Welcome to the second edition of the T.M. Edit, a student-led newspaper showcasing the amazing work, internship experiences and myriad of on-campus adventures experienced by students from The Masters Institute of Creative Education & Holmes Institute Fashion. Our institutes provide a comprehensive and highly collaborative program aimed at crafting the next generation of creative professionals. Students from Fashion, Hair, Beauty and MakeUp come together both on our campus, and in this newspaper, to experience what life is really like in the creative industries.
The T.M. Edit is their chance to tell their story, in their own words. No creative stands alone. That’s our internal philosophy. Whether you’re a fashion designer, marketer, hair stylist, beauty therapist or makeup artist, in the industry you are constantly required to work with others in a collaborative and supportive environment. And that’s what we deliver. A truely unique experience that replicates the realities of working in the creative sector. Skye Dixon Editor | T.M. EDIT

T.M. X VICETA WANG “As a fashion baby, I was so inspired by Viceta’s Designs”
This March, two of our students Josiah James and Taelah Aitchison had the opportunity to assist on an incredible photoshoot with Viceta Wang; a Melbourne based fashion label designed for ‘sophisticated women who appreciate their uniqueness and femininity’. Amanda, a current Bachelor of Fashion Business student with Holmes Fashion is also the branding manager and fashion designer for Viceta Wang. In true #MastersTribe fashion, Amanda offered two assisting roles on their latest campaign shoot

to our first-year fashion design students. We caught up with Josiah to find out how it all went.
“It was so incredible to have the chance to assist on a professional photo shoot in the first few weeks of my course. The garments from Viceta Wang are simply stunning and consisted of luxurious fabrics and textiles; silks, linen, lace, tweeds, leather, fur, and beautiful trimmings and finishes. Plus gorgeous, light, almost earthy, colours; dusty pinks, light blues, off whites. It was a beautiful ensemble.”
We got the chance to ask Amanda herself what it was like to work with the T.M. students:
‘Both Josiah and Taelah were highly helpful and creative, coming up with good ideas and showing a wonderful understanding of styling. Viceta and I were unable to buy the flowers that I wanted to use for shooting and I asked Josiah to buy them for us. I sent to him some photos of the flowers that I wanted and he came with the most perfect flowers we could ever ask for - exactly what I was looking for. Big thanks to Josiah and Taelah for all of your support!’ - Amanda Yorioka (@ayorioka) Branding Manager & Fashion Designer at Viceta Wang
“As a fashion baby, I was so inspired by Viceta’s designs. Seeing designs and techniques that I had heard of and studied, but not actually seen in person or utilised myself, my mind started racing with new ideas and concepts. I loved having that opportunity to be inspired by another designer, especially because I actually got to meet her as well. On my way to the shoot, Amanda had asked if I could stop by a florist to pick up some flowers. She had the idea to style them into the photos to enhance the femininity of the garments. The slight detour made for a very interesting experience. It definitely puts into perspective the importance of quick communicating and thinking on your feet. Amanda was a great production director and ensured Taelah and I got to experience a variety of roles on set, including dressing the model, making sure the set was clean and that the clothes were steamed and ready for photography. It was an amazing experience. I learned what it was like to be a part of a formal photo shoot, what interacting with a professional model is and that you always have to be flexible with your ideas.“

and students from other years on hand to support us. Everyone was so helpful and encouraging! As part of M/FW, I was lucky enough to be nominated for the Emerging Designer Award. It was really exciting. I couldn’t really believe it and felt so surreal. It was definitely a confidence boost. Following my M/FW experience and studies at The Masters, I’ve had a variety of opportunities such as dressing Australian singer Montaigne (@actualmontaigne) for the ARIA’s. It was truly an incredible experience. Her stylist had seen my work on Instagram, got in contact with me and it all happened very quickly from there. I felt really honoured that Montaigne wanted to wear my outfit and she looked so incredible in it. It felt special to be a part of such an important message that she sent, as she had ‘Stop Adani’ printed on her cheeks. To anyone considering a path in fashion design, my advice would be if you’re passionate, do it. To anyone already studying, make sure to work hard, be strong in your values and visions, and don’t do it all alone. Follow more of Lucy’s story at Hey readers - Lucy here! In 2018 I had the opportunity to present my third-year designs to Melbourne Fashion Week and have them shown on the runway which was incredible! For my collection ‘Dead Air’, I focused on the women’s movement. I also took inspiration from birds, metal, and mushrooms. M/FW was quite the process though. We had to create our basic designs and concepts for our collection, then present them to a panel of assessors and I guess convince them to like our collections enough to want to showcase them. After we got selected then it was all hands on deck trying to get the three garments produced. We were all mentored by the amazing stylist Stuart Walford (@stuart_walford) which was awesome. He had a very gentle and calm approach. He also had a very beautiful vision and ideas but he didn’t force them on you. I felt he helped nurture you to grow and to create the best piece that you could. For me, the most exciting part of M/FW was seeing our designs on the runway. It was exhilarating after working so hard on them. We put our blood sweat and tears into our garments and to see them come together and look so amazing on the runway was beyond belief. It wasn’t all glamour though - the most nerve-racking part for me definitely had to be the model fittings. And then ensuring the garments were finished on time. If they didn’t fit the models there was no time to make any adjustments and if they weren’t finished they wouldn’t get chosen. It was as simple as that. Whilst backstage presenting to Stuart we were alone, back on campus we all had our teachers @vincci.chan.100

Pinky shared industry insights and advice from her extraordinary career to a crowd of students and industry professionals. We chatted to makeup student Lauren about her experience modelling for Pinky on the night:
“Everything has been done - let’s be honest, so the challenge is for you to make it your own by mixing it up”
From ideal brushes to use on lips to tricks to keep skin looking fresh and hydrated, I can definitely say that I have been using these tips regularly ever since! Her book, “Making It Up” is essential for any aspiring makeup artist or just anyone with a passion for makeup. It has inspired me to have more confidence in myself, to be more creative and play with colour, while at the same time create some stunning looks. Want to keep up with my makeup journey? In December last year, I had an amazing opportunity to be a model for makeup artist Nicole “Pinky” Thompson, for her new MakeUp book launch here at The Masters. Not only was this night a chance for myself and other students to gain extra knowledge on techniques and products recommended by Pinky, but it was also an opportunity to get unprecedented insight into the beauty industry and how to build a successful career in makeup. We were able to hear about different experiences such as what it’s like to work on set and how important it is to be aware of how to act on certain jobs, all from a huge industry pro. This night gave me an insight into the career I dream of having. Chatting with Pinky and hearing about her experiences was truly fascinating. Pinky is an amazing and inspirational woman, and I learnt so much from her in just the one day I spent with her. The looks she created on me and Alexis were beautiful and I have definitely taken her advice on board.
The Masters Awards Night WORDS CINDY WILSON | PHOTOGRAPHY SHOOT EVERYTHING
“When I think ‘festival’, I see colour and glitter’
12
In November 2018, whilst I may have (just) finished my Diploma of Beauty Therapy (SHB50115), I couldn’t say no to one last chance to play on campus. I had to be a part of the annual Masters Awards Night.
My main goal was for my total look to speak ‘Coachella’ rather than one particular aspect of it being the ‘feature’. I spent the day on campus with my model getting her hair and makeup ready, then finally dressing her in the outfit, completing the final look.
For those of you that don’t know, The Masters Awards Night is held every November, highlighting the achievements of Fashion, Hair, Beauty & MakeUp students, as well as hosting a variety of competitions, runways and industry guests.
That night, we opened the doors to the public and had our runway show. The runway itself was so much fun - my model absolutely rocked it and owned the ‘festival theme’. All the hard efforts paid off - I placed second! I’m so grateful for my team and the judges for seeing all the work that went into creating this.
At our 2018 Awards Night, I had the exciting experience of winning Beauty Student of the Year. This meant the world to me. I didn’t know what I wanted to study at 16 years old and initially only choose beauty to ‘fill the space’ for my VET subject requirement in VCAL. So to be recognised as Beauty Student of the Year was an amazing, overwhelming and inspiring experience. It made me excited about where my career can progress in the industry. As it was my final year at The Masters, I decided to get a little more creative and take a chance by entering one of the competitions, I chose the ‘styling to a theme’ competition. It was my job to design a Coachella inspired look, ready to be debuted on the runway. When I think ‘festival’, I see colour and glitter so that was the main focus for my look. I collaborated with a young Australian girl who just started a small business designing festival outfits. I actually helped to design the garment with her to make sure it matched my vision and would work with the overall look. I also had the fun opportunity to work with a hair student from T.M. in designing the hair look, which I also ended up getting quite hands-on with. It was so great to get to work with students who weren’t in my class but were a part of the #MastersTribe. Finally, I brought on the glitter. I did all the makeup and body art myself and honestly never thought I’d have so much fun creating it.
Also, shout out to Tayla Bourke (@taybourkehair) for winning the photography-based competition, The Face of The Masters - how amazing is this shot?! You can see her image featured as our back cover in this issue. It was well deserved. After all the madness, when I think about the Awards Night it’s bittersweet for me. It was exciting to participate in the Coachella competition but sad as it marked the end of my beauty studies. Studying at The Masters was such a great experience. It was welcoming, supportive, inspiring, hands-on and always exciting. I’m so grateful for the experience I had, the friends that I have made and the support from the staff, in particular from my educator Pam. She helped me find my passion in the industry and I truly don’t think I’d be where I am without her. Having graduated in 2018, I’m now working at The Spa Skin + Body in Gisborne as a professional beauty therapist. I hope to soon work on a cruise ship and offer beauty services around the world, or possibly own my own spa/salon one day. Who knows what the future holds! Want to follow more of my journey? NGV DESIGN WEEK X T.M. WORDS SASKIA WATERMAN | PHOTOGRAPHY CLAUDIA ALTAVILLA

So how are people creating these faux leather options? - Cork is one of the eco-friendliest materials at the moment. (It’s currently being used by Chanel and Louboutin!) - Another NEW leather alternative is Cool Stone ‘Leather’. It ages similarly to real leather so it gives off a similar vibe and look. - Tree Bark leather is another option - each piece is very unique looking! - Pinatex is made from pineapples and one of our faves! (Bonus - it actually feels like cowhide). - For all the mushroom lovers out there, Muskin is here! It can be waterproofed in a non-chemical way and is also biodegradable and eco-friendly. One thing I learnt today is that it’s super important to do your own research to get the most factual and unbiased info on sustainable leather alternatives and vegan leather options. More often than not a brand will be based on veganism or sustainability – not both! It’s your choice as the consumer to decide which is more important to you, so get researching! T.M. was excited to collaborate with the National Gallery of Victoria and Melbourne Design Week to present a “Learn & Create” workshop on the

For those of you that are new to the idea of sustainable fashion, let’s clear one misconception up: There’s actually quite a big difference between vegan and sustainable fashion. To put it simply, one is based on the planet and the war on waste and the other primarily focuses on animal welfare. Both are great causes but they don’t exactly go hand in hand. So let’s talk about the vegan side of things. First of all, shoutout to my home Melbourne for being the number 1 city in the world for veganism! I would say I’m surprised, but let’s be honest - there’s no shortage of cafes in Melbourne that are either totally vegan or have a wide array of vegan options. Other than the food, vegan leather is so on trend at the moment however it isn’t exactly ‘new’. Starting out with the OG vinyl, there has since been some great new tech that is improving the look and the feel of the materials, getting closer and closer to actual leather, minus the animals.

STEP 2
Comb it out Using a wide tooth comb, gently comb out the waves.
STEP 3
Add some texture Spray the hair with a texturing spray. Crunch the curls from the bottom up using your hands to retain a beachy wave.

STEP 4
Split and plait Split the hair into 3 sections to start the plait. Use a clear elastic to attach the scarf to the middle section. Begin to plait the hair, keeping the scarf running lengthways down the single section. Secure at the end with another elastic.

We don’t like to play favourites, but this has to be one of our most-loved short courses. For many of us, school holidays are an exciting ‘break’ that we look forward to, but two days in and we’re already bored looking for something to do. multidisciplinary skillset to die for. She founded Cinema Thom, a boutique creative agency in 2017, and launched her own sustainable linen scrunchie line “Remy” (@shopremy)
in 2018.
She’s an actress, producer, director, photographer & most recently an entrepreneur. So who better to mentor Chloe, a budding stylist and secondyear Bachelor of Fashion Business student at Holmes Fashion. We caught up with Chloe to find out what she’s learnt so far...
everything needs to be prepared as time is precious on set. I love the creative freedom to mix match all the different pieces together and then getting to see the final product through the creative eye of Arielle makes it all worth it. What’s been the highlight of your studies? My studies are going so well - I love the array of subjects I am doing, some are a little more hands-on and then there are somewhere I need to knuckle down and make sure the essay makes sense. I’ve loved having the freedom to research some of my favourite brands such as Spell, Zulu and Zephyr, Velvet Canyon and many more all in relevance to the focused subject eg. Product Development! I love being able to present on things I’m passionate about and then being able to listen to what the other students are experiencing. I also love going to industry opportunities with The Masters, this year I got to represent T.M. at VAMFF, at the Gorman Runway! Any advice for high school students that may like to follow in your footsteps? Everyone’s journey in the fashion industry will be different. Getting as much experience as possible through volunteering and interning will enable you to make new connections with others and help decide what areas you want to focus on and learn more about. Tell us a bit about your role at Cinema Thom and how it came about. So back in August last year, I was connected with Arielle Thomas (Founder of CinemaThom and Remy) through Skye (T.M.’s Communications and Course Director). Arielle was in need of an intern to help with all the ins and out of her new lifestyle brand Remy! Through this, I learnt the tricks of the trade about starting a small business and how to market to consumers in a digital world. Arielle is also a photographer so a major part of my role was to assist and style our Remy shoots. At the beginning of this year, I shifted into working for Cinema Thom (@cinema_thom) - a female-driven production company, specialising in content creation, social and digital. My role is Digital Co-ordinator and Stylist. On a daily basis, my tasks consist of social media managing for some of Australia’s most upcoming brands, as well as working on numerous upcoming projects for the company. A massive highlight was attending VAMFF with the By Johnny team. The styling side of things comes into play for passion projects such as editorials and Remy campaigns. What’s it like styling a shoot? Very busy... At Cinema Thom our recent passion project was an editorial shoot that I had the opportunity to creative direct and style. It was so exhilarating. My role involved sourcing and communicating with brands about desired pieces to include in the shoot. I was so excited because we got to work with some of my absolute favourite Australian fashion labels, such as Yoli and Otis, Brie Leon and White Story. When styling a shoot, the most important thing is organisation, there is no time to fluff around. From garments, shoes and accessories

Wing it
Tutorial

STEP 1
Line from the inner After prepping your eye with a neutral eyeshadow base, it’s time to get your liner out! Using a liquid eyeliner, lay it on its side and begin gently dragging across the inner third of the eye. Do this with your eyes open for best results!
STEP 2
Line to the arch Now that your inner third is lined, start from where you left off and drag the eyeliner across further, staying as close to the lash line as possible. It’s best to end this line where your brow arches.
22
STEP 3
Time to wing it! Don’t be afraid! Start from the outside of the eye, in line with where your brow ends. Following the angle of your waterline, drag your liner towards the eye to meet your previous line.
STEP 4
Tidy your line It doesn’t have to be perfect! But for added confidence use your finger or a cotton tip and a small amount of cleanser to sharpen and tidy your line.
STEP 5
Enhance Enhance your liner with a rich, black, mascara. Then you’re done! That wasn’t so bad, was it?
