Governor General The Commonwealth of the Bahamas
Executive Chaiman’s Message PASTOR PATRICK V. SMITH, Th.B., J.P. “If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain; If I can ease one life the aching, or cool one pain, Or help one fainting soldier of Christ unto his Saviour’s breast again, Then I shall not have lived in vain.” -Emily
Dickinson
t is with a deep sense of love and gratitude to the Creator and Sustainer of life, ‘Yaweh – Jehovah’, The Almighty One; Jesus, The Christ, our Risen Lord and Redeemer, and Saviour of the world; and indeed the Holy Spirit – the Paraclete – our guide and comforter, protector and preserver, I extend sincere congratulations to all of the men and women who are being honoured tonight. We also offer warm greetings to all of you who have come to share In this auspicious occasion. In keeping with the 40th Independence anniversary celebrations this year, we have extended our repertoire of honourees to include persons who have made and some still making significant contributions to the growth and development of our beloved Commonwealth.
Executive Chaiman’s Message During the 40 years of our independence, the Bahamian people have advanced economically, socially, educationally and physically. The country itself has grown through leaps and bound by way of physical infrastructure and development; so we thought it very appropriate to pay tribute to some of the men and women who have played a pivotal role in nation building. Some of our honourees have worked tirelessly in the trenches, whether in the front line or in the background and have since retired from active duty. While many have suffered from ‘selective amnesia’, the Executive Committee along with so many people whose lives they have touched and impacted during their time of service have gathered tonight to say, “We have not forgotten you! We still remember your labour of love and your sacrificial commitment in going the extra mile, and in many cases without proper recognition, to ensure that a strong and permanent foundation is laid for a better Bahamas. Many of you chose to go without, just to make sure that your children could embrace every possible opportunity to be educated, trained and skilled in the various disciplines for a successful life-long journey……a legacy of faith in the One True and Living God, a rich Heritage based on honesty and hard work, and a life-style that is comfortable, stable and productive in which generations who follow can be proud. We are extremely blessed to highlight and promote the bedrock of any society, THE FAMILY. We salute couples who have withstood the storms of marriage life and have kept their vows for more than fifty-five (55) years PLUS; with special mention of Minister Uhijah Johnson, who is now 100 years old and his companion Ellen who is 93 years old, and have stayed together from the day they were joined in matrimony in 1937…….78 years! What a miraculous, awesome accomplishment! We hope you enjoy this evening’s celebration and our prayer is that each of you remain faithful to Almighty God, to your families, your local church, your communities knowing that God has yet even a greater reward that awaits in your name!
Happy Anniversary Bahamas ONE NATION UNDER GOD!

40 Years of Independence: A Great and Glorious Gift By Patricia Glinton-Meicholas © 2013
In celebrating our country’s 40th anniversary of Independence, it is important to appreciate the many marvelous gifts with which God has blessed the Bahamian people and dedicate ourselves to prize and protect them. There is no gift more precious than the land God has given us to call home. The Bahamas is unique in many ways. As attested by explorers, scientists, astronauts and the millions who visit our islands annually, our geography is spectacular. To appreciate this, one has only to survey Cat Island from Mount Alvernia atop Comer Hill, or see a great flock of flamingos fly over the waterways of the Crooked Island District or catch a glimpse of the Eleuthera’s Glass Window Bridge or the cliffs of Abaco’s Hole in the Wall overlooking the Northwest Providence Channel. What could surpass the clarity of our waters and the beauties of living reefs and all the strange and wonderful plants and animals that live on and around them? It is essential to remember that, in God’s world, ownership also requires stewardship. As one of the main planks of our Independence celebrations, therefore, we should commit to treasuring our homeland through environmental protection. Not only do we have a responsibility for keeping clean and
protecting those properties that we own personally, but we are also call upon to extend our care to our neighbourhoods, to our waters and to every island in this great archipelago and the plants and animals that share them with us. Let us never be guilty of wanton destruction or neglect anywhere or in any regard in the natural or any realm. As we learn from history, the very first blessing was that the islands of what is now known as The Bahamas provided a centuries-long haven for an Arawak people, who, for whatever reason, left their homeland in South American, braving storm, wave and attack from other to settle here. Furthermore, our islands have had a greater impact on the world than one would have expected, judging by the size of this country, its population and its relatively minor political status on the international scale through the years of its recorded existence. When Christopher Columbus made landfall at Guanahani on October 12, 1492, the Bahama islands became a bridge between the “Old World” and the “New World”. The latter yielded many precious metals, agricultural novelties and much folk knowledge that became the salvation of Europe. In the years leading to this opening up for vast, rich new territories, the Old World had struggled with overpopulation, vast pockets of poverty and endemic sickness. There is still more for which to be grateful to the Almighty. From the time of the Spanish invasion and forcible removal the native Lucayans from these islands, the shame and degradation of slavery was brought to this blessed country by men, who had the temerity to besmirch the individuality, right to life and liberty with which all humankind has been endowed by our Creator and the laws of nature. This sin was compounded when enslaved Africans were removed from their homeland and brought to these shores, compelled to abandon kith and kin with no chance of seeing them again.
Our ancestors were forced to toil endlessly with no right to reward or citizenship and often in the face of abuse of all human beings tend to hold dear.
without significant let or hindrance from the government or the citizenry. We are blessed that when we kneel or stand to pray and praise our God, by whatever name, and without oppressing others, we do so without fear of being beaten, imprisoned or killed, as is the fate of millions around the globe. On this 40th anniversary of Independence, we must reflect on this gift with profound thanksgiving.
We can be proud that, although the majority of our ancestors came to the archipelago as slaves, subject to the orders and whims of those who held them as chattel property, they had the smarts and the courage to find a mental and spiritual freedom that gave them an important degree of independence long before the formal Act of Emanci- Then there is the gift that is the reason for celebrating each pation was passed by the British Parlia- year. He participated in numerous leadership programs throughout the United States and was promoted to Marketing Manager. He went on to become the owner operator of Esso Tiger Market on Wulff Road and Montrose Avenue. Currently he operates the Esso on the Run, South Beach location. Greg currently attends Holy Cross Anglican Church, where he is an active member of the Anglican Church Men and the Usher Ministry. Greg has received many notable awards, both locally and internationally. Greg’s passion has always been Youth Development through Sports & Culture. This accounts for his involvement in Junkanoo, American Football, Baseball, Soccer, Softball, and Track & Field. Despite all of the contributions Greg would have made at a very young age in the area of Youth Sports development, it was not until 1989 that he took the challenge to bring together young men from throughout New Providence teaching them basic life learning skills and the fundamentals of baseball. It was here that Freedom Farm Baseball League was born. The program grew by leaps and bounds, quickly outgrowing its location on Joe Farrington Road. Being the “go-getter” Greg Burrows is known to be; he mobilized all of his resources and eventually identified a new location at Yamacraw Beach Estates where he immediately commenced construction of a new four-field baseball complex. Greg has never turned any child away; he is a firm advocate of intervention. He believes that there is no such thing as a “lost” child and that every child can be productive if given guidance. Greg has recently offered himself to higher service to country by becoming involved in politics. He is currently a Senator and has been appointed to the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture.

She was the sixth child out of nine siblings. Bessie left Exuma and moved to Nassau to find work. Her first job was working at the Burnside Laundrymat on Meadow Street. Her heart has always been for the elderly and the young, and those persons who were unable to take care of themselves. During her time in Florida, the Lord brought so many people in her life that needed a place to stay, food to eat, clothes to wear and she would open her home to them and take care of them free of charge. She has stitched up thousands of wounds, and tended to thousands of issues ranging from common colds to shark bites. Always a mother and lover of children, she had 10 of her own and adopted 12 others. Besides these, she looked out for all the children with whom she came into contact. Many who attended the clinic not only left with relief from their ailment, but also a full stomach. Food for the stomach was not the only thing she had to dish out. “Nurse Co” always had an encouraging Scriptural based word for persons with whom she communicated. Bishop Arrie Percentie’s journey to greatness began at the age of eleven when he accepted Jesus as his personal Lord and Saviour under Billy Graham’s Evangelistic Ministries. His early work in servant-hood began with him assisting in the repair work of damaged homes belonging to senior citizens and other less fortunate individuals in Little Farmer’s Cay, Exuma - his home from infancy. In 1973 he started the Christian Soldier Academy - a ministry where he gathered children from the Grant’s Town and Bain Town communities to the various parks to teach them Religious Knowledge. He also administered official Boy’s Scout training. Every chance he got he would find ways to assist the poor and needy and those who had no place to stay. Bishop became so burdened with the homeless persons who had to sleep in Malcolm Park, Retirement Park, Potters’ Cay dock and even in abandoned cars, until he acquired and renovated an old two- story building on East street and converted it into twenty three (23) double occupancy rooms. It was here that he also established the House of Prayer Ministries where could provide spiritual counseling and to give out clothing and food. March 26th, 1994 he married a co-partner in ministry, Debra who has joined him in the struggle against the evil spirit of poverty that is still plaguing our land. Together they have fed and clothed those in need in several different areas. They have built a five room unit in Binley Lane to provide shelter for those without a place to sleep. We salute this dynamic duo who continue to be used of God in the communities of Farm Road, Bain and Grant’s town, feeding the hungry, clothing the naked and offering spiritual guidance to the ‘Whole man’.
Community Service Award MR. DAVID DEAN
Great Harbour Cay, Berry Island Humble, hard working, committed, loyal, courageous, conscientious, are just some of the words that describe the character of David Dean of Bullocks Harbour, Great Harbour Cay, Berry Island. Son of the late William A. and Ada Dean, he has followed in his father’s footsteps in his service to his God and as Catechist of their beloved St. Bartholomew Anglican Church. “Dave” as he is affectionately called has been in the trenches fighting for the continued growth and development and and advancement of Great Harbour Cay. He is often referred to as ‘the mayor’ of Berry Island. He possesses a heart of gold and is passionate about helping everybody. His motivation throughout his life has always been finding ways of making his community a better place and keeping it as a tourist haven. He has served on many boards on the Island but it was never about having a title. Rather, Dave lead by example. He would do whatever needed to be done and never blinked an eye. To him serving others was always priority; giving assistance to a brother or sister in need made his day; making a visitor comfortable and happy made his mission complete. Dave loves his family. His wife Beverly and their children can all attest to the fact that he is extremely generous and would oft time give his last just to lighten someone’s burden. A great man with the love of God in his heart.
Humanitarian Award DR. NICHOLAS T. FOX
General Manager, Medi Centre Clinic “I am just a humble servant for my People” The Old adage: “If one man takes a stand and there remains, unmoving, the world must come around to him” bears witness to the resolve and ambition of Dr. Nicholas Fox, a Physician and partner in the Medi-Center Clinic. His desires to serve people as a Boy Scout mushroomed into a determination to become a Physician and after nine years of struggles, rejections and disappointments, he achieved his life-long dream of becoming a medical doctor in 1988. Born in 1962, the eleventh child to Revie and Thelma Fox of Fox Hill, Nassau, Nicholas grew up on a close –knit family with lots of love and discipline. The youngest of eleven children, his father was a police officer and his mother a teacher. Together they taught him always respect others, and instilled in him and his siblings the value of a healthy work ethics at an early age. A product of the Catholic education system, he attended St. Anslem’s primary School and continued on to St. Augustine’s College, where his desire to become a Physician intensified. After graduating high school in 1979 at the tender age of 16, he selected St. Leo’s University a small Catholic institution in Central Florida because he felt that it would meet the standard that had been instilled in him, Although college life proved to be so different than he had excepted, he flourished in this new environment and gained independence and social acceptance. Nicholas suffered a tremendous blow during his last year in college, when both his mother and grandmother died of breast cancer. He was so devastated that he wanted to quit school and return to Nassau. He would have done just that had it not been for the stern, sound advice and support of his family and friends. Having been thus encouraged, he persevered and continued toward his goal, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Chemistry in 1984. Nicholas graduated from Ross University in 1988 and received his MD certification. He returned to the Bahamas and took up employment at the Princess Margaret Hospital, and in April of 1994 he realized another dream when he along with Dr. Christopher Basden, launched The MediCenter Clinic on Collins Avenue. In 2012, Nicholas was awarded a Master of Degree for the London School of Venereal Disease in HIV/STD with honors. Dr. Nicholas Fox has been married to his wife, Godiva for twenty-four years and they are the proud parents of two children: Nicholette and Nicholas. At the age of 11 in 1960; on the invitation and in the company of an older neighbor namely Mrs. Earlean Poitier; she attended a special service at Bethel Baptist Church, which drew her to its fold. The then; Pastor Harcourt W. Brown, received her as a member within the next few weeks and she still worships there today. Although an active member of Transfiguration Baptist Church; her mother; made it known that she was never to leave the folds of Bethel. National Service Award ALVA E. SMITH, SR.
Former Deputy Comptroller of Customs Born in obscurity, with humble beginnings, to the parentage of a native of The Bluff, Eleuthera, Mr. George Trevor Smith, a ‘no nonsense’, strict, ardent, articulate Head-Master with the Ministry of Education and his hard working, independent, outspoken wife of Arthur’s Town, Cat Island, Mrs. Alean Rowena Smith, nee Culmer, known as “Papa” and “Sister” respectively, both deceased, ALVA EDISON was ushered into this world on September 25th, 1931. The family was not accustomed to a permanent residence as his father was often posted to various Family Islands to head the all age schools. He remembers vividly receiving his early education in George Town, Exuma where he remained until the leaving age of 14yrs then became what was common in those days, a ‘school monitor’ until 1945. After a brief move to Mangrove Cay, Andros, he took the entrance exam for “The” Government High School in Nassau and passed with flying colours. From 1946 to 1950 he practically had to fend for himself in the big city, along with his younger brother, Ira on the famous corner of Boyd and Farrington roads which eventually became the ole’ stomping ground and home-stead for the Smith Family in years to come. “Daddy” always told the stories of his ‘hard, difficult’ days of survival as his older brothers were already married with families of their own. He stuck it out long enough to sit and successfully pass the Cambridge Jr. and Sr. exams. However, the burden and the struggle of finding enough food to eat, adequate clothing and just the extreme lack of having the basic necessities to survive became absolutely unbearable. He was forced to leave school months short of graduation to seek employment. He left with a plan, a vision, a strong will and desire, a tenacious spirit, highly gifted and motivated, and with an indomitable faith in God, he stepped out on an unknown path seeking “better” for himself. After a few odd and end jobs he landed himself employment with the then exclusive, famous Victoria Hotel as a Bell-hop and remained there for six (6) years. It was at this establishment that he stood out as an intelligent, honest, outgoing, trust worthy, loyal and courteous employee. Here he met and found favour with many rich and famous guests from all over the world who would eventually become a blessing to his life. Shortly after working at the hotel, he met the love of his life, then fifteen (15) year old beautiful Alrena Louise Dean who lived on the “Fort Hill” with Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Thompson. They were joined in matrimony at St. Agnes Anglican Church, known as the “Cathedral” over the hill by Canon Milton Cooper on August 12th, 1952. This union produced nine (9) children and they remained committed to their marital vows for fifty (50) years and five (5) months until the circle was broken by the death of his beloved “Rena” January 13th, 2003. It was the year 1956 at the maturing age of 25 years, Alva landed a job with the Bahamas Customs Department working around the office dealing with files. During those days, the name “Customs Officers” was not used, rather the name “tide waiters” surfaced. By 1959 he received his first bar. By 1968 he moved up to a Supervisor with three (3) stripes. Shortly after, he was sent to be in charge at the airport for three years. In 1971 he became a Chief Customs Officer. Four years later elevated to Assistant Comptroller. In 1983 was promoted to Deputy Comptroller and held this position until his retirement in 1991. Most of his counterparts have gone on to reap their reward, but in his 82nd year, God continues to bless him with a strong body and a youthful disposition. To God Be All The Glory! WE SALUTE YOU, SIR!

National Service Award REV’D CHARLES E. ROLLE
Former Deputy Superintendent, Prison Department Charles Ephraim Rolle was born made his entrance into this world sixty-one (61) years ago in the idyllic little settlement of Harts Well on the island of Exuma. He was the fourth of seven children born out of the consecrated union of the late Leader John and Mother Arimina Rolle (nee Evans). Charles, even at an early age, displayed a prodigious propensity for standing up for what he believed, sometimes much to the chagrin of his parents and siblings. This characteristic remained with him over the years, including his years of service at Her Majesty’s Prison. It is this same conviction that he continues to display in his quest to bring sinners to the acknowledgement of Jesus Christ as Lord and Master. While still an adolescent young Charles realizing that the formula for success was in seeking after things eternal, accepted the Lord into his life. Upon completion of his early education in Exuma, he moved to New Providence in search of economic opportunities. He joined himself with the congregation of The Mission Baptist Church under the late Reverend Dr.Ruben E. Cooper, Sr. Charles was also a founding member of the chapter of the Royal Ambassador established at The Mission Baptist Church. He eventually joined the Prison Service in 1970 where through hard work, perseverance and by the grace of God he rose to the rank of Deputy Superintendent. In 1974, our Pastor was joined in Holy Matrimony with the lovely Laverne Rolle (nee Clarke). The union was blessed with five children – Claudia, Latoya, Nekeisha, Tito and La-chelle. These joined the three sons he had fathered before his marriage (Shaun, Utah and Christian) to form the tight unit that is the Rolle’s Family. Hearing the call to the Holy Ministry and with the full support and encouragement of his lovely wife, Pastor Rolle who was at that time worshipping at the Faith United Missionary Baptist Church, a church he assisted in establishing, heeded the call. To further prepare himself for the Ministry, Pastor Rolle took a leave of absence from Her Majesty’s Prisons, and enrolled in the American Baptist Theological Seminary in Nashville, Tennessee where he pursued a double major in theology and sociology. In 1992 Pastor Rolle, accompanied by a small band of followers, was led by the Spirit to establish the Mount Nebo Union Baptist Church. This group had to endure many hardships, but like good soldiers of Christ they prevailed. Since that humble beginning, God has poured and continues to pour out his blessings on the Mount Nebo Ministry which is now into its 21st year.

National Service Award mr. stephen g.e. burrows, sr. Former B.E.C. Manager
Steve, as he is affectionately called, hails from Governor’s Harbour, Eleuthera. In his late teens, he migrated to Nassau seeking employment; as he jokingly says, “to make my own way”. He is the second of 15 children, born to Sidney and Freda Burrows. He attended the Governor’s Harbour All Age School, and further studied in New Providence under the tutelage of Dr. Saul and Mr. Bosfield Johnson. His first job was with Dr. Turner outfitting oxygen masks on deep sea diving trips. He also worked as a mate on the Lady Murphy’s yacht. In 1956, he joined The Bahamas Electricity Corporation to pursue a career in engineering. He excelled in this area from apprentice to Manager of Blue Hills Power Station for almost ten years. He assisted with the Soldier Road Station and Clifton Pier Station for some years. He was in charge of the Rock Sound Power Station in Eleuthera in August 1992 – April 1993 and was made a consultant to the corporation after his tenure in Eleuthera and was a consultant for the Abaco Power Station in August 2005 to November 2008. Steve served at BEC above and beyond the call of duty for almost forty years. In his pursuit of excellence, he was sent by BEC to study the various types of engines especially gas turbines in England, Wales, Scotland, Switzerland, Japan, Venezuela and U.S.A. Steve worked with General Electric on special projects for BEC. Steve has high ethical and moral standards and did not tolerate slackness on the job from anyone at any time or anywhere for that matter. In 1959, he married E. Shirley Dean, from the Berry Islands. They were blessed with seven children: La Verne, Linda, Stephen, Lisa, Laurell, Faye and Felice, sons-in-law and 14 grandchildren. Steve is a devoted family man who loves his wife and children. He always admonished his children to be leaders and not followers. To do what is right and be respectable and hard workers. He taught his children to live by his example. He openly expressed his love and affection for his wife Shirley and states his faithfulness to her only. Steve loved flying planes and flew 150, 172 and 206 Cessna planes. Oh, but he was a daredevil, and he when would “buzz” the house, you could actually see him sitting in the cock pit. Steve was an avid weightlifter and won Mr. Bahamas in 1973. Steve is a lover of Art and a self-taught Metal Sculptor. During the 1980’s he crafted large pieces of artwork which include: the Conchshell, Coat of Arms, Lobster, Whitecrown Pigeon, Flamingo, Dragon, Iguana , Rat Bat and Parrot. In 1984, the Bahamas Iguana was unveiled in New York and later presented to the Wardsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut. In 2008, upon the request of the then Minister Phenton Neymour, he was commissioned to make a statue of Pompey in Steventon Exuma.
