council calls on government to save local nightlife One of the sectors hardest hit by the pandemic and its lockdowns has been nightlife, with many businesses facing an uphill battle to bring back their venues and events when restrictions ease. Sheffield City Council has today called on the Government to support the sector so that the city’s much loved pubs, bars and clubs can recover from the financial impact of Covid19, which has seen many businesses forced to remain closed for nearly a year. Sheffield has over a thousand businesses offering a huge range of experiences in the night-time economy, which also includes live music, exhibitions and cinema,
as well as a reputation for hosting many internationally renowned events and festivals, such as Tramlines, Sensoria, MelaninFest, Sheffield Beer Week and Sheffield Doc/Fest. These businesses support nearly 12,000 jobs directly, and many more through the gig economy and their supply chains. Alongside industry partners such as UNIGHT, a not-for-profit organisation that represents Sheffield’s night-time community, and CAMRA (the Campaign for Real Ale) the Council is calling on the Government to put practical support and funding in place to ensure the survival of businesses that play a key role in Sheffield’s
identity and attract residents, visitors, students, and investment to the city. The Council has submitted its proposals to the All-Party Parliamentary Inquiry into the night-time economy. These include: A continuation of the furlough scheme, business rates relief and 5% VAT relief for the rest of 2021 Funds to be allocated to encourage the creation of new businesses and to enable training for new staff entering the sector A national campaign aimed at restoring consumer confidence and encouraging people to continue to spend local when restrictions are lifted
Ensuring a level playing field between pubs, restaurants, takeaways and shops so that pubs have a lifeline during the current lockdown. Nick Simmonite, Chair of UNIGHT said: “So many businesses I work with are on their knees, because of the pandemic. Many will not survive. I hope that Government will listen to those working in the industry, who know and love it and who have worked hard to protect both business and our customers, throughout this unprecedented time. With support, we will bounce back. We are ready to provide the services and experiences that we absolutely know our people are going to want right now.”
01142 244186
Dave Pickersgill, Pub Heritage Officer of CAMRA Sheffield said: “The Government should realise the immense value of pubs to communities, individuals, and the economy – and it should protect them and allow them to trade on a par with restaurants and shops. Pubs are essential to our local economy and we should be doing all we can to support them to survive through these difficult times, not hindering them.” The All-Party Parliamentary Group is calling for evidence from night-time economy businesses, employees, freelancers and consumers to share their views on the challenges facing the sector.

freemasons donate laptops to local school Students from a Sheffield school will now be able to keep up with their studies thanks to City Freemasons. Thanks to a legacy bequeathed to Ivanhoe Lodge by one of its former Masters and his sister, Percy and Mary Parramore, 22 DELL laptop computers have been donated to High Storrs School. These will now be distributed to students who have restricted access to IT in their homes, ensuring that they do not fall behind with their tuition as the Covid-19 lockdown continues. High Storrs School is a mixed secondary school and sixth form college with academy status, located on the south-western outskirts of Sheffield. Over the last five years, trustees of the Parramore Estate have provided much-needed financial support to a number of charities in and around Sheffield. Last year, it gave £20,000 to Support Dogs, which will pay for the two-year specialised training of a Labrador named Ivanhoe, who will ultimately assist an autistic youngster in the Sheffield Region. The laptop computers were presented to Deputy Head Teacher, Christine Gott, by the Lodge’s Master, Geoffrey Flavell. Mr Flavell said: “One of the three great pillars of
Freemasonry is founded in charity, and, thanks to the estate of the late Percy Parramore and his sister, Mary, Ivanhoe Lodge has been able to support a number of local organisations. I’m delighted to say the last of the estate’s funds have been used to purchase 22 laptop computers for needy students attending High Storrs School, who are currently having to do their lessons at home. This technology will be massively supportive and will ensure that they are able to keep up with their studies until such time as they can return to their classrooms. Thanks to Percy, a well-respected, wellliked and highly-valued Past Master of Ivanhoe Lodge, together with his sister Mary, Ivanhoe Lodge has been able to provide financial assistance to some fantastic Sheffield organisations - the good news is that their legacy will live on for many years to come.” John Clague, Ivanhoe Lodge member and Parramore Estate trustee, said: “Percy and Mary Parramore lived on Trap Lane, Bents Green, Sheffield, for most of their lives, which is within a stone’s throw of High Storrs School, hence this very fitting final contribution from their estate. The pair were life-long supporters of local charities, especially those associated with
Freemasonry and Scouting, and when we were asked to administer the estate, we set ourselves a five years’ timescale, which we have now achieved. We shall be forever grateful to Percy and Mary for their generosity and trust they would be well satisfied in not only how we have managed their estate, but in the choice of those who will most benefit from it.” During the Second World War, Percy Parramore was captured as a prisoner of war and detained at various internment camps across Europe. During his internment, he managed to study for a City and Guilds qualification in Electrical Installation and became Editor of the camp magazine - indications of a gregarious and determined individual even under the most awful of circumstances. Most unusually, and in order to supervise the printing of this magazine, he was occasionally allowed out of the camp. Returning home to Sheffield, he joined Ivanhoe Lodge, and also became heavily involved in the Scouting Movement in Sheffield. Mary was a French teacher and taught for some time in Paris. My girlfriend said she’d only marry me if I overcame my ambulance obsession. I can’t wait to get down on one knee nor knee nor knee nor! Alligators can grow up to 20 feet. But most grow four. I got my best friend a fridge for his birthday. I can’t wait to see his face light up when he opens it. My Grandad was a baker in the army. He went in all buns glazing. Saw a lad standing on one leg at an ATM. Confused, I asked him what he was doing... He was just checking his balance. My boss said to me, “you’re the worst train driver ever. How many have you derailed this year?” I said, “I’m not sure; it’s hard to keep track.” Give a man a fish and you will feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will spend hundreds of pounds on equipment he will use twice a year... My uncle drank a whole bottle of wood varnish. He had a horrible death but a lovely finish. I’m having hard time deciding whether I should throw away my old pillow. I think I’ll sleep on it. Where do you learn to make ice cream? Sunday school. TV for sale, £30, volume button doesn’t work... But for that price you can’t turn it down. Just spent £300 on a limousine and discovered that the fee doesn’t include a driver. Can’t believe I’ve spent all that money and I have nothing to chauffeur it.

promoted to funeral director. It was there that I learnt how to arrange and conduct funerals, as well as the correct way to handle and line coffins and how to prepare the deceased for the family to pay their respects. This gave me a full scope of all aspects of the job and after ten years ofservice I was offered the position of manager at a new branch on Abbey Lane, which I accepted, and is now a well-established business. In September 2017 I was offered the opportunity to join the team at Eric Eyre’s and to ‘move back home’, as I say, as I live local to both branches. Your first point of contact will be the person you deal with throughout the process and whether the death has occurred at home, in a hospital or elsewhere, we will guide from the initial arrangement all the way through to directing the funeral. We even provide help following the service, should you need any further support or guidance.” If you need help arranging a funeral for your loved one, contact Eric Eyre Funeral Service.

rovers draw a blank in north east Rovers still go in search of a win at the Stadium of Light as four Charlie Wyke goals ensure Darren Moore’s men suffer defeat in the North East. A combination of Aiden McGeady and Charlie Wyke bore fruit four times as Rovers slipped to consecutive defeats for the first time since October. Wyke’s first-half hat-trick had given Rovers a mountain to climb but an own goal by keeper Lee Burge early in the second half had provided a glimmer of hope before Wyke and McGeady combined for a fourth. A better second 45 saw Rovers win two penalties, but they were unable to convert either and ultimately Sunderland were able to see out the game. Moore made five changes to the side that lost out to Fleetwood Town in midweek with Omar Bogle, Jon Taylor, Madger Gomes, Taylor Richards and Joe Wright all getting starts. Wright was also given the armband in the absence
of Tom Anderson who misses out due to a concussion sustained on Tuesday evening. Wyke gave Sunderland the lead within seven minutes of the start heading in from Aiden McGeady’s corner. It was the home side’s first shot on target after a relatively even start to the match, but Sunderland took charge of the game from that point on and just five minutes later the combination of McGeady and Wyke struck again. McGeady got the better of Brad Halliday down Rovers right and dinked an inviting ball into the box – Wyke was quickest to react and headed beyond Balcombe from close range. Rovers had a better period of play around the twenty-minute mark but - while Richards’ mazy runs were causing the Black Cats some problems - the only time Rovers tested Lee Burge was Richards’ softly hit shot towards the near post. Taylor could and probably should have got one back in this period – Reece James

them a goal when Richards’ effort from the edge of the box came off the post hit Burge on the back which took it in. Hopes of an unlikely comeback were immediately thwarted as the McGeady-cross-Wyke-header combination earned the home side a fourth. A breathless ten minutes of football was to continue when a Sunderland defender went down under the challenge of Richards and – presumably thinking he was to be awarded a free-kick - chose to grab the ball with his hand in his own penalty box. Referee Neil Hair pointed to the spot. Taylor’s effort from 12-yards went down the middle, but it hit the feet of Burge and careened over the crossbar proving it wasn’t to be the no.11’s day. Jason Lokilo – who looked bright after his introduction with fifteen minutes to go – used some trickery to unleash an effort but Burge saved, and he was involved again as he won his side a penalty with just a few minutes remaining. Once again, the penalty was down the middle and once again Burge saved. It was a much improved second half performance from Rovers though Sunderland had no desire to do any more than they were doing and while Rovers were certainly brighter and created more chances than they had in the first - shots from Bogle, James and Bostock were all off target. Darren Moore felt his side made too many basic errors in the defeat to Sunderland in Sky Bet League One. Four goals from Charlie Wyke sealed a 4-1 win for the home side, with Rovers’ consolation coming via a Lee Burge own goal. Moore said: “From our point of view it wasn’t good enough, we started poorly and then gave a soft goal away after getting back into the game. I always felt we would come here and score today, but we couldn’t keep the door shut at the other end due to simple errors.” After back-to-back defeats on the road, Moore says Rovers will go back to the drawing board as they work through a busy schedule in Sky Bet League One. He added: “They’ve scored four headed goals and they could all have been avoided so we’ll go back to the drawing board on Monday. It’s a little bit uncharacteristic from our point of view because we’ve let our standards slip twice now in a matter of days. The only way to rectify that is to work on things on the training ground, and that’s what we’ll do leading into the next few games.” John Bostock believes the defeat at Sunderland was something of a wake-up call in Rovers’ bid to cement their top six spot. They were beaten 4-1 at the Stadium of Light, and Bostock says they struggled to get going in the game. He said: “It was a tough one for us, the first-half performance gave us too much to do and it was a bit of a wake-up call.”

and Cameron John linked up well down the right – with the former Sunderland man’s cross evading everyone and finding Taylor at the back post in time and space but he skewed the shot wide of the mark. Despite better play from Rovers, Sunderland and Wyke were able to get a third just on after the half-hour mark with McGeady once again finding Sunderland’s no.9 free in the box to head home his hat-trick. The striker had looked some way offside but it seemed a mis-communication at the back meant James had dropped back playing him on. The home side could have extended their lead further just before half time with McGeady at the heart of things again. This time, he played a delightful ball into the path of former Rovers loanee Lynden Gooch who was one-on-one with Ellery Balcombe. There was another question of offside, but it didn’t matter as the Brentford-loanee was quick off his line and stuck out a right leg to keep him out. Moore made a change at half-time with Gomes making way for John Bostock and he had a good early involvement linking up with James to get a ball into Richards in the Sunderland box. He was blocked from reaching the ball and while the challenge put him on the floor – he was never going to get the penalty he wanted. More good play afforded Matt Smith an effort which was blocked and better play from Rovers earned

blades earn sixth round tie away to chelsea
The Blades produced a disciplined display to ensure they progressed to the quarterfinals of the Emirates FA Cup with victory over Bristol City. United dominated much of the contest, with the decisive moment coming just after the hour as Billy Sharp converted from the penalty spot after a VAR review decided Alfie Mawson had handled and was red carded for blocking David McGoldrick’s shot. For the last 16 clash Wilder made four changes, with McGoldrick, Sharp, Brewster and Ampadu all returning to the starting XI. Youngster Maguire was named amongst the substitutes where he was joined by fit-again Mousset. The Blades made a positive start and quickly had the visitors on the back foot. McGoldrick had the first sight of goal after a mistake by Vyner and his shot was deflected behind, but a short corner came to nothing. At the other end, Paterson won and whipped in a freekick from the right, it fell to Kalas at the back post, but Ramsdale made a smart save diving away to his left, before Ampadu cleared. The game was an open affair, McGoldrick, Bogle and Brewster were all involved before Lowe found himself in on goal, but despite beating the advancing O’Leay the ball hit the top of the crossbar and went over. Fleck won a freekick in a dangerous area and delivered to the back post, McGoldrick sent a ball across the face of goal, but Paterson engineered contact from Sharp and a foul was given. With the half hour approaching, Sharp got in behind the City defence, he laid off to Ampadu who delivered an excellent cross, but from six yards out Bogle headed straight at O’Leary. The City stopper remained the busiest of the two goalkeepers but was equal to Lundstram’s drive from distance. One minute of added time was indicated by the fourth official and it was the Robins who had the last chance of the half as Moore headed over at the near post from Paterson’s free-kick. Inside the first minute of the second half, Wells broke down the left, but opted to shoot when passing to Williams was probably the better option. United were soon on the attack though, Lowe’s header created space for McGoldrick, but nobody got onto his inviting low cross and Towler cleared at the expense of a corner, from which Diedhiou was fouled as Fleck swung one in from the right. The Blades were pouring in numbers but neither Sharp nor Brewster could get on the end of Lowe’s cross, before McGoldrick drifted an effort wide of O’Leary’s far post. The game exploded into life in the 62nd minute, as Bogle dummied and McGoldrick fired at goal, Mawson blocked before Kalas cleared Lundstram’s follow up effort off the line before the ball was cleared. But following a three-minute stoppage, referee Jones was advised to look at his monitor for a handball by Mawson, he agreed, pointed to the spot and dismissed the City defender, before SHARP fired home into the bottom corner from twelve yards. United’s first change saw scorer Sharp replaced by Norwood, before ten minutes later Burke was introduced, as the Blades looked to kill the game off. The clock was in United’s favour though and the ten-men of City were struggling to find a route back into the contest. Three minutes of added time were indicated and they passed without incident as United deservedly advanced to the last eight, although Burke could have added a second having rounded O’Leary, only for Moore to clear his goal bound shot.

Chey Dunkley says the Owls are focusing on themselves following five home wins on the spin. The defender has proven to be a big voice in the Wednesday dressing room and says all the players have a responsibility to lead the team. Dunkley said: “Leaders don’t have to be the most vocal. “You can lead in different ways, by training well, being a role model, providing a spark in a game. To me, Adam Reach is a leader when he comes up with something special. There’s many leaders here. Some are evident and some are not as clear to the eye, but they are all leaders in different ways.” Dunkley says the team’s focus is on our own performance. The 28-year-old added: “We just focus on ourselves. We can’t think about what others are doing. It’s natural to look after games at what others have done but it’s in our hands. I think we’ve not gone away from what we’ve done all season, working hard and having attention to detail.”

The Millers head to Vitality Stadium, where they will play their first game in eight days, after last Saturday’s game with Queens Park Rangers was postponed due to a frozen pitch at AESSEAL New York Stadium. They have been in promising form of late, having won three of their last five Sky Bet Championship matches, during this time they have found the net nine times and Warne has praised his team’s efforts in front of goal. “We now seem to be taking our chances in front of goal, there hasn’t been many games where we haven’t scored this year, which is really good and we’re a constant goal threat,” Warne said. “We know we’re a tough team to play against and we close teams down really well, I think we’re up there with the best in teams in the league for that. Bournemouth will be a tough opponent, but you start every game with a draw and if we perform to the levels I know we can, we’ll give ourselves a chance of a positive result.” The Cherries were widely fancied at the start of the campaign to make an instant return to the Premier League following relegation last term, therefore, it is no surprise to see them occupying a top six place going into the fixture. Since Jason Tindall’s dismissal from the hotseat, former Real Madrid and Tottenham defender Jonathan Woodgate has taken charge on an interim basis and has seen his side win two of the three games he’s taken, including a victory away at Premier League outfit Burnley. Warne admits with the possibility of a new manager being appointed at any time, it leaves an air of unpredictability ahead of the clash. “Bournemouth are going through a transition with their managerial situation. It’s weird how things work out, sometimes you play a team
boss looking ahead to tricky week
The Owls are back on the road this Tuesday at Stoke as the Championship campaign resumes following Saturday’s Swansea postponement. But the weekend was far from blank as the squad were put through their paces under the watchful eye of caretaker manager Neil Thompson, who said “We’ve been training this morning, we are back in tomorrow and we have a big week ahead of us. We have Stoke on Tuesday and Birmingham on Saturday and that’s a game that could be described as a six-pointer but you can only get three points and that has to be our aim for every game we play. What happens this week will not define our season but the remit is simple, to get as many points as we can between now and the rest of the season.” Stoke are in the midst of an indifferent run of form that has dented their play-off ambitions, culminating in a 4-1 reverse at Norwich at the weekend, but Thompson anticipates nothing but a demanding test at the Britannia Stadium. He explained: “We know the run they’re on but it doesn’t matter, this is the Championship. You only have to look at what happened yesterday, Wycombe are 2-0 down at Huddersfield and turn it around to win 3-2 and suddenly Huddersfield could be looking over their shoulders. What we’ve always wanted to do is drag teams into it but what’s happened recently is other teams have been winning games and we’ve had to be at the top of our form to pick up results and get back into the pack. One or two results went for us yesterday but there’s a long way to go yet with a lot of twists and turns to come. When anyone around you doesn’t get the points they need, you have to try and balance that up by having a good week and we have two big games coming up. We are focusing on ourselves. You can’t rely on anyone else dropping points or doing you a favour, it doesn’t work like that. You expect teams around you to pick up points but we can only control what we’re doing.” with their best players injured. For example, If we’d have played the Cardiff game when it was meant to be played, Sean Morrison and Kieffer Moore would have been out. Now we go to Bournemouth when they are going through a managerial change, we could go there, and it could be someone’s first game in charge, so there could be an element of unpredictability. They’ve got very few weaknesses, they have pace and power on the ball and they can play out from the back. They’ve got outstanding talents attacking-wise and they’ve managed to keep virtually their whole Premier League together from last year..” On the Millers’ team news, he said “There’s a few tired legs and tired minds, but hopefully the sun will be out for training tomorrow and we’ll pick them up again for what is going to a monumental battle. Joe (Mattock) wasn’t on the grass today, we’re just being cautious with him but we’re hopeful he’ll be fit for the weekend. Freddie (Ladapo) is a bit sore in his hip and we’re hoping he can train tomorrow as well but with both of them at the minute, we’re not sure, but more than hopeful they could be available.”
