FREEDOM 2 CHOOSE
Last time, I gave you an incite as to where all this misery for smokers started, courtesy of former British Chief Medical Officer Sir George Godber at a World conference on Smoking & Health 1975. I quote:- “It would be essential to foster an atmosphere where it was perceived that active smokers would injure those around them, especially their family and any infants or young children who would be exposed involuntarily to (smoke in the air).” “...foster an atmosphere where it was perceived....” well, since 1975 they have certainly done that. In fact the goal of the anti smoking movement, listed in the conclusions of the 3rd world conference, was “The elimination of smoking.”

Bit by bit the anti -smoking brigade reduced smoker’s parameters. Tobacco advertising became a ‘no-no’ as the people were slowly brainwashed into believing that SHS was responsible for virtually every death imaginable. Smokers were slowly but surely being demonised by tobacco haters. From advertising tobacco, cigarettes and pipes etc the advertising world has been turned on its head for now we even have children begging ‘mummy’ or ‘daddy’ not to smoke/die on our TV screens at regular intervals, a process they call denormalisation, which in reality is social engineering by a minority who object to tobacco smoke.

Smoker prevalence fell rapidly between the 1950’s and 1970’s, but slowed to a trickle after the re-birth of the anti smoking movement and the open programs of persecution and denormalisation.
S6 MOTORS
STRAY, ABANDONED & NEGLECTED DOGS AND PUPS
Why? Because they cannot abide by the fact that other people might have different lifestyles to what they consider non-smoking Utopia. It has not occurred to them (or they have simply ignored it) that cancers have blossomed along with industrial developments. A simple example is standing behind a bus as it powers away from the bus stop, just how many cigarettes do you think it would take to match the highly dangerous toxic waste emitted from that exhaust pipe? Yet our babies & toddlers are at the exact height of those deadly fumes! Remember Godber, “.....especially their family and any infants or young children who would be exposed involuntarily to (smoke in the air)” Wow!
NEED A CAR? CAN’T GET CREDIT? WE CAN MAKE IT EASY
SHEFFIELD DOG RESCUE
All of this demonstrates, of course, is that the goal of persecuting smokers to the point of total elimination of the product was therefore decided long before the myths of passive smoke harm were established-also that the removal of smokers from society was a moral judgement that had nothing to do with public health. MERCURY AWARDS OUTSTANDING SUCCESS Anyone that has ever organised a show like this one will know that it’s never over till it’s over and success is never assured. The ‘devil is in the detail’ and a great deal of planning and hard work goes into organising these events. Well, having refelected on the evening, and listened to a great deal of feedback, the general concensus appears to be that despite one or two setbacks The Mercury Awards were a success and the evening was hugely enjoyable. Not everything went to plan and there were unavoidable absences. The Manhattans had a long standing commitment to appear in a charity show and on balance it was the right decision to give this priority and credit must go to them. Obviously they were missed, because they are a top act, however their friends and colleagues more than made up for their absence. Glen Dale simply could not be there due
to ill health however his son collected his award on his behalf and Alan Turner was in London. A new act, Duality, were asked to open the show and Lee Lambert and Rebecca Barham performed together and individually creating a high standard and expectation that was maintained throughout the whole evening. The show seemed to gather momentum.
Steph King & Dave Hayes with Best Female Winner Abby Leigh Rowan
The New Chevrons were exceptional and worthy winners and it was only fitting that their agent, Dukeries, should win the inaugural Best Agent category. Thanks must go to them for filling in at the end
the show as well as performing earlier in the evening. Gary Phillips and Mark Lawrence proved beyond doubt that they were worthy winners and Abby Leigh Rowan was simply fantastic. This girl has a great voice and what a pleasure it was to hear her more ‘operatic’ side. Jimmy Carol flew in from Benidorm, flying out to Ibiza at 3am, and put in a storming performance, as good as I’ve ever seen him. One Way, winners again, showed just why they continue to win votes and support with great playing and vocals and also thanks must go to them for the loan of their PA system. The New Chevrons returned to the stage to conclude the evening and by the time they were joined on stage for the final number, a Beatles medley, the whole club was singing along to Hey Jude having had a fabulous night. Thanks to Wadsley Bridge WMC for hosting the event, Dave Fawcett for the sound and lights and Keith Chapman of Cee Bee for the loan of the round table and table cloths. The club was still full at midnight and as the audience made their way home I was thanked by no end of people saying it was the best awards show for years. Thanks again to everyone involved. SORRY GARY, IT’S NOT PERSONAL Sometimes, for no particular reason, something doesn’t quite work out as planned and at The Mercury Awards it happend twice, and to the same person. Firstly, award winner Gary Phillips was left out of the awards programme and secondly I forgot to announce his award on stage. There’s no excuse and we apologise. We adore Gary down here at The Mercury and consider him a good friend so to miss him out, twice, is quite simply inexcusable. To his enormous credit Gary took it in good heart and didn’t make any fuss whatsoever showing what a good bloke he his and a top pro. Thanks again Gary and you showed just why you are a winner with an outstanding performance.

WHAT A NIGHT What can I say? Everything we have mentioned before, paid a fiver, nice venue, top acts full club! Yes, I know it was The Mercury awards last Thursday night at the Wadsley Bridge and some of the acts I voted for didn’t win but who cares, not me, the club was packed. One thing that disappoints me is that artistes or agents (not all as some were there) who didn’t win didn’t turn up to support their fellow colleagues. Admittedly not all the acts were my favourites but these are the acts that we all had the chance to vote for so hey ho next year get people to vote in one way or another . The evening started with a good boy/girlduo two young adults 15/16 year old who are the stars of future clubland or even more if they get the breaks by the name of Duality . We had The New Chevrons who for me got better the more they performed and well deserved winners My old friend, or at least he was until he said for some stupid reason that I was a Wednesdayite, Gary Philips came on stage, let you off this once Gary. I’m not being biased but Gary is the best all rounder on the clubs and if he would have started blubbing when he sang ‘This is my Moment’ at the end of his set I probably would have joined him. Top performance and at one time joined on stage by Marc Lawrence who won best solo male artiste and again a worthy winner. Next, One Way, not my choice for top band but did a superb performance and got a lot of votes and by the response they received had a lot of support in the audience Next the man himself Jimmy Car-

Just had a call from a charity asking me to donate some of my clothes to the starving people of the world. Told them to go away Anyone who fits into my clothes isn’t starving!!! Japanese scientists have now created a digital camera with such a fast speed that it’s now possible to take a photograph of a woman with her mouth shut. Turned on my SatNav and it said ‘Bear Left’ and there was the zoo. How good is that? I hate all this terrorist business. I used to love the days when you could look at an unattended bag on the train or bus and think “ I’m having that!” Paddy is cleaning his rifle and accidentally shoots his wife. He dials 999. Paddy says “It’s my wife, I’ve accidentally shot her. I’ve killed her” Operator “Please calm down sir. Can you first make sure she really is dead?” CLICK,BANG Paddy “OK, done that, what next?
Sunday night was amazing and I don’t suppose that Dronfield was any different to anywhere else. One could hear the cheering and people were dancing tn the streets. What had caused all this excitement? The expulsion of the awful untalented twins from the X Factor. I had vowed to stop watching the programme should they have survived another week. I felt really sorry for judge Louis Walsh having to say, without much conviction, how good they were when they patently were not. Now we are left with a number of very talented contestants who can all sing Just as I was getting over the euphoria of their leaving, the next programme was on, I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here. The magnet of this programme for me is the fact that the general public share my dislike of Katie Price, aka Jordan, and have voted for her to undertake every bushtucker trial, where she has to endure the indignity of coming face to face with the most horrible creatures and having to eat the most repulsive animal body parts. Katie Price is a shrewd woman, and consequently grits her teeth and takes on each task in an effort to ingratiate herself with the British public. She eventually could take no more and walked out. Her much publicised divorce from Peter Andre has shown them both in heir true colours, Peter, a genuine caring father and Katie prepared to do anything to hurt him, including hitting him with his own children. I was however gratified to
see her showing a great deal of humility on her exit, admitting that her behaviour over the past seven months has not been good. She obviously still carries a torch for ex husband Peter Andre. When marriages break down, the welfare of the children is paramount, and they should never be involved in the inevitable war waged by their parents. I, along with about two hundred others attended the funeral of one of Sheffield’s best known characters, Gerald John Scott Mullen, otherwise known as Scotch Gerald or Gerald John. The huge attendance said much about this fabulous character, and I am sure that each of us present had a favourite Gerald John story. God bless Gerald and my deepest sympathy goes out to Janet and all the family The big news in Dronfield is the expulsion of Tory councillor, Daniel Gage for failing to attend council meetings. I find this to be most unfair as Daniel has, to the best of my knowledge, been most industrious during his short term in office, and this expulsion will severely harm his political future. He had been selected by the Conservative party as the man to challenge Lib. Dem leader Nick Clegg for Sheffield Hallam, and having known Daniel for most of his life, (he still calls me Uncle Howard) I am of the opinion that he could well have been successful. I do not propose to go to great lengths about the Mercury Awards night, as I am sure that this will be adequately covered
by Derek Tomlinson, who I was pleased to meet, along with his lovely wife on the night. What I would say however, is that the night was a huge success and the quality of the entertainment was fantastic. Each individual category winner was richly deserved. How refreshing it was to see a large club full to the rafters. I was particularly pleased to have as my special guests the two sons of Glen Dale, David and Lee together with their mother who had come to collect Glen’s Lifetime Achievement Award Glen is not too well at the moment, having got an infection in his stump, which is why he could not be present on the night. Whilst listening to an album of Steve Birks containing all his own compositions, it occurred to me that there were not what I call stupid lyrics prevalent in many popular songs. One of my all time prime examples is in Dave Berry’s smash hit ‘The Crying Game’ which is ‘One Day Soon I’m Going To Tell The Moon About the Crying Game’ What is that all about? I am prepared to offer a bottle of champagne for the best example of looney lyrics sent into the Mercury office between now and the end of the year. A good example is one I herd the other day which was ‘ Wherever You Go, Always Take The Weather, Get your offerings sent to the Mercury office which will be judged by Andrew Platts and possibly win a bottle of champagne for the price of a stamp.
A woman’s perspective to True Love... It was the happiest day of my life. Arrived at the church, husband waiting at the altar, Walked up the aisle, kissed him on the cheek, smiled........ And closed the lid

ON SALE THIS WEEK!
LEONA LEWIS Global Singing Sensation Leona Lewis is to open her first ever UK & Ireland Arena Tour at the Sheffield Arena on Friday 28th May 2010. Tickets, priced £42.40 and £28.50 (subject to booking fee) are scheduled to go on sale 9.30am on Friday 27th November and will be available from the Sheffield Arena ticket hotline on 0114 256 56 56, in person at the venue and online at www.sheffieldarena.co.uk. Hot off the heels of Leona’s first ever concert performance at London’s Hackney Empire, Britain’s most successful female musical export today announces a 10-date arena tour next summer. Speaking about touring Leona said: “I can’t wait to get out on tour and see everyone, I’m really looking forward to putting on a great show. I had such a fun night at my recent show at the Hackney Empire and it’s given me a real taste for it. Over the last few years I’ve had some amazing experiences and sung in some really interesting places but it’s going to be great to be able to perform all my own material on my very own tour. It’s a dream come true.” Earlier this month Leona gave fans an exclusive glimpse of what they might expect next summer when she performed at a special fan-only concert at the Hackney Empire and they were not disappointed! Neither were the press; The Sun reported, ‘A sterling debut from a blistering Brit talent. Bring on the arenas.’ The Daily Mail wrote, ‘Leona hit all the right notes, as a taster for a full UK tour, it was a triumph,’ and The Independent commented, ‘Within moments she’s captivated the crowd with that killer falsetto… it’s Leona’s endearing ascent to fame that’s made her one of the biggestselling artists around the globe.’ Next year’s arena tour promises to be mega! As well as the biggest and most breathtaking voice in music, concertgoers can expect stunning state of the art staging and visual effects as well as choreography and an incredible live band. Leona
will play songs from her smash hit debut album Spirit (such as Bleeding Love, Better In Time and Run) as well as tracks from her forthcoming new studio album Echo, including the brand new single Happy which got it’s UK TV debut on last weekends X Factor and achieved record viewing figures. No stranger to performing live, Leona has given countless performances around the world at some of the most prestigious events on the planet, including Nelson Mandela’s 90th Birthday Concert at Hyde Park and representing Great Britain last year at the closing ceremony of the Beijing Olympics alongside Jimmy Paige and David Beckham. To date though, Leona is yet to tour live, which will make this tour another landmark occasion for the East London girl who leapt to fame in 2006 and has not looked back since. Leona releases her brand new album Echo on November 16th. It is the highly anticipated follow-up to Leona’s 2007 debut album Spirit, which took the world by storm, selling over six million copies globally. Along the way Leona earned herself countless award nominations and became the UK’s biggest selling debut artist of 2007 and 2008. Echo promises big emotions, sweeping and widescreen melodies and spine tingling vocals. The album sees Leona teaming up with A-list writers and producers John Shanks, Max Martin and Ryan Tedder.

The Blur guitarist is back after what must be one of the most successful comebacks in musical history. Blur’s return went mental in the live arena. Selling out 100’000 open air shows! Hyde Parklife in deed! This is pretty obscure, it’s a fairly bluesy one man band kinda approach. It’s very stripped down and basic. It has a late ‘60’s vibe to it and while it’s not really my kind of thing (but neither were Blur) I do prefer it to the Britpop stuff. I don’t think Blur fans will be that keen on the whole though. Artist: Richard Hawley Single: Open Up Your Door Released: Mon 30th November
One of our major Sheffield sons returns, he is a god to us all and should be treated as such! Not only was he recently performing with Dame Shirley Bassey at the proms but Lisa Marie Presley joined him onstage in London and dueted with him and then!!!............... Richard said he wanted to help re-vitalise Presley’s musical career, so now she’s writing and recording an album with him in London!! What da f**k! How amazing is that! (I’m not going overboard here just because I share her surname with my Christian name…………. honestly). It is an amazing story though, Sheffield and Elvis are now linked forever, for all time! This is the second single from his sixth studio album ‘Trueloves Gutter’ and is sublime in every sense. From the first line its beauty sweeps you along onto a journey that you just don’t want to end. It has of course got that slight ‘50’s vibe, Richard’s will always have that, but the music is of such quality that it transcends all genres and ages. It’s timeless. Buy it!

VOICE OF THE NIGHTINGALE WEEK 13
Telephone troubles this week meant that the Ice Hockey commentary looked impossible for a short while on Saturday evening. Again the Sheffield Steelers were at Ice Sheffield which means that we needed to use our broadcasters mobile phone. However we were able to keep the show on air thanks to a last minute sim card loan from our chairman, Phil. Another full match commentary as the Steelers form continues to improve and we were able to bring a 4-1 victory over the Hull Stingrays to the listening patients. We received a donation this week towards upgrade of our studio equipment. Sincere thanks to the John Lewis Partnership who granted Radio Nightingale £200. It’s great to receive grants to buy new equipment to be able to upgrade our facilities as ultimately it leads to improvements in our programmes. But it’s our general running costs of licences,
postage, stationery, etc that are so hard to raise and even small amounts from individuals makes a real difference. We have our ongoing fundraising activities of on-line shopping, search engine and lottery. The on-line shopping centre can be found at www.buy.at/radionightingale where you can use the Radio Nightingale webshop to avoid all the Christmas queues and traffic and search over 5 million products in one place. Plus you’ll be raising money for Radio Nightingale too and it doesn’t cost you anything additional to your purchases. The retailers give a donation from their profits to Radio Nightingale as a result of your shopping. There are over 150 retailers available in the webshop, which should just about cover anything you could need. The search engine is www. everyclick.com where you can register for your searches to contribute to Radio Nightingale. Again there is no cost to you everyclick gives a donation from is monthly advertising profits on a pro-rata basis. So the more clicks Radio Nightingale gets the bigger the donation from everyclick. Our daily lottery is based upon the temperatures in six cities around the world. If your selection of numbers matches the correct sequence of all six num-
bers then you will win the top daily prize of £10,000. There are other prizes for matching 3, 4 and 5 numbers in the correct sequence. The lottery stake is £1 per line, per week, giving you four entries into the draw which is made daily Monday to Thursday. For businesses and organisations there are opportunities to sponsor programmes and advertise in our information booklets which are circulated around the hospital. Finances are tight in the current economic climate and there’s a limited amount of money available to give to charity, but please do support us if you can. Radio Nightingale broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the patients and staff of the Rotherham General Hospital on 945 &1350mw and Hospedia. For more information about the station visit www.radionightingale.org.uk Current volunteer vacancies: • Saturday sports show presenter • Football commentator • Request collector (Tuesday or Wednesday morning) • Fundraiser • MW transmitter engineer • Voice over artist / creator Contact us on 01709 304244 for more information on volunteering.

Plainmoor. The game seemed to be drifting to a 0-0 draw until Ellison pounced following a save by Gulls ‘keeper Michael Poke to put the Millers in front. Then Le Fondre added a second in injury time to send the hearty band of 288 Millers fans delirious and keep Rotherham within touching distance of the top three. Ronnie Moore made two changes to his team following the win at Port Vale. Mark Lynch replaced the injured Dale Tonge at right back and Ryan Taylor came in for Drewe Broughton in attack. In atrocious weather conditions in which both sides had to contend with gales and heavy rain it was the home side who adapted the quickest. On 16 minutes a shot by Tyrone Thompson had Millers ‘keeper Andy Warrington scrambling across his goal line but the ball flew past the post. On 24 minutes the lethal Le Fondre threatened the Gulls defence. A ball forward by Andy Nicholas found the striker in space but after being hampered by the surface water he could only scuff a weak shot goalwards, which was easily saved by Poke. The Millers lost Paul Warne to injury following a challenge by Torquay debutant Adam Smith, giving Stephen Brogan another opportunity to impress. Rotherham came agonisingly close to opening the scoring on 39 minutes after a helping hand from the referee Andy Hall. After a Torquay clearance hit the official the ball re-bounded to Nicky Law. The Millers midfield maestro then fed a pass to Le Fondre whose 20-yard daisy cutter just eluded Poke’s right post.
LOCAL SPORT NEWS
Fondre but the ‘keeper made amends with a brilliant block and then saved the re-bounded strike from Brogan. The home teams’ first chance of the half came on 54 minutes when a 60 yard long ball forward from Mark Ellis found the head of Tim Sills but Warrington was on hand to tip over at full stretch. Just after the hour mark Ronnie Moore gave new signing Gary Roberts his debut with the midfielder coming on to replace Pablo Mills. The Millers had Warrington to thank for keeping the scores level when he made a two terrific saves in the 67th minute. Chris Zebroski crossed for sub Jake Thomson whose shot was smuggled clear and then Nicky Wroe’s centre found Thomson again but his header was well saved by Warrington low down. With six minutes remaining an angled pass by Roberts found the head of Nick Fenton who headed across goal to Le Fondre. His header was saved by the feet of Poke, but the re-bound fell to Ellison who drilled in from close range. Torquay then won a free kick in the 87th minute, right of centre 22 yards out. Wayne Carlisle stepped up and curled his shot goalwards but it crashed against the bar and fell to safety. Rotherham added a second in injury time when sub Tom Pope flicked on for Le Fondre who raced clear of the Gulls defence to loop the ball over Poke and into the net.
Ronnie Moore was full of praise for his ‘keeper Andy Warrington who made several important saves as Rotherham United defeated Torquay 2-0 at Plainmoor. “I think he is the best ‘keeper at this level,” said Moore. “You need your ‘keeper to make saves for you, there will be games when he doesn’t get a touch, and hopefully there is a lot of them to come. “Today was one of them games when football goes out of the window. It was windy, especially in the first half so full marks to the players for hanging in there and doing the right things at the right time. “It is never going to be easy anywhere you go. We knew that they had been on a good run but we have played three away games now and won all of them, so it sets it up nice for the game on Tuesday against Lincoln,” added Moore. Moore made changes to the team from the win at Port Vale last week with Ryan Taylor starting up front and new boy Gary Roberts coming on as a substitute. “We just thought that we could get down the sides of the two tall centre halves who we thought were lacking a bit of pace,” said Moore regarding Taylor’s selection. “The problem was that for it to work we needed to hold the ball and in the first half that didn’t happen. In the second half we needed to start creating chances so that is why we brought Roberts on, and he showed one or two good passes. He (Roberts) has not come to sit on the bench that is for sure. We have got quality with his passing range and that is why I wanted to have a look at him.”

The game marked a milestone for Steeler Brad Cruikshank (pictured), who scored his 100th EIHL career goal, netting the Steelers’ first goal of the game during the first period. A goal from Matt Hubbauer followed at 16:22, and in the second period Steelers’ Captain Jonathan Phillips made it 3-0 to the home team, leaving the Stingrays with a lot of work to do to pull back the game. Less than thirty seconds later, however, the Stingrays pulled a goal back, Sylvain Cloutier finding the back of the net, assisted by Lee Esders and Lee Mitchell. Just three minutes into the third period the Steelers’ lost Brit Jason Hewitt, who was ejected with a 2 + 10 + 20 penalty (roughing, abuse of an official, Game Misconduct) after an incident around the opposition goal. Jeff Legue scored the final goal of the game at 46:06, and though both netminders faced 30 shots a piece it was the Steelers who succeeded in finding the back of the net. Sunday’s game in Newcastle saw the Steelers lose 4-2 to the Vipers, as they were watched by a record 4,128 people following the Vipers “Drive For 5” campaign, which aimed to get 5,000 people attending each of the games held at the Metro
Radio Arena during the Vipers’ final weekend there. They attracted around 7,000 fans over the two games, and Sunday’s gate was a franchise record for the Vipers. The Steelers looked to be continuing their winning ways from the night before as they scored first in Newcastle with a powerplay goal from Joey Talbot with just over a minute on the clock. It wasn’t long before Matus Petricko leveled the scores for the home side with his own powerplay goal in the fourth minute. Brad Cruikshank was ejected for the game (2 + 2 + 10, attempted spearing and Game Misconduct), before the Vipers’ newest signing Mark Rooneem put his team ahead in his second game with the Newcastle side, another powerplay goal at 15:52. It was
the next goal was scored after a goal-less second period, but it was the Vipers who found the back of the net once again with a goal from Jason Tejchma at 47:35. Joey Talbot pulled a goal back for the Steelers with just over five minutes remaining in the game, the fourth powerplay goal of the night, before the Vipers sealed their victory as Matic Kralj scored the final goal of the game at 55:26. This week the Steelers and a large traveling support make the trip to Bolzano, Italy, to take part in the Continental Cup where they will play Bolzano, HDK Maribor and The Hague. The Steelers will next be at home on Sunday December 6th as they take on the Newcastle Vipers at Ice Sheffield. Tickets are available through the Steelers’ office (0114 242 35 35).

OWLS LAUNCH LAWS: ‘SOMEAPPRENTICE- THING TO SHIP SCHEME BUILD ON’
Sheffield Wednesday posted a valuable point from a low-key televised clash with Ipswich Town on Saturday evening. Both sides had chances to claim all three points but the lack of a real cutting edge up front ensured the game would finish goalless. Ipswich survived a clear first half penalty claim and ex-Owl Alan Quinn came close to punishing his former employers after the break but all things considered, a draw was probably the right result. Midfielder Michael Gray returned to the Owls’ starting line-up, replacing hamstring victim and former Ipswich man Tommy Miller, who missed out on a quickfire visit to Portman Road. Other than that one change, Brian Laws fielded the same team that lost 2-1 to QPR last time out, at Hillsborough two weeks ago. Town striker Tamas Priskin had the first sight of goal inside five minutes after taking a delightful through-ball from Grant Leadbitter into his stride but the former Watford striker’s scuffed shot was easily gathered by Lee Grant. The hosts continued to press forward and the first significant action involving a yellow shirt came on nine minutes when an ill-timed challenge by Frank Simek on Carlos Edwards saw the American receive an early booking. Richard Hinds promptly followed suit after a blatant check on Lee Martin that halted an Ipswich breakaway. Jermaine Johnson prodded a shot into the midriff of Asmir Begovic as the Owls began to see more of the ball, before Lewis Buxton became the third Wednesday player to see yellow, for a foul on Priskin, and referee Andy D’Urso was rapidly dominating the first half talking points. D’Urso then denied the Owls a penalty on the half-hour mark when Luke Varney’s flicked header inside the box was diverted by Damien Delaney, who was fortunate to escape a clear handball. Town responded with Martin forcing a diving save by Grant before Wednesday hit back themselves as Marcus Tudgay brought an athletic stop from Begovic. Buxton counted himself lucky not
to see his earlier yellow upgraded to red on 34 minutes after a late scythe on Priskin from behind but fortune on this occasion favoured the visitors. The second period unfolded at a quicker pace and in driving rain, with Leadbitter and Varney spurning chances at either end just minutes into the restart. The Owls, though, were gaining the upper hand, playing with more attacking purpose in particular. Ipswich boss Roy Keane made a double substitution on the hour to inject new life into his team as Gareth McAuley and Quinn came on for another former Owls player, Alex Bruce, and Lee Martin. Laws introduced Leon Clarke, on for Johnson, but the next chance fell to the Tractor Boys, with Grant saving low to his right from Owen Garvan. The pendulum was swinging back in the favour of Ipswich and Quinn burst through on 69 minutes but Grant was swiftly off his line to divert the danger. And Wednesday emerged unscathed seconds later when a frantic goalmouth scramble somehow failed to break the deadlock. Ipswich went close again minutes later when third substitute Jon Stead brought a fine save from Grant. Priskin prodded home the rebound but his strike was rightly ruled out for offside.

LAWS’ QUESTION OF SPORT APPEARANCE
All money raised will go towards the BBC Sheffield Kids’ Scanner Appeal for the Children’s Hospital in Sheffield, and you can be part of this unique event. It takes place at the Pennine Lecture Theatre at Sheffield Hallam University on Thursday, December 10th. Tickets are free but a donation of at least £5 is being requested per ticket. Doors open at 7.30pm for a recording that starts at 8.15pm and the entire show will be broadcast on Radio Sheffield the following weekend, on Sunday December 13th at 1pm. It’s intended that the audience will be an important part of the show. To get your tickets you need to call in to reception at BBC Radio Sheffield. Or write to the
station at 54 Shoreham St, Sheffield with your ticket request, enclosing a stamped addressed envelope. And don’t forget that all important donation. So far BBC Sheffield has raised more than £170,000 for a new CT Scanner, but it needs to hit a target of £500,000 by the end of March next year. Station Editor Hannah Kennedy said: “This promises to be a great night out. We all know about the rivalry between the two managers on the football field, it’ll be interesting to see how they cope on questions of sport. “I’d like to thank them both for giving up their time to take part in this event and hopefully raise a lot of money for our kids’ scanner appeal.”
The steel city of Sheffield has seen some pretty fierce rivalry on the football field - now Kevin Blackwell and Brian Laws are going to play out a battle of the minds. The two managers have agreed to take part in a special charity edition of the long running quiz A Question of Sport, organised by BBC Radio Sheffield. They’ll be joined by Radio Sheffield’s Paul Walker and Seth Bennett, plus two other special sporting guests. Quizmaster will be Look North’s Harry Gration.

Brian Laws came away from Ipswich pleased with a point from a goalless draw on Saturday evening, insisting his players grew stronger for the second half. The Owls held firm at the back but struggled to finish moves which created decent goal scoring opportunities. “I was pleased with the clean sheet and particularly the second half performance because I thought we took a little while to get going,” the Wednesday boss said. “We played with a three-man midfield and the ball was going through our midfield a little too easily in the first half and we were a little bit disjointed. “In the second half we used the ball well and finished the stronger team. We needed a bit of Lady Luck on our side to get a win but I have to be pleased with the defensive aspects of our play in securing a clean sheet. “After 20 minutes I was quite nervous because three of our back four had been booked. Andy D’Urso is very quick at getting his cards out and we had to be disciplined at making sure someone didn’t get sent off in the second half.” Laws was also pleased with the performance of goalkeeper Lee Grant in securing a clean sheet with some notable saves from the likes of Alan Quinn and Grant Leadbitter. “Goalkeepers get you points when your back four get penetrated and that was certainly the case today. I thought Lee Grant pulled off one or two superb saves including the one from Alan Quinn in the second half,” Laws said. “We put in a very workmanlike performance, very solid, very together and we have to build from that. We played 4-3-3 and with three strikers on the pitch you have to be very disciplined. Sometimes when you’ve got three strikers and you’re defending you can be vulnerable but I certainly thought our forwards played their part today. I wanted to go for it; I didn’t come here to get a 0-0 or a draw, I wanted to get a win.” The Owls chief also thought that his side should have been awarded a penalty in the first half when Luke Varney’s flicked header was handled by home defender Damien Delaney. “I thought it was a penalty and you’ve certainly seen them given in that situation. I thought Delaney clearly hand balled it but the referee obviously deemed it ball to hand rather than hand to ball.”
A VIEW FROM THE TERRACE
A Fan’s Weekly Verdict Written by Bunsen Bob
Unregrettably, I missed the Ipswich game due to being in the United States. Presumably, Sky Sports are pushing panic buttons due to the amount of people that have cancelled their sports package after another televised non-event featuring Wednesday. I did, however, get to sample an NFL game and was able to draw comparisons between both versions of football. New York Giants were scheduled to play the Atlanta Falcons at Giants Stadium at 1pm. We arrived at the Stadium at 9am to be confronted by around 20,000 fans drinking, cooking and throwing the old pigskins around. Needless to say my first thought was ‘When in Rome...’ and I proceded to eat, drink and throw like a baby kitten with a broken arm. Admitteldy, home fans only get 8 regular season games a year but they definately make the most of it. Unfortunately, the actual game felt like a nusiance to the partying fans outside. At least 15% of the 80’000 capacity stadium was empty for the first part of the first quarter and the latter part of the forth quarter. Bearing in mind this game went to overtime, I found it hard to understand. I am often annoyed when Wednesday fans leave en masse before the final whistle even when the game is done and dusted but when I left the stadium I was confronted by the prematurely absent fans recommencing their party. Although this was a spectacle (jets flying overhead, national anthems, half-time shows) and an experience I’ll necer forget, the actual game itself was a mere footnote. When the winning field goal flew over the posts in overtime to clinch a must needed win for the Giants a hearty cheer was to be heard. At that point I proudly explained to a native sat next to me that if MY football team would have scored a winner in extra-time throats would be hoarse and saliva would’ve been swapped by grown men who have never met. Long live football....Association Football that is.

UNDER-18S TRIUMPH AT TOWN Sheffield Wednesday Under-18s travelled to Huddersfield Town on Saturday and emerged with a 1-0 victory. Nathan Modest’s first half strike was the difference between the two sides and academy manager, Sean McAuley, was naturally delighted with the result. He said: “I thought we did well in the first half, Nathan Modest scored a good goal. We defended well in the second half but credit has to go to Huddersfield. “They put us under a lot of pressure but we’ve played well in games this season and lost when we should have got more so we’re pleased with this result.”

FOOTBALL - BLADES NEWS - Articles copyright of www.sufc.co.uk
ISSUE 825
BLADES END WINLESS RUN WITH POSH VICTORY United ended the winless a corner, Morgan’s cross was run with a battling and determined display against Peterborough at Bramall Lane. On Help For Heroes day, Henri Camara and Mark Bunn were United’s champions. On his first start for the club, Camara scored the game’s only goal and loan goalkeeper Bunn saved a second half penalty from George Boyd to protect the advantage. Williamson and Camara were handed their first starts as boss Blackwell made a total of four changes for the home encounter with Peterborough. Morgan returned from his one-match ban and Bunn was back in goal. On the bench Taylor and Geary were among seven outfield substitutes. A Blades huddle - a rare occurrence - preceded the kickoff whilst when the action got underway on a slippery surface, due to persistent rain, Camara looked lively. The first notable action at either end arrived on nine minutes when Walker, attacking at pace, appealed for a penalty when he went down under a challenge from Griffiths, but referee Hedley was uninterested. For the visitors, Boyd robbed Harper and fired just wide from 20 yards and then a shot by Whelpdale was just over. United, however, enjoyed much of the territorial advantage and one of the best chance of the half came on 25 minutes. After Quinn’s freekick had been deflected for a corner, Ward’s delivery was pulled back for Evans, who smashed an unstoppable effort - Sheringham-style - off the underside of the crossbar. Soon after, Williamson and Kilgallon had to rush back to snuff out Mackail-Smith when Peterborough were quick to capitalise on a mistake by Walker to breakaway. Also for the visitors McLean fired over and Boyd was giving Walker a severe test, but the Blades were clearly on top and keeping goalkeeper Lewis on his toes. Good work between Quinn, Evans, Camara and Williamson almost worked a chance before the opening goal arrived on 42 minutes. Walker and Ward combined down the right flank and after an Evans shot was blocked by the legs of Lewis, CAMARA was the first to react to blast the loose ball into the net for his first Blades goal. Before the interval there was still time for Camara to have two efforts blocked by the legs of Bennett and after Peterborough had half-cleared
headed just wide by Davies. Peterborough were out early for the second half, working on another warm-up routine before the restart. However, it was the Blades who were quickly out of the blocks and Camara headed over after a good move involving Ward, Evans, Williamson and Walker. The visitors hit back, though, and put the Blades onto the back foot for a spell. An error by Kilgallon led to a deflected McLean shot, which was saved by Bunn. Morgan did well to hold up Mackail-Smith, enabling Bunn to make a good save and then Mackail-Smith headed wide at the near post from a Griffiths cross. None of the chances, however, were as clear-cut as a penalty on 67 minutes. A cute back-heel from McLean gave Mackail-Smith a sight of goal but he was prevented from pulling the trigger by a challenge from Davies, which referee Hegley looked long and hard at before pointing to the spot. The leftfooted Boyd stepped up but his shot to the goalkeeper’s left was pushed out by Bunn and subsequently cleared. Treacy replacing the tiring goalscorer was Blackwell’s first change and although United managed to stem the flow of Peterborough attacks there was an element of nerves around the Lane. As the rain continued to fall, Blackwell replaced Williamson with France and Ward with Reid, whilst Harper failed to connect with a good chance with five minutes to go. Just as four minutes of injury-time was announced United were denied a penalty when the referee thought the combined challenge of Lee and Frecklington on Treacy was not a foul. In the third extra minute there was a scare for the Blades when a shot by Batt rolled wide of the target as Bunn slipped but the home side held on for a moraleboosting success. Blades: Bunn, Morgan, Kilgallon, Evans, Williamson (France 81), Harper, Ward (Reid 85), Davies, Quinn, Walker, Camara (Treacy 69) Unused: Taylor, Little, Geary, Fortune. Peterborough: Lewis, Zakuani, Lee, Frecklington, McLean, Boyd, MackailSmith, Diagouraga (Simpson 88), Whelpdale (Batt 65), Bennett, Griffiths. Unused: Martin, Coutts, McKeown, Rowe, Green.
BLADES MASTERS’ VALIANT EFFORT IN MALAYSIAN CUP On Sunday 22nd November, a Sheffield United Masters squad made up of nine former Blades took centre stage at the indoor facility of Stadium Putra to compete in this year’s EPL Masters Football Malaysia Cup against Liverpool, Manchester United and an All-Star team. The Blades team, backed by partners the GAC Group, Capita Symonds, Welcome to Yorkshire and Macron, were led by Blades Academy Director Ron Reid. The four Masters teams played each other in league format, with the top two qualifying for the Final. The Blades players faced the Premiership All-Star team in the first match. They were up against a side that included Ray Parlour, Ian Walker and Peter Davenport. In a closely fought contest, United lost 3-2. Alan Wright gave United an early lead, but defensive errors resulted in three goals for the All-Star Team. With two minutes left on the clock Tommy Mooney blasted a goal past Ian Walker to narrow the gap. The Blades legends peppered Walker’s box during the final minutes, but the All-Star team managed to hold on to claim a narrow victory. The second game saw the Blades lose to a strong Manchester United Masters team 5-3. Early goals from Andy Cole, Viv Anderson and Jesper Blomquist gave Manchester United a 3-0 lead. Strikes from Tony Agana and Mark Todd marked a Blades fight back, but Manchester United regained a two-goal cushion. The Tony Agana got his second of the game to make it 4-3. In the last minute Mooney missed a great chance to bring the score level, before Clayton Blackmore’s last kick of the game made the final score 5-3. The Blades Team showed a fighting spirit in their last game against Liverpool with goals coming from Agana (two), Mooney and Georges Santos. With Santos controversially sin-binned for two minutes, the final score ended 6-4 to Liverpool. Ron Reid commented: “With the games so tight, naturally we are disappointed not to have recorded a win. However, as a team we felt we gave an excellent account of ourselves against world class opposition. We lost the last two games because we conceded late goals, but this showed you just how close it was. The players are competitive lads, so we would love to come back next year. However, next time we would need more preparation on the training ground as we know we will once again be up against quality opposition.” Manchester United went onto lift the trophy, beating Liverpool on penalties in the final. The tournament was shown to a live TV audience of 80 million people worldwide. Sky Sports will air a Masters Christmas Special featuring the Malaysian Cup. Mike Farnan, executive director of Sheffield United, said: “This was a fantastic opportunity for Sheffield United to be represented at a prestigious global event alongside the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool. This is a perfect reflection that we are a progressive club with a strong international presence and great heritage in football. “The event also gave us an opportunity to work closely with the GAC Group, Capita Symonds, Welcome to Yorkshire and Macron. This level of support demonstrates how the club is moving forward on a global scale and we were delighted to be working with such respectable names on this project.”
BOSS PREDICTS SQUAD CHANGES Kevin Blackwell has indicated that there will be plenty of incoming traffic when the January transfer window opens for business. The United manager has specified that he wants to bring in permanent signings rather than an excessive amount of loanees when he prepares for the second half of the season. “We are trying to get in permanent signings,” stated Blackwell. “Four of the loan lads are due to go back in January and I’m well aware that loan players don’t play so much football and, after the euphoria of the first four or five games wears off, you then have to judge them. “You need the core of your team to be settled, that’s why we are looking for permanents. We can’t solidify with loan players - we want people who we know will be here for a while. “We have looked everywhere for players but it will come down to finance.” Meanwhile, Blackwell has confirmed that David Cotterill is talking to Championship rivals, Swansea City: “It is a little bit early to say what will happen but he has gone down to speak to them.”

A Fan’s Weekly Verdict Written by Jon Warburton
A match made in heaven?
Kevin McCabe’s decision to move Sheffield United’s former chief executive Jason Rockett to a role with a greater focus on the property interests of his global empire was one made with a small amount of fuss. Very little debate or discussion took place regarding what this change might mean for the club’s future, with many fans too busy worrying about on the pitch fortunes than those off it. But this week, it became clear that the post left by Rockett was a consciously created vacancy, to leave room for former Chelsea and Leeds United chief executive Trevor Birch to take on the role at Bramall Lane. A former football player of modest fame, Birch is most notable for his post-playing involvement in two deals that shaped the current existence of English football as we know it.
