An industry of smiles and a time of growth TEA International President Steve Birket, Birket Engineering Overture. Hit the Lights. Welcome, everyone, to the 22nd annual Thea Awards, where we celebrate the best of the best for our Themed Entertainment industry. How lucky we are to be in an industry where we get to write the story and build the imagined, and the end products are smiles. The Thea Awards bring us together to see what happens when passionate people create amazing experiences. Happy, inspired, comic, artistic, innovative, or arresting, it is here. The Thea Awards were created in 1994 to recognize achievement, talent, and excellence within the industry. In the 22 years since, Thea Awards have become an internationally recognized standard and a coveted honor. This year TEA is very pleased to have Chimelong Group as the Gala presenting sponsor. Chimelong brings a unique vision to projects and sets the example of international collaboration. Thank you, Chimelong, for your contributions of teamwork and quality to the industry. Asia is rapidly becoming a leader in themed entertainment development, and TEA is honored to help drive the dialog between West and East, in the interest of creativity, quality and growth for our industry. Here’s where I switch from a theatre metaphor to a ride metaphor, because both are elemental to themed entertainment: For 2016 in our industry we have buckled up for an “E-ticket” ride (a reference to rides that ranked highest within Disney’s former ticketing system). We are at a new height and are at top speed. I invite you to choose your metric to measure the excitement. The industry measures it in new market growth and mature market reinvestment. Operators measure it in increased attendance. Within TEA we measure it in increased international membership, more event and programming offerings, and greater Board enthusiasm. Across my desk I see it in the waterfall of RFPs, inquiries, and resumes. At the Thea Awards, the ride includes awards. Thea Classic Award recipient, The San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park, celebrates 100 years of inspiration and wildlife conservation. Awards for Outstanding Achievement are recognized for attractions, technology, and innovation. As you see in the pages of this book, the 2016 selection is remarkable and rich. Please join me in congratulating this year’s recipient of the Buzz Price Thea Award for a Lifetime of Distinguished Achievements - Keith James of Jack Rouse Associates. Keith is one of our industry’s most respected and trusted leaders. He is a past President of TEA and continues to be actively involved with our organization – donating his own time and expertise and 6
allowing his employees to participate as well. Thank you, Keith, for your leadership and ongoing contributions to the TEA. Congratulations are also due to AECOM Sr. Vice President John Robinett on his TEA Distinguished Service Award. Every year, we partner with John and his team on the TEA/AECOM Theme Index. This honor for John reminds us that the very first Thea Award was presented to Harrison “Buzz” Price, the pioneer of entertainment feasibility in our industry. TEA recognizes that business and creativity go hand in hand in the making of great guest experiences. Thank you, Phil Hettema and The Hettema Group for once again producing tonight’s show. Your talent, effort, resources, high standards and commitment to our Association shine in this top-quality Gala presentation - and are greatly appreciated. For the amazing TEA International and Division Boards, Committees, membership, and sponsors that fuel the 70+ international events that were held last year and TEA’s ongoing initiatives, I have the greatest respect. Thank you COO Jennie Nevin, Gala Event Producer Tammie Richards, and the TEA staff for the work to create this event and move the TEA machine. Thank you TEA for having me as your President for a second term. It is my great pleasure and honor. Keep your hands and feet inside the vehicle and hang on everyone, here we go!

Special thanks to Chimelong Group and our other Gala partners
As the industry expands and improves in Asia and especially China, as the TEA Asia Pacific Division grows and extends its influence in the region, as TEA members extend their business and craft to serve Asia, Chimelong’s contributions will help maintain high standards of quality and innovation and help to continue the culture of teamwork, recognition, and shared wisdom.
From the submission of nominations to the selection and naming of recipients, to formal presentation at the Thea Awards Gala, the annual Thea Awards cycle is a major production that relies on the dedicated and diligent efforts of many, including the Thea Awards Committee, the TEA International Board and TEA staff, plus additional critical support from sponsors, corporate sponsors, partners, the Gala Producer and the Gala Presenter. Crucial support for the 2016 TEA Thea Awards came from three outstanding sources: • Chimelong Group: Presenting sponsor of the Thea Awards Gala • Phil Hettema and The Hettema Group: Producer of the Thea Awards Gala • AECOM: Theme Index Partner
PHIL HETTEMA AND THE HETTEMA GROUP THEA AWARDS GALA PRODUCER TEA extends a very warm welcome to Phil Hettema and The Hettema Group as Producer of the 22nd annual Thea Awards Gala. This will be the second consecutive year that THG has lent vision, talent and experience to make the Thea Awards Gala a superlative event. Phil Hettema is a respected creative leader in themed entertainment with many accolades for himself and his company’s projects, including several Thea Award honored projects such as Beyond All Boundaries at the National WWII Museum and One World Observatory (named for a Thea this year).
CHIMELONG GROUP THEA AWARDS GALA PRESENTER The support of Chimelong Group is a symbol of the international collaboration that will continue to characterize the themed entertainment industry as it grows globally. When Chimelong Ocean Kingdom (Zhuhai, China) was named to receive a Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement – Theme Park a year ago, the Thea Awards Committee wrote, “Since entering the theme park business in 1997, Chimelong Group has increased the scale and polish of its offerings at a dramatic pace. Chimelong Ocean Kingdom is the fifth theme park to open under the Chimelong group, and their first outside their Guangzhou home base. Each park has been significantly more polished than the one before.” Chimelong Group has been called a game changer, bringing a unique vision to projects but also recognizing and drawing upon the expertise and experience of the global theme park industry, setting an example of international collaboration and bringing something new to the industry.

AECOM THEME INDEX PARTNER AECOM is supporting the 22nd annual Thea Awards Gala as Theme Index Partner, marking the company’s continued collaboration with TEA on the annual TEA/AECOM Theme Index and Museum Index. The TEA/AECOM Theme Index, published mid-year, is the definitive global study of attendance at the world’s top theme parks, water parks and museums. It is provided free as a resource for the industry, published online by TEA and AECOM and also distributed in print, and in a Chinese language edition. The relationship between AECOM and TEA is long standing and the company plays an important role as a presenter and facilitator for TEA conferences and TEA panels at outside events.

San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park SAN DIEGO, CA, USA
Thea Classic Award To honor an exemplary and influential project that has stood the test of time (25+ years) TEA created the Thea Classic Award. Past recipients include Madame Tussauds London, “it’s a small world” (Disneyland), the Studio Tour (Universal Studios Hollywood), Efteling Park, the Exploratorium (San Francisco) and Tivoli Gardens.
Shortly following the close of the 1915 Panama-California Exposition in San Diego’s Balboa Park, and upon hearing the roar of the lions that had been abandoned in the Park after the Expo, Dr. Harry M. Wegeforth founded the Zoological Society of San Diego, and started the San Diego Zoo a century ago, in 1916. What began in a moment of inspiration has resulted in a century of amazing animals and extraordinary people coming together to pursue a dedicated vision. The 100-acre San Diego Zoo is primarily a cageless facility for more than 3,700 rare and endangered animals and a renowned botanical collection. Annual attendance: 3.75 million. Sister facility San Diego Zoo Safari Park opened May 10, 1972 and receives some 2 million annual visits. Its 1,800 acres are home to more than 2,600 animals and 1.5 million botanical specimens.
16
Consistently, both have been on the forefront of innovations in contemporary zoo keeping and most active in conservation and preservation efforts. San Diego Zoo Global is a non-profit organization dedicated to saving species from extinction. Over the last century conservationists with San Diego Zoo Global have worked to preserve and reintroduce more than 30 endangered species to managed habitats in their natural habitat. Looking towards the next 100 years, the well-known conservation organization is looking to new technologies and community supported efforts to turn the tide of extinction and create a world zoo where all species are protected in their native habitats as they are in accredited zoos. In July 2015, TripAdvisor.com Travelers’ Choice Awards recognized The San Diego Zoo as the best in the US and best in the world.

SAN DIEGO ZOO AND SAN DIEGO ZOO SAFARI - OFFICIAL PROJECT CREDITS Dr. Harry M. Wegeforth, Founder and Board Director Mrs. Belle Benchley, Zoo Director Dr. Charles Schroeder, Director Mr. Charles Bieler, Director Mr. Douglas G. Myers, President and CEO A CENTURY’S WORTH OF CREDIT San Diego Zoo Global expresses thanks to everyone who contributed to the creation, improvement and growth of San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park over 100 years. During that time, literally thousands of people and companies have worked on projects at these two facilities. In view of the impossibility of crediting them all, it was decided to simply list the five CEOs who have led the organization over the 100 years. Douglas G. Myers, the current President and CEO has been there 30 years.

Rory Meyers Children’s Adventure Garden, Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden DALLAS, TX, USA
Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement Science / Discover y Garden This imaginative and interactive garden for children is a museum without walls, designed specifically to address state and national education standards in life, earth and environmental sciences. Each of its 17 galleries or “learning rooms” has a specific theme, to teach and demonstrate science concepts. Themes include Science and Natural Phenomena, Botany and Agriculture, Nature and the Biosphere, Astronomy and Space, and Energy. Spanning eight acres, with more than 150 interactive exhibits covering a wide spectrum of science, play and imagination, the sheer scale of the project sets it apart. Storytelling and engagement are highlighted throughout, both through the design of the exhibits and through interaction with live docents and staff. In addition, physical activities like mazes, climbing structures and observation towers and decks are found throughout the site. Throughout, there is a sense of play, whimsy and discovery, with all exhibits directly targeting specific demographic age groups and learning levels.
20
From an adult designer’s point of view, this is an extremely sophisticated and well thought out master plan, offering multiple levels of play, and beautifully designed and fabricated exhibits with a built in sense of discovery and surprise - seamlessly integrated into an elegant park environment with a wide variety of moods, textures, and vistas. From a child’s point of view, it’s a simply irresistible banquet of exciting play and discovery, with exciting surprises around every corner.

Inspector Training Course, Discovery Cube LOS ANGELES, CA, USA
Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement Science / Discover y Experience, Limited Budget One of the flagship exhibits at Discovery Cube Los Angeles, Inspector Training Course gives visitors a new understanding of safety and environmental protection in the home. The exhibit takes the form of a charming California Craftsman Bungalow, with interactive elements and activities woven throughout the bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom and back yard. Visitors become “home inspectors”; each person receives a special digital tablet that senses their precise location in the home and offers up a personalized series of challenges and puzzles. The activities are a mix of digital questions, physical and visual tests, and integrated media in the space. If they solve enough challenges correctly, they achieve “Super Inspector” status: the tablet takes their photo and displays it on a “champions” video wall in front of the exhibit. The Inspector Training Course hides a whole lot of learning behind a whole lot of fun. This high-tech scavenger hunt teaches kids about conservation, sustainability and environmental stewardship, furthering the museum’s overall STEM education goals. The experience seamlessly integrates the physical space and objects with the individual tablet experience. The recipe? Make it tactile, real and fun. Make it a game, and allow for experimentation and social interaction. Use high-tech tools, and then make those tools disappear. 24
The tablet is part teacher, part scorekeeper and part guide. The tracking technology allows the game engine to know the exact location of each player within 12-inches, and uses the information to guide visitors through the exhibit and provide location-specific content and challenges.

Integrated Environmental Media System, LAX LOS ANGELES, CA, USA
Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement Environmental Media Experience The Integrated Environmental Media System (IEMS) in the new international terminal at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is an unprecedented passenger experience and a new source of nonaeronautical revenues for the facility. The IEMS includes seven media features, including Welcome and Bon Voyage Walls, a four-sided Time Tower and portals that shepherd passengers to their departure gates. The IEMS is supported by an intelligent show control system that enables mapping content onto unique, very large-scale, multidimensional media surfaces. Arriving and departing passengers are mesmerized by the beautiful content floating throughout this massive canvas. The content captures the culture of Los Angeles and, depending on the destinations of upcoming departures, will periodically change to reflect those destinations. Since its opening, the project has received global attention as the most provocative example of a fully integrated, intelligent media
26
environment. It’s a space where immersive media and ambient storytelling don’t demand attention – but do reward it. It’s the perfect “hello” and “goodbye” to travelers from all over the world and that’s why this project was recommended for a Thea Award. The base concept is now under design development - and may in fact already be under construction - in other airports, museums and themed attractions around the world. The base idea is not new, but the Integrated Environment Media System at LAX has been executed with such creative and technical excellence that it has redefined the field, and is fast becoming a widely-admired and replicated achievement. It has also improved the airport visitor experience: Studies show that travelers tend to arrive early at the terminal to enjoy the media.

Manufacturing Innovation, Ford Rouge Factory Tour, The Henry Ford DEARBORN, MI, USA
Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement Brand Experience, Limited Budget Manufacturing Innovation is a multimedia experience located at the Ford Rouge Factory Tour in The Henry Ford. This 10-minute show combines multiple screens with projection mapping and factory automation robots to create an impressive and dimensional story that follows the creation of an F150 truck from initial design through manufacturing and on to testing and finally customer delivery. The show utilizes seven screens that wrap around the audience with a lift at the front of the theater to surprise guests with a white form F150 truck that rises up and is subsequently “built,” “welded” and “painted” by combining mapped projections in synchronization with industrial robot arms that appear to be affecting the white form of the truck. It is a clever and excellent way to use the mapped projection technique in a brand experience story of manufacturing. The exceptional combination of custom produced media synchronized and choreographed across seven screens with the technique of mapped projection integrated with industrial robots turns a corporate
30
media presentation into a multimedia spectacular that leaves guests excited about manufacturing innovation. With great music, theatrical lighting, carefully choreographed projection and robotics, guests get an up-close view as a pickup truck seemingly comes together right before their eyes and is a real “wow.”

Gantom Torch Technology
Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement Technology, Limited Budget The Gantom Torch is a fully controllable flashlight capable of receiving input from small, programmable infrared transmitters. The IR transmitters can be hidden anywhere in an entertainment space and programmed using an iOS app or a standard DMX controller. Each IR transmitter can be independently programmed to make the receivers (Torches) in the area respond in a particular way. Each Torch can blink, flash, strobe, or hold a constant color that has been preselected for a particular scene (i.e. blue for a frozen space). As guests move through particular scenes, their Torches can also vibrate at different pre-programmed frequencies (force feedback), based upon the action occurring in the show space. The Torch is a unique handheld, outdoor rated, programmable device that can access up to 16 million different color options and is affordable enough to be utilized within limited budget attractions. The Torch is a device that makes a show experience very personal for each guest. Whether the Torch is used in a haunt attraction, nighttime zoo safari, museum exhibit or other type of guest experience, the Torch reacts to each person’s specific movement through an environment. The Torch is unique in its ability to transform scenes via color shifts, 34
flashing and strobing. With the addition of programmable vibrations, major climactic moments are further enhanced. The Torch adds yet another programmable element to an Art Director or Producer’s palette of interactive options. The Gantom Torch is recognized as an exemplary show technology due to the unique and personal show experiences it can create, the device’s versatility, ease of programming and accessibility to most show designers due to its low cost.

Geppetto Animation Control System
Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement Technology Breakthrough The Geppetto Animation Control System is Super 78’s proprietary “living animated character” technology. Puppetry is one of the oldest live entertainment art forms. Geppetto ACS is a way to keep the art of puppetry alive, bring it to new generations and make it state-ofthe art. Geppetto ACS has the capability to incorporate multiple characters and all kinds of different environments. It also handles branching storytelling, 3D imagery, multiple screens and multiple intheater effects. The Geppetto Animation Control System is currently in use at the SpongeBob SubPants attraction at Moody Gardens and is controlled by an off-stage operator who wears a microphone headset and operates a simple hand controller for the character’s basic moves and expressions, along with character voicing. Much more involved animation motions and all of the 4D effects are additionally controlled from a large touch screen fully programmable for creating an unlimited variety of story lines, characters, and 4D effects. The entire presentation, while following a specific story flow line, can be interactively modified by a single operator. The response time is near instant and changes can be made as fast as fingers can fly across the control screen.
36
The Geppetto Animation Control System is a comprehensive 3D character, environment, and 4D effects show control system. The System can be easily programmed to create any animated audience interactive experience while being extremely fast and simple for a single off-stage operator to create completely different shows for every audience. The Geppetto Animation Control System has raised the bar to new heights in the quest to provide show producers with a fully proven and openly available tool to advance guest experiences for any venue, whether Theme Park, Museum, or future environments yet to be developed.

Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty, Victoria and Albert Museum LONDON, UK
Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement Museum Exhibit From the famous Kate Moss “hologram” to the presentational wow of the “Cabinet of Curiosities,” Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, where Alexander McQueen (1969-2010) was born, is an astonishing display of one man’s work – as if touring through the controversial fashion designer’s own mind. The exhibition ran March-August 2015. Featuring dozens of McQueen’s groundbreaking fashion works in a custom-built, customthemed environment, it drew attendance of nearly half a million over its 21-week run.
lighting and sound design added unique atmosphere, and integrated media contributed to the storytelling.
McQueen’s innovative and often bizarre fashion was imaginatively presented in ways that illuminated and framed the clothing on display. The V&A team constructed rooms within rooms to protect the Museum’s historical architecture. Each gallery became a frame for the art as well as an environment that immersed visitors into the style, look and feel of the fashion. Clever use of mirrors, reflective surfaces, angled walls and half-mirrored glass allowed visitors to explore in depth. Exemplary
Savage Beauty at the V&A was the first retrospective of McQueen’s work in Europe and the largest McQueen showcase to date. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York ran a separately curated McQueen exhibition of the same name in 2011. The subsequent V&A exhibition saw some areas re-focused, a new section looking at McQueen’s early career in London added with loans of rare early pieces, and an overall redesign of the exhibition.
42
The culmination - the “Cabinet of Curiosities,” lined with boxes filled with hats, shoes, mannequins, media, turntables and more was breathtaking in presentation and in the immense collection that delightfully overwhelmed the senses. Although the subject matter was haute couture, the provocative designs and craftsmanship were engrossing for all.

Les Amoureux de Verdun, Puy du Fou LES EPESSES, FRANCE
Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement Attraction, Limited Budget Puy du Fou, France’s beloved historical theme park, has taken a daring subject and turned it into a beautiful study in love and sorrow. Focusing their unique artistic vision for the first time on events of the twentieth century, Les Amoureux de Verdun takes visitors into the terrifying battlefields of winter 1916. We follow the love letters between a soldier and his fiancée, as they endure the pains of war; and we witness the miraculous Christmas Truce between the French and German soldiers. It’s not a ride… it’s not a stage show… it’s not a haunted maze, but incorporates elements of each. Visitors are surrounded by the sights and sounds of the snowy trenches of Verdun, snaking through trenches and foxholes, as cannon fire shakes the earth. Theatrical sets and lighting, live actors, animated props and projected media integrate perfectly to capture the atmosphere and draw us into the story. Puy du Fou’s creative team achieved a rare blend of historical accuracy and theatrical intensity. The team compiled over 7500 authentic world WWI artifacts, which serve as scenic dressing and props in the attraction. Fifteen live actors blend seamlessly with 80 animatronics

and static figures to populate the story, while multiple projection screens enlarge the canvas. This is the second Thea Award for Puy du Fou - the entire park was honored in 2012 with the Thea Classic Award.

“Moments of Happiness” at the World of Coca-Cola ATLANTA, GA, USA
Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement Corporate Visitor Center Rehab, Limited Budget The World of Coca-Cola is a top corporate visitor attraction in the US, regularly receiving annual attendance of more than one million. The attraction, located in Atlanta, has a series of experiences and exhibitions on the history of the company and the beverage, a tasting area, and a large retail shop. Beginning this entire experience is the preshow that includes the Coca-Cola Theater. “Moments of Happiness” is the new show created to refresh the theater and deliver a contemporary brand message. Staged in the Coca-Cola Theater, it is a six-minute film celebrating special moments in a variety of people’s lives. The film highlights inspiring and heart-warming experiences for people of all ages and many cultures. The sales pitch for Coke is very subtle, but the emotional impact is not. At the conclusion of the film, the screen rolls up to reveal the entrance to the World of Coca-Cola.
50
“Moments of Happiness” provides a new preshow experience in an outstanding and memorable way. The movie’s uplifting scenes, like a surprise visit home by a US soldier, a young boy’s first hesitant approach to a girl, and a spring break impossible basketball shot by a group of college friends, combined with upbeat music, strike a deep and powerful emotional chord in guests. There are very few dry eyes in the house, and the film combines the joy of poignant events in life with a quiet reference to the pleasures of drinking Coke. Visitors leave the theater feeling great about life. Visitor satisfaction surveys have skyrocketed and the overall attraction has a new buzz.

Fountain of Dreams WUYISHAN, CHINA
Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement Event Spectacular Wuyishan is one of China’s scenic, world-heritage regions and “Fountain of Dreams” is the story of the town’s fabled waters, unfolding through 12 compelling scenes. At its core are the simple beauty and power of Nature: the generous waters that sculpted the region’s emblematic mountains and the nine twists and turns of its famous river. These are evoked in the show as live performers work multiple levels of the stage as the story unfolds through water curtains, fire, 3D video mapping, LED, lasers, cascading waters, musical score and ghostly characters from China’s traditional past. Every aspect of the show – from theatrical décor to seating – is designed as if on one unified stage. The waterfall depicts the neighboring mountains with the terraces reminiscent of the still active tea-growing terraces in the region in a truly unique theater design. The sweeping roof has a contemporary cantilever design so that it appears to float, allowing a full field of vision of all the effects for the entire audience without any columns at the front. Many effects happen throughout the audience seating area. 3D mapping uses the entire canvas to achieve seamless imagery. The facility also houses what is said to be the world’s biggest outdoor water screen – 30 meters high. 54
“Fountain of Dreams” has been described as where technology innovation meets ancient storytelling. This is true and more: this unique nighttime spectacular breaks the barrier between audience and performance, immersing the audience into the world and experience of the story with an extremely well-crafted execution of both existing and innovative technology in a custom built show facility.

One World Observatory NEW YORK, NY, USA
Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement Attraction One World Observatory, operated by Legends and built on the site of the former World Trade Center, is a collection of experiences that celebrate the dynamics of Manhattan, its surroundings, and the resilient vitality of New York City. The attraction begins at ground level, where a series of preshow queues focus first on the people who constructed the new building, seen in the multi-screen “Voices.” This is followed by an informative themed re-creation of the bedrock beneath the structure in an area called “Foundations.” Visitors then ascend to the top in a 47-second elevator ride that includes an ascending panorama of Manhattan, covering more than 500 years of geographic and architectural change during the trip to the 102nd floor, where a row of kaleidoscopic screens and theatrics prepare visitors to “see forever.”
58
This is followed by a dramatic reveal of the city itself through expansive glass walls, and unique exhibits and interactive attractions such as “City Pulse” and “Sky Portal.” The return elevator trip to the ground floor uses the on-board screens in a very different manner, virtually transporting riders out of the elevator shaft for a helicopter-like flight around neighboring structures. One World Observatory had to find a comfort zone within a location inevitably tied to devastating recent history. The creators have succeeded in bringing this experience to life by contrasting the solemn nature of the memorial (the adjacent 911 Memorial & Museum) with a celebration of the rebirth of physical space. The design uses familiar and state-of-the-art tools to weave together what are usually the “blank spaces” of rooftop vistas (queuing, elevators, gift shops and viewing decks). The result is something arrestingly unique and unexpected and overcoming the challenges presented by an emotionally charged location.

How to Submit a Thea Award Nomination
Do you know of a wonderful Attraction, Theme Park, Museum, FEC, Zoo, Science Center, Resort, or Technical Breakthrough etc. that has recently opened? If so, nominate it for a Thea Award next year beginning April 1st. Judging takes place from August to October and recipients are announced the second week of November at the annual IAAPA Trade Show in Orlando, Florida. TEA’s Thea Committee is always looking for compelling places and experiences to award with the prestigious Thea Award. You don’t need to have worked on the project to nominate it and you CAN nominate your own project. Here’s how: Phase 1: Go to the TEA website at teaconnect.org. Click “Thea Awards” on the far right top line. Then click “Nominate a Project.” Once there, click on the “Online Application.” You will be directed to a website which houses the nomination ballot. To nominate a project, you will need to provide the following information on the nomination form: Name of Project Location Project Description Opening Date Name of Developer/Owner A 600-word Summary of the Nomination Category Additional information may be required for specialized categories such as limited budget or technical achievement Phase 2: An email response to your Phase 1 Nomination will include a link to use in submitting photos and materials, including a 3-5 minute video of the project from the guest’s point-of-view, i.e. queue line and inside the project from beginning to end. This is the most important submission for the Thea Committee’s review. Good luck. We hope you will consider nominating a terrific project for next year’s judging cycle! For more information, visit www.teaconnect.org, email info@teaconnect.org, call +1-818-843-8497, or write to Themed Entertainment Association, 150 E. Olive Ave., Suite 306, Burbank, CA 91502 USA

History of the Thea Awards “The establishment of the TEA Thea Awards as the preeminent award program recognizing excellence in Themed Entertainment projects was seminal to the recognition of Themed Entertainment as a professional industry. The Theas shine a bright light on the industry and its leaders, fabricators and creative geniuses who make Themed Entertainment magic. As the industry continues to expand into broader experience-oriented markets, the Theas have likewise grown. Today, the Thea Awards are increasingly recognized for their relevance and significance, far beyond anything the original Thea committee members had hoped for.” -- Themed Entertainment Association founder Monty Lunde, Technifex
Four recipients of the Thea Award for Lifetime Achievement: Harrison “Buzz” Price, Disney Legends John Hench and Marty Sklar, and Don Iwerks, Iwerks Entertainment
The third year (1996) saw the introduction of Awards for Outstanding Achievement (AOA). Ten AOAs were bestowed.
Monty Lunde
The Thea Awards began in 1994 with a single Lifetime Achievement Award, and the first honoree was Harrison “Buzz” Price, a pioneer in economic feasibility for entertainment projects. Monty Lunde, Bob Rogers, Pat Scanlon and Barry Howard were on the first Thea Awards organizational and judging committee, which needed only a single meeting to unanimously agree that Buzz was the right person to receive the very first Thea. The Thea Awards were named in reference to three words: •”Thea” - the Greek goddess from whom all light emanates •“Theater” – derived from the goddess Thea •“TEA” – the acronym referring to our Association The original Thea trophies were designed by Barry Howard and Jeremy Railton. The current Thea trophy debuted in 2001 and was designed by Zofia Kostryko. The first year’s ceremony, held at the Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles, was produced by Ron Miziker, and coordinated by Jana Love, with TEA founder Monty Lunde serving as master of ceremonies. The 1995 Thea Awards also took place at the Biltmore, again with a single honoree: Disney Legend Marty Sklar.
64
In 1997, two special AOA categories were created: Excellence on a Limited Budget to celebrate outstanding achievements under $10 million, and the Thea Classic Award, which can be given to one achievement per year that has stood the test of time. In 2014-2015, new Wizarding World of Harry Potter attractions at Universal Studios prompted the Thea Awards Committee to create the Paragon Award, which recognizes a project that sets a new bar of excellence. After Harrison Price passed away in 2010, TEA renamed the Thea Lifetime Achievement Award in his honor. It is now called the Buzz Price Thea Award for a Lifetime of Distinguished Achievements. The culture of the Thea Awards is unique. Here are some key characteristics: • Honoree: the project itself - The award honors the entire achievement. The trophy is awarded to the project owner. • Official project credits – The project owner is obliged to furnish a comprehensive credits list for publication by TEA. The credits appear in the printed Thea Awards Program, and on the TEA website. In this way the Thea Awards have resulted in the first official project credits of the themed entertainment industry. • Trophies for the team – Individuals and companies named on the official credits list of a Thea-honored project are entitled to obtain their own trophies from TEA. • No set categories – The TEA is free to honor several achievements in the same category, to create a new category, or to skip categories as the year’s achievements warrant.
Congratulations to our good friends Keith James

TEA Distinguished Service Award along with all of the Thea Award recipients
• No secrets – The slate of award recipients is announced in November, and the awards are presented to those recipients the following spring at the Thea Awards Gala. There are no surprise announcements, no names concealed in envelopes. • Open nominations – Anyone can nominate a project for a Thea Award. It is not necessary to be a TEA member. You can nominate your own project. “The objective of the Thea Awards is simple: To find excellence and celebrate it. As we look to the future, the Thea Awards will continue to grow and evolve, while continuing to honor the original objective of bringing recognition to achievement, talent and professional excellence within our themed entertainment industry.” -Bob Rogers, BRC Imagination Arts

Foresta Lumina, Parc de la Gorge de Coaticook QC, CANADA
Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement Attraction, Limited Budget The natural state of a dense forest, known for its hiking trails and and beautiful surroundings, is the canvas for Foresta Lumina. This immersive and multisensory nighttime experience along a 1.5 mile stretch was inspired by forest mythology and local legends. The adventure begins by crossing the Gorge on one of the world’s longest pedestrian suspension bridges. Visitors carry a map of the trail and will first encounter a mysterious, misty portal that is located on the bridge itself. Passing this portal takes visitors to the Garden of Wishes. Here, seven beautifully illuminated manuscripts introduce the cast of fictional characters that inhabit the park’s nocturnal landscape. Mysterious runes tie the interactive storyline together. Each character is carefully designed and presented with sophisticated lighting, audio, mist and a variety of theatrical effects that create a moody but magical setting.
68
Experiences with mapped media and lighting effects gain popularity every year. The creators of Foresta Lumina were tasked to adapt these modern technologies to a living environment that calls for nuance in its scale and execution. It is the unique forest setting and local folklore, balanced with the subtle adaptation of multimedia that makes the project stand out.

Disney Paint the Night Hong Kong Disneyland Park & Disneyland Park HONG KONG & ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA, USA
Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement Parade Spectacular This is an electrical parade lit entirely of LED lights (a first of its kind)… except these LED lights are really Pixie dust from Tinker Bell and Mickey Mouse’s magic paintbrush, pulsing with colors and sparkle. Tinker Bell’s Fiber Fairies wear costumes adorned with fiberoptic strands that can be touched by guests with special interactive wands that change their color. Pixar properties brought to life include Monsters, Inc., Cars and Toy Story. The Monsters, Inc. float features Sulley and Mike and a series of spinning peek-a-boo doors with hidden video screens that reveal scary monsters. Lightning McQueen leads the Cars contingent with the 25,000-light Mack truck followed by the glow-in-the-dark Cars Crew dancers. The Toy Story float, dubbed Electric Rodeo, features a 20-foot-long Slinky Dog with Sheriff Woody and Buzz Lightyear sitting precariously atop the illuminated coils. The Lasso Dancers, each spinning a lighted ball on a string designed to look like a neon lasso, are joined by Jessie the cowgirl. No Disney parade would be complete without a procession of princesses. Belle from Beauty and the Beast commands the lead float dominated by a massive red rose with Cinderella and Rapunzel on trailing candelabra mini-floats. The Court Dancer performers wear color-changing costumes while the Dove Dancers look like winged ballerinas. The 25-foot-tall Little Mermaid float features a massive King 70
Triton figure with a rear-projection face. A large troupe of performers tags behind, including the electroluminescent coral fish as well as the Nemo and Marlin characters. The finale is truly spectacular, with Mickey Mouse wielding a giant paint brush to control a wild kinetic sculpture that creates an optical illusion with an array of disco balls. As the lights and geometry move, the optical illusion is truly magical to see. Technology advancement is a good thing, especially when it comes to re-imagining the Main Street Electrical Parade. The new Disney Paint the Night is a marvel of lighting technology, creative artistry, storytelling, showmanship, live performance, and interactivity centered around beloved Disney characters, both recent and classic. The parade opened at Hong Kong Disneyland in October 2014 and opened at Disneyland with several added elements in May 2015 as part of the park’s 60th Diamond Celebration – a show of massive scale, mounted twice within 12 months on two different continents. The parade has over 1.5 million lights on floats, costumes and video screens. Special guest merchandise was developed that synchronizes to the parade as it moves down the street. Along the way, homage is paid to the original Electric Light Parade – including a drum float and some of the original music score.

Buzz Price Thea Award for a Lifetime of Distinguished Achievements Keith James: Family man, business leader By Jack Rouse The Thea Awards began in 1994 with a single Lifetime Achievement Award, and the first honoree was Harrison “Buzz” Price, pioneer in economic feasibility for entertainment projects. After Buzz passed away in 2010, the award was renamed in his honor. If you are in the themed entertainment business or are in any way involved with the Themed Entertainment Association, then you know the name of Keith James. And if you are like many of your colleagues, the words that come to mind when describing Keith are likely to be: honest, great integrity, thoughtful, loyal, consummate businessman, straight as an arrow. And while those words are all true, they are also part of a TEA myth, because such was not always the case. FLASHBACK TIME! When Keith was 17, he had his driver’s license suspended for drag racing with his girlfriend in a buddy’s Corvette. In 1970, he embraced then-prevalent hippie culture and - perhaps channeling Peter Fonda or Dennis Hopper - embarked on a 10-week, 15,000-mile motorcycle trip across the United States. It was on that trip that Keith visited Disneyland - is that where the infatuation with themed entertainment began? Who knows?

ON THE ROAD! A few years later Taft’s theme park expansion began. In 1979 Keith was re-assigned to Toronto as the Director of Planning and Development for Canada’s Wonderland, later becoming Director of Park Operations. ON THE ROAD AGAIN!! In 1983 Keith trekked across the continent (this time not on a motorcycle) to Vancouver where he became Vice President of Operations for Expo ‘86. More importantly, it was in Vancouver that Keith and Patti’s eldest daughter, Alexis was born. ON THE ROAD AGAIN, AGAIN!!!! Keith remained with the Expo organization only a short time - in 1983 Taft recruited him back to the fold and sent him to Sydney, Australia to become Managing Director of Australia’s Wonderland. It was in Sydney that Keith and Patti’s youngest daughter Chloe was born. The James family
ONE MORE TIME ON THE ROAD AGAIN!!! (IS THERE A THEME HERE?) Wanderlust set in again in 1987 when Universal Studios hired Keith as Vice-President of Show Production for Universal Studios Florida. Shortly thereafter he was promoted to Senior Vice President of Planning and Development. ON THE ROAD - OMG, NOT AGAIN! Then in 1992 Keith returned to Cincinnati to join Jack Rouse Associates. Now known as JRA, he remains there today as CEO/Owner. Keith has spent his professional life moving from gig to gig. From Cincinnati to Toronto to Vancouver to Sydney to Orlando to Cincinnati:
Patti and Keith James
In the 1960s he was a fiercely competitive swimmer, garnering numerous regional and state awards for the Cincinnati Marlins, an elite swim team. (Yes, Keith was once an “elitist”). And while doing all that, he graduated from Walnut Hills High School in Cincinnati, entered the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati, where he did not study piano, but rather earned a BFA in technical theater. “Nervous nights lighting Man of La Mancha,” his brother Sandy remembers. He graduated in 1970 and shortly thereafter went to work for Taft Broadcasting. Taft had recently acquired Coney Island in Cincinnati and Hanna-Barbera in Hollywood as foundational elements for a theme park they were just beginning to build in Ohio: Kings Island. There, he became production manager for the live shows program and later assistant director of operations. While auditioning performers for the first year of the live shows program, an aspiring young performer named Patti Schmitz entered his life. Mythology has it that she may have stretched the truth about her age to get the gig; in any case, she was hired and a few years later became Mrs. Harry Keithan James. During the early years of the Taft parks, Keith and some colleagues formed Kings Productions, which for many years was the creative division of the Taft family of theme parks.

Solving problems, creating a better place, taking the best from where he worked and leaving the rest behind. In view of that first, momentous 1970s motorcycle trip that started in Cincinnati, maybe there’s some thematic symbolism here: shooting for the stars, aiming for the best, constantly learning, constantly improving…at least, that’s what his sister Carrie remembers (full disclosure: brother Sandy and sister Carrie are twins - not relevant, but interesting). Keith has always made the most of opportunities to be actively involved with the important associations of our industry: the TEA (several years as president) and IAAPA (board of directors). And in spite of the revocation of his driver’s license for drag racing, and in spite of a 1970s biker/hippie image, Keith has become one of the themed entertainment industry’s most respected leaders. His entire professional career has been in themed entertainment, and his passion for the industry is evident to all who know him. What might not be quite as evident unless you know Keith well is his passion for his wife and his two daughters. That should probably earn him an award that recognizes a lifetime of achievements in supporting those whom he loves. Jack Rouse describes himself as “longtime friend, biker-buddy, colleague and business partner with Keith James since the 1970s.” He was also the founder of Jack Rouse Associates (JRA) and a fellow Thea recipient, honored in 2008 by TEA for lifetime achievement.
Do what you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life. Congratulations on a lifetime of passionate achievement. From your friends and family.

TEA Distinguished Service Award John W. Robinett: Not just a “numbers guy” By Gene Jeffers The TEA honors John Robinett this year with the TEA Distinguished Service Award, presented annually in recognition of a TEA member’s outstanding contributions “above & beyond the call of duty.” We also thank his wife Sherry and their three sons for sharing this “numbers guy” with an entire industry and our Association. Without them, the TEA would shine less brightly today. So what, exactly, is a mild-mannered, “numbers guy” doing in the creative-infested waters of the Themed Entertainment Association? Quite a lot, it so happens. So much that John W. Robinett, Senior Vice President, Economics at AECOM, is this year’s recipient of the TEA Distinguished Service Award. In addition to his day job ensuring the financial viability and success of projects around the world, for two decades John has given time and expertise to the Association as a Board Member, sponsored events and activities through his company, presented and spoken at TEA conferences, advocated and ensured 82
the continuation and growth of the annual TEA/AECOM Theme Index publication, and chaired and served as committee member of the TEA Thea Awards Committee. And the “day job” was demanding. Everyone, from the Walt Disney Company to the Getty Museum, from the Beach Park in Brazil to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, from Universal Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Warner Bros., Ripley’s Entertainment, Merlin Entertainments and the American Museum of Natural History… the list goes on and on of companies and projects that wanted John’s attention. Attendance projections, financial viability, project valuations, development options, market reviews, a blizzard of economic reports and analyses has flown from his desk, as he found ways to maximize benefits for the owners and enjoyment for the guests. But John felt he could do more to help an industry that was just starting to recognize itself, and fortunately, he discovered the fledgling TEA.
“In the early days when I first joined, the TEA was filled with competing viewpoints and positions,” John remembers. Not unusual for a new organization comprised of creative and passionate people. Elected to the TEA International Board of Directors, John found himself acting as an intermediary between various competing positions, helping different perspectives to be heard and easing a number of the young association’s growing pains. “I like to feel I brought some business calmness to the TEA,” he recalls of his two terms on the Board. Through conference presentations, John shared his expertise with TEA members, helping others to better understand market conditions and economic realities in China, the Middle East and wherever projects were being created. He successfully lobbied ERA (Economics Research Associates) - and AECOM, after it acquired ERA - to be active regional and international event sponsors, helping to provide additional benefits for TEA members and to help ensure the financial viability of the association. John plays a critical role in producing the TEA/AECOM Theme Index and Museum Index, an annual report documenting the top-attended theme parks, water parks and now museums worldwide. While an entire team at AECOM works on collecting, compiling and presenting the data, he has led the effort to develop, expand and improve this essential industry reference. “It is important to understand the numbers behind the business,” John says about the Theme Index, “- to provide some transparency to an industry that is growing, maturing, becoming more important and more complex every day.” John has also helped make the TEA Thea Awards possible, serving on the Thea Awards Committee for nearly a decade, and chairing that auspicious body twice. “What a pleasure to serve with such amazing people,” he says. “People now aspire to receive a Thea Award, they encourage operators and vendors to create better, more engaging attractions, to improve their guests’ experiences. Every time that happens, the entire industry benefits.” Indeed, there is quite a lot for a numbers person to do in themed entertainment, and in the Themed Entertainment Association. After all, an economic feasibility analysis helps move a project successfully forward. But like most people in this industry, the interest and pleasure go beyond the purely professional. It’s a business on which one gets hooked. “Well, first, TEA members are great people, incredibly creative, great ideas, very good to work with from a business perspective, be friends with, have good relationships with,” John says. “They appreciate one another’s gifts and talents. It is really rewarding to work with TEA members.” Perhaps more important, he adds, “In what can be a complex, difficult and challenging world, this business, these people bring hope and joy and escape. Those things are necessary for humanity. For all of us to thrive we can’t lose hope, we can’t lose joy. Without them, the world would be a much darker place.” Gene Jeffers is past Executive Director of TEA, and was the first recipient of the TEA Distinguished Service Award.
CONGRATULATIONS & PRAISE FROM JOHN ROBINETT’S COLLEAGUES AND A CLIENT I have known John from his early days in this industry, and have watched as he has grown into a true professional in the field. It is gratifying to see him sharing his wealth of knowledge with others to help the industry. In particular, his work with TEA has had a positive impact. Ray Braun, Entertainment + Culture Advisors For over 25 years, I have had the pleasure to work with John, a great source of advice and deep history in the industry. Chris Yoshii, AECOM Vice President, Global Director of Economics, Design Planning+Economics Asia When John Robinett hired me out of investment banking in London back in 1997, I had no idea how much I would learn working with him, and how much fun I would have at the same time! We at AECOM are very fortunate to have John as a colleague and leader. Brian Sands, AICP, AECOM Vice President – Economics John Robinett has been mentor and friend. Way back in 1995, shortly after he launched ERA in Europe, he took a chance on me as a graduate consultant. John is wise and well-connected, and has a strong moral compass and faith that shape his approach to work and life. He has plenty more to give, but it is wonderful and fitting that TEA is celebrating his contributions. Ben Martin, Principal, AECOM Economics It is a pleasure working with John Robinett for his experience and knowledge of the market. He has helped us in our development over the years, facilitating our sustainable growth. I consider John a great professional as well as a good friend and partner of several journeys. Murilo Pascoal, General Director, Beach Park Resorts As a professional in the field of economic analysis, John has advanced the art by applying his creative problem solving skills to many new attraction concepts in ever changing market environments. As a consultant, he has maintained the highest standards of objectivity and professional integrity. As a colleague, John has been a supportive leader, always willing to share ideas and encouragement.
