TRAXYS GROUP Global alternative asset manager The Carlyle Group, together with affiliates of Louis M. Bacon, the founder, Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and principal investment manager of Moore Capital Management, LP, recently completed the previously announced acquisition of a majority interest in the Traxys Group, a physical metals and minerals commodity merchant, logistics and trading firm. As part of the transaction, Traxys management has increased its investment stake in the company. Carlyle, Louis Bacon and Traxys management acquired their stake from Pegasus Capital Advisors, Kelso & Company and Resource Capital Funds. Equity capital for Carlyle's investment came from Carlyle's U.S. Equity Opportunity Fund LP. Alan Docter, Chairman of Traxys, and Mark Kristoff, CEO of Traxys, said, “We are excited to have the support of Carlyle and Louis Bacon as we embark on this next chapter of growth and development as a firm.“ David Stonehill, Carlyle Managing Director, said, “Traxys's talented team, proven business model and attractive market environment provide fertile ground for continued product development and global expansion.” Traxys is a provider of marketing, distribution and supply chain management services to the metals and natural resources sectors. CHEMICAL ARTICLE NEW RESEARCH IN AREAS RANGING FROM QUANTUM CHEMISTRY TO TESTS OF THE MOST BASIC THEORIES IN PARTICLE

T

he tiny titans in question are bits of strontium monofluoride, dropped to 2.5 thousandths of a degree above absolute zero through a laser cooling and isolating process called magneto-optical trapping (MOT). They are the coldest molecules ever achieved through direct cooling, and they represent a physics milestone likely to prompt new research in areas ranging from quantum chemistry to tests of the most basic theories in particle physics. "We can start studying chemical reactions that are happening at very near to absolute zero," said Dave DeMille, a Yale physics professor and principal investigator. "We have a chance to learn about fundamental chemical mechanisms." The research is published this week in the journal Nature. Magneto-optical trapping has become ubiquitous among atomic physicists in the past generation -- but only at the single-atom level. The technology uses lasers to simultaneously cool particles and hold them in place. "Imagine having a shallow bowl with a little molasses in it," DeMille explained. "If you roll some balls into the bowl, they will slow down and accumulate at the bottom. For our experiment, the molecules are like the balls and the bowl with molasses is created via laser beams and magnetic fields." Until now, the complicated vibrations and rotations of molecules proved too difficult for such trapping. The Yale team's unique approach drew inspiration from a relatively obscure, 1990s research paper that described MOT-type results in a situation where

14

the usual cooling and trapping conditions were not met. DeMille and his colleagues built their own apparatus in a basement lab. It is an elaborate, multi-level tangle of wires, computers, electrical components, tabletop mirrors, and a cryogenic refrigeration unit. The process uses a dozen lasers, each with a wavelength controlled to the ninth decimal point. "If you wanted to put a picture of something high-tech in the dictionary, this is what it might look like," DeMille said. "It's deeply orderly, but with a bit of chaos." It works this way: Pulses of strontium monofluoride (SrF) shoot out from a cryogenic chamber to form a beam of molecules, which is slowed by pushing on it with a laser. "It's like trying to slow down a bowling ball with ping pong balls," DeMille explained. "You have to do it fast and do it a lot of times." The slowed molecules enter a specially-shaped magnetic field, where opposing laser beams pass through the center of the field, along three perpendicular axes. This is where the molecules become trapped. "Quantum mechanics allows us to both cool things down and apply force that leaves the molecules levitating in an almost perfect vacuum," DeMille said. The Yale team chose SrF for its structural simplicity -- it has effectively just one electron that orbits around the entire molecule. "We thought it would be best to start applying this technique with a simple diatomic molecule," DeMille said. The discovery opens the door for further experimentation into everything

from precision measurement and quantum simulation to ultracold chemistry and tests of the standard model of particle physics. The lead author of the paper is John Barry, a former Yale graduate student now at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. Other authors of the paper are Yale postdoctoral fellow Danny McCarron and graduate students Eric Norrgard and Matt Steinecker. New magnetic trap and a new technique to achieve "evaporative cooling" of hydroxyl molecules Achieving a goal considered nearly impossible, JILA physicists have chilled a gas of molecules to very low temperatures by adapting the familiar process by which a hot cup of coffee cools. Evaporative cooling has long been used to cool atoms, at JILA and elsewhere, to extraordinarily low temperatures. The process was used at JILA in 1995 to create a then-new state of matter, the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of rubidium atoms. The latest demonstration, reported in the Dec. 20, 2012, issue of Nature, marks the first time evaporative cooling has been achieved with molecules -two different atoms bonded together. JILA researchers cooled about 1 million hydroxyl radicals, each composed of one oxygen atom and one hydrogen atom (OH), from about 50 milliKelvin (mK) to 5 mK, fivethousandths of a degree above absolute zero. The 70-millisecond process also made the cloud 1,000 times denser and cooler. With just a tad more cooling to below 1 mK, the new method may enable advances in

CHEMICAL ARTICLE ultracold chemistry, quantum simulators to mimic poorly understood physical systems, and perhaps even a BEC made of highly reactive molecules. The same JILA group previously used magnetic fields and lasers to chill molecules made of potassium and rubidium atoms to temperatures below 1 microKelvin. But the new work demonstrates a more widely usable method for cooling molecules that is potentially applicable to a wide range of chemically interesting species. "OH is a hugely important species for atmospheric and combustion dynamics," says JILA/NIST Fellow Jun Ye, the group leader. "It is one of the most prominently studied molecules in physical chemistry. Now with OH molecules entering the ultracold regime, in addition to potassiumrubidium molecules, a new era in physical chemistry will be upon us in the near future." JILA is a joint institute of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the University of Colorado (CU) Boulder. The results are the first to be published from the first experiments conducted in JILA's new XWing, which opened earlier this year. JILA theorist John Bohn collaborated with Ye's group. In evaporative cooling, particles with greater-than-average energy depart, leaving a cooler and denser system behind. Unlike coffee, however, the trapped hydroxyl molecules have to be tightly controlled and manipulated for the process to work. If too many particles react rather than just bounce off each other, they overheat the system. Until now, this was widely seen as a barrier to evaporative cooling of molecules. Molecules are more complicated than atoms in their energy structures and physical motions, making them far more difficult to CHEMICAL BUSINESS WEEKLY

control. To achieve their landmark result, Ye's group developed a new type of trap that uses structured magnetic fields to contain the hydroxyl molecules, coupled with finely tuned electromagnetic pulses that tweak the molecules' energy states to make them either more or less susceptible to the trap. The system allows scientists not only to control the release of the hotter, more energetic molecules from the collection, but also to choose which locations within the trap are affected, and which molecular energies to cull. The result is an extremely fine level of control over the cooling system, gradually ejecting molecules that are physically deeper and relatively cooler than before. JILA scientists say it appears feasible to cool OH molecules to even colder temperatures, perhaps to a point where all the molecules behave alike, forming the equivalent of a giant "super molecule." This would enable scientists to finally learn some of the elusive basics of how molecules interact and develop novel ways to control chemical reactions, potentially benefitting atmospheric and combustion science, among other fields. The research was funded by the National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, Air Force Office of Scientific Research and NIST. DIRECT LASER COOLING OF MOLECULES : Cooling molecules with lasers is harder than cooling individual atoms with lasers. The very process of laser cooling, in which atoms are buffeted by thousands of photons, was thought by many to be impossible for molecules since photons, instead of slowing and cooling the molecules, could actually excite internal motions such as rotations and vibrations. Consequently, to get cold molecules

one method is to first cool atoms and then combine them into molecules. Now Yale physicist David DeMille and his team have developed a way to cool molecules directly with laser light using three lasers instead of the two typically needed for atoms. By choosing the molecular species carefully --they experiment with SrF molecules-- and choosing the photon energies to avoid unwanted excitation of rotational motion, the cooling process can proceed. In this way, molecular temperatures of 300 micro-K have been achieved, the lowest ever for direct cooling of molecules. This temperature pertains so far to motion along one selected dimension only, much as for the initial demonstrations of laser cooling for atoms. While these temperatures are less than a thousandth of a degree above absolute zero, they are for now orders of magnitude hotter than the cold molecules that can be made by first chilling individual atoms and then combining them. With the latter approach, however, the choice of molecules is presently limited to only those that can be made with alkali atoms. The SrF molecules used in the Yale experiment, by contrast, possess an unpaired electron. This makes them potentially useful as quantum bits or in various studies of fundamental physics. In addition, the results from DeMille's group indicate that laser cooling to yet lower temperatures is likely possible for SrF and other, similar molecules. “The technique of laser cooling," says DeMille, "which has led to a revolution in atomic physics, has now been shown to also apply to (at least some) molecules. This significantly expands the range of molecules for which ultracold temperatures can be reached, which in turn opens a route to many new scientific applications." 15

EDITORIAL 16TH MAY ORDER HAMPERING $22BN CHEMICAL EXPORT

T

he Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals (DCPC) is all set to submit a report to the Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizer, Anant Kumar, for his perusal with regard to the Office Memorandum(OM). The Office Memorandum issued by the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) on 16th May ,2014 make the 'public consultations process' mandatory for all industrial establishments. The DCPC is going to call the meeting of all the stakeholders including the MoEF, Commerce Ministry and industry associations like the Dyestuffs Manufacturers Association of India (DMAI), Indian Chemical Council (ICC) and CHEMEXCIL (Basic Chemicals, Pharmaceuticals and Cosmetics Export Promotion Council under Commerce ministry) to resolve the matter. According to an official communique, the OM reads that public consultation process for various projects is mandatory even for those units situated in Industrial Estates established much before the EIA notifications of 2006. However, DCPC has proposed that the matter needs to be taken up with the MoEF for resolution since it adversely affects the chemical industry. Exemption from Public Consultation is allowed for the projects/activities located within the Industrial estates/ parks. Meanwhile, CHEMEXCIL, in its letter to the DCPC, wrote that the draconian order will affect the exports worth $22 billion in the future and Indian chemical industry would not be able to withstand the competition of Chinese manufacturers. The chemical industry is one of the oldest industries in India. It not only plays a crucial role in meeting the daily needs of the common man, but also contributes significantly towards industrial and economic growth of the nation. The global chemical` industry, estimated at US$ 2.4 trillion, is one of the fastest growing sectors of the manufacturing industry. Despite the challenges of escalating crude oil prices and demanding international environmental protection standards now adopted globally, the chemicals industry has still grown at a rate higher than the overallmanufacturing segment. As per industry reports the pharmaceutical segment contributes approximately 26% of the total industry output and approx. 35-40% is dominated by the petrochemical segment. Commodity chemicals is the largest segment in the chemicals market with an approx. size of $ 750 billion while the specialty and fine chemicals segment accounts for $ 500 billion. Some of the major markets for chemicals are 16

North America, Western Europe, Japan and emerging economies in Asia and Latin America. The US consumes approximately one-fifth of the global chemical consumption whereas Europe is the largest consumer with approx. half the consumption. The US is the largest consumer of commodity chemicals whereas Asia Pacific is the largest consumer of agrochemicals and fertilizers. The Indian chemical industry is one of the oldest industries in India, which contributes significantly towards industrial and economic growth of the nation. It is highly science based and provides valuable chemicals for various end products such as textiles, paper, paints and varnishes, leather etc., which are required in almost all walks of life. The Indian Chemical Industry forms the backbone of the industrial and agricultural development of India and provides building blocks for downstream industries. Chemical Industry is an important constituent of the Indian economy. Its size is estimated at around US$ 35 billion approx., which is equivalent to about 3% of India's GDP. The total investment in Indian chemical sector is approx. US$ 70 billion and total employment generated is about 1 million. The Indian chemical sector accounts for over14% of total exports and 8-9% of total imports of the country. In terms of volume, it is 12th largest in the world and 3rd largest in Asia. Currently, per capita consumption of products of chemical industry in India is about 1/10th of the world average. Over the last decade, the Indian chemical industry has evolved from being a basic chemical producer to becoming an innovative industry. With investments in R&D, the industry is registering significant growth in the knowledge sector comprising of specialty chemicals, fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Also, the DMAI has requested the DCPC to look in to the matter so as to ensure that the process of public consultations is not made applicable to the existing approved industrial estates; otherwise the growth of chemical sector will be hindered. Further, the ICC in its representation to the DCPC has mentioned that recent instructions of MoEF are derogatory for the growth of chemical sector as it mandates public hearing even in areas which are designated for industrial development by the state government through its industrial corporations like MIDC and GIDC etc. They have requested to reconsider the OM of MoEF at least in respect of government industrial parks and estates which were established before the EIA notification, 2006.

COMMERCIAL PRODUCTION OF FUELS AND CHEMICALS FROM CLEAN NATURAL GAS

S

iluria Technologies, a pioneer in the commercial production of fuels and chemicals made from clean and abundant natural gas, announced today the initial close of its Series D financing round. The round was led bySaudi Aramco Energy Ventures (SAEV), the venture investment subsidiary of Saudi Aramco, the world's leading fully integrated energy and chemical enterprise, and included additional investments by all of the major existing investors in Siluria. The total raise for this initial close of the Series D financing was $30 million. "We are very pleased to welcome SAEV as a major investor in Siluria, and look forward to exploring opportunities to work together on the strategic front," said Siluria CEO Ed Dineen. "We are excited to bring additional industry capabilities to our company and our board as we continue to progress towards commercializing our process," said Siluria Board of Directors Chairman Karl Kurz. Siluria has developed a catalytic process for transforming natural gas -the most abundant and widely available hydrocarbons on earth -- into transportation fuels and commodity chemicals in an efficient, costeffective, scalable manner using processes that can be seamlessly integrated into existing industry infrastructure. Siluria has created a growing portfolio of process configurations with applications in upstream, midstream gas processing, downstream chemicals production and refining operations. Recently, Siluria announced a

partnership with The Linde Group, a world leading gases and engineering company, to offer an integrated package combining Siluria's technology with Linde's separations and recovery systems for licensing to the petrochemical industry at existing ethylene plants or for new world scale ethylene plants. With this initial Series D financing, Siluria has raised just under $100 million since its inception. Siluria is currently in discussions with additional strategic and financial investors to complete a total Series D financing of approximately $50 million. Siluria Technologies is pioneering the commercial production of fuels and chemicals made from clean, abundant natural gas. Siluria's break through Oxidative Coupling of Methane ("OCM") process technology is believed to be the first commercially viable process to directly convert methane to ethylene. Siluria's second process technology can convert ethylene to liquid fuels such as gasoline, diesel or jet fuel. This enables natural gas to potentially supplement petroleum as the worldwide basis for transportation fuels and commodity chemicals. Siluria's revolutionary catalyst and process technologies uniquely combine nanomaterials, templating and chemical engineering, to convert natural gas into higher value products using efficient processes that can be seamlessly integrated into existing industry infrastructure. Saudi Aramco Energy Ventures is the corporate venturing subsidiary of the Saudi Arabian Oil Company (Saudi Aramco), the world's leading fully

integrated energy and petrochemical enterprise. Headquartered in Dhahran with offices in North America and Europe, SAEV's mission is to invest globally in start-ups and high growth companies with technologies of strategic importance to its parent, Saudi Aramco. per gallon gasoline gallon equivalent, without valuable co-products such as animal feed or commodity chemicals. This FOA seeks to improve the value proposition for algal biofuels by employing multi-disciplinary consortia to produce algae bioproduct precursors (alongside fuel components), as well as single-investigator or small-team technology development projects focused on crop protection and CO2 utilization technologies for improving biomass productivity. BETO hopes these strategies will enable a 30–50% cost reduction for algal biofuels.

Physicist Tilman Pfau and his group showed, that these superposition states last for several millionth of a second -- too short for a real relationship, but long enough for molecules, as Björn Butscher and his colleagues report in the online version of Nature Phyiscs. Only recently, the Stuttgart physicists provided experimental proof for the existence of the so-called ultralong-range Rydberg molecules. These are weakly bound molecules where one atom is in its ground-state GIANT MOLECULES IN A QUANTUM while the other atom is in a highly SUPERPOSITION : The couples are pairs of atoms that are held together by excited state -- a Rydberg state.
