THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE:
MELBOURNE FASHION WEEK—
Four students from our graduating Fashion Design program were selected to show at Melbourne Fashion Week, 2017. How amazing! We all know Melbourne Fashion Week (M/FW) as one of the largest and most popular fashion events in Australia, but we sometimes forget that it isn’t just about the designers that we already know and love, it’s about discovering the next generation of talent. MFW’s Student Runway is an opportunity for emerging talent to have their work showed on the runway, admired by attendees and simultaneously, inspiring future talent. The Designer Showcase presented an unforgettable runway show that featured a selection of unique, high fashion designs paired with iconic hair and makeup styling- a creative collaboration that we are so passionate about here at the Masters Institute. Like Marc Jacobs said, ‘when we do a fashion show, we try to send out a message; we couldn’t do that without hair and makeup.’ Congratulations to Alexia Brizuela Kozlowski, Sophie Rodriguez, Jade Dong and Lorraine Reeves on their incredible achievements. Special mention for Alexia’s achievement as a finalist for student designer of the year! We are so proud of all of your work. - Garment by Jade Dong

We are super excited to share that four students from our Advanced Diploma of Fashion Design & Merchandising were chosen to present their unique collections in the official Melbourne Fashion Week Designer Showcase of 2017! After months of sketching, fabric hunting and sleepless nights at the sewing machine, our students created their own individual works of art. Each design was a total headturner; unique, fashion forward and ambitious in their creation.

Want to see your work on the runway? Learn more about our Advanced Diploma of Fashion Design and Merchandising on 16 or visit our website - www.TheMasters.Institute. We have two intakes a year in March and July, so there’s no excuse to delay your dream!

THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE:
LOUIS VUITTON TIME CAPSULE — On March 5th, a select group of staff and students ventured out to the Louis Vuitton Time Capsule Exhibition at Chadstone Shopping Centre. With a mixture of fashion, hair, beauty and makeup students in attendance, our students relished the opportunity to visit an experience like no other. Visiting the Louis Vuitton Time Capsule was like taking a step back in time and walking through the eras of fashion history. With expert guides and unique stories, we walked out of the exhibition with a newfound knowledge of Louis Vuitton and in some ways, customer experience. One particular story that stood out to us was the Malle Fleurs (flower trunk). Louis Vuitton wanted to honour their most loyal customers in a way that wasn’t discounts. With this thought in mind, they created the flower box, a complimentary gift to their most valued customers as a way to say thank you. Instead of cheapening their brand with flash sales or discounts, the team at LV managed to thank their best customers in a unique and personal way. This insight into consumer engagement was not lost on our Fashion Business students. ‘The video graphics were totally surreal and magical.’
‘The Supreme skateboard was the highlight for me!’ -Katrina Frankin - Student

THE MASTERS MEET:
DARIO COTRONEO:
DCI EDUCATION & DARIO SALON
ZOE KARLIS:
EDITORIAL HAIR & MAKEUP ARTIST Meet Zoe Karlis, one of Melbourne’s own Hair and Make-Up Artists. Having worked as an editorial makeup artist for some time now, along with working on set for The Real Housewives of Melbourne, Zoe is taking the beauty world by a storm!!
Here at the Masters Institute, we had the pleasure of hosting one of his Mentor Programs. By the end of the day, a group of strangers were working like they’d been training in salons together for years. We were lucky enough to chat to Dario later on about his most valuable advice for hairdressers and his top tips to success:
We were lucky enough to have Zoe do a live demo, followed by a Q & A with our Makeup students. One student got the chance to model for the day as Zoe’s canvas and the rest watched and learned some unique skills and techniques.
section title
Meet Dario Cotroneo, ambassador of DCI Education and proud owner of the fabulous Dario Salon in Sydney. Dario started his education company in 1998 and has been in high demand around the world ever since!
We had the chance to ask Zoe about her top tips for aspiring makeup artists and what she thinks is the next trend:
1. WORK TODAY FOR THE FUTURE YOU.
TIP 1: WORK HARD (NOTICE A TREND?)
‘Everyday you go to work, think about in ten years time, how proud you are about what you did today.’
‘It’s not easy, it’s a lot of work, but once you get through that, its the best industry to be in’
I don’t know about you, but I think that is motivation for all creatives. So often creatives suffer from self doubt, but with an end goal in mind and an image of a dream worthy future, it’s what keeps us going.
Yes- this means early mornings packing your kit for a bridal client or long days of back to back models in a fashion shoot. It is so important to work hard in order to not only grow as an artist, but to also grow your clientelle.
2. COLLABORATE!
TIP 2: GET EXCITED BY NEW CHALLENGES
‘Work with people that are going to push you beyond what you think you can do.’
‘It’s so much fun- there’s something new and challenging all the time but it’s so exciting!’
We literally bow to this. It is all about collaboration, whether it is with fellow hairdressers in different stages of their careers or other creatives, collaboration allows you to learn, develop your skill set even further and most importantly, to inspire you. At The Masters Institute, collaboration is key. You don’t see a model strut down the runway without a team of hair stylists, makeup artists and abouit 700 other people prepping them, do you?
Zoe, we couldn’t have said it better! Never fear the new, rather, see it as an exciting opportunity! Sure, doing winged eyeliner on a hooded eye may not be the easiest thing ever, but if you embrace challenges and get more excited to learn new things, you are destined to grow as an artist.
3. SURROUND YOURSELF WITH THE BEST POSSIBLE PEOPLE. ‘Make your circle so small, filled with love and people who are passionate about pushing your career forward.’ This is integral. In life and art, surround yourself with the kinds of people who are going to encourage you to grow, push you to work harder and stand by your side throughout every moment. These are the people you need. The creative world is truly a rollercoaster ride (excuse the cheesy analogy) filled with adrenalin, fear, excitement and pride.
MAKEUP TREND OF 2018: BLUE EYESHADOW
That’s right- a glossy, blue eyeshadow could be making a comeback! It even made an appearance on the Oscars 2018 red carpet, worn by the wonderful Lupita Nyong’o.

SPOTLIGHT ON: LUCY BROOMHALL Currently in her third year of Fashion Design at The Masters Institute, Lucy's collection is titled ‘The Falling of the Leaves’ "The falling of the leaves is about someone coming into themselves, a person that is no longer following the crowds and letting go of there past self. Becoming a true individual, fearless in their choices and wanting a style that resembles that uniqueness within themselves." Lucy's collection focuses on traditional craftsmanship, drawing inspiration from textures in nature and recreating them in cloth. Techniques such as pintucking, pleating and ruffles are used to create these timeless designs.

COLLABORATIONS WINK MODELS _
The Masters Institute has teamed up with WINK Models as an opportunity to connect us with the faces of tomorrow. As an agency made up of 6 divisions (Male, Female, Sports, Classics, Youth and Promotional), WINK is one of the countries leading suppliers of talent. Founded by girl boss, Taryn Williams (known for TheRight.Fit), WINK celebratated it’s 10th year in business in 2017, representing over 650 talent Australia wide. 10 of our lucky students will have their designs modelled by talent from WINK at Melbourne Retail Festival. We can’t wait!
MELBOURNE RETAIL FESTIVAL _
The Masters Tribe are super excited to make an appearance at Melbourne Retail Festival - an Australian Textile & Fashion Trade Show like no other. Along with retailers such as Friends of Audrey, Tand Swimwear and DNC International, we will also be there too! We will be running a T.M.Touch Up Bar as well as producing the only runway show at the event, so keep your eyes peeled for our Masters Tribe at the two day festival.
