CALGARY- Alberta announced five additional deaths related to H1N1 influenza today, bringing the total number of fatalities in the province to 34 since the new flu strain first appeared in the spring. The victims include two middle-aged men from the Calgary area, a middleaged female from the northern part of the province as well as an adult male and an adult female from Edmonton. All of the victims had underlying health conditions. “It’s an unfortunate event when anyone dies from influenza or another infectious disease,” said Dr. Andre Corriveau, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health. “We’re going as fast as we can to immunize high risk groups.” Premier Ed Stelmach expressed his condolences to families of the victims Thursday. “It is tragic to the families that lose loved ones to influenza,” he said. “Obviously, Canadians are concerned.”

CALGARY - With less than 70 weeks to go before access from Barlow Trail to the airport is eliminated, more than 400 people seeking a tunnel connection packed a hotel conference room Monday in a raucous rally for funding. The proposal needs the backing of the Calgary Airport Authority, which will replace that portion of Barlow Trail with a north-south runway, set to open in 2014.
Northeast resident Roone Learmont vowed to show his support by having friends, neighbours and family contact government and airport officials. "I'm really fired up tonight," said Learmont, who has lived in Temple for 37 years. "I would like to know which part of the city the people of the airport authority live in? They should know that a lot of the computers are going to be jammed up," he said in reference to the campaign. Another northeast resident, Usman Mahmood, said it's unacceptable that people would be expected to find a roundabout detour to get to the airport. "It would be total chaos, not just for the northeast, but the whole city," said Mahmood, noting Deerfoot Trail is congested during rush hours. The estimated cost of building a continuous tunnel under the new airport runway has ranged from $50 million to $500 million, although Ald. Jim Stevenson said Monday the first phase could come in at around $125 million. The east-west tunnel would align with Airport Trail, providing access to the terminal and Deerfoot Trail. Mayor Dave Bronconnier, who was at the meeting, told the Herald the city is working with the airport authority to buy some time around the airport tunnel. The city is looking at "a signalized intersection, midway up Barlow Trail, and what that does is keep Barlow Trail active and operational for a further eight months to a year, giving us a little bit more time to find a solution for a desired outcome," Bronconnier said, adding he's meeting with the airport authority next week. The mayor said the city can't --and shouldn't--fund the project on its own. "We'll be looking to support from the federal and provincial governments because the city can't do it alone," he said. "This is not just a local issue." The meeting was hosted by the Airport Trail Access Committee, which is urging Calgarians to contact provincial and federal officials to lobby for funding. The Herald was unable to reach a Calgary Airport Authority official for comment. City council has committed $50 million to the project.
H1N1 High Risk Targeted Immunization Next Phases of Immunization On November 12 and 13, Alberta Health Services will begin offering H1N1 vaccine to more groups of individuals at high risk of developing severe illness related to influenza. As this process continues, no high risk groups will be removed from eligibility - only new groups added. On November 12 and ongoing, new groups being added include: • People with chronic conditions aged 55 to 64 as of Nov. 1; • People with chronic conditions aged 10 to 17 as of Nov. 1. (Combined with the group added Nov. 6, this group ranges from 5 to 17.) On November 13 and ongoing, immunization groups will expand to include: • People with chronic conditions aged 45 to 54 as of Nov.1. (Combined with the group added Nov. 12, this group will range from 45 to 64.) Included in the next phases of immunization: • at risk groups and chronic conditions When more vaccine becomes available from the manufacturer, the targeted immunization program will be expanded to include other high risk groups. All previously entitled high risk groups remain eligible: • previous high risk groups At this time, the vaccine will not be available to other Albertans. When more vaccine becomes available from the manufacturer, the targeted
immunization program will be expanded to include other high risk groups. Further announcements will be made as more information becomes available on the national vaccine supply. Alberta Health Services and Alberta Health and Wellness are working to balance the aim of providing the vaccine to as many high risk groups as possible given the limited supply of vaccine on hand. All Albertans who want to be immunized will have that opportunity when increased supply of the vaccine arrives from the manufacturer. To ensure the vaccine can be provided to high risk groups at this time, no exceptions can be allowed. Healthy children between 3 and 9 years of age should
only receive a single half-dose of the H1N1 vaccine, and do not need to return for a second vaccine for now.

Fern is survived by his six children; Mike Tremblay of Vancouver, Jo-Anne (Gary) Dalton of Sylvan Lake, Dan (Connie) Tremblay of Munson, Sylvie Tremblay (Mark Smitten) of Stettler, Buddy Tremblay (Crystal Anderson) of Drumheller and Raymond Tremblay also of Drumheller. Grandchildren Vanissa (Dan) Trout, Logan Tremblay and their mother Christine Lavine, Shannon (Jeff) Currie, Jason Dalton, Christopher (Katrina) Regehr, Danielle Tremblay, Colin Tremblay, Jeff Smitten (Janene Fox), Cody Smitten, Odessa Nicholson and Kira Tremblay. Wednesday, 11 November 2009 00:00 © DrumhellerMail.com 1930 – 2009 Mr. John Omelchenko beloved husband of Min Omelchenko of Red Deer, Alberta, formerly of Bashaw and Drumheller, passed away after a lengthy illness, surrounded by his loving family on Monday, November 2, 2009 at the Red Deer Regional Hospital at the age of 79 years. John was born on August 16, 1930 at Wayne, Alberta to Andrew and Katherine Omelchenko. He was a dedicated, hard worker his entire life, at the age of 13 his father passed away and John helped support his family. He became the manager of Toshacks Shoe department for many years then he continued his education in Hospital Administration and was the Assistant Administrator of the Drumheller Hospital for seven years. From there he moved to continue his career as Hospital Administrator at the Bashaw General Hospital for 21 years until retirement. John also served and was the Commanding Officer of the Calgary Highlanders in the rank of Captain; under his command his unit won many awards. John met and married his soul mate of 51 years Min Bauer on August 2, 1958. Together they raised two children, daughter, Cathy and son, Greg. “Papa” was an avid gardener and was noted for his beautiful yard and gardens. His favorite pastime was to build his family “special projects” in his workshop all made with love. He was extremely proud of all of his grandchildren and great grandchildren and loved to watch his grandson Trent play for the New York Islanders in the NHL. He also took great pride in the fact that Tyler and Todd followed in his love of carpentry. John will be sadly missed but lovingly remembered by his wife, Min of Red Deer, Alberta, his daughter, Cathy (Stanley) also of Red Deer, Alberta, his son, Greg of Calgary, Alberta, grandsons, Trent (Teri) Hunter of New York, United States, Tyler (Angela) Hunter of Springbrook, Alberta, and Todd Hunter of Red Deer, two great–grandchildren, Madison Hunter of New York, United States, and Brayden Hunter of Springbrook, Alberta. John also leaves to mourn his loss his sister, Anne Kuzma of Calgary, Alberta, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. John was predeceased by his parents, Andrew and Katherine, his brother, William, and
two sisters, Mary and Elizabeth. A celebration of John’s life was held at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 40 Holmes Street, Red Deer, Alberta on Friday November 6, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Jane Mitchell officiating. Interment was held at Alto Reste Cemetery, Red Deer, Alberta. CBC News Several events are being held in Calgary for Remembrance Day 2009. Last year, a record-breaking crowd at the Military Museums honoured soldiers past and present. Here are some of the ceremonies in Calgary on Nov. 11: • The Military Museums, 4520 Crowchild Tr. S.W. Ceremony starts at 10:50 a.m. Attendants should dress warmly and arrive before 10 a.m. as parking is limited. Free parking is available at the museum, as well as Centennial Arena, Masters' Academy, and the Calgary Farmers Market. Containers will be provided for food donations to the Veterans Food Bank and
for monetary donations to the Military Families Fund. • Central Memorial Park Cenotaph, 1221 Second St. S.W. The ceremony, which starts at 11 a.m., will be led by the Calgary Highlanders. • Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, 1415 14th Ave. N.W. Ceremony starts at 10:30 a.m. • The Naval Museum of Alberta, HMCS Tecumseh, 1820 24th St. S.W. Ceremony with naval cadets starts at 10:30 a.m. • Gulf Canada Square, 401 Ninth Ave. S.W. Members of the Calgary 41st Brigade Group, the Calgary Highlanders and the Navy League Cadet Corps along with Canadian Pacific staff will participate in the ceremony which starts at 10:40 a.m. • Battalion Ridge, overlooking Westhills Towne Centre. Police investigate school bus crash Updated: Thu Nov. 12 2009 14:19:42 CTV.ca News Staff A number of elementary school children were taken to hospital after a school bus crash in the northwest Thursday morning. A school bus crashed around 8:15 a.m. Thursday morning sending a number of children who were on the bus to hospital. The bus collided with a mini van at 78 Ave. and 9 St. N.W. and then crashed into a tree in the front yard of a house. The children were already being evacuated from the bus through the rear exit door when emergency crews arrived. All 36 students on the bus were taken to Alberta Children's Hospital, 17 were taken by EMS and the rest were transported on another bus. The children were treated for cuts and bruises and both drivers are in hospital in serious but stable condition. Neighbours heard the crash and rushed out to help the kids. "We heard the noise, we came outside and the bus was up there," said Shawn Lester, "we ran over to help the kids, couldn't get the door open so we went and grabbed a pry bar, pried it open, helped them out onto the lawn and from there we just helped them with blankets to keep them warm." Calgary police say that they are looking into the cause of the accident but they do not believe alcohol was a factor. "We're working towards identifying what really did take place," said CPS Duty Inspector, Curtis Olson, "was it a matter of a vehicle malfunction or was it driver error, we can't say that for sure right now." Fire fighters used chainsaws to remove the bus from a large spruce tree and both the bus and the minivan were transported to CPS facilities for inspection. The Calgary Police Traffic Unit is investigating the incident.
