Welcome to TEA’s bright future TEA president Christine Kerr, BaAM Productions I’ve always thought the TEA knew how to party, even before I attended my first Thea Awards Gala almost ten years ago. This annual gala is an opportunity for our industry to gather and celebrate the accomplishments of the past year. Each of the projects being recognized with a Thea award demonstrates what is possible when creative people from all over the world come together with a goal of creating amazing experiences. The influence of local cultures on these projects make them unique but also make them appealing and endearing to international audiences. This year’s recipients represent countries and cultures as diverse as Korea and Canada while including perennial favorites like Disney and Universal – reflecting the growth and increasing richness of the Experience Industry. Europa-Park, our Thea Classic recipient this year, embodies this idea so well. I visited the park in the fall of 1999, and its balance of charm and sophistication has stayed with me. Congratulations!
SCAD

Frank Stanek, our 2013 Buzz Price Thea Award recipient, for a lifetime of distinguished achievements, joins an impressive group of outstanding individuals who have done so much to help shape the vibrant international industry we enjoy today. Felicitations! Last but certainly not least, I ask you to join me in congratulating Judy Rubin, the second-ever recipient of the TEA Distinguished Service Award. Judy was nominated by many of her TEA colleagues, and her nomination was recommended by the Past Presidents Committee to the International Board, whose approval was unanimous! Congrats Judy! I am almost halfway through my first year-long term as President of The TEA International Board and I am pleased to report that this group has accomplished a great deal so far this year. We gathered for TEA’s annual planning meeting in Savannah – home of the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). We were joined by representatives from each of our regional boards – Western North America, Eastern North America and Europe and the Middle East. It is always inspiring to gather together with the volunteers that provide such great leadership to this association. We re-confirmed our commitment to the Association’s NextGen initiatives that will prepare our members and our industry for the future. Because we were meeting at SCAD, we were able to spend a day after our meetings with students, in particular those in SCAD’s Themed Entertainment Design Program. This unique opportunity to study and prepare for a career in our industry represents an important (and exciting) first step for the future of our industry. Another important outcome of the annual planning meetings was the creation of an Asian Division. We’re committing people, time and resources to this new Division to demonstrate our global commitment, reflect the truly international makeup of our membership and serve an important and fastgrowing new market sector. The TEA member companies that are already active in this region are the foundation of TEA’s new Asia Division. We hope many of you will join us for the official launch (and celebration) at IAAPA Asia in Singapore in June of this year.
This year’s Thea Awards are also the occasion of unveiling the new TEA logo – proudly displayed for the first time in this printed program and other materials. The Marketing and Communications committee led the development of this elegant new brand for the association, following on our 20th anniversary celebrations; it is a fitting start to our next 20 years. Watch for the roll-out of the new identity across all of our communication tools including a new website. An important milestone this year of TEA is the retirement of Gene Jeffers, our Executive Director for the past 12 years. The association leadership – past and present – has devoted itself to laying the groundwork for a smooth transition. We are truly grateful to Gene for all he has contributed to the association during his tenure. This was recognized at the 2012 Thea where Gene was awarded the first-ever TEA Distinguished Service Award. The success of an association like the TEA relies on the contribution of the significant time, resources and ideas made by every volunteer who sits on a board or a committee or who otherwise donates their time to make TEA successful. And behind these individuals is most often a company supporting and encouraging their efforts. The rewards are great – from a business development and networking point of view and because of the sense of accomplishment and the relationships developed through working with talented people who share a passion for our industry. In this spirit of gratitude, thank you to Patrick Roberge and his team at PRP, to Disney Parks and Resorts for their ongoing support of the TEA and the festivities of the Thea Awards Gala. Thanks also to all of our sponsors for their contributions to the success of TEA’s Weekend of Events, which includes the Gala and the 2-day TEA Summit that preceded it, along with some special NexGen activities for nurturing our industry’s promising future. Once again, congratulations to all the Thea Awards recipients. You inspire our TEA members who are creating compelling places and experiences around the world. Enjoy this celebration of your success with your TEA friends!

“Managing a theme park means writing a story, respecting a tradition and constantly questioning oneself, looking for new ideas and ways to improve every single detail of the guest experience.” ~Roland Mack
The Mack family quickly learns the tricks of the trade. Focused on maintaining and improving the quality of the guest experience, they recruit a German architect and designer with strong experience in theater, TV and movie productions, Ulrich Damrau (1914-2007). The collaboration is successful and in 1982, Europa-Park opens its first themed area, representing Italy. A Venetian-style plaza surrounded by buildings includes a theater, a mechanical puppet show, a pizzeria and two dark rides.
imagining and realizing the future development of the resort, in conjunction with the Mack manufacturing plant and the occasional external partner. Europa-Park’s most recent projects such as the Icelandic themed area and the Hotel Bell Rock, exemplify their work in the creation of compelling places and experiences. Today, Europa-Park is said to rank as the most popular regional theme park in the world with an annual attendance exceeding 4.5 million, a hotel occupancy rate of more than 90% and repeat visitation rate of 80%. The company now employs nearly 3,500 people in high season and has welcomed over 90 million visits since its beginnings. The recipe of Europa-Park’s growth has been based on the same basic ingredients since 1975: a daily attention to the quality of service, a genuine sense of hospitality, regular updating and re-investment in attractions and entertainment, a spirit of innovation, a desire to serve the public and an exacting management of the business. And then there is the singular, standout ingredient: the driving force of the Mack family. What differentiates Europa-Park and makes it unique comes from their passion and ambition.
This year’s Thea Classic Award honors Europa-Park, a laureate of the European theme parks industry, owing its success to the enthusiasm and energy of a family passionate about themed entertainment: the Mack family. From the manufacturing of wooden caravans in the late 18th century, to the operation of one of the world’s leading regional theme parks, the Mack family gradually built an international reputation.
Europa-Park has always been focused on the future while keeping a close eye on the foundations of the past. The members of a third generation of the Mack family business, Michael and Thomas Mack, represent the next phase. They will certainly make their mark on the Europa-Park resort of tomorrow. In facing the challenges that lie ahead, they will apply the Mack family’s signature creativity, business savvy, and passion!
The story of Europa-Park begins in the early 70s. Franz Mack (1921-2010) ably leads the family business which has grown to specialize in the design and production of rides and attractions: first for showmen and later for the amusement park industry at large.
François Mayné (francoismayne@newsparcs.com) comes from Belgium. He is the editorial director of NewsParcs, an online publication dedicated to theme park industry professionals.
Mack products are exported all over the world, and it is in the course of visiting customers and parks in the United States that the idea takes root in the minds of Franz Mack and his son Roland to create their own amusement
2013 THEA CLASSIC AWARD: EUROPA-PARK - Rust, germany
A family success story that’s all about passion! By François Mayné, NewsParcs park. The park would both entertain the public and serve as a showcase for Mack products. The challenge is formidable, but the desire of both men to succeed is strong. They will need a little more than three years to see the project emerge in the municipality of Rust, only a few kilometers from France. Europa-Park opens its doors on July 12, 1975, on a wooded, 16-hectare site. The first attractions include a track of small racing cars, a panoramic train, a kiddie car ride, a tow boat ride and a fairytale themed walk-through. Nearly 250,000 guests come to discover the park in its first year of operation; visitation attains 1 million by 1978. 8
This is a turning point for Europa-Park and the Mack family business – joined later by Roland’s brother Jürgen – and a series of new themed areas unfolds: Netherlands (1984), United Kingdom (1988), France (1989), Austria and Scandinavia (1992), Switzerland (1993), Spain (1994) and so on. If some areas are built around existing rides or facilities, others like Greece (2000) and Iceland (2009) are fully designed from a blank page. Adaptation and imagination are evident in the evolution of the park which is today divided into 16 themed areas within which 13 European countries are represented. Despite its name, Europa-Park was not originally conceived to become a symbol of diversity in European culture: its name was actually chosen for a completely different reason. But over the years and with the development of the European Union, it became a natural direction for the park. In 1995, the Mack family embarks on a new adventure. Europa-Park is becoming a short-stay destination with the opening of a hotel adjacent to the park. Again, great care is given to the theming and to the quality of experience – this time, to immerse the guests in the heart of Andalusia, Spain. The business model is a success and other projects follow, including the spectacular Hotel Colosseo, an architectural reference to the Colosseum of Rome. The site is now said to be the largest hotel resort in Germany, with five themed hotels (over 4,500 beds), a guest house and a Camp Resort. When Ulrich Damrau retires, the Mack family establishes its own creative department to continue the legacy and focus on ever-more detailed theming, from queuelines to shows, catering, shops, hotel rooms and even restrooms. About the Thea Awards Like the TEA, the Thea Awards, sponsored by Economics at AECOM, were created to bring recognition to achievement, talent and personal excellence within the themed entertainment industry. From a modest beginning in 1994, the Thea Awards have become internationally recognized as a symbol of excellence. The public is welcome to attend the black-tie 19th Annual Thea Awards Gala, which will be held April 6, 2013 at the Disneyland Hotel, Disneyland Resort, Anaheim Calif. USA. Tickets may be ordered online at teaconnect.org. The name of the award is a play on three words: the first is “Thea,” the Greek goddess from whom all light emanates. Thea was the mother of Helios (the sun), Eos (the dawn), and Selene (the moon). The second key word is “Theater,” a word derived from the goddess Thea. The third word, of course, is TEA, the name of our association.

In Ap p reciatio n Gene Jeffers - Executive Director Gene Jeffers, TEA Executive Director since 2001, will retire later this year. He came to the Association with a wealth of nonprofit experience, management skills and a calm demeanor – and all have served TEA well. Gene’s accomplishments include helping to found the TEA Summit and SATE (TEA’s two premier conferences); taming TEA’s finances while adding valuable member benefits and overseeing the creation of new publications (TEAConnect newsletter, TEA Annual & Directory, Thea Awards Program and TEA/AECOM Theme Index). Gene helped foster a culture and environment
conducive to networking and collaboration, both cornerstones of the TEA. Membership increased significantly during his tenure. TEA past president Peter Chernack says, “Gene’s calm focus and rocklike stability are near-legendary. He is modest in being praised, and quick to ascribe credit to others. He is measured when those around him appear agitated, patient when things don’t quite go according to plan and always optimistic about moving ahead… Even if it’s ‘inch-by-inch’ as he says now and again... Gene has proven himself to be a man for all seasons.”
Gene Jeffers was honored in 2012 with the TEA’s first Distinguished Service Award. We wish him all possible joy, good health and serenity in his well-earned retirement. 11
Frank Stanek grew up on the East Coast in Stamford, Connecticut, moving to Anaheim when he was 19. And it was a part time job at Disneyland for a food concessionaire that launched his Disney career, which ultimately led to his recognition as the premier global business development executive within the themed entertainment industry.
feasibility, project management, and business planning. He collaborated with Marty Sklar to integrate the Disney attractions from the World’s Fair into Disneyland. One show, GE’s Carousel of Progress, was the catalyst for the design and development of an entirely new Tomorrowland. Frank’s Imagineering responsibilities continued to expand, and he was thrust into leadership of the Walt Disney World Project Control Office. He and his team provided the project management and scheduling for all design, construction and manufacturing activities of this whole new “vacation kingdom” concept. He ensured the thousands of components for the successful opening of Walt Disney World were in place on the opening day Frank had recommended: October 1, 1971. During this period from 1965 to 1971, Frank was given the opportunity to be involved in every aspect of the development and operations of the “Disney theme show.” He embraced Walt Disney’s approach that

Following Walt Disney World’s successful launch, Frank continued to direct Imagineering’s research and planning. This encompassed a major capital expansion program of several hundred million dollars to meet the overwhelming public demand in Florida, adding thirteen major new attractions, a new hotel, a campground, restaurants and more. He also continued work on the Mineral King Ski Resort and its successor, Independence Lake. He planned development for Golden Oak Ranch, conducted in-depth research for Epcot Center, and directed the business analysis for international theme park expansion in Japan and Europe. His portfolio of business development experience resulted in Frank’s becoming the Executive Project Manager for both Epcot Center and Tokyo Disneyland. Eventually Frank volunteered to lead the overall developmental process for Tokyo Disneyland, recognizing at the beginning that Disney’s first international theme park project would be challenging as well as rewarding, if not difficult. As the project’s Vice President, he led Tokyo Disneyland’s creation along a complex and challenging path, from feasibility to concept development to negotiations with Disney’s partner, the Oriental Land Company, to the Park’s design, construction and successful opening. His leadership and strategic vision was the driving force in Tokyo Disneyland’s creation. Upon the opening of TDL, Frank was assigned the role of the Walt Disney Company’s first Corporate VP of Planning at the Burbank headquarters. He was a member of the Corporate Executive Committee, organizing and coordinating the Company’s future goals and objectives. He was actively involved in all strategic corporate issues and generated the organization’s first Annual Corporate Plan.
During Frank’s college years at California State University, Fullerton, he moved from the part time jobs with lessees to Disneyland’s Operations Group. Thus began his business planning and development path, becoming immersed in such analytical and developmental aspects as attendance projections, park utilization studies, design modifications,
Frank was given the responsibility to evaluate and recommend the location for a Disney European theme park, which led to the identification and
States. He developed a historic and unique agreement between Universal and the City of Osaka, with USJ serving as the anchor element in the redevelopment of Osaka’s western waterfront. Frank spearheaded the acquisition of Universal Mediterranea near Barcelona, Spain. He managed Universal’s expansion into China with the Universal Studio Experience Beijing, and directed the site selection and negotiations for Universal parks in Shanghai and Beijing. Universal Studios Shanghai was the first world-class U.S. theme park officially announced in China. Frank also established plans for Universal projects in Paris, Singapore and Malaysia. Frank Stanek is the best known business development executive in the themed entertainment industry. There is a very long list of some of the most prominent and accomplished executives and creatives in the business that Frank originally hired and mentored. He continues to play a vital role worldwide through his strategic consultancy, Stanek Global Advisors. Frank somehow has also managed to set aside time for his pursuits that he has a passion for: his Pinot Noir vineyard and his release of creative frustrations through the design and crafting of furniture. He finds the most satisfaction in mentoring younger people in the art of their craft as well as sharing his experiences and knowledge with his children and grandchildren. He and his wife, Irene, continue to explore the world and its cultures through Irene’s active travel planning efforts.
BUZZ PRICE THEA AWARD: RECOGNIZING A lifetime of distinguished Achievements
Frank P. Stanek, Stanek Global Advisors Industry leader and global business development visionary and a host of related strategic planning activities. He has always felt these early years at Disneyland provided him the best career foundation possible, embodied in four words that characterize his achievements: Dream….Believe….Dare….Do. During 1964 and ’65, the Disney Company designed, built and operated four major attractions at the New York World’s Fair: Carousel of Progress, It’s A Small World, Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln, and the Magic Skyway. Frank was dispatched to the Fair as Controller of the It’s A Small World Pavilion sponsored by Pepsi-Cola, which was operated by Disneyland’s Operations Division headed by Dick Nunis. It was during his second summer in New York that Frank was requested by Roy Disney to return to California and assume a role at the newly restructured WED (Walter Elias Disney) Enterprises -- today known as Walt Disney Imagineering.
12
Frank became responsible for Imagineering’s business planning function, encompassing all new Disney Projects, which, in 1965 included the Mineral King Ski Resort and Walt Disney World. He provided continuing input to the creative and design group, incorporating
“We keep moving forward – opening new doors and doing new things – because we’re curious, and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths. We’re always exploring and experimenting….we call it Imagineering – the blending of creative imagination and technical know-how.”

Walt Disney World was the largest private construction project in the world, and it used many innovative systems and construction methods, many for the first time anywhere. Frank orchestrated what was a giant jigsaw puzzle, as the pieces came together from all over the United States. Massive monorail beams came by rail from the state of Washington. Old-time steam locomotives were located in Mexico and refurbished in Tampa, Florida. From Imagineering and its fabrication arm, MAPO (for Mary Poppins) back in California came literally millions of individual pieces to be assembled into computer-controlled, super-sophisticated versions of Disneyland’s most popular shows and
recommendation of Marne La Vallee. After his initial discussions and negotiations with the French Government, it ultimately became the home of Disneyland Paris. He supported the transition of the Eisner and Wells regime into Disney, providing continuing strategic planning and a myriad of other corporate support functions. When Frank left Disney in 1987, he joined the world’s largest advertising agency, Dentsu, as an Executive Vice President based in Los Angeles. He advised their Japanese clients with development and expansion ideas. One prominent example is the City of Osaka and their Harbor Authority, where he advised in the business development, planning and design for the world renowned Osaka Aquarium or “Kaiyukan” with its Ring of Fire theme.
Frank’s leadership and innovation within the industry is illustrated by his wide array of board and association memberships. He served as a director on numerous Universal Studios joint venture boards. He was a director of the United States – Japan Bridging Foundation, a commissioner of the Japan U.S. Friendship Commission, and a director of CULCON, all of which operate under the auspices of the United States Department of State. Frank is a Governor of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) Foundation, an Honorary Member and former trustee of the ULI, and served on the Board of Advisors for the Hollywood Entertainment Museum. In addition, he is a Director of the Ryman-Carroll Foundation and was the founding Chairman of the Business First Board of California State University, Fullerton, where he was named one of the school’s outstanding alumni. And now, a recipient of the Buzz Price Recognizing a Lifetime of Distinguished Achievements.

During this time Universal Studios approached Frank to become the head of development for the construction of the Universal Orlando Resort in Florida. While he chose not to pursue this, he clearly let them know he would be interested when they were ready to take their theme park brand international. Frank joined Universal nine months later, and spent 17 years as the President of International Business Development. During his tenure Frank identified, negotiated and planned Universal Studios Japan in Osaka, Universal’s first studio theme park outside of the United

Judy Rubin has served as the TEA’s de facto Communications Director since 2005 when George Wiktor introduced her to Gene Jeffers and recommended that she work on the Association’s publications and communications. Today, Judy serves as a freelance staffer, handling the TEA’s signature publications such as the Annual Directory and Thea Awards Program as well as the Association’s social media presence, including TEA Facebook pages, the TEA LinkedIn group (with over 3,000 members), TEA Twitter accounts and the SATE & Summit blogs. card.) Among those in her growing network were Monty Lunde and his company, Technifex. Not long after Monty formed the TEA in 1991, Judy began writing articles about the fledgling Association. One of the reasons she liked TEA so much, Judy tells us, is that it led to formation of the high-tech area at IAAPA, which made it easy to find the companies she was interested in. In the mid 1990s Judy set out on her own as a freelancer. She contributed a monthly column to IAAPA’s Funworld, and wrote many articles for Atthe-Park and Film Journal International. She was the themed entertainment editor for Pat MacKay’s top-notch Entertainment Design magazine for several years. Eventually she teamed up with Marty Palicki, publisher of InPark Magazine, where she continues to work today as co-editor. She is also the go-to person for stories on the TEA and themed entertainment for other trade magazines such as Lighting & Sound America and Sound & Communications. (Which she says has taught her how underappreciated most designers are in the lighting, AV, acoustics, rigging and theater communities.)
opportunity to cross-promote and foster industry relationships from one trade group to another, as well as within them. Judy is originally from Detroit, Michigan and currently lives in Saint Louis, although she spent many years living on the east coast and then the west coast. Her creative background with art, music, writing and crafts seems to have uniquely suited her to what she does today, and reminds us that everybody used to do something else. She has a BFA from Pratt Institute in New York City, and spent a lot of time in those formative years making sketches of famous swing musicians at the West End jazz club. There, she says she learned the basics of PR writing from assisting manager Phil Schaap, who is now curator of Jazz at Lincoln Center. Judy is also an accomplished knitwear designer, and before joining World’s Fair, she was assistant editor of a knitting magazine. Today Judy applies her multitude of talents to knit together engaging stories of the creators of compelling places and experiences, and to foster the sharing of information and the building of relationships in our relationship-based industry. Judy’s work has helped to capture and document the art, science and imagination of our industry for a global community – and help to put our work into context so that it can be more fully appreciated by a wider audience. Our Association is enhanced by Judy’s many contributions and we are grateful for all that she does on our behalf. Congratulations on this well-deserved honor!

With Judy’s involvement, World’s Fair developed into one of the more unique and highly regarded trade magazines of its time. Judy never misses an IAAPA show. Her first was in 1990 where she organized a booth for World’s Fair. She went on to attend many more, and other trade events like ASTC and AAM, becoming well versed in the industry and what she likes to refer to as “the art of shmoozing.” (She’s known for having the word “shmoozing” on her business “Judy is the consummate journalistic pro - inquisitive, relentless, articulate and fair. A force in our industry and a valued colleague.” ~Nick Winslow “Winston Churchill wrote… ‘We make a living by what we do; we make a life by what we give.’ In essence he is speaking about Judith Rubin! We are a better organization because of Judith’s commitment, and passion for the people, our companies and the projects! Thank you! Thank you!” ~Roberta Perry, ETI
In addition to her editorial work, Judy is a publicist, and over the years has worked directly with many companies, including TEA members SimEx-Iwerks, Mad Systems, Entertainment Design Corp., Cinnabar, JRA, Thorburn Associates and FUNA, among others. Judy has also handled communications and publications for the Large Format Cinema Association, working with founder Chris Reyna for the group’s first five years. And in 2008, she became the Communications Director of IMERSA, a new association that is all about immersive cinema experiences. She says she likes to work with associations because “It’s exciting to work for a whole industry and everyone in it.” She tells us that one of the most enjoyable aspects is the
“Judy has been involved with the TEA, in one way or another, since the founding of the association in 1991. Without her efforts to get the word out about the Association and its members, it might never have grown beyond a small group of industry professionals based in Los Angeles and Orlando. Her dedication, commitment and passion for the TEA and our members is truly exemplary and epitomizes what that the TEA’s Distinguished Service award represents.” ~Monty Lunde - Technifex
“I remember way back when that gal Judith was just out of college and she came a-calling at my editorial door, “can I write an article for Theatre Crafts…?” ~Pat McKay, Ones&Zeros Media “I’ve known Judy almost as long as I’ve been in the ndustry and I can’t think of too many people who have brought as much passion, interest and dedication to the intellectual pursuit and sharing of the craft as Judy.” ~Craig R. Hanna, Thinkwell
“It’s exciting to work for a whole industry and everyone in it.”
~Judy Rubin
About TEA’s Distinguished Service Award The Distinguished Service Award is presented annually at the Thea Awards Gala, in recognition of a TEA member’s outstanding contributions “above & beyond the call of duty” to the Association. Nominations are open to the TEA membership; the final selection of the recipient is made by majority vote of the TEA Past Presidents Committee and approved by the TEA International Board of Directors.
“Over nearly three decades, Judy Rubin has been tirelessly advocating for the arts and sciences of themed entertainment, embracing the world in which all of us work. She has devoted thousands of hours - providing brains, integrity and sweat equity to promotion of the Thea Awards and supporting not just the TEA but our industry in general. It’s wonderful to see Judy Rubin receive some of the recognition that for years she has been conferring on others.” ~Bob Rogers, BRC Imagination Arts
“Judy’s friendship is a joy and her talent a continuing education for me. Her themed entertainment articles are always descriptive, relevant and informative. From her work at ‘World’s Fair’ to the present, her passion and insights keep me updated on the latest developments, trends and people that are shaping the future of our industry.” ~George Wiktor, GW Group

TAIT PIXEL TABLETS Thea Awa rd f or O ut sta n d i n g A c h i e ve m e n t BRE AK THROUGH T e c h n o lo g y OFFICIAL PROJECT CREDITS
A simple graphic display system, The Card Trick, has been in use over countless decades virtually unchanged. In popular use at large, mostly outdoor events, such as football and soccer games, the card trick typically uses a series of handheld, graphically printed cardboard panels, which when correctly displayed, create a large billboard-like sign. The essence of these card tricks is that multiple changing sign displays are created when event guests hold them in a certain order in response to commands.
It has not always been possible to have every card trick appear exactly as intended by the graphic designer due to variables of human activity. And until the creation of the Tait Pixel Tablet, no improvements had occurred in the long life of the basic card trick system. But now, a technical giant step has made it possible to create this type of event display in a precisely programmed method reflecting the designer’s intent. These new displays are lit so as to be more visible in darkened venues compared to the cardboard panels that rely on ambient light for visibility.

AULANI, A Disney resort & Spa Thea Awa rd f or O ut sta n d i n g A c h i e ve m e n t THEMED HOTEL RESORT OFFICIAL PROJECT CREDITS
Ko Olina, Oahu, Hawai’i Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, is a unique resort destination that celebrates Hawaiian culture, history and traditions. From the State’s largest collection of contemporary Hawaiian art to the 7-acre Waikolohe Valley water recreation facility, to the 5,200 square foot Aunty’s Beach House Kids Club, Aulani is an exceptionally cohesive, immersive and entertaining resort experience. Interlaced throughout the entire resort are many layers and references to native Hawaiian culture, both traditional and contemporary, including murals and music commissioned for the resort that successfully unites families in a shared experience of pure Hawaii. Mickey himself is seen on site as only another of many tourists enjoying the educational and entertaining offerings at Aulani. Some of the many entertaining features of Aulani include: Aunty’s Beach House, a kids club unlike any other in which local Hawaiian culture and activities share equal billing with Disney characters; Waikolohe Valley, a 7-acre water utopia featuring a lazy river, snorkeling lagoon, Menehunethemed play structure, and a variety of pools, waterfalls, and waterslides; The Menehune Adventure Trail, an interactive adventure game where kids 20
can experience first-hand the mischievousness of the mythical Menehune; native Hawaiian craftsmaking and storytelling; and Disney character breakfasts at Makahiki restaurant. The Aulani represents a major departure from traditional Disney resorts in that, rather than providing lodging in support of a theme park, the resort itself is the destination. Imagineers collaborated closely with local and native Hawaiian cultural consultants and experts to create an experience that is truly reflective of real Hawaiian culture… not just traditional and historical, but contemporary, as well. The native Hawaiian aspect of the experience is presented in countless layers, enabling guests to indulge in as little, or as much, of native Hawaiian culture, traditions and entertainment as they like. With only few exceptions for activities centered around young children, Disney stories and characters are noticeably absent. However, in many ways - attention to detail, storytelling, guest service - Aulani is truly Disney. The Aulani resort experience is one-of-a-kind.

CARS LAND Thea Awa rd f or O ut sta n d i n g A c h i e ve m e n t NEW THEME PA R K L A ND
Disney California Adventure Theme Park Guests visiting Cars Land often remark that, “It looks like they took the plans for the Disney∙Pixar movie and just pushed ‘Print!’” Cars Land is indeed a startlingly accurate realization of the town of Radiator Springs and surrounding Ornament Valley, but the reality is not nearly that simple. Walking down the main drag of Radiator Springs, all of the storefronts and businesses which appeared in the Cars films have been brought to life in careful and delightful detail. From Flo’s V8 Café, Fillmore’s Taste-In and the Cozy Cone Motel to Sarge’s Surplus Hut, Radiator Springs Curios and Ramone’s House of Body Art, each has been created as its own distinct experience, drawn from the films and further inspired by the lore and legend of Route 66. In addition to the big “E-Ticket” ride, Radiator Springs Racers, two other attractions, Luigi’s Flying Tires and, in particular, Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree are cleverly conceived reinventions of classic rides, each with a new twist. Cars Land’s 12 acres are particularly notable for the overwhelming scale of the rockwork panorama that frames the land, providing spectacular vistas and a sense of scale and perspective that make the significantly large footprint of the development even larger, seeming to extend for 26
miles. At night, spectacular lighting takes the entire land to a new level of immersion as the colorful neon lights of downtown Radiator Springs come to life against the glowing palate of the Ornament Valley landscape beyond. The sensitive layout, sophisticated use of scale, extension of character details and the high quality of execution combine to make this an outstanding example of experiential design. Far beyond being a supporting element of the Radiator Springs Racers attraction, Cars Land is a destination attraction in and of itself. Retail, food and beverage programming begins with inspiration from the films, but Imagineers have added humor, story and surprise extra touches throughout. Every element has been thoughtfully considered to maximize its character and story content, while simultaneously providing optimal (but often invisible) operational function and capacity. Disney California Adventure Theme Park In one of the largest attractions ever built for a Disney theme park, the Radiator Springs Racers ride at Disney California Adventure Park puts visitors in the driver’s seat for a thrilling race through the world of the Disney∙Pixar film Cars. This family-oriented, indoor/outdoor thrill ride incorporates fast moving, variable-speed, six-passenger vehicles that start their journey with a calm and scenic drive through the colorful landscape of Ornament Valley. Traveling into an interior dark ride environment, guests find themselves face-to-face with Lightning McQueen, Tow Mater and all the other 4-wheeled personalities of Radiator Springs, personified via breakthrough figures that combine physical and projected animation to bring the characters to life. Variable track paths allow for changing and unpredictable scene experiences during the indoor portion of the ride. The ride culminates in a high speed, side-by-side, outdoor race between two ride vehicles that careen neck-and-neck through the twisting Ornament Valley landscape. The winner isn’t decided until the cars reach the Finish Line at the end of the race!

This attraction demonstrates true excellence in design, technical innovation and in execution. In bringing a well-known movie to life, the designers went the extra step in expanding it into a fully experiential world, creating new details and gags throughout. The animated figures break new ground in creating the illusion of live animation, and the technical elements, including special effects, sophisticated, in-vehicle sound, and a sophisticated ride system, have all been transparently integrated into the highly enjoyable story and experience. In addition, the design team incorporated an extremely large attraction footprint into the plan of the overall Cars Land footprint in a way that creates multiple notable scenic vistas, and overlooks and seamlessly intertwines the environment and attraction into a total experience greater than the sum of its parts.

The highway from dream to reality is one amazing journey. Along the way, we came up with breakthrough techniques, introduced innovative materials, and created all-new technologies to bring a cast of roadworthy characters to life. It was quite a drive to Radiator Springs!
We’re proud to have been along for the ride. Thank you to our partners at Walt Disney Imagineering for the opportunity to design and build twelve of the incredible animatronic figures for Radiator Springs Racers.

Yeosu 2012 International Expo, Korea The Big-O is the latest breathtaking multimedia installation to fuse a breakthrough concept and cutting-edge technology with show creation, whilst leaving an iconic structure that, after closing day, permanently towers over the 2012 Yeosu World Expo site. Technical design features include: •Water systems (24 moving, 360-degree water cannons rotate create haunting, createing sacred geometric patterns and shapes, while at 45-meters high, the biggest and tallest water curtain in the world boasts hundreds of sea water jets). •Special effects (24 flame generators; hundreds of mist nozzles; 5 lasers) •Lighting and images (58 moving lights, 1500 watts each in weatherproof casing; 6 video projectors of 35,000 lumens) This project, the result of Yeosu Expo 2012’s challenge to create a unique event with a new approach to technology that would remain as an icon and a legacy, has added a new dimension to the genre of the multimedia water spectacular.

The Big-O show had an impressive attendance throughout the run of the Expo of over 100,000 people weekly, from all walks of life and age group demographics. It transports the audience through an innovative and breathtaking visual journey. With its sea water curtain, the largest ever realized in a multimedia show, its “O” structure truss system has introduced vertical waterscreen orientation and thus a whole new range of fountain and screen image possibilities. A testament to its success is that although originally intended to be a temporary structure that would not outlast the 3-month run of Yeosu Expo 2012, it will instead remain as a permanent attraction, symbolic landmark and nighttime show.

Calgary, Canada Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame is a new, dynamic, 40,000 square-foot facility that celebrates Canada’s sport heroes and legends at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary, Alberta. It stands as an example of excellence in exhibition design, rich storytelling, media production and interactive technology. The Hall offers unique multi-sensory experiences that immerse visitors in Canada’s sport story. Eleven themed galleries (Blade, Glide, Contact, Hockey, Media, Olympic and Paralympic Games, Locker Room, Bounce, Motion, Ride and Splash) and the Changing Gallery showcase the achievements of athletes through compelling media and displays. With 529 inducted athletes and sport builders, representing 60 sports, the design transforms seamlessly from contemporary artifact displays juxtaposed to sensational large-scale media of athletes in action; crisp unified graphic treatments; life-like casts of Honoured Members; and over 50 unique immersive sport challenges. The exhibits beckon visitors to engage in the triumphant story of Canada’s sport history from the moment they enter the museum. A multi-screen video ring suspended from the ceiling in the Grand Hall offers emotionally 36
charged imagery of both athletic triumphs and challenges. The scale of grand media projections throughout the museum combined with smaller contemplative informational kiosks on all the inductees is very inviting and inspiring. For guests, the most compelling feature is the ability to go head-to-head with famous Honoured Members and sport celebrities through state-ofthe-art virtual interactive game technologies. These exhibits provide rare opportunities for visitors to shadow-box with Lennox Lewis; interact one-onone with Kerrin Lee- Gartner as she coaches them through a virtual downhill race; sit in a racing wheelchair and race against Chantal Petitclerc; and join a Formula 1 race with Jacques Villeneuve. Two of the museum’s immersive 3D exhibits, “Be a Goalie” and “Be a Catcher,” offer visitors a unique opportunity to put on a mask and block shots from the Calgary Flames or experience the physical impact of various pitches striking a catcher’s mitt. Throughout Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame, “Ask the Athlete” interactive experiences allow visitors to learn the science behind a sport, and test their knowledge and skill against the clock or
virtual opponents. In every case, the interactive sport experiences presented at the Hall are A+ in their poignant delivery, messaging and audience feedback. Virtually every storytelling device is used in this massive, multi-level experience, and the experience never becomes repetitive or timeline derivative. Visitors are immersed in a complete Canadian sport experience. Stunning environments combined with unified graphic treatments, spectacular photography, life-size cast sports statues, custom–programmed interactives, multi- media delivery systems, and one-of-a-kind artifacts make this a must-see for all Canadians and sport enthusiasts.

Carthay Circle Restaurant and Lounge Thea Awa rd f or O ut sta n d i n g A c h i e ve m e n t THEME PA R K RESTA UR A NT
Disney California Adventure Park The Carthay Circle Restaurant resides within a reproduction of the famous Carthay Circle Theatre, renowned in Disney history for having been the venue for the premiere of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937. The Restaurant and Lounge are keystones in the storytelling of Buena Vista Street, a newly added area to the park. (Buena Vista Street is a new retail and entertainment entry to California Adventure and showcases Los Angeles as it may have looked to Walt upon his arrival in 1923). This opulent dining experience would be transportive in any locale - its interior representing the refined and retro stylings of the Golden Age of Hollywood, complete with beautiful historic photographs and archival memorabilia. But this restaurant is in a theme park. From the lounge on the ground floor that serves vintage cocktails to the restaurant lobby and the dining rooms upstairs, the striking period décor is befitting of such a theatrical setting. The reservations-recommended restaurant offers seating on the second floor in an intimate main dining room, exclusive, themed, single-table dining alcoves, private dining rooms, and two sunny open-air terraces. 40
The food is also exemplary for a theme park setting. Awardwinning chef Andrew Sutton (from Napa Rose Restaurant at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa) created the menu to feature the bold and diverse flavors of Southern California. The high quality service, distinctive setting and cuisine in an exclusive-feeling environment make Carthay Circle Restaurant a truly outstanding achievement in a theme park.

AQUANURA Thea Awa rd f or O ut sta n d i n g A c h i e ve m e n t EVENT SPECTA CUL A R OFFICIAL PROJECT CREDITS
Efteling, Netherlands Aquanura treats guests of Efteling to a beautiful and spectacular water-andlight extravaganza on the large lake between the park’s main entrance and its Fata Morgana ride. With Aquanura, Efteling expands on its fairytale and storytelling traditions that have been part of the park’s thematic foundation for some 60 years. Four giant frogs, based on a historic fountain feature (the Frog Prince) in the park’s Fairytale Forest, mark the corners of the lake. The Frogs serenely open the show as they shoot jumping water sprays to the center of the performing area. At this point, larger fountains begin to take over. Aquanura celebrates Efteling’s rich mix of attractions, visualizing them during the show through water, light and fire, all performed against a beautifully orchestrated score. Specially arranged versions of the attractions’ musical themes tell a story uniquely “Efteling.”
44
Aquanura excels through its emotional content and storytelling that are linked to the guest’s nostalgic experience of Efteling’s other rides and shows over the years. Efteling has achieved with Aquanura an adaption of available technology put to use in ways that are uniquely evocative. Artistry and beauty prevail over spectacle. The often serene pace of the show conjures the feeling of watching a water ballet. This approach fits the park remarkably well, and, combined with excellent execution, furthers the tradition of bringing stories to life in ways both unique and engaging.

TRANSFORMERS: The Ride - 3d TRANSFORMERS the Ride: The Ultimate 3D Battle Thea Awa rd f or O ut sta n d i n g A c h i e ve m e n t ATTRA CT I ON
OFFICIAL PROJECT CREDITS
Universal Studios Hollywood Universal Studios Singapore Based on the popular movie franchise, Transformers: The Ride - 3D is an immersive, next-generation thrill ride that blurs the line between fiction and reality, and puts guests in the middle of the ultimate war zone. Fusing HD 3D media, elaborate flight simulation technology and cutting edge special effects, this epic ride immerses guests into the action-packed world of Transformers as they fight alongside Optimus. Together, they protect the AllSpark from Decepticons that stand over four stories tall. Guests enter the attraction via a Non-biological Extraterrestrial Species Treaty (NEST) base. Ride vehicles are modeled after an Autobot named Evac. Once on the ride, guests are propelled along 2,000 feet of ride track and surrounded by 14 gigantic screens, some as tall as 60 feet high.
46
Each ride vehicle has on-board audio and is capable of moving 360 degrees, at various angles, utilizing a yaw function and a 6-DOF motion base. The vehicles move in perfect unison with the HD 3D imagery and show action equipment within each scene. The seamless combination of show systems pushes the boundaries of 3D realism to a higher level than that achieved by any other attraction (including Spider-Man) within the themed entertainment industry. The scale and quality of the HD 3D imagery, sophisticated ride vehicle programming, blended with “4D special effects and real scenic elements, all serve to completely immerse guests within each dramatic scene. This attraction truly transports guests into the world of Transformers.

WARNER BROS. STUDIO TOUR LONDON THE MAKING OF HARRY POTTER Thea Awa rd f or O ut sta n d i n g A c h i e ve m e n t STUDIO TOUR
OFFICIAL PROJECT CREDITS
London, England The Harry Potter film series has brought J.K. Rowling’s books to the screen and captivated fans from all over the world for more than a decade. The Making of Harry Potter Studio Tour London celebrates the craftsmanship that went into the film productions in an extraordinary way. A new building was constructed on the Warner Bros. Studio lot in Leavesden, where visitors can experience the fascinating process used to convincingly create the extraordinary characters, worlds and events of the books. The tour starts off in a theater setting and after a brief introduction by the film’s young stars, the visitors are invited to explore the exhibition consisting of beautifully staged actual artifacts, models and set pieces. These are interpreted by interactive displays that give a broad perspective of the efforts that went into the productions. Eye candy provided by the actual flying brooms used to levitate Harry and Mad Eye Moody is viewed against a brilliantly lit green backing. This arresting set-up draws the audience into a demonstration of the special effects created with this process. Rooms wallpapered with a myriad of drafted design details

provide a reflection of the minutiae necessary in creating a fantasy world and serve as a gateway to the final exhibit. Here the importance of detail is driven home by a breathtaking model of Hogwarts Castle, a veteran of all 8 films. Everything that is done with the Harry Potter brand faces high expectations from fans all over the world. The Making of Harry Potter Studio Tour London has managed to more than fulfill those expectations. In contrast to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal’s Island of Adventure, where visitors are immersed into fantasy environments, the Studio Tour London focuses specifically on the “making of” part of the Harry Potter films. The presentation varies from simple information to very detailed settings used in the films, and never loses sight of the filmmaking process. Because of how deeply generations of fans have bonded with the Harry Potter stories and films, highly complicated aspects of filmmaking are readily communicated and absorbed by eager audiences.

DESIGN NOTES: THEA AWARDS PROGRAM & NEW TEA LOGO Many, many thanks to Canyon Creative for again providing superlative design assistance to TEA this year. TEA is very fortunate to have this very accomplished branding and design specialist on board to help the association represent itself in a consistent and professional manner. The 2013 Thea Awards Program design scheme was created by David Adler, senior art director at Canyon Creative, and we think it beautifully evokes the “Pure Imagination” theme of this year’s awards.

By far, our FAVORITE Judy
Congratulations to Judith Rubin —one of the hardest working people in the TEA— from your friends at Visual Terrain.
Congratulations to Judy Rubin!
TEA’s new logo appears for the first time in the 2013 Thea Awards Program. The logo was designed by Dale Sprague, president and creative director of Canyon Creative, and chair of TEA’s Marketing & Branding Committee. The logo can be seen as a stylized compass - a reference to the association’s very first logo, and to TEA’s growing worldwide presence and international diversity. The color system is also a reference to the diversity within TEA – of creativity, professional disciplines, geography and markets. Thanks also to Joe Fox for his page layout and production work on this Thea Awards Program. He brought to the job just the right combination of skills, aesthetics, enthusiasm and efficiency, and did an excellent job of fulfilling the design vision for the book. As a TEA NextGen member, Joe is working to grow a new career in themed entertainment and we think he will do very well. 55
