specialty alloys used in aerospace, energy, medical, transportation, consumer and industrial products. The company that Wulfsohn is taking over is substantially larger than the one he is leaving. Ashland ranked 334th on the 2014 Fortune 500 list. Its 11,000 employees produced revenues of $6.1 billion in 2014 (the company's fiscal year ends in September). Reading, Pennsylvania-based Carpenter has 4,900 employees and had 2013 revenues of $2.3 billion. Wulfsohn led Carpenter's senior management team through a major restructuring, delivering strong results. Under his leadership, the company: constructed a highly advanced super alloy facility; expanded its scope of geographic operations; introduced new differential technology; and successfully integrated multiple acquisitions. From fiscal 2010 through fiscal 2014, Carpenter Technology's annual sales grew 93 percent, operating margin improved from 5 percent to 13 percent, and fully diluted earnings per share increased from $0.04 to $2.47 "Bill met or exceeded nearly every criteria we outlined for Ashland's new CEO," said Barry Perry, Ashland's lead director and chair of the board's Special Committee on CEO Succession, in a statement "We strongly believe he is the right leader to build on the company's solid foundation and maximize the tremendous growth opportunities that lay ahead. Ashland has been fortunate to have had a highperforming CEO and a talented CHEMICAL BUSINESS WEEKLY

CHEMICAL NEWS senior management team, which included several potential successors. Ultimately the board was attracted to Bill's impressive track record and a shared objective of creating even greater value for Ashland's shareholders." Ashland makes chemicals for the architectural, automotive, construction, energy, food and beverage, personal care and pharmaceutical sectors. Roughly half of Ashland's 2014 revenue came from outside North America, the company says. The company operates in roughly 100 countries and has three divisions: specialty ingredients, which accounted for 41 percent of 2014 revenues; Valvoline, which accounted for 33 percent of revenues; and performance materials, 26 percent of revenues. An "on-boarding" process is under development to allow time for Wulfsohn and O'Brien to work together alongside other members of Ashland's senior management team and the board. In addition, Perry, a member of Ashland's board of directors since 2007, will work closely with Wulfsohn on his transition plan to ensure continued momentum and continuity. "Although I was not actively seeking a new CEO role, I was attracted by the opportunity to lead a larger, well-run company with a reputation for delivering superior product innovation, unmatched technical expertise and market-beating shareholder value," Wulfsohn said in the statement. "The Ashland board CHEMICAL BUSINESS WEEKLY

also convinced me that they were interested in pursuing additional strategic growth opportunities in the global marketplace. I look forward to engaging quickly and directly with Ashland's employees, customers and investors." "Bill is inheriting a very different Ashland than when I assumed the role in 2002," said O'Brien. "His global experience within the specialty chemicals industry, combined with the insights and knowledge he has gained as CEO of a public company, will serve him well at Ashland.

U

nion Minister for Chemicals & Fertilizers Ananth Kumar drew attention of the industry leaders to the need for adopting proactive approach towards corrosion control in manufacturing activities. In his address at the plenary session of the CORCON 2014: International Conference and Exposition in Mumbai on Friday, Kumar said the government as well as the industry should change the mindset and move with enthusiasm to adopt corrosion control and management technique, without considering it as a repair and maintenance issue. The Minister informed that according to a recent report of the World Corrosion Organization, the annual corrosion cost is approximately US $ 2.5 trillions or 3-4% of the global GDP. In India alone, the loss on account of corrosion is estimated at around $ 67 billion ( over Rs 4 lakh crores), the minister added. He said, in the fertilizer industry too, corrosion is a major concern due to corrosive nature of raw materials. Kumar said controlling corrosion requires significant expenditure, but it is more rewarding in the long run in terms of increased plant safety, better performance and enhanced asset life. Kumar said the Prime Minister has laid great emphasis on 'Make In 14

India' with zero defect and zero effect on environment. “In this regard, corrosion management will facilitate the manufacturing sector to enhance its competitive edge in the global market “he added. He said corrosion control should become an integral part of 'good manufacturing practice'. The Minister also laid stress on increased Research & Development in inventing environmentally sustainable corrosion control techniques. CORCON 2014 is a four day international conference that brings together experts and manufacturers facilitating ideas exchange. It also showcases products like corrosion preventing products and services, measures, metals of least corrosion acceptance etc. Corrosion is a significant concern for the chemical processing industry. Corrosion failures can disrupt production or cause unintended release of chemicals into the environment. There are many variables that may affect corrosion in a chemical plant. Some of these variables are listed below: * Contamination/Impurities * Quality of water * Aeration * Galvanic couples * Material selection * Effects of welding * Stagnation * Turbulence

* * * * * * * *

Flow rate Line size Concentration Temperature Pressure Deposits Crevices Start-Up/Shutdown Variation from planned operating variables can have a significant effect on expected results. Materials are commonly selected based on past experience, corrosion tests, and the literature. Engineers need to have a comprehension of the process to understand the appropriate material choices for a given application. Additionally, proper maintenance and process control are essential. Materials used in chemical plants vary widely depending on the application. Carbon steels, stainless steels, Nickel alloys, Copper alloys, and Titanium are some of the alloys regularly used in chemical processing plants. Seasonal variation in temperatures and variations due to start-up/shutdown variables are some examples of issues that can cause unanticipated problems in chemical processing plants. It is not uncommon over time for plants to be operated with process variables different than originally planned. Seasonal variation in temperatures and variations due to start-up/shutdown variables are some examples of issues that can cause unanticipated problems in chemical processing plants. It is not uncommon over time for plants to be operated with process variables different than originally planned. It is not uncommon for flow rates or feed stock composition or impurities to significantly vary over time. This may necessitate a change in materials, design, or operating conditions. The annual cost of corrosion and of protection against corrosion has been estimated to incur a loss of over 6 billion dollars. Though this may not be accurate estimate but it is not difficult to perceive that the cost is enormous when we consider that corrosion' occurs, with varying degrees of severity, in practically all cases where metals and alloys are used. All of us are familiar with the rapid rate at which iron and steel corrode or rust when exposed to atmosphere and rain. Some of the fluids which cause corrosion difficulties serious enough to warrant actual investigation are the following: fresh, distilled, salt, and mine waters; rural, urban, and industrial atmospheres; steam and other

gases such as chlorine, ammonia, 'oxygen, carbon disulfide, sulfur dioxide, and fuel. gases; mineral acids such as nitric, sulfuric, and hydrochloric; organic acids suchas acetic, formic, and-citric; alkalis such as caustic and ammonium hydroxide; soils; solvents such as alcohols and dry cleaning materials; vegetable and petroleum oils and a variety of food products. The two common materials known to cause corrosion are air and water. Considerable effort and money have been spent to minimize their destructive effects. Aside from the cost in dollars, corrosion is a serious problem because it directly and definitely contributes to the depletion of our natural resources. For example, steel is made from iron ore and our reserves of iron ore are diminishing. In addition, approximately four tons of coal is required to produce one ton of steel. Our copper reserves are dwindling, and copper is one of the principal elements used in the production of corrosion-resistant alloys. Corrosion is truly a major industry but, unfortunately, one which is "in reverse." Its waste obliges all concerned to minimize or eliminate it in so far as possible. In addition, chemists and chemical engineers have other vital interests in the corrosion' problem. In the chemical industry, the

trend toward higher temperatures and pressures have made possible new processes or improvements in old processes resulting in better yields, greater .speed, or lower cost of production. Higher temperatures and pressures usually involve more severe corrosion conditions. Many of the present day operations would not have been possible or economical without the use of corrosion-resistant materials. The annual tonnage of stainless steel purchased by the chemical industry today is many times greater than that purchased ten years ago. REDUCING MAINTENANCE COSTS : Substantial savings can be obtained in most types of chemical plants through the use of corrosion-resistant materials of construction. One example is classic in this respect. A plant effected an annual saving of more than 10,000 dollars merely by changing the bolt material on some equipment from one alloy to another more resistant to the conditions involved. The cost of this change was negligible. In another case of waste-acid recovery plant operated in the red for several months until a serious corrosion problem was solved. This plant was built to take care of an important waste disposal problem. Maintenance costs are now scrutinized because the labor picture accents the necessity of low cost operation.

CHEMICAL MACHINERY ARTICLE GLASS PROTECTION TECHNOLOGY: UNIQUE EXPERTISE IN GLASS COATINGS FOR RETURNABLE BOTTLES

A

rkema boasts world-unique expertise in glass coatings for returnable bottles. The chemical Group is the only company to offer bottlers a glass protection technology, Kercoat®, which delays the onset of white marks and scuffing. It also offers a masking product, Opticoat®, to help conceal scratches. Kercoat® and Opticoat® complement each other and so considerably improve the appearance and service life of bottles. Arkema will present both solutions at the Brau tradeshow in Nüremberg from November 11 to 13 2014. Scuffing resulting from various contacts during filling and a growing number of return cycles for returnable glass bottles impairs their appearance as well as their marketing value. It has been shown that after 10 filling cycles, bottles with untreated glass no longer meet high-end packaging requirements. The appearance of bottles influences the brand image and therefore sales, and so it is vital for brewers and for bottlers of soft drinks and mineral water to ensure that their bottles always look like new. BOTTLES PROTECTED WITH ARKEMA SOLUTIONS : To address this major concern for bottlers and help them extend the lifetime of their fleet of returnable bottles without loss of their original flawless appearance, Arkema offers two solutions: KERCOAT TO DELAY THE ONSET OF

20

SCUFFING : Applying the Kercoat protection solutionon bottle filling lines helps delay the onset of scuffing and white marks, while preserving the bottles' burst pressure resistance. Trials have shown that after 20 cycles, bottles treated with Kercoat exhibit virtually no white marks, thereby helping significantly extend their service life. Thanks to its properties, the Kercoat technology affords savings of some 20% over a year in the cost of purchasing and maintaining fleets of returnable glass bottles. This unique solution in the market includes the protection product, the installation of a spray system, and technical support. OPTICOAT TO MASK SCUFFING : For scuffed bottles, Arkema provides a masking coating technology called Opticoat that helps considerably extend the service life of returnable bottles. This coating forms a thin masking layer that restores glass appearance and feel. Opticoat can be applied on dry, wet, warm or cold bottles: it is resistant to humidity and is environmentally sound. COLLABORATION WITH CARLSBERG TO EXTEND THE SERVICE LIFE OF THEIR BOTTLES: Arkema has been collaborating with brewer Carlsberg since January 2014 to optimize the environmental impact of their returnable bottles, while also initiating the evaluation of its Kercoat et Opticoat products by other leading suppliers in the packaging industry based on the

Cradle to Cradle protocol used by the EPEA environmental body. As part of this approach, Arkema is playing an active part in the Carlsberg Circular Community whose aim is to improve all packaging materials used by the Carlsberg group. ARKEMA EDUCATES THE MARKET ABOUT ITS GLASS TREATMENT SOLUTIONS: THE GLASS COATING ACADEMY : A global chemical company and France's leading chemicals producer, Arkema is building the future of the chemical industry every day. PRODUCT ARTICLE TEN REASONS TO CHOOSE IMAGE BASED ID READERS By Didier Lacroix, Vice President, International Sales & Marketing, Cognex Corporation

I

mage-based code readers stand poised to replace laser scanners in a wide range of industries including food, beverage, consumer goods, pharmaceutical and automotive, but when considering a transition from laser scanners to image-based barcode readers, many think that the is cost too high. Today's most advanced image-based readers have overcome the technical and economic hurdles and now offer a more attractive alternative to industrial laser scanners on the factory floor. Thanks to advances in microprocessors, imaging sensors and decoding algorithms, image-based ID readers have become not only more affordable, but also more powerful. The logistics barcode-scanning market breaks down into three segments. At the entry level, a mix of conventional area-array imagers and laser scanners read codes on slow moving or stationary objects. At the high end of the scale, fixed line scan image, based systems handle high-speed, multi-sided barcode tunnel applications. Situated between these two extremes, is an entire range of applications that currently rely on an increasingly challenged generation of laser-based scanners. Today's most advanced image-based ID readers have overcome the technical and economic hurdles and now offer a more attractive alternative to industrial laser scanners on the factory floor. A laser scanner reads a barcode by measuring the size of the printed modules using light reflected from the code. One of the method's advantage is its simplicity as it is easy to set up, connect, aim and can read codes fast enough to accommodate high speeds. An unread code requires diverting the package to a manual station where an operator directs the package to its destination or replaces the defective barcode and resends package back through the sorting system. This failed condition increases the labor material costs and reduces the efficiency of sorting equipment because packages are handled more than once. To cope with these limitations, the logistics industry has designed special labels that maximize read rates and equipment specifically optimized to handle high numbers of reads.

The latest generation of image-based ID readers has proven to outperform lasers in the following areas:

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Read rate performance Long-term reliability Omnidirectional code reading 2D code reading Multiple code reading and output capability

6. 7. 8. 9. 10.

Image archiving Ease of setup and deployment Barcode quality feedback Visualization and communication Future proof

Image-based readers have several significant advantages to traditional laser scanner technology, such as : ? An image-based reader can find and locate a barcode regardless of its orientation. This can also provide a major advantage for set up, record keeping, and diagnostic purposes. ? Imagers can use advanced software, to read 1D barcodes with significantly less contrast—which is critical for poorly printed codes or for 1D barcodes not printed on a standard white label, for instance on a corrugated box for an example. ? Imagers provide the ability to overcome the issues presented by damage or reflections in the code since the imager software can use just portions of the code to 'reconstruct' the data. ? The ability to use the entire 1D barcode for reading instead of just a single laser line enables image-based readers to read a code despite low resolution, voids in portions of the code, distortion, and other defects. ? Another advantage from a reliability perspective is that image-based readers have no moving parts. ? An image-based system can display the scanner image on a monitor or industrial display in real time. ? As the user sets the system up, the display shows exactly what the scanner sees, ensuring that the images will be in-focus and that the image will include all codes on any package that comes down the conveyor. ? Area array image-based readers also offer better uptime because laser scanners use motors and other mechanical mechanisms to `move' the laser spot across the code. The logistics industry is also into the introduction of two-dimensional (2D) codes like Data Matrix. The amount of information that 2D codes can store makes them very attractive for a wide range of applications and image-based scanners are required to read these symbologies. As large retailers and internet fulfillment centers, consider capital equipment purchases to add capacity or increase throughput, raising barcode read rates by just one per cent could significantly shorten payback schedules and increase ROI. About the author : Mr. Didier Lacroix joined Cognex Corporation as the Vice President, International Sales & Marketing.
