straight A’s; others with straight C’s. Some with the same group of friends they've had since middle school; others with people they met just last semester. Some with excitement for their future; others with hesitancy. No matter where you are in your journey, I assure you there is much more to come.
Congratulations to the senior Class of 2023, thank you for reading, skimming, or maybe just taking a moment to look at the design.
Sincerely,
Alex Thornfelt Editor in Chiefcover Alex Thornfelt senior edition

Muna Nnamani“I feel like I failed.”
I stared at my text with red eyes. An hour earlier, I opened the decision letter for my dream college, just to read the words “I am very sorry to inform you” at the top.
Seventeen years of my hardest work. School years and summers spent neglecting my emotions in the name of extracurriculars and practice tests. Sacrificing time with my family and friends, just to bump my grades up a few points, and it wasn’t good enough. I wasn’t smart enough.
I spent an hour mentally self-destructing on my bedroom floor. Then I texted Zee.
Zee is my older brother — but he’s also my best friend.
I was born exactly one year and eleven days after him. Once my parents brought me home from the hospital, he started spending all his free time standing over my crib and “talking” to me.
Before he was big enough, he would
When we immigrated to America, we’d mimic our preschool teachers’ mannerisms because there was nothing funnier to us than being called “sweetie” or “honey”. On any given day, we would make our parents buy cake and candles so that we could sing “Happy Birthday” for nobody in particular. The weekly parties didn’t make sense to anybody else, but they didn’t need to.
We would stay up all night in our bunk beds playing on my DS and making incoherent jokes. Childhood consisted of sunny Saturdays spent playing computer games in the library and then walking to the dollar store to buy candy.
When we got older, the video games turned into drives around town and midnight conversations. When my mental
I told him to call me later and went back to bed.
And for most of senior year, I ignored how my best friend lived several states away. I barely thought about how as we neared adulthood, our friendship would change — because I didn’t want it to.
But now, I’m about to leave for college, just like he did last year. I’ve come
try to carry me around the house to help out my mom. And before he could even properly articulate words, he had a constant nickname for me: Nne, which means “child” in our native language.
As a kid, I had a hard time making friends. I didn’t always understand social cues or know the right thing to say. But with Zee, I was always enough as myself. I was always Nne.
health plummeted during quarantine, he sat on my bedroom floor with me at 2 am and gave me reasons to keep trying.
I’ve never known what it’s like to be without a friend, because I’ve always had Zee.
The day he left for college marked another chapter. He was loaded down with bags and in a rush to get to the airport with my parents. I was half asleep and not ready to face my grief — so I didn’t.
to peace with leaving my friends, because I know that outgrowing friends is natural.
But I never want to outgrow my brother.
I’m not good at telling people that I love them. That’s why I rarely tell my brother that he is the kindest, funniest person I know. And that when it felt like everybody in my life was walking away, he was always there, sitting on my bedroom floor and helping me sort out my mind.
Over seventeen years, I made and lost friends. I switched personalities and tried on different goals like outfits, but this friendship never changed. And I’m scared that as we enter adulthood and get busier, it will become a memory.
But the past year showed me that even though we’re hours away, I will still text to see how his week was. We’ll still count down the days until the next visit. He’ll still always be up for a phone call.
That’s why when I thought life was over because I didn’t get into a college, I told him I needed to talk.
Two seconds later, he texted back.
“Let me call you.”
I’ve never known what it’s like to be without a friend, because I’ve always had Zee.
I spent an hour mentally selfdestructing on my bedroom floor.
Not in my head story
Aishani Raju“It’s all in your head,” the doctor repeated. I gripped the white exam table paper, trying not to double over in pain listening to him say: “You just need to change your diet and sleep pattern.” When he left, I looked at the white sheet under me—it was torn to pieces.
When most people go to the doctor, they’re hoping nothing’s wrong. But for a full year, as I shuffled from specialist to specialist, I desperately searched the technician’s face as she smeared the cold blue ultrasound gel over my stomach, or as she eyed the spikes on the EKG
such extreme and visible fatigue that my teacher once offered to let me sleep in class. It was a world away from how I would normally take on my days.
Instead of constant fatigue, I would roll through my days with bundles of energy. My free time was spent cheerfully with friends and teachers instead of finding a place to rest.
My journey through ill health
and listened to podcasts about mental health. I felt calmer, but my stomach pain intensified until I was writhing in bed. My mom rushed me to the hospital, and the next thing I knew I was having a scope of my intestines.
When I woke up, everything was blurry and bright and the doctor told my mom that they had found the physical problem.
“Did I get this from stress?” I immediately asked. When he said “no,” I became so euphoric.
I took pictures with the nurses, still loopy from the anesthesia. There was finally a cause and a treatment plan for my unexplainable pain. It wasn’t all in my head.
My health journey through my sophomore and junior year taught me to trust myself and never again doubt my own perception of the world . I wrote a column my junior year about how my health journey redefined life. Soon students in my classes started to open up to me after reading it.
monitor, hoping for some indication that she had found something wrong with me.
In my sophomore year, I developed severe, unexplained symptoms: constant sharp, burning stomach pain like knives stabbing the underside of my belly and
was physically exhausting, but more importantly, mentally draining. Every test was negative. The more they told me I was anxious, the more anxious I grew.
I believed that the pain was all in my head.
If I had created it, then I could defeat it. I meditated, read self-help books
I saw myself as a voice for students who struggle with health issues. Rather than being controlled by my flare-ups, I discovered ways to vocalize mine and other people’s journeys. What I once saw as a future filled with uncertainty about my health was replaced with empowering myself and others through our stories.
I believed that the pain was all in my head. If I had created it, then I could defeat it.
Finding your passion
story Emily CouchWhen I was a little kid I wanted to be a ballerina and a spy. That was before I realized that I can’t dance and I’m about as sneaky as a spider on roller skates. In 3rd grade, I wanted to be a chef. My life’s goal was to be on “Chopped Junior”,
but then I discovered that I was way too anxious to be able to successfully make a gourmet dish out of cow tongue and Jello in 20 minutes.
As I grew up, I wanted to do a million
It was like in the flip of a switch the silly little kid answers of future dreams were no longer acceptable — I had to actually know what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
The wild journey of finding what I wanted to do was a trainwreck. Freshman year, I thought I could be a therapist. Then I realized that I’d have to deal with other people’s problems. Sophomore year, I was stir crazy from COVID and just wanted to get out of the house. My idea then was to be a barista in Europe so I could travel and have coffee. A master plan.
Junior year, I discovered that I could literally get paid to be something called a “dog transport nanny” and emotionally support dogs during flights. It felt like a win-win. Hanging out with dogs and traveling. The only problem was, I wanted to make bank.
different things, but had no idea what would actually stick. I was that one kid in the class who had been in soccer, basketball, a boys baseball team, softball, art, theater, choir and basically any other after school activity you can think of. But once I got into high school, people started wanting a legitimate answer as to what I wanted to do. Despite hours of soul searching, I was stumped.
Determined to find an answer, I would sit in my room, staring at the purple walls, begging the universe for a sign.
That was when I finally discovered it: I could be a nurse. I was set. The mental confetti cannon exploded. No adults would judge, saying I needed a grown up job. And I could travel. And I could make bank. It was a win-win-win situation –even better than the dog nanny job.
Now look, if you’re still worried about what you want to do with your life, do not fret. There are a lot more people out there with less of a clue than you. You’ve got to break a couple eggs before you find the golden idea of what you want to do. Be patient with yourself.
What you definitely don’t want to do is jump into something you know nothing about just because you wanted to get the big bucks. Because suddenly, four years of schooling later, you’re twiddling your thumbs behind a pharmacist desk at CVS, handing someone hemorrhoid cream. Nothing against pharmacists, it just could never be me. Do things you legitimately want to do that will make you happy.
Nothing’s ever going to happen perfectly. Look at what you want to do and do that. It’s that simple.
You’ve got to break a couple eggs before you find the golden idea of what you want to do.
What I wish I'd known
story Roslyn DobbinsI’m not going to try and tell you that high school was the best experience ever. For some people it was, but for others it felt like drinking bad milk. Sour and unpleasant. Most of my years here have been the latter. It’s a struggle trying to navigate your teenage years dealing with homework, relationships, hormonesand planning for your future. With all that in mind here are my God honest tips to make high school less miserable. Or at least as honest as I can be while still getting the thumbs up from the editors.
1. Not everyone is going to like you, no matter how hard you try. Trying to pander to people who refuse to like you, will mean you will lose yourself along the way.
2. Don’t stress so much. Take things step by step, and things tend to work out.
3. Be able to make yourself happy. Relying on others to be happy leads to unhealthy relationships.
4. Acting self-conscious to garner compliments is lame. Be proud of the things you are good at.
5. You will make some big mistakes.
7. People will try to make you feel bad about yourself. Don’t let them.
8. Try new things, even if you are scared. There are so many things I wish I had done but was too nervous.
9. Let yourself feel. These teen years are when people feel lots of emotions, and that’s okay. Learn to address them now, or you’ll be an emotionally immature adult.
10. Don’t rush into relationships. The best connections form as friendships first.
11. Just be a decent person. The things people experience now leave lasting impressions.
But that’s okay because I have too, and so has everyone else.
6. Be open-minded. Just because someone thinks differently doesn’t mean they are wrong.
Fashionably late
story Harrison HamreIf I’m going somewhere, I’m probably running late. It’s not that I don’t respect your time, I just respect mine more.
Now just to clarify, I don’t try to show up late. Generally, I overestimate how much time I have to get things done, hence all my late grades. But if I leave home to go to work, get caught in traffic and show up a couple minutes late, it’s not the end of the world. I won’t get fired for being 2 minutes late, and I won’t make any more money by showing up 5 minutes early.
And any meeting or class I’ve ever attended takes about 5 minutes to actually start. So why would I sprint through the hall to listen to a preamble about my teacher’s weekend escapades before class even starts?
People say you should show up 5 minutes early. Do you know how much I can get done in those 5 minutes? I could use the bathroom or eat a quick snack. I could make a call or try on a different
shirt because the first one looked kind of weird.
In general, if I show up to a place early, I just make awkward small talk or sit around bored on my phone.
Though high school had a rough start for me, things improved a lot this past year, largely because I realized those important things. High school isn’t easy, but there still will be a lot of good times. If you work on improving yourself and the things around you, high school will be an even better experience.
Why would I sit there and throw away 10 minutes just to show someone that I “value their time?”
Time is money, so just like how I wouldn’t give you 5 bucks to make you
like me, I’m not going to be 10 minutes early just to make you like me.
I tend to procrastinate too, but that’s mainly because I do other things that seem more important at the moment, like reorganizing my entire closet and desk before I do my homework. If I really care about something I’ll usually get it done on time, except for all the times that I don’t. Also, sorry to my teachers for not working in your classes. It’s not you, it’s me.
I remember when I figured out that I could just not do my FASTT Math in 3rd grade with minimal consequences. I’ve been a changed man ever since.
I’ve put off countless assignments until the last second, and I only partially regret it. However, I’ve been able to value my own time over inconsequential things, while only bringing minimal consequences to others.
While my lifestyle of cramming and running late may be anxiety inducing to some, I find comfort in it. I’ve had poor time management my whole life, but I’ll work on it later.
From beginning to end
story Garrison AcreeDear eighth-grade Garrison,
I don’t have to tell you about how life-changing high school will be. You’re already wide-eyed and excited, ready for the next four years. You’re ready to start socializing, join all the after-school clubs and finally have your independence. Although the next four years will be awesome in a lot of ways, I can’t promise there won’t be some turbulence.
Most of the people you meet freshman year, for better or worse, you’ll never see again. Your first year of high school is short, you were always told. In 2020 though, it was cut even shorter when that year’s spring break never ended.
Sophomore year wasn’t like anyone was expecting. The entire campus became restricted and distanced, people being forced to stand away from their friends.
Between the lockdowns and the loss of life, you’ll think your peak was bound to be junior year. It was the year you started driving. It was the year you got a job. It was the year you finally started growing up.
In some ways, junior year was a major transition. It was the year back from COVID, a return to normalcy. It was the year that you earned your first officer position in ROTC. You also started to step up on the newspaper staff, earning your first major writing award.
Junior year was also a year of loss.
By the start of senior year, two dogs will have been rehomed, one dog will have died, Grandma will be among the many to be taken by COVID and Dad will be estranged from your family.
The losses of 2022 were one of the defining parts of junior year. Going into senior year though, things were sure to finally be on the upswing. But senior year would be defined by a different kind of loss.
don’t have expectations, and you’ll never be disappointed. But you did have expectations, especially going into senior year. Because of factors both in and out of your control, none of your expectations were met.
High school was supposed to match up with everything you wanted to happen, and nothing was ever supposed to go wrong. When the path didn’t match up with what you wanted, you couldn’t live with yourself. But in the moments where you’re so despondent that you don’t know what to do, that’s what the school counselors are going to be there for you. They were there when you opened up to Mom. They were there to get you the help you needed. When you weren’t talking to the counselors, Chief and Major would check on you from time to time, making sure things were going okay.
It was a year of broken promises, disappointments and blunder after blunder. From totaling your first truck to getting in trouble at school, there were several times that you came dangerously close to losing everything.
Like your wise mom always said,
I can’t prepare you fully for the next four years you’re about to go through, but I leave you with this: No matter what might be happening, there will always be someone looking out for you. You were out of school for almost two weeks when Grandma died. The day you came back, people you had barely even met before were asking where you went and if you were all right. If you disappear, people will notice, and they will be upset. So before you make a bad decision, remember: You’re never alone.
Sincerely,
Graduated GarrisonL rizz8

For my last column, I wanted to write at the most ridiculous level of openness and transparency I possibly could. Some might call it “oversharing” and something “I’ll regret in a couple years. But in the name of journalism and feeling adventurous, I’ll do anything.
I chose to write about crushes. For some people, crushes mean less than nothing and it dies hours after it was born. They’ll see some person in their second period class, wearing a nice little outfit and their hair’s just perfect. Then the next day, they’re wearing some ugly shoes and it’s over.
But for me, every crush I’ve had, falls into two categories. I either run away and hide, avoiding them completely. Or I courageously open my mouth to speak to them and spit out some of the most nervous small talk, ever heard.
We’ll go through them all, but we have to move fast so there won’t be enough space for specifics.
Freshman year, was my first ever and last relationship in high school.
I know. I am an impressive specimen.
She was smart, put together and I felt so lucky that she liked me. But I ruined everything and went bonkers crazy. Gaping insecurities and a lack of self esteem made me overly attached very fast. She broke up with me three weeks later.
But I was crazy and that’s important to remember. She was 100% in the right
and I was a little baby-man unprepared for anything close to a relationship.
No unreliable narration here.
We’ll skip sophomore year, it was hard to have a crush on anyone while everyone was stuck inside. It was probably for the better. I was walking around my house with these uneven, janky fades I got from my dad in our bathroom.
experience of my life occurred and she never spoke to me again.
Senior year has been a whirlwind. It’s been like a really good Russell Westbrook game. Lots of shots and definitely some makes, but the amount of makes in proportion to the attempts makes you really ask yourself, was it worth it.
I have plenty of enthusiasm and spunk though.
Shoutout to all the people who I messaged a very unfunny joke to or some nonsense about music, (W rizz by the way). I absolutely had a crush on you guys.
Then there’s the handful who I then had a talking stage with, a phrase that makes me want to barf and a disgusting term to write. I also had a crush on you guys, but clearly something didn’t work out.
And that’s about it. I amassed a historic statline of one, three week relationship, four talking stages and a handful of rejections. But all of them fit into the category of the many times I crashed and burned with a lot of different people.
Junior year, I had a crush on a girl. Huge mistake. We talked here and there, developed a normal classmate-friend relationship. She said a lot of concerning things that I could’ve picked up on. But I found her funny. And hot.
She said yes to a date, then ghosted me. I went on with life.
Then she came back and said she wanted something only physically.
So after some pondering, the strangest
For all of them, I feel slightly embarrassed. But really, I have no regrets. I see it all as a glass half full. My friend Alex says I have no problem with the lack of people liking me but then I open my mouth. It’s hilarious to me but to me a positive scenario.
Like hey I fumbled the bag pretty badly. But I was in position to secure it and to me that’s not half bad. I’m still winning, I think.
