VAN GERWEN ENDS FIVE YEAR EUROPEAN TOUR NINE DART DROGHT
M
ichael van Gerwen converted the first ninedart leg on the European Tour in five years this evening during a 6-2 win over Ryan Joyce. Van Gerwen, who himself hasn’t hit a nine-darter for four months before today, sent the Hamburg crowd into overdrive with a sensational leg against Ryan Joyce in the second round of this weekend’s European Darts Matchplay. Ross Smith hit a nine-darter at the 2013 Gibraltar Darts Trophy five years ago and never imagined that if we would go half a decade down the road he would still be the last man to complete perfection. When talking to The Maximum back in February in an exclusive interview, Smith said: “It’s a complete shock there has not been a nine-darter since and people keep saying I put a curse on it, I will try and be the first to do it now I’m back on tour.” A tremendous occasion for German darts following Max Hopp’s title win a few months ago and a much deserved moment for the thousands that pack inside and sell out arenas across the country. The Dutchman went the 180, 177, 144 route as he completed perfection and ended the five year nine-dart drought on the European Tour.
