CHEMICAL ARTICLE STYRENIC BLOCK COPOLYMERS IDEALLY SUITED FOR ADHESIVE APPLICATIONS

S

tyrenic block copolymers (SBCs) are the largest-volume market of the family of thermoplastic elastomers (TPE). TPEs have rubberlike properties, but process as thermoplastics. As with other thermoplastic elastomers, styrenic block copolymers are characterized by their ability to be processed as thermoplastic materials while possessing the physical and mechanical properties characteristic of filled vulcanized elastomers. In addition, the scrap generated is reprocessable. These factors combine to reduce the production cost of finished articles based on these materials, compared with vulcanized rubber. Styrenic block copolymers exhibit good elastic qualities, but display lower elastic recovery than standard rubbers. Also, they demonstrate good flexibility at lower temperatures but their use is limited at higher temperatures because of their relatively low softening points. There are three major types of SBCs: * Styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) block copolymers * Styrene-isoprene-styrene (SIS) block copolymers * Hydrogenated styrenic block copolymers (HSBC) The following pie chart shows world consumption of styrenic block copolymers: Styrenic block copolymers By the end of 2013, the six largest producers—Lee Chang Yung, Sinopec, Kraton, TSRC, Dynasol Elastómeros and Versalis (formerly known as Polimeri Europa)—owned 69% of global SBC production capacity. Today, Lee Chang Yung owns the largest production capacity

14

for SBCs, ahead of Sinopec and Kraton. However, Kraton is still the most important global supplier of SBCs worldwide. It has significant market shares in all world regions, whereas Sinopec is still predominantly present in China and Lee Chang Yung in Asia. In recent years, China has become the largest world market for styrenic block copolymers, surpassing North America and Europe. China is the leading footwear producer in the world, followed by India, and this industry consumes vast amounts of rubber and elastomers, including styrenic block copolymers (especially SBS). After recovery from the economic crisis in 2008–2009 and the southern European sovereign debt crisis in 2012–2013, the European economy started to grow again in the second half of 2013. Consumption of SBCs in all regions is forecast to grow, although the growth rate is declining with the maturity of the markets. The decline of the footwear market, with its shift to low-labor-cost areas, has affected Western Europe the most, but even in China demand from this industry is growing at a slower pace. Global consumption of SBCs is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 3–4% during 2013–2018. In the developed regions, consumption will be driven by SBC use in the compounding and adhesives and sealants markets. In Asia (excluding Japan), polymers and asphalt modification, as well as compounding, will drive consumption, as consumption growth in footwear has slowed considerably. Central and Eastern Europe has become an interesting market, with overall demand forecast to grow at an

average annual rate of 8–9% (driven predominantly by paving in Russia) through 2018, even faster than in China. A basic understanding of block copolymers is crucial in the study of adhesive formulation. In particular, styrenic block copolymers (SBC) are a vital component in a wide range of hot melt adhesives. SBC's have a characteristic structure that makes them ideally suited for many adhesive applications. As the name implies, SBC's are made of blocks of distinct polymers that each contribute to the properties of the polymer. Figure 1 shows the typical structure of a linear SBC. The styrene end-blocks are hard polymers that add strength to a HMA, but do not contribute to the tack and adhesion properties. The mid-blocks are composed of rubbery polymers such as polyisoprene, polybutadiene, ethylene-butene copolymer and others. The mid-block combined with tackifiers and plasticizers produce the adhesive properties. SBC's are produced in several variations of this basic structure. A diblock copolymer can be visualized as half a tri-block molecule. These polymers can be mixed with tri-block polymers to increase tack at the expense of some cohesion. Radial and star block copolymers have several arms branching from a central attachment point each terminated with a styrene end-block. Block copolymers are useful because the end-blocks and midblocks are completely incompatible polymers. If one tried to mix, for example, polystyrene with polyisoprene, the result would be a useless compound that would separate like oil and water. In a block

CHEMICAL BUSINESS WEEKLY

CHEMICAL ARTICLE copolymer, however, these incompatible phases are chemically bonded together and cannot separate. The best they can do is to arrange themselves into domains on a microscopic level. In this tiny segregated world, styrene end-blocks clump together with other end-blocks as well as they can, while the rubbery mid-blocks tangle together like rubber bands connected to bowling balls. Since each molecule of a triblock polymer has styrene on each end, the styrenic domains “glue together” several molecules simultaneously as shown in Figure 2. This association of end-blocks makes the entire mass of molecules act as one crosslinked molecule with flexibility and adhesive properties contributed by the mid-blocks and a strengthening skeleton provided by the styrene. This explains the behavior of a block copolymer at ambient temperatures. The situation changes, however, at high temperatures. At about 100°C the styrene end-blocks melt and become liquid. When this happens the crosslinked structure of the material breaks down. As the temperature rises, the liquefied endblocks act as a plasticizer for the system and the viscosity drops rapidly. This explains SBC's value as components for hot melt adhesives. At low temperatures the styrene blocks reinforce the relatively low molecular weight mid-blocks. At high temperatures the styrene acts to soften and liquefy the system allowing it to be applied as a lowviscosity liquid. Furthermore, as the compound cools the styrene domains reform and the strength is regenerated each time the heat cycles. Block copolymers, therefore, are the perfect base for hot melt adhesives: they are strong, rubbery solids as ambient temperatures, but CHEMICAL BUSINESS WEEKLY

become viscous liquids at high temperatures and this change of state is reversible. The resins used to make SBCbased hot melt adhesives fall into two categories: end-block modifiers and mid-block modifiers. An end-block modifying resin is generally one with enough aromatic structure that it only associates with the styrenic end-block domains. If the resin has a softening point lower than styrene, it will cause the end-blocks to melt at a lower temperature reducing the melt viscosity and application temperature of the compound. If the resin has a softening point higher than styrene, it tends to reinforce the crosslink structure and provide higher temperature resistance to the HMA at the cost of higher application temperature and viscosity. Since these resins associate only with the endblock phase of the adhesive, they generally do not contribute to the tack and adhesion of the system. Mid-block modifying resins are tackifiers that associate only with the rubbery block and contribute to the tack and adhesion of the system. Since using a mid-block dilutes the styrenic portion of the polymer, they tend to decrease the crosslink density and cohesion of the system. It is also possible to formulate a tackifier with partial compatibility with both end- and midblocks. These materials are useful in balancing the properties of the system or have the necessary compatibility with some types of mid-block polymers. Aromatic/aliphatic C5/C9 resins, for example, are usually required for successful tackification of styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) block copolymers. The selection of a tackifier for a block copolymer depends on the composition of the mid-block. Styreneisoprene-styrene block copolymers are the most readily tackified and are most compatible with C5,

hydrogenated C5, and hydrogenated C9 tackifiers. SBS block copolymers are somewhat more difficult to tackify, are less stable than SIS, and require either C5/C9 hybrid or rosin ester tackifiers. SBS block copolymers are more readily available and cost less than SIS. Styreneethylene-butene-styrene (SEBS) block copolymers have fully saturated midblocks for the ultimate in stability and low color, but are the most difficult SBC's to tackify. SEBS block copolymers require fully hydrogenated C5 or C9 tackifiers to produce a useful adhesive. Kraton Performance Polymers today notified LCY Chemical (Taipei) that its board of directors intends to withdraw its recommendation that Kraton stockholders approve the previously announced merger with LCY's styrenic block copolymer (SBC) operations. The Kraton board cites down operating results for LCY's SBC business in the first quarter and the decline in its forecast results together with the related drop in Kraton's stock price and negative reactions from stockholders following the 24 June disclosure. Kraton announced on 24 June that the planned merger. GRACE TAPS FORMER UNIVAR EXECUTIVE TO LEAD CATALYSTS UNIT : W R Grace announced that it has appointed Albert F. EXPLORING NEW POTENTIAL OF ALGAE

C

hemists and biologists at the University of Konstanz have succeeded in transforming algae oil into high-quality chemical raw materials via socalled isomerizing alkoxycarbonylation. This provides the foundation for the use of algae as a basic chemical component for a broad spectrum of materials and products, beyond the use of algae as a substitute for crude oil. The results of the research have been published in the current edition of the scientific journal Angewandte Chemie. The research has rekindled the interest in probing the possibilities of using algae as a potential raw material in chemistry. Research efforts around the globe are looking into the use of algae as a substitute for crude oil and fuel, especially kerosene. The researchers have gone a step further and not only gain a replica of crude oil from algae, but also transform them into high-quality chemical constituents for use as chemical raw materials. In comparison with conventional vegetable oils, such as sun flower or rapeseed oil, algae oils have a significantly different structure which makes them attractive for the production of entirely different materials. As such algae are already regarded as a possible base raw material for future sustainable energy production. Algae do not occupy any agricultural space, and they can be grown very quickly and efficiently. As the Konstanz researchers have now shown, the full potential of algae -- in addition to their possible use as a crude oil substitute -- has definitely not been exhausted yet. They succeeded in transforming algae oil into functional chemical components in a catalytic process with a high level of selectivity. During this reaction a functional group from the centre of the molecule is transformed into an ester group at the end of the molecule. In the past, this conversion was often described as a dream reaction. The participating doctoral students have shown remarkable ingenuity by picking up the earlier idea on their own initiative and put it into practice. Further research into algae will be integrated especially in the studies of doctoral students at the Konstanz Research School Chemical Biology. Overturning two long-held misconceptions about oil production in algae, scientists at the US Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory show that ramping up the microbes' overall metabolism by feeding them more carbon increases oil production as the organisms continue to grow. The 16

findings -- published online in the journal Plant and Cell Physiology on May 28, 2012 -- may point to new ways to turn photosynthetic green algae into tiny "green factories" for producing raw materials for alternative fuels. Algae have become a important material for research because they grow very quickly and can efficiently convert carbon dioxide into carbon-chain molecules like starch and oils. With eight times the energy density of starch, algal oil in particular could be an ideal raw material for making biodiesel and other renewable fuels. But there have been some problems turning microscopic algae into oil producing factories. For one thing, when the tiny microbes take in carbon dioxide for photosynthesis, they preferentially convert the carbon into starch rather than oils. Generally, algae produce very little oil. Before the current research, the only way scientists knew to tip the balance in favor of oil production was to starve the algae of certain key nutrients, like nitrogen. Oil output would increase, but the algae would stop growing -- not ideal conditions for continuous production. Chemists at UC have predicted that vats of blue-green algae could one day replace oil wells in producing raw materials for the chemical industry. Synthetic biology is being used to create cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae, that convert carbon dioxide in the air into complex hydrocarbons, all powered by sunlight. Cyanobacteria are single-celled organisms that, like green plants, can use sunlight to turn carbon dioxide and water into sugars and other carbohydrates. The US Department of Energy has set a goal of obtaining a quarter of industrial chemicals from biological processes by 2025. Today, 99 percent of the raw materials used to make paint, plastics, fertilizers, pharmaceuticals and other chemical products come from petroleum or natural gas, according to Atsumi. While some chemicals, such as biofuels, can be obtained from converted plant material, plants are relatively slow to grow, and using farms to grow fuel takes arable land out of food production. Instead, Atsumi is engineering cyanobacteria to make chemicals they do not make in nature. By carefully analyzing genes in these and other organisms, his team will assemble artificial synthetic pathways and put them into living cells. Genes can be used as building blocks to create these new functions.
