CHEMICAL ARTICLE GLOBAL CLEANING CHEMICAL MARKET: RISING HEALTHCARE SPENDING KEY DEMAND DRIVER

C

leaning can be particularly important in healthcare facilities, to limit the spread of infection, as well as for aesthetic considerations. To ensure that the job is done effectively, facilities rely on a wide variety of potent chemicals to attack and remove contaminants. Cleaning chemicals in common use in healthcare facilities fall into several product categories including: *Air fresheners *Bathroom and tile cleaners *Dusting aids *Fabric protectants *Floor polishes/waxes *Furniture maintenance products (aerosols) *General purpose cleaners *Glass cleaners While these chemicals may be beneficial when acting on their intended targets, they may also have the capacity to cause inadvertent damage to people (both to those using them and to bystanders exposed to them), and to other creatures and objects in the environment. It is advisable to know what to look for when purchasing or specifying cleaning chemicals, and what to watch out for when using them. RISKS : Cleaning chemicals can cause damage by direct contact with skin, eyes, or other sensitive tissue, or through inhalation of vapors. This section lists a number of specific risks involved in using various types of cleaning product. A good source of information on specific risks is the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). The US Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) requires the manufacturer of any hazardous chemical sold in the US to provide an MSDS listing items such as: * Physical and chemical characteristics *Potential hazardous effects *Recommendations for appropriate protective measures *Recommendations for disposal Your vendor should be able to supply you with an MSDS for any cleaning product you purchase. Skin and Eye Irritants: Many cleaning chemicals are either mildly or strongly irritating to the skin and/or eyes. Check the pH level (on the MSDS), 14

check the “Health Hazard” and “Special Protection” sections of the MSDS, product label or other technical product information. Check for products that: *Are corrosive to the eyes, skin or mucous membranes *Can cause serious eye or mucous membrane damage *Can burn the skin Choose products that are the least irritating - those listed as "mild irritants" on the MSDS in preference to those listed as "severe irritants". TOXIC CHEMICALS : Check the “Ingredients” section of the MSDS to determine whether a cleaning product contains toxic chemicals that can impact human health of workers, patients and visitors. If any of the listed ingredients are identified as carcinogens, it would be advisable to look for alternative products Some cleaning chemicals present particular problems. Examples include : Quaternary ammonium compounds. Long-term exposure to disinfectants containing quaternary ammonium compounds may lead to occupational asthma and hypersensitivity syndrome. Floor strippers and Polishing Compounds. Chemicals in these products include diethylene glycol ethyl ether, aliphatic petroleum distillates and nonyl-phenol ethoxylate, ethanolamine (a known sensitizer), butoxyethanol, and sodium hydroxide. Exposure to these chemicals may cause headaches, eye irritation, dizziness, nausea, difficulty concentrating, fatigue, wheezing, coughing, asthma attacks, respiratory infections, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, and nose, throat and skin irritation. VOC Content: Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a significant source of indoor air pollution and photochemical smog . The VOC level should be listed on the MSDS, or the manufacturer should be able to supply a technical data sheet that includes the concentration of VOCs in a product's formulation. Choose the product with the lowest VOC level. DYES : Dyes are sometimes added to cleaning products to help housekeeping staff identify a particular product, and to keep them from confusing it with another similar product, which under some

circumstances can have dangerous results. However, many dyes are environmental toxicants, and some are even carcinogens. Some in the medical community advocate removing dyes and instead using alternative packaging that clearly identifies the product to housekeeping staff. Packaging : Certain forms of packaging can actually reduce occupational exposure to the worker. There is also packaging that works toward environmental sustainability by offering recyclable, refillable, reusable packaging, cleaning products offered in bulk or concentrated form, or packaging made of recycled content. COMPLIANCE REQUIREMENTS : Certain Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations relate to cleaning chemicals : OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard (HazCom), requires that information concerning any associated health or physical hazards be transmitted to employees via comprehensive hazard communication programs (Go to HERC HazCom page). The programs must include: *Written Program. A written that meets the requirements of the Hazard Communication Standard (HazCom). *Labels. In-plant containers of hazardous chemicals must be labeled, tagged, or marked with the identity of the material and appropriate hazard warnings. *Material Safety Data Sheets. Employers must have an MSDS for each hazardous chemical which they use and MSDSs must be readily accessible to employees when they are in their work areas during their workshifts. *Employee Information and Training. Each employee who may be “exposed” to hazardous chemicals when working must be provided information and be trained prior to initial assignment to work with a hazardous chemical, and whenever the hazard changes. *Depending on the ingredients contained in the cleaner and its manner of use, employee protection may be required, including ventilation controls, personal protective equipment, clothing or gloves, or other applicable precautions. This assessment should be made by the employer, again, based on the unique conditions of use of the CHEMICAL BUSINESS WEEKLY

CHEMICAL ARTICLE product at that establishment. *Where the eyes or body of any person may be exposed to injurious corrosive materials, employers must provide suitable mechanisms for quick drenching or flushing of the eyes and body within the work area for immediate emergency use [1910.151(c)]. Certain Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations may also apply to cleaning chemicals : The Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) provides EPA with the authority to oversee the registration, distribution, sale and use of pesticides. FIFRA applies to all types of pesticides, including antimicrobials, which includes disinfectants and other cleaning compounds that are intended to control microorganisms on surfaces. If the sole active ingredient of a cleaning chemical is a P or U-listed waste (this information is available on the MSDS) the product itself must be managed as a hazardous waste. A cleaning chemical might also have to be considered a characteristic hazardous waste due to: CORROSIVITY : It is important to check the pH level of the cleaning product. Many cleaning products have pHs higher than 11 or lower than 2. A cleaning product may be considered hazardous if it has a pH of less than 2 or greater than 12.5. This information can be determined form the MSDS under the “Physical Data category. *toxicity *reactivity *Alternatives Look for products that are certified to meet certain environmental and health and safety criteria. There are several accrediting bodies that make determinations about whether cleaning chemicals have met environmental criteria. Global demand for I&I cleaning chemicals is expected to grow over four percent per annum to more than $50 billion in 2018. Significant gains will be realized in the healthcare market segment, where a rise in the number of hospital stays and concerns about healthcare associated infections (HAIs) will drive increases in healthcare expenditures worldwide. The manufacturing sector is also expected to be a strong source of growth, especially in developing economies, as these countries focus on increasing their cleaning standards. Disinfectants and

CHEMICAL BUSINESS WEEKLY

sanitizers will benefit most from these trends. Across the industry, changes in the product mix are expected as firms increasingly focus on sustainability and operational efficiency. Increased spending on healthcare will continue to be an important driver of growth in I&I cleaning chemical demand. Greater healthcare utilization will stem from aging populations in Europe, North America, Australia, China, and Japan, as well as from rising prosperity in many developing countries where routine healthcare was previously unaffordable. Increased visitation rates will require more frequent cleaning in these facilities, leading to demand gains for most I&I cleaning products. Disinfectant and sanitizer sales will be particularly strong, as these products feature heavily in strategies to prevent the spread of HAIs, a major focus of healthcare. FOOD PROCESSING TO ALSO BE A FACTOR : The manufacturing sector, particularly food and beverage processing, will also support rising demand going forward. Increased spending power and continued adoption of more Western style eating habits will expand food and beverage manufacturing in developing countries. Rising global trade in packaged food and beverage products will also be a contributing factor as developing countries adopt more stringent production protocols in order to meet the regulatory standards of target export markets. Along with healthy growth in this market overall, widespread coverage of foodborne illness outbreaks and product recalls due to bacterial contamination will boost demand. PRODUCT MIX SHIFTING TOWARD WATER-BASED CHEMICALS : Cleaning chemical manufacturers continue to make their products more sustainable, cost effective, and user friendly. This is leading to changes in the cleaning chemical product MIX. Newer cleaning systems often feature waterbased cleaning chemicals, increasingly in concentrated formats, combined with efficient, easy-to-use equipment. These improvements can result in considerable decreases in the amounts of water and energy used while also providing end users with lower labor costs and higher operational efficiency. Stimulated by increasing efforts to prevent the spread of disease in healthcare and food and beverage

manufacturing applications, the global demand for industrial and institutional (I&I) cleaning chemicals is projected to increase from $37.5 billion in 2013 to $46.3 billion in 2018, registering an annual growth of 4.3 percent, according to Freedonia Group's new report. The fastest growth is expected to occur in healthcare, due to a rise in the number of hospital stays and concerns about healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). The manufacturing sector is also expected to be a significant source of growth, particularly in developing economies, as rising incomes lead to increases in demand for processed food and beverage products and these countries focus on increasing their cleaning standards. Disinfectant and sanitiser sales are expected to be particularly strong, as these products feature heavily in strategies to prevent the spread of HAIs, which is a major focus within the healthcare industry. Strong growth in food and beverage manufacturing will be another important driver of I&I cleaning chemical demand. Increased processed food and beverage production will reflect rising consumption in developing countries due to growing spending power and the continued adoption of more Western style eating habits. General purpose cleaners will continue to make up the largest share of I&I cleaning products and experience healthy growth going forward. However, according to the Freedonia report, the nature of this growth will be complex, impacted by a diverse set of factors. Market maturity in many developed countries, as well as product substitution in response to the marketing of targeted, specialised cleaners, will restrain advances. This will be balanced by gains in less developed markets where formulated general purpose cleaners are increasingly used in the place of basic chemicals, and by the shift toward more sustainable, cost effective, and user friendly (but ultimately higher value) products in places like the US, Western Europe, and Japan. 15

EDITORIAL NEW FERTILIZER UNITS TO BOOST PRODUCTION IN NEXT FIVE YEARS

T

he Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers Ananth Kumar ruled out any raise in the price of urea. He was replying to a discussion on a private members bill in the Rajya Sabha last week. He said that Narendra Modi government is not thinking of removing any subsidy, on any fertilizers or those relating to food security of India. The minister also pointed out that government is making every effort to increase production of fertilizers in the country by reviving closed fertilizer companies at Gorakhpur, Talcher and at Ramagundam to begin with. He also proposed that the issue of reviving FACT can be discussed further with Union finance minister and the Chief Minister of Kerala. The Minister said government would extend subsidy to the three southern-based fertiliser companies in Mangalore, Chennai and Tuticorin, provided the State governments waive VAT on Nephtha based on which these plants are producing fertilizer at a high cost. While calling for a comprehensive fertilizer policy he said there needs to be a scientific debate on how to rationalize Nutrient based subsidy (NBS) to bring down prices of N-P-K fertilizers. We need to take urea, NPK, organic, biofertilisers and micro nutrients into consideration while discussing issues of imbalanced use of chemical fertilizers, he said. The minister hoped that the announcement in the budget for setting up over thousand soil testing centers would help farmers to plan the mix of fertilizers that they should use. He also thanked the Prime Minister for providing the facility of soil testing to the farmers at a cost of over sixteen crore rupees. The fertilizer industry earlier said that the revised retention prices of urea producing units based on new consumption norms could lead to imminent closure of several plants and cripple operations in many others. It estimates a loss of eight lakh tonnes of urea in the five months of the current season which could lead to shortages and impact heavily on foodgrains production. In a statement issued here, the Fertiliser Association of India (FAI) has pointed out that the reduction in retention prices is ``very steep" especially for the naphtha based plants. The gas based plants could also suffer significant reduction in the retention prices. The FAI says the majority of the naphtha based plants affected by the decision face ``immediate" 16

closure. This is because they are required to pay huge sums to the fertilizer industry coordination committee (FICC) for the period since April 1, 2000. The industry's reaction is to the notification issued by the Chemicals and Fertilizers Ministry revising downwards the retention prices of 13 urea manufacturing units. This is meant to reflect revision in consumption norms on an interim basis, based on the actual levels achieved during 1999-2000 or the existing level, whichever is lower. The immediate closure of at least four plants MCF in Mangalore, SPIC in Tuticorin, Zuari in Goa and Duncans in Kanpur - will result in drastic reduction in urea availability during the season. November and December are the peak months for consumption and this can lead to severe shortages since imports may be difficult at such short notice. As a result, the farming community will be adversely affected and foodgrains production will suffer a setback, according to the industry statement. Today the fertilizer sector plays a dominant role in achieving self-sufficiency in foodgrain production and it can hardly be over-emphasised. The increase in fertilizer consumption has contributed significantly to a sustained improvement in the production of foodgrains in the country. Over the years, the Indian industry has become largely self-reliant in design engineering and execution of fertilizer projects. Fertilizer plant operators have fully absorbed and assimilated the latest in fertilizer technology and are in a position to operate and maintain the plants at their optimum levels without any foreign assistance. A major challenge that the industry faces today is that of being exposed to international competition in the more open WTO regime. Because of the WTO commitments, quantitative restrictions had to be removed. Also, cheaper imports too threaten the domestic industry specially the units that do not use gas as feedstock. On account of inherent inefficiencies and cost disadvantage, non-gas-based units producing over 30 per cent of the domestic output would find it difficult to compete in a globally competitive environment. While, in the short run domestic companies may enjoy the protection of differential subsidy in some form or the other. However, in the long run they will have to compete on a stand-alone basis.

ADJUSTABLE CRADLE LIFTING ATTACHMENT FOR HANDLING LARGE FOIL : New to Packline Materials Handling and Ultrasource LLC, is the large adjustable cradle attachment for lifting and handling large rolls of film or foil; ideal for the food and drinks processing industries, as well as pharmaceutical industries. This bespoke lifting attachment enables the operator to lift and move very long rolls using a shaft through the core of the roll. This bespoke attachment was designed to enable the customer to lift and move very long rolls, using a shaft through the core of the roll. The rolls were in excess of 200kg, meaning that the cradle attachment needed to be well supported in order to support the load being lifted. In order to achieve this, stainless steel back plates and skid plates were added to the assembly to increase the rigidity and strength overall. The attachment arms can support a shaft of up to 130mm diameter, giving the cradle attachment a large range of shafts that it is capable of lifting. The arms are secured into place using two star knobs on the rear of the cradle attachment back plate. The star knobs are tightened to ensure that the arms can be held at the correct distance apart whilst moving a load.
