Afghanistan Mayhew has been providing assistance to Afghanistan since 2001: advising the Kabul authorities on how to address the issue of freeroaming dogs in Kabul in a humane way and providing veterinary training to Kabul University Vet Faculty and animal welfare organisations on the ground. In 2015 Mayhew International carried out the first ever dog population survey in Kabul and in 2016 Mayhew registered as an NGO in Afghanistan to enable us to deliver our long-term strategy of eradicating rabies in Kabul through the implementation of a mass canine rabies vaccination programme and a comprehensive Trap Vaccinate Neuter and Release (TVNR) programme to control, contain and reduce the free-roaming dog population there.

Eradicating rabies in Kabul In January 2017, Mayhew Afghanistan signed a landmark agreement with Kabul Municipality to halt the inhumane practice of dog culling by strychnine poisoning in order to start delivery of our strategy. Mayhew Afghanistan employs local veterinary and administrative personnel providing them with ongoing training and development, thus empowering the next generation of Afghans to have a comprehensive understanding of the companion animal welfare issues affecting their city and how to develop projects and programmes to address them humanely.

Having formerly had a brutal and distressing job poisoning the dogs and frequently in receipt of abuse from local residents, the Kabul Municipality Mayhew Afghanistan dog catching team now have more pride in their work and are more often

Elderly cat, Pearl, who belongs to an expat from the US, had severe stomatitis and was in great pain. She needed several of her teeth removed, leaving her with just her canines. Afghanistan Country Director, Dr. Abdul Jalil Mohammadazi DVM carried out the dental work at the Kabul University Vet Clinic. He was assisted by Dr. Massoud Niazi and vet students were present to observe and learn.

Previously Kabul Municipality employed a large number of staff to catch and kill the free-roaming dogs. With the end of the culling programme many of the dog-catchers were concerned about their jobs, but Mayhew Afghanistan planned for opportunities for re-training and has recruited a pool of Kabul Municipality dog catchers. They have received training both in India and in Kabul in humane handling and restraint and safe and secure net catching of dogs and are now working as a team with Mayhew Afghanistan personnel to catch and vaccinate the dogs of Kabul against rabies. welcomed into local communities where they are able to explain what they are doing and how it is helping Kabul residents – a real behaviour change in terms of the humane treatment of freeroaming dogs and for animal welfare in the region. Working with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture & Farming, Ministry of Public Health and Kabul Municipality, Mayhew Afghanistan started step one of the mass canine rabies vaccination programme initiative in August 2017 and have a three year strategy for the city. Mayhew Afghanistan is proud to be working towards the aim of the WHO and OIE to eradicate rabies around the world by 2030 (#Zeroby30). In parallel, Mayhew Afghanistan plans to deliver a comprehensive dog population control programme – a Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate, Release initiative with the support of the authorities.

Georgia Mayhew International has been working in Georgia since 2013. We provide veterinary and shelter management training for Tbilisi’s Municipal Shelter and advice to the city’s Animal Monitoring Agency on how to develop and deliver a humane dog population management programme and encourage responsible pet ownership. Mayhew International also supports and funds a TVNR initiative run by local charity Dog Organisation Georgia (DOG), assists other local groups and more recently has reached out to other regional Municipalities in the country, providing opportunities for veterinary training in small animal medicine and surgery from our base in Tbilisi.

Working to raise the standards of small animal veterinary care and welfare, we deliver workshops and seminars in animal welfare, disease control and small animal reproductive surgery both at the Free Agrarian University in Tbilisi and Tbilisi Municipal Shelter for veterinary professionals from Georgia and surrounding countries. The focus now is making Tbilisi, Georgia a hub for veterinary and welfare training in that region where the background of veterinary training and working environment is similar.

Tbilisi expansion programme We now have an agreement with a new Vet Clinic run by Dato Omarashvili (one of the vets who works at Tbilisi Municipal Shelter) to expand their facilities with a second clinic, enabling them to increase the number of dogs neutered as part of our sponsored programme. We also sponsor the salary of vet Ana Metskhvarishvili at the new Vet Clinic who has trained with Mayhew International and helped us when we visit Georgia. She will be neutering the dogs from DOG on the TVNR programme.

Improving veterinary standards and compassion in veterinary care.

Mayhew has successfully trained a growing pool of Georgian vets from Tbilisi in safe and secure neutering techniques both at our facilities in London and in the field in Georgia. These vets are now passing on their training to other Georgian vets. Our first Georgian vet trainees are now working at the University Vet Clinic in Tbilisi sharing their knowledge with others. At Tbilisi Municipal Shelter the standards of surgery and care from the vet team there has improved dramatically as Mayhew International has nurtured their development and assisted with equipment and resources for the onsite clinic and care of the animals. Safe and secure neutering for free-roaming dogs and cats is now also available from some commercial vet clinics in Tbilisi whose vets have been in receipt of Mayhew veterinary training, thus enabling local animal welfare groups to have more accessibility to such preventative services.

Russia Mayhew International has been involved with companion animal welfare in Moscow since 2001. We work with locally based charities to encourage humane methods of dealing with the street, stray and shelter dogs and cats in Moscow and the surrounding regions. We provide veterinary training in safe and secure neutering techniques for Russian vets, both at Mayhew’s Vet Clinic facilities in London and in the field. Presently we support three local charities in the capital, Moscow. The Russian vets helping these organisations have all received training from Mayhew International and are now sharing their skills with others.

India Mayhew International has been working in Ranchi, Jharkhand state, in northern India since 2006.

Vet training in Moscow In Moscow our vet training has enabled those vets who participate not only to confidently carry out safe and secure neutering surgery, but also start to show and train other Russian vets.

Working with HOPE & Animal Trust our funding delivers a Trap, Neuter, Release and rabies vaccination programme for Ranchi. In addition, Mayhew International funds an Education Officer for HOPE, who visits local communities and schools to educate children and adults on compassion towards animals, rabies prevention and the benefits of neutering, thus changing their perceptions and improving the lives of both the animals and the humans in their towns and villages. This sponsored education has reached over 600,000 people spreading the word for animal welfare and compassion.

Russian vets, Dr Natalya Potapochkina, Dr Elena Bokareva and Dr Valentina Grigorova have all had intensive training both at Mayhew’s London Clinic facilities and in the field in Moscow. All three vets currently provide free and/or low-cost neutering projects through their own organisations or via the clinics they work at in Moscow and Petrazavodsk. More recently, Mayhew International has carried out veterinary training outside of Moscow where veterinary provision and resources are limited.

To date more than 65,000 dogs have been neutered and vaccinated against rabies in Ranchi. A dog population survey carried out by Mission Rabies showed that the target number of neutered street dogs – 70% of the population - had been reached in parts of the city and that it was noticeable that the majority of community and street dogs were identifiable as having been neutered and vaccinated. Working in conjunction with Mission Rabies, Mayhew International is proud to have been part of the mass rabies vaccination programme in Ranchi which started in 2013, with Ranchi City recently celebrating a year without any reported fatalities from caninemediated rabies.

Russian vet training

Freelance vet Natasha Potapochkina says: “The first Mayhew training I had in 2008 was the first time I had seen gas anaesthesia being used for surgery. As well as cats and dogs, I learnt how to sterilise rabbits and ferrets. I learnt about various drugs and medications and how to use them correctly. My second training was in 2012 and as well as neutering operations I was able to observe other surgeries including eye enucleations. I gained a lot for my own professional development and I am so grateful to Mayhew. To be able to share their expertise with other vets and help them work to high standards is also beneficial for the animals we treat.”

International Vet Training Programme

Help us to save more lives

Mayhew International’s International Veterinary Training Programme is designed for veterinary personnel from overseas who are interested in promoting and improving companion animal welfare in their country. Training vets interested in this area has a special significance for international development, benefiting and empowering communities and bringing more stakeholders together to address those issues affecting both animals and people. The training takes place at our Community Vet Clinic in London.

Mayhew International strives to improve animal health and welfare in the countries where we work overseas. You could help us do so much more by making a one-off or monthly donation.

The programme concentrates on demonstrating and teaching safe and secure neutering techniques, anaesthesia, pain management, high standards of

Dr. Ioannis Fouskis is a private vet from Crete and also volunteers and helps at the animal welfare organisation, Crete Animal Welfare Society. He spent two weeks on our International Vet Training programme in London where he gained an insight into pre- and post-operative care, protocols, and techniques for improved animal handling, efficient sterilisation and pain management. Implementing these best practice methods significantly reduces the risk of complications during and postoperation, improves animal welfare and minimises the stress to the animals before, during and after spay, neutering and general surgery. “I have learnt skills and techniques that I can take away with me and show other vets working at the charities I volunteer for,” says Dr. Ioannis. In Greece I don’t have any veterinary nurses to help me during surgery, so I really appreciated the veterinary nurses that work at Mayhew. I’m now considering training a nurse when I return home.”

pre and post-operative care, disease control and shelter medicine. The course encourages good animal welfare practices for the veterinary professional and participants have the opportunity to learn about the structure and management of an urban animal shelter and Mayhew’s range of community outreach and education programmes. Our International Veterinary Training Programme enables vet professionals to return to their countries not only with enhanced veterinary skills, but also with a foundation in compassionate animal welfare that in time can be shared with others and bring about real human behaviour change for those working to relieve the suffering of animals all over the world.
