New measures in response to Omicron variant Last Sunday (12th) the Government announced new measures in response to the rise in cases of the Omicron Covid variant. These measures, known as Plan B, mean that work from home guidance will be reintroduced in England, a Covid pass will be mandatory when entering nightclubs and other venues and face coverings will be mandatory for most indoor venues. From Friday 10 December, face coverings will become compulsory in most public indoor venues. There will be exemptions in venues where

it is not practical to wear one, such as when you are eating, drinking or exercising. Face masks will not be required in hospitality settings. From Monday 13 December, those who can will be advised to work from home. From Wednesday 15 December, and subject to parliamentary approval, the NHS Covid Pass on the NHS App will become mandatory for entry into nightclubs and settings where large crowds gather – including unseated indoor events with 500 or more attendees, unseated outdoor events with 4,000

or more attendees and any event with 10,000 or more attendees. People will be able to demonstrate proof of two vaccine doses via the app. Proof of a negative lateral flow test will also be accepted. Introducing Covid-status certification from next Wednesday will give businesses a week’s notice, as promised in the government’s proposals for introducing mandatory certification published in September. The Red List will also be

looked at too in terms of travel to and from other countries. Parliament will debate all of the measures next week, with a vote expected to take place on Tuesday 14 December. Reviewing the measures The government will keep the data under constant review. The prime minister said that the government will be guided by four key factors, vaccine effectiveness, the severity of Omicron, the speed that it spreads and the rate of hospitalisations. He said that as soon as it

becomes clear that boosters are capable of holding the Omicron variant “then we will be able to move forward as before”. The regulations are set to expire six weeks after implementation, with a review after three weeks. Greg Fell, Director of Public Health in Sheffield, said: “It’s important that these steps are taken given that we have a new variant of concern. We don’t know exactly how transmissible it is or how effective our current vaccines will be, but they don’t change how we tackle

Covid. There is no need to panic, we must just continue to try and limit the spread. We want to go forward not back, so the most important thing to do is get your first or second vaccine if you haven’t already had it. The vaccine has proven stunningly effective and all the evidence so far is suggesting that being fully vaccinated and boosted will keep good protection, so make sure you do this if you can. It’s not too late, there is a vaccine waiting with your name on it “Wear your mask, socially distance where you can and

remember it’s still important to wash your hands and only touch your face with clean hands. If you have symptoms test and isolate until you are given a negative PCR result and if you test positive, make sure you isolate for 10 days to protect everyone around you. “We will keep you informed of any developments here in Sheffield We know this will develop over the coming days and weeks and we will provide further updates.” Covid testing To find out more about

heart of city forges ahead voucher scheme Sheffield City Council says progress on the £470m Heart of the City development is forging ahead as a deal is agreed between the council and John Lewis and Partners, following the decision to close the Barker’s Pool store. The site is intended to play a central role in the development of the city centre, with public consultation on future uses set for the New Year. A report on Heart of the City, which will be presented to the council’s Co-operative Executive committee on 15 December, highlights the rapid advances being made across the scheme, which is set to be completed in 2023, – with 40% of the development already complete and interest from commercial and leisure occupiers gaining significant momentum. Construction on the new Radisson Blu hotel with rooftop bar continues, with completion of the works expected in summer 2023.Alongside the hotel, preliminary work has also begun to revitalise the Gaumont Building, which is set to become a new leisure destination for the city, with a design that incorporates an innovative sustainable green ‘living’ wall. On Pinstone Street, Isaacs Building and Burgess House are the next two major developments set to open in February next year – offering homes and workspace. Around half of the apartments in Burgess House have already been sold, with new commercial tenants expected to move into the 38,000 sq ft of office space available. A deal is also close to being finalised underneath Telephone House, where the positive design changes – including the car park’s new cladding – are expected to result in the leasing of 15,000 sq ft to a leisure tenant – opening in spring 2022. These tenants will join the operators already appointed on the developments on Cambridge Street; Cambridge Street Collective and Leah’s Yard. Cambridge Street Collective will be run by The Milestone Group, who will deliver a food hall and fine-dining venue, and Leah’s Yard will be run by Tom Wolfenden, who manages Sheffield Technology Park, and James O’Hara

CALL 0151 334 2600

of the Rockingham Group. Plans for Leah’s Yard, which will see the creation of a hub for creative businesses and independent retailers, were approved last month with support from Historic England. Both Leah’s Yard and Cambridge Street Collective will open in 2023. The report also confirms agreement has been reached with John Lewis & Partners, following its decision to permanently close the Barker’s Pool department store. The retailer will pay £5m to the council to surrender its current lease and obligations, which was due to continue until 2040. The payment will be used towards the future redevelopment of the site. Councillor Mazher Iqbal, executive member for city futures, development, culture and regeneration, at Sheffield City Council, said: “It’s great news that an agreement has now been reached with John Lewis with no cost impact to the city. We now have full ownership of the Barker’s Pool building and site, and importantly, its future is now in the hands of Sheffield. It is an anchor site within the Heart of the City masterplan, with so much potential and the council is one hundred percent committed to creating something special that the city can be proud of. Earlier this year, we instructed sector experts Fourth Street, Queensberry and Arup, to start to examine the condition of the building, as well analyse the costs, market interest and sustainability of all of the available options for the building. In the New Year we’ll be launching a consultation to find out what the people of Sheffield think about the future of this important site in the city centre and what they’d like to see.” Andrew Davison, project director at Queensberry, added: “Letting interest in Heart of the City continues to accelerate with several key lettings in various buildings across the scheme currently being finalised with details to be shared in the new year. “The retail market is extremely challenging at the moment and is not isolated to Sheffield. National retailers continue to be cautious, with many understandably keen to see completed schemes before committing. However, we are extremely confident the high-quality leisure and commercial occupiers we have secured for the city centre will continue to act as a huge catalyst in attracting exciting new retail brands.”

This week, families with children that are eligible for benefit related free school meals will receive a free £50 voucher to help cover the costs of food and energy over the winter holidays. Those who claim income assessed Early Years Support (2-4yr olds) and young people leaving their care setting (Care Leavers) are also eligible, meaning 29,000 children across Sheffield will receive vital support this winter. Sheffield City Council recognises that many families continue to face financial difficulties because of the pandemic and changes to Universal Credit, with winter holidays being a particularly difficult time due to extra costs for food and energy. The vouchers will be funded through the government’s Household Support Fund set up in October 2021 to help local council’s directly help those who need it most. Families and Care Leavers who are eligible for the voucher will be receiving a letter from the council with more details on how to redeem their voucher this week. Councillor Terry Fox, Leader of Sheffield City Council said: “With the rising cost of food and energy and an uncertain winter ahead, we must continue to support vulnerable families, so I’m pleased to be able to continue this important voucher scheme. I hope it alleviates some of the worries families may have had about how they were going to put enough food on the table and keep their house sufficiently warm during Christmas time when finances are often stretched further than normal. I’d like to remind anyone who is facing financial hardship or is struggling with debt that the council has lots of different support available. Please get in touch if you need to and find out what support is available to you, we are here to help.” To find out more about what support is available such as the Covid-19 Council Tax Hardship Fund and Local Assistance Scheme please visit the council website. FREE COMEDY EVENT at THE LEADMILL WITH SUPPORT FROM LORD MAYOR The Leadmill to host ‘NHS Full House’ comedy event with no-cost tickets for NHS workers and support from The Lord Mayor of Sheffield. Tickets for Good will bring some goodness back to their home city in Sheffield this festive season with a comedy event at world-renowned venue, The Leadmill on 19th December. This event is free for NHS workers with only a small booking fee to pay (£3.50) to secure tickets. NHS Staff can sign-up and apply for these free tickets by visiting https:// ticketsforgood.org/nhs/ Following a conversation with the current Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Gail Smith, Tickets for Good have also pledged an allocation of tickets, with completely no fees attached, to the Lord Mayor’s chosen charities. This includes The Salvation Army, the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Friends of

Hi5s. The Friends of Hi5s are a not for profit charity set up in 2013. They support disabled young people with social activities designed to build confidence with an emphasis on trying new things and having fun. The Right Honourable Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Gail Smith said; ‘In my role as Lord Mayor, I’m meeting some amazing people who have done amazing things before and during the pandemic. It’s so nice to be able to say thankyou to some of these people who have worked so hard during this time. Merry Christmas to you all!’ The Leadmill event will feature comedians Rob Rouse, Allyson June Smith, Pete Selwood and is hosted by Jonathan Mayor. Rob Rouse has ‘comedy guaranteed to lighten even the darkest of moods … always a step ahead of your expectations’ (Edinburgh Evening News) whilst

Allyson June Smith is, ‘One of the funniest comedians I’ve ever worked with’ according to comedy legend Jason Manford. Pete Selwood who recently had his TV debut on ITV’s Emily Atack Show and host Jonathan Mayor is the official tour support for Sarah Milican who describes him as ‘Marvellously wicked!’. Each venue will be filled with NHS workers keen for a night out after a long two years battling coronavirus. With the return of live comedy events dependent on their continued dedication, venues such as The Leadmill are keen to say thanks with a festive goodwill gesture. Emerging comic talent will be joined by familiar favourites for a joyful, restorative night of laughter for the hundreds of NHS staff promised to attend - at no face-value cost. NHS workers nationwide can sign up to access these free tickets and

discounts to major events via Tickets for Good’s NHS-only platform here. Rose Wilcox at Sheffield’s The Leadmill added, “It’s part of the Leadmill’s mission to ensure that Sheffield’s comedy scene is a welcoming place for everyone, so we’re very excited to be creating our first NHS Full House event in partnership with Tickets for Good and the Ticket Fund. Hopefully we can spread some festive joy to NHS

workers and their loved ones, and introduce some of the UK’s best comedic talent to people who might never have visited us before!” ‘NHS Full House’ events are supported by the Ticket Fund, a new project spearheaded by Tickets for Good to encourage businesses of all kinds to support both the NHS and the UK’s world-class live performance industry with fundraising, sponsorship and one-off donations to

put towards tickets for NHS workers to attend high-profile events. With more than £10,000 already raised by WeGotTickets https://www. wegottickets.com/ customers alone via checkout donations, it’s hoped that the flagship Christmas gigs will showcase the tangible positive

impact of live events on NHS teams’ mental wellbeing after a tough time.

Follow Your Local Team Every Week In The Mercury PERFORMANCE OF THE SEASON SWFC CLUB STATEMENT Barry Bannan believes the 2-0 win over Crewe on Saturday was arguably our best performance of the season. The captain himself set the ball rolling for Wednesday with a sublime solo goal before Lee Gregory doubled the lead in the second half. In between the goals was a remarkable piece of goalkeeping as Bailey Peacock-Farrell was yet again the penalty hero, saving Chris Porter’s spot kick and rebound in spectacular fashion just before the break. In the post-match interview pitchside at the Mornflake Stadium, Bannan said: “We said after a good point at Portsmouth on Tuesday night that we needed to come and capitalise on it and get three points today. “Obviously we would have liked to win against Portsmouth but in the end it was a good battling point with ten men at a tough place to go.

“It was important today that we came and took all three points and backed it up and I thought throughout the game we were comfortable and probably was one of our best performances of the season so far.” On his goal, the skipper continued: “I’ve been lucky to score a few good ones but that was a big goal. “We knew we needed to get out of the traps quick and we started on the front foot. “It’s the three points that is most important. I’m happy to score, I want to score more goals and I’ve touched on that this season. “Every time I can chip in with a goal, that’s good but most important is the three points and the performance and I thought we were brilliant.” The penalty was awarded to Crewe after the ball struck the arm of Bannan from Scott Robertson’s fierce drive. Discussing the penalty

and Peacock-Farrell’s heroics, the skipper added: “It’s a hard one, my instant reaction wasn’t ‘I’m in trouble here.’ Normally in those situations, if you have done something wrong you are a bit worried but I wasn’t worried at all. “It’s difficult, I was close to the player who kicked

it and I’ve not seen it back so, if it was a penalty, it’s a penalty luckily we’ve got a goalie who saves penalties! “It was a great save and Bailey has been brilliant, he has shown his character. Man of the Match on Tuesday and when you need him today, he produces a great double save at an

important point in the game. “We are moving along alright, we are moving along unnoticed which is good. “We want to be number one, we’ve said it all season and I’m still confident, I’ll put my cards on the table, I think we can get promoted.”

Sheffield Wednesday are reminding supporters of their conduct at all fixtures following unacceptable scenes during our game against Crewe on Saturday. Numerous visiting supporters invaded the field of play at Gresty Road whilst celebrating goals. This behaviour is fundamentally against the law and contrary to ground regulations at every stadium in the country. These actions are also unsafe, and more so in the current climate. Midfielder Sander Berge is looking to be involved in the upcoming busy Christmas period as he continues to work his way back into United’s starting eleven. The Norwegian has endured a frustrating season with injury and illness restricting his firstteam opportunities. But talking recently to UTB - United’s official matchday programme Sander is looking ahead to the busy run of games where squads are usually

used to the full with four games in quick succession over Christmas and New Year. He told UTB: “It’s just been nice to be back, and good to get on the field against Bristol City. “It has been hugely frustrating for me personally; I’m fit and raring to go now and I’m desperate to get back into the action. “There’s a lot of games coming up and it’s so exciting. I’ve heard, seen and read a lot about it and

I can’t wait to hopefully be involved. “I missed the Christmas period last season through injury, so it promises to be so exciting, hopefully we can maintain this unbeaten run into those fixtures and keep making a dent into the play-off places turning into 2022. “Our aim since the summer has been winning promotion and despite where we’ve found ourselves that has never really changed.”

United’s Emirates FA Cup third round encounter against Wolves is one of 16 ties that will be

broadcast overseas. Subsequently, the game at Molineux will take place on Sunday 9th January

2022, kick-off 2pm. Ticket details for the fixture will be announced in due course.

Charities benefit

Following the suspension of the Blades home fixture against QPR, scheduled to be played at Bramall Lane on Monday 13th December, United are pleased confirm the surplus food has not been wasted. Alongside their catering partners, the club have been able to contact two Sheffield-based charities to arrange the donation of food that was purchased and prepared to feed matchday staff, supporters and guests. To avoid any unnecessary waste, they are delighted to have been able to share this with two great local charities; Roundabout and Nomad. This food will now go to support those who need it most at this difficult time. United’s head of operations, Dave McCarthy, commented: “Although we as a club are desperately disappointed not to be hosting QPR, we are really pleased that the unused food can go to two great local causes.”

Jack Hunt included in Team of the Week

Jack Hunt earned a spot in the League One Team of the Week following his performance in our 2-0 win over Crewe on Saturday. In all competitions this season, Hunt has made 24 appearances for the Owls and turned in another fine performance at the Mornflake Stadium. Wednesday’s unbeaten run now stands at an impressive 12 games after a stunning solo goal from Barry Bannan and a Lee Gregory second half header, assisted by Hunt, bagged the Owls a deserved three points at Crewe. The League One Team of the Week is compiled based on player ratings from whoscored.com, with Hunt scoring 7.8/10.

Paul Warne credited his side putting their bodies on the line - particularly in the second half - as his side recorded a 3-1 win against Burton Albion to extend their unbeaten run to 20 games in all competitions... “If ever there was a game that was a game of two halves, it was today. “I thought first half we were pretty scintillating and obviously allowed one chance on our goal, but apart from that I honestly thought we could have had four or five goals - we missed some gilt-edged chances. “We started the second half pretty well because we scored straight away with the ball slipped through to Freddie, but after that, I thought it was all Burton for 43 minutes. “They asked no end of questions and they were losing so they had to go for it quite obviously and we had to defend resolutely. “We just didn’t get going second half. “What was good about us first half was that we were holding it up top and we were winning second balls and getting the ball out wide, which we just didn’t do second half. “In the end the third goal takes the pressure off us, although it was possibly undeserved from our play in the second half. “We didn’t defend crosses well enough but we did put our bodies on the line in the middle of the box. “On another day in another season, we might have lost that but the lads have got a real confidence.”

Gary McSheffreywas proud of the fight his players put up to beat Shrewsbury Town. Joseph Olowu’s late header from Branden Horton’s corner was the difference as Rovers claimed a vital three points against the Shrews.

On the togetherness his squad showed: “We rode our luck a bit in the second half when they created better chances, but Louis Jones pulled off some unbelievable saves. “We were the better team on the day. We played some good stuff and I asked them at half-time to up the intensity and take the handbrake off. “I thought we played winning football once we got

It isn’t too late to donate to the Rotherham Christmas Toy Appeal at Parkgate Shopping Rotherham United would like to remind our supporters of the efforts of long-standing club partners Parkgate Shopping on the Rotherham Christmas Toy Appeal front as the big day draws ever closer. Last Christmas with the support of Rotherham people, the Rotherham Christmas Toy Appeal managed to reach and provide presents for over 1,700 children within the Rotherham area. The Millers were once again involved with the Toy Appeal’s launch ahead of the festive period with boss Paul Warne turning out to help kick off the 2021 event at Parkgate Shopping alongside representation from RB1 Radio and local schools. If you would like to get involved you can pick up a small gift tag from the trees on Parkgate Shopping Centre and purchase a gift from any of the stores on Parkgate Shopping - the gifts can be left in any of the stores up to mid-December. You can also drop off gifts at Voluntary Action Rotherham reception. Please do not wrap any gifts as wrapping paper is provided so that parents/carers can wrap them. (The appeal prefers parents/carers to wrap the presents and to claim them as though they had purchased them themselves). We would like to thank you in advance for your kindness and generosity. The decision making from the lads was really good and I thought they deserved the win. “You can see how much it means to the lads when they scored. The togetherness was there for all to see. The lads deserved that today.” On Louis Jones and Branden Horton’s continuing impressive displays: “Branden was effective today in all areas. He got us up the pitch. “He is young and there is still plenty to come from him. For him to be producing the numbers he is now from left back shows what a bright future he has. “Louis’ confidence is high, and he put in a great performance. He showed real maturity and mental strength to get over that tough period for him, and he’s keeping the shirt at the moment.” On how much of a difficult test Shrewsbury were: “Shrewsbury are hard workers. We saw how hard they worked against Wigan in midweek, so I think that took a lot of energy out of them. “We stopped them from playing and we kept mixing it up. We controlled the game in midfield and got to play out from the back for a bit.”
