COMEX FOR $2.3 BILLION Mexico City : PPG Industries has reached a definitive agreement to acquire Consorcio Comex (Mexico City), a leading Mexican producer of architectural and industrial coatings, for $2.3 billion. The deal follows two months after SherwinWilliams (SW) cancelled plans to acquire the Mexican operations of Comex for $2.3 billion after Mexico's federal competition commission blocked the deal. The privately held Comex has approximately 3,900 employees, eight manufacturing facilities, and six distribution centers, and had sales of approximately $1 billion in 2013. Comex sells coatings and related products in Mexico and Central America through approximately 3,600 stores that are independently owned and operated by more than 700 concessionaires. The deal is subject to regulatory approvals and other customary reviews. PPG expects the regulatory review to take four to six months. PPG says the deal is its largest since the 2008 acquisition of SigmaKalon for €2.2 billion (US$3.2 billion). SW''s attempted acquisition of Comex was announced in November 2012 and abandoned in April 2014 after failing to secure antitrust approvals

Stringent processes ensure that timelines are adhered to and implementation over-runs are avoided. Quality testing and preventive checks are essential part of our processes. Prices for the chemical building block ethylene rose in December, recovering most of the price erosion seen during the previous three months as domestic and export demand strengthened for the plastic derivative, polyethylene, according to the chemical industry report PetroChem Wire (PCW). US ethylene prices shot up from 50.375 cents per pound at the start of December to 61.5 cents per pound by December 24. Prices eased back to 59.5 cents per pound, but the run-up was significantly higher than during most months this year. On a centsper-gallon basis, the December price increase is equal to a 27.1cent increase. Ethane and propane, two of the raw materials used to make ethylene, showed dissimilar price movements in the last month of 2012, with ethane dropping 3 cents per gallon in December and propane rising 6.5 cents per gallon boosted by foreign demand. Strong polyethylene export demand in November and December, especially to Europe and Africa, helped keep North American producers' inventories tighter than expected. Polyethylene buying interest quieted at the end of December as the holidays approached, but buying activity was

CHEMICAL BUSINESS WEEKLY

strong during most of December ahead of a 5 cent-per-pound price increase proposed to take effect January 1. Producers' polyethylene inventories were lower later in December as a result of the heavy buying. “The sharp rise in ethylene prices during December coincided with a number of unexpected outages at ethylene plants in the U.S. Gulf region,” said Kathy Hall, PCW's chief editor. “The end of the year is typically a time when producers and consumers alike operate with low inventories. Just one unplanned plant outage can have a noticeable impact on overall supply. This past December, at least five different plants had production issues ranging from overnight blips to multi-week shutdowns. The strong downstream demand coupled with emerging supply-side concerns caused ethylene to trade far higher than anyone predicted in just a few weeks.” Ethylene and its associated products, such as propylene and benzene, are base chemicals that are further processed to make nearly every other petrochemical in existence. The most commonly known of these are plastic resins, such as polyethylene and polypropylene, as well as liquid solvents used in a variety of consumer and industrial applications. The PetroChem Wire is a daily newsletter serving the petrochemical industry. It counts every major petrochemical and refining company among its readers, as well as many major manufacturing concerns, global conglomerates, industry

consultants, equity analysts and government agencies. It also produces maps of the ethylene plant and pipeline system. MOU FOR FUEL CELL POWER SYSTEM : AFC Energy (Dunsfold, UK), an industrial fuel cell power company, has announced the signing of a memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Chang Shin Chemical Co., a leading South Korean hydrogen supplier, for multiple fuel cell systems with a total potential generating capacity of up to 5 MW. This is the first commercial agreement signed by the company in South Korea, one of the world's fastest growing markets for large scale, stationary fuel cell power generating systems. AFC will use hydrogen produced at Chang Shin's chemical works to manufacturing products at its facility. Ems on the other hand reports higher sales and earnings, buys partner out of Mexican automotive JV Ems Group (Switzerland) on Friday reported its six months results covering January through end of June 2014. Net operating income was up 17.5% to 215 million Swiss francs ($241.3 million) on 5% higher sales of SF999 million. Ebitda was 15% higher at SF242 million and Ebitda margin advanced from 22% to 24.2%. The company says it was able to expand its business, particularly in the automotive industry with numerous new applications using its highperformance polymers. At the beginning of July Ems bought its partner out of Grupo Plascosa EFTEC SA.

TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION IS ESSENTIAL

R

aw or unprocessed crude oil is not generally useful in industrial applications, although "light, sweet" (low viscosity, low sulfur) crude oil has been used directly as a burner fuel to produce steam for the propulsion of seagoing vessels. The lighter elements, however, form explosive vapors in the fuel tanks and are therefore hazardous, especially in warships. Instead, the hundreds of different hydrocarbon molecules in crude oil are separated in a refinery into components which can be used as fuels, lubricants, and as feedstocks in petrochemical processes that manufacture such products as plastics, detergents, solvents, elastomers and fibers such as nylon and polyesters. Petroleum fossil fuels are burned in internal combustion engines to provide power for ships, automobiles, aircraft engines, lawn mowers, chainsaws, and other machines. Different boiling points allow the hydrocarbons to be separated by distillation. Since the lighter liquid products are in great demand for use in internal combustion engines, a modern refinery will convert heavy hydrocarbons and lighter gaseous elements into these higher value products. Oil can be used in a variety of ways because it contains hydrocarbons of varying molecular masses, forms and lengths such as paraffins, aromatics, naphthenes (or cycloalkanes), alkenes, dienes, and alkynes. While the molecules in crude oil include different atoms such as sulfur and nitrogen, the hydrocarbons are the most common form of molecules, which are molecules of varying lengths and complexity made of hydrogen and carbon atoms, and a small number of oxygen atoms. The differences in the structure of these molecules account for their varying physical and chemical properties, and it is this variety that makes crude oil useful in a broad range of several applications. Oil refineries are large scale plants, processing about a hundred thousand to several hundred thousand barrels of crude oil a day. Because of the high capacity, many of the units operate continuously, as opposed to processing in batches, at steady state or nearly steady state for months to years. The high capacity also makes process optimization and advanced process control very desirable. GE recently announced two new products to help refineries process incompatible crude oil blends. Unlike many traditional asphaltene dispersants, GE's new EmBreak 2167 and EmBreak 2168 crude 16

stabilizers are ashless and do not contain any metals that could contribute to catalyst contamination or equipment fouling. These new oil-based crude stabilizers are a part of GE's patent-pending technology that can be used specifically in refinery desalters and other oil and water separation equipment. They are part of GE's family of EmBreak emulsion breakers, which offer a full suite of products that span the entire range of crudes, delivering superior desalter performance and potentially reducing total costs of operation. Traditional asphaltene dispersants can contain metals, such as phosphorous or calcium, which can act as a catalyst to foul downstream equipment. Fouling is the accumulation of unwanted material on solid surfaces that impedes the function of the equipment. GE's new EmBreak 2167 and 2168 crude stabilizers are ashless, do not contain metals and outperform existing phosphorus and calcium-based compounds tested by GE. Being ashless and metal free is a benefit to downstream units and prevents fouling and poisoning. Being able to process discounted crude oils depends on the other crudes that they are blended with, and that is where EmBreak 2167 and 2168 come into the picture. GE developed a testing methodology to predict crude oil incompatibility and created innovative chemical crude stabilizer solutions to help successfully process these incompatible crude oils. GE's new crude stabilizers help refineries more effectively anticipate and respond to processing issues associated with opportunity crudes and their incompatibility. Incompatible crudes blends may precipitate asphaltenes or other heavy molecular weight aliphatics resulting in uncontrolled emulsions, which can cause poor effluent brine quality as well as deteriorating salt and solids removal efficiency. Some of the processing issues and risks associated with opportunity crudes include: Poor salt removal efficiency higher corrosion of asset risk. Poor effluent brine quality regulation risk as well as higher reprocessing costs to separate oil, water and solids. Poor solids removal efficiency higher fouling risk and potential erosion of downstream equipment. GE's new Embreak 2167 and 2168 coupled with GE's innovative testing capability can help refineries more effectively anticipate and respond to processing issues associated with opportunity crudes.

HYDRAULIC FRACTURING AND PRODUCTION ENHANCEMENT SERVICES

H

alliburton announces that it has signed an agreement with the SPT Energy Group Inc. affiliate, Petrotech (Xinjiang) Engineering Co., Ltd., to establish a joint venture company focused on hydraulic fracturing and production enhancement services in Xinjiang, China. The new company, Xinjiang HDTD Oilfield Services Co. Ltd., will provide fracture stimulation services, including design and analysis, data acquisition, and pumping and chemical services in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. This is Halliburton's first joint venture for hydraulic fracturing services in China. A ceremony was held on Wednesday at the China World Hotel in Beijing to celebrate the establishment of Xinjiang HDTD Oilfield Services Co., Ltd. An estimated 200 guests representing the oil and gas industry in China, as well as a number of local government officials, attended the event. Halliburton Chairman, President and CEO Dave Lesar delivered the keynote address. SPT Energy Group has provided oilfield technical services in Xinjiang's Tarim oilfield for 20 years, with a market share ranked first among privately-owned companies. Seventy-five percent of the market share in high-end completion services in the field was achieved through SPT's collaboration with Halliburton over the past seven years, and the market for horizontal drilling and fracturing services is increasing rapidly. By 2025 the total barrels of oil equivalent (BOE) in the

20

Tarim oilfield is expected to be 50 million tons, while total BOE throughout Xinjiang province is expected to reach 100 million tons and account for up to one-third of China's BOE. Lesar said, “Halliburton looks forward to strengthening our partnership with SPT Energy Group by bringing a suite of integrated, comprehensive solutions to the challenge of developing China's unconventional reservoirs. Our basin-specific knowledge, industry-leading technologies and expert people have solved unconventional challenges around the world, and we are excited about growing our presence in China.” David Zeng, Halliburton's vice president for China, said, “Over the next decade there will be great opportunities from the parallel development of conventional and unconventional resources in China. SPT's strong client relationships combined with Halliburton's technical expertise positions Xinjiang HDTD to be the leading service provider as we develop westward.” Founded in 1919, Halliburton is one of the world's largest providers of products and services to the energy industry. With more than 80,000 employees, representing 140 nationalities in approximately 80 countries, the company serves the upstream oil and gas industry throughout the lifecycle of the reservoir – from locating hydrocarbons and managing geological data, to drilling and formation evaluation, well construction and completion, and

optimizing production through the life of the field. AMENDED SILICATES HGX -MERCURY EMISSION CONTROLLER : Novinda Corporation, a leader in non-carbon mercury removal technologies, announced recently that its flagship product – Amended Silicates HgX (AS-HgX) - received the prestigious R&D 100 Award as one of the best technology products introduced in the past year. Presented by R&D Magazine, the R&D 100 Awards recognize the year's top 100 technology products from industry, academia, and government-sponsored research, ranging from chemistry to materials to biomedical breakthroughs. Novinda's AS-HgX is a noncarbon mercury capture reagent that removes mercury from coal-fired power plant emissions, enabling utilities to comply with the EPA's strict Mercury & Air Toxic Standards (MATS), effective in April 2015. A mineral-based product, AS-HgX removes mercury via a chemical reaction, providing economic and environmental advantages unavailable with competing products. Proven to be extremely effective, as well as cost competitive at removing mercury with two to three times the efficiency of the market's standard mercury removal products, Novinda's AS-HgX product has delivered sustained performance in full-scale tests at more than 50 power plants. In addition, a recent Life-Cycle Assessment study

CHEMICAL BUSINESS WEEKLY

CHEMICAL MACHINERY ARTICLE demonstrated that AS-HgX is a much cleaner way to remove mercury, producing greenhouse gas emissions that were only one-tenth of those associated with powered activated carbon (PAC) products. As a non-carbon product, AS HgX also leaves fly ash (a byproduct of burning coal) pristine for reuse in manufacturing concrete, eliminating landfill burial of millions of tons of fly ash annually and providing utilities with substantial savings and a valuable revenue stream. “We are honored to be selected as an R&D 100 Award winner. This distinction is an acknowledgment of the environmental and economic advantages of AS-HgX and a tribute to the people here who have worked so hard to bring this product to market,” said Ed Williams, Novinda's CEO. TECHNOLOGY AND ENGINEERING FOR PRODUCTION OF LIGNOCELLULOSIC-BASED NBUTANOL : Cobalt Technologies, Inc. signed an exclusive global cooperation and supply agreement with ANDRITZ Inc., the U.S. subsidiary of international technology Group ANDRITZ, to integrate Cobalt's proprietary lignocellulosic pre-treatment process for the production of nbutanol with ANDRITZ's customized pre-treatment systems.
