Covid memorial: Gathering ‘Stories from the Pandemic’ Sheffield is creating unique, long-lasting, and creative memorials as a tribute to those who have died from Covid, those who have lost loved ones and those who have been affected by the pandemic. Our city, like those around the world, has been deeply affected by the impact of Covid-19, and in Sheffield we want to pay a meaningful tribute to those who have lost their lives, those who have worked above and beyond to keep people as safe as possible and those who have been affected by Covid. Memorial activity in Shef-
field is focusing on a memorial archive, local memorial activity, and a centralised memorial, which will be in place in the city centre by Spring 2023. The key focus of these plans is to make sure that Sheffield residents, community and voluntary groups and city organisations have a tribute of which they can be proud. Community and voluntary groups and city organisations are already involved in the first phase of the memorial activity, ‘Stories from the Pandemic’, which launches to residents tomorrow by inviting them to share their stories and ex-

periences about Covid-19. Everyone across the city will have the opportunity to shared their stories either at https://www.sheffieldstoriesfromthepandemic. com/ or on postcards which will be available in libraries, museums and other city venues. A list of participating venues will be published on the ‘Stories from the Pandemic’ website. The postcards have been designed to encourage people to share their stories, thoughts, or experiences about something small that made a big difference, something they are thankful for, a significant
moment, something they have learned or about their feelings of loss. Councillor Terry Fox, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “Everyone has a story or experience to share about Covid and its impact. So many people need compassion and support because of what they experienced during Covid, and we recognise that to share those deeply sad memories for this memorial archive is too painful. We know too, that others will benefit from talking about their experiences and telling their stories and we hope that they will note them
down in their own words so that their story will always be there to inspire and encourage others. Covid was difficult for everyone in all sorts of ways, but for some people its effects will last a lifetime.” This first phase of the overall planned memorial activity will inform plans for community memorials and the central memorial. Linked with the memorial activity is the work of www. compassionate-sheffield. co.uk which is connecting and supporting people, communities, and organisations to harness the power of compassion.

Residents asked to submit urgent feedback on two Levelling up bids! Building on previous Masterplan consultation exercises, residents in Doncaster are being asked to give feedback on two bid proposals which are being prepared to be submitted to Central Government. Doncaster Council are preparing to apply for Levelling Up funding for the Doncaster North and Don Valley constituencies – with areas such as Mexborough, Moorends, Brodsworth Miners Welfare Institute (Woodlands) and Edlington set to be part of the respective bids. Residents from those areas in particular are being asked to provide feedback. The consultation on the proposed plans will run from the 8th June – 27th June with all feedback then considered ahead of submitting both applications to the Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities on 6th July. If the bids are successful, the funding will be used to invest in areas such as the Royal Estate in Edlington and to build a brand new leisure centre in Edlington. Ros Jones, Mayor of Doncaster said: “As demonstrated in previous Levelling Up bids, we know this will be a highly competitive process. To give us the best possible chance of attaining the funding which will allow us to pursue exciting plans such as building a brand new leisure centre in Edlington, and supporting further regeneration across Doncaster, we need to hear from as many residents as possible.
“The city of Doncaster is a place of places, it is vital that we support and encourage the regeneration of our principle towns. Our LUF2 bid for Doncaster North includes investment in Mexborough, Moorends and Brodsworth Miners Welfare. “Our LUF2 bid for Don Valley will focus on Edlington, with a focus on a new Leisure Centre, improving the main shopping area and tackling some of the issues around the Royal Estate. “The MP’s for Doncaster North and Don Valley are supportive of our bids for their respective constituencies, I call on all our MP’s to lobby and support our Levelling Up Fund bids for Doncaster. “This is an exciting time for development in Doncaster and we don’t want to stop now – help us develop these plans so that we can provide Central Government with the best and most detailed proposals; after all, it is only the residents themselves that can truly tell us the details of their areas.”
The consultation website is now live and can be accessed via this link - levellingupdoncaster. commonplace.is/ . Further information and details on the plans can be found on the linked website or via the Council or CommonPlace social media pages. The two applications will be considered as part of the Government’s second round of Levelling Up funding, with a decision expected in Autumn 2022. Doncaster Central constituency was awarded £18.6m following the first round of Levelling Up Fund late last year, which concentrated on projects such as transforming the Waterfront, regenerating the Market Place and developing the civic and cultural quarter. ABC CELEBRATE ‘LEXICON OF LOVE’ ANNIVERSARY
To celebrate 40 years since the release of their lauded and timeless debut album “The Lexicon of Love,” ABC will perform the iconic album in its entirety across 10 dates in June 2022, including a pit stop back to where it all began. Sheffield’s finest ABC will return to their hometown, the steel city, for a very special anniversary show which will mark exactly 40 years to the day since the album was released on the 21st June 1982. Martin Fry’s masterpiece ‘The Lexicon Of Love’ went straight to number one upon release. Fusing dance floor finesse with a postpunk attitude, the album spawned timeless tracks such ‘Poison Arrow’, ‘The Look Of Love’ ‘Tears Are
Not Enough’, and ‘All Of My Heart’. The album saw ABC enchant the world with their own unique brand of pop and remains one of the best albums of all time. ABC fronted by Martin Fry were formed in Sheffield in the 1980’s when they decided they wanted to fuse the world of disco funk with their own unique post punk vision. ABC’s debut album ‘The Lexicon Of Love’ (‘82) went to No 1 and sold over a million records. To date ABC have released 9 studio albums: ‘The Lexicon Of Love’ (’82), ‘Beauty Stab’ (’83), ‘How To Be A Zillionaire’ (’85), ‘Alphabet City’ (’87), ‘Up’ (’89), ‘Abracadabra’ (’91), ‘Skyscraping’ (’97) and ‘Traffic’ (’08). A mere 36 years since the release of their landmark debut
album ABC returned with their resounding triumph “The Lexicon Of Love II’ which immediately entered into the top 5. Worldwide hits and six studio albums later; ABC demonstrate that even now 40 years on from ‘The Lexicon Of Love’, Martin Fry’s song-writing and musicianship is still as contemporary as it was in the beginning. ABC will be joined by the Southbank Sinfonia and longtime collaborator Anne Dudley who will conduct the evening.

meningitis cases on the rise scleroderma advice for schools The charity Meningitis Now says it is concerned that cases of meningitis are on the rise again, especially among young people, after historic lows during the COVID19 pandemic. The latest figures, just released by the UK Health Security Agency for the period between October and December last year, show 65 confirmed cases of meningococcal meningitis and septicaemia (invasive meningococcal disease). This compares with 19 cases for the same period the previous year. Whilst this is still well below pre-pandemic levels (185 cases for this period in 2019) the charity is concerned that the number of cases, in particular of MenB, is rising and will continue to do so. Meningitis Now chief executive Dr Tom Nutt said: “We always feared that cases of invasive meningococcal disease would start to rise again from the historically low figures we saw during the pandemic as people – particularly young people – began to lead more normal lives and mix and socialise again.” The latest figures for England show that of the 65 confirmed cases in the period MenB accounted for 57 of these – 88 per
cent. There were three cases of MenW, with one occurring in the 20 to 24 age group. Overall, there were 14 cases in children aged under 5 and all but one of these were MenB. There was a total of 29 cases in the 15 to 19 age group, with 26 due to MenB. Tom added: “A worrying aspect of these latest figures is the number of MenB cases in teenagers. Although most teenagers will be vaccinated for MenACWY, this will not protect them against MenB. These latest figures bear that out and while overall numbers are still well below pre-pandemic levels, the significant growth in the number of cases is concerning, with nearly half of all recorded cases affecting children and teenagers.” Meningitis is inflammation of the membranes that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord, usually caused by bacteria or viruses. The bacteria that cause meningitis can also cause septicaemia. The early signs and symptoms can be similar to flu and include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting and muscle pain. More specific signs include fever with cold hands and feet, drowsiness, confusion, pale blotchy

skin, stiff neck, dislike of bright lights and a rash which doesn’t fade under pressure. The rash can be a late sign and may not appear. Meningitis Now advice is not to wait for a rash before seeking medical advice. Tom added: “Every day we hear of new cases and the heartbreak they can cause. These latest figures just spur us on to greater efforts as we work towards our vision – where no one dies from this disease and everyone affected gets the support they need. It’s vital that as well as keeping up to date with vaccinations people also take five minutes to learn the signs and symptoms of meningitis and seek urgent medical advice if the disease is suspected – we know early diagnosis and treatment improve outcomes. And it could help save someone’s life.” If meningitis is suspected seek urgent medical help by contacting your GP or calling 111. In an emergency dial 999. Someone with meningitis or septicaemia can get worse very quickly, so keep checking them. Meningitis Now funds research into vaccines and prevention, raises awareness so people know what to look for and what action to take if they suspect meningitis and rebuilds futures by providing dedicated support to people living with the impact of the disease. Alison Grunwell, a mum of three from Doncaster whose two youngest daughters have an autoimmune condition – scleroderma – that causes their skin to become hard and stiff, has worked with the charity Scleroderma and Raynaud’s UK (SRUK) to produce guidance to help schools support others with the condition. Scleroderma affects around 19,000 people in the UK and occurs when the body’s immune system becomes overactive and begins to attack healthy tissue. This causes the skin to harden and, in some cases, other organs. It also causes scarring, which can affect parts of the body from functioning properly. Alison’s daughters – Eliza, 12, and nine-year-old Eleanor – both have a ‘localised’ form of the condition, which means only the skin is affected. Eliza was diagnosed shortly before starting primary school in 2014. She says the condition has had a big impact on her time at school, especially in the beginning. Alison explains: “We had to miss quite a bit of school to go to appointments and Eliza was given strong medication, including steroids, which made her feel tired and ill, so she needed more time off because of that.” Eliza’s now at secondary school and typically misses one day every three months to see her consultant. Eliza has a tendency not to ask for help at school if she’s struggling, but she’s had to speak to her school’s pastoral team so that they could keep an eye

on her when she’s feeling tired or in pain,” Alison says. Eleanor was diagnosed in 2018 after Alison noticed a patch of skin on her ankle that looked similar to Eliza’s. She is currently taking the same medication as her sister. Alison continues: “Eleanor struggles with hospital appointments, blood tests and taking her medication. She has autism and sensory processing disorder as well as scleroderma, so she finds these things more challenging than others might. When Eleanor started a new school in January, they knew she had scleroderma but had never heard of it before. If schools don’t know about scleroderma, how can children get the support they need to thrive in that environment?” To help teachers and other school staff understand and support other students with scleroderma, Alison has worked with SRUK to produce an informative guide. The guidance - ‘Scleroderma: A Guide for Schools’ focuses on how schools can support students with scleroderma and covers what the condition is, how a student can be affected and schools’ legal obligations. The guidance also includes information about reasonable adjustments to help students thrive, including ways to: • make tasks that require fine motor skills easier • ensure students can speak to someone if
they are struggling emotionally • help students tackle pain and stiffness in their joints • speak to other children and young people to educate them about the conditions to promote understanding and awareness Alison says she hopes the guidance will help schools across the UK to understand what scleroderma is and the impact it can have on children’s emotional and physical wellbeing. Sue Farrington, SRUK Chief Executive, said: “We’re so thankful to Alison for helping us develop this guidance for schools. Scleroderma is a relatively rare condition, so awareness is often low. For children, the condition often means symptoms that can be painful, time off school for numerous medical appointments and treatments that can make you feel tired or unwell. Many can feel selfconscious, affecting their mental health. We hope this guidance will go a long way towards helping all schools understand the challenges associated with scleroderma and how they can help make school an enjoyable and inclusive experience for everyone.“ The guidance – ‘Scleroderma: A Guide for Schools’ - is available to download from the SRUK website, www.sruk. co.uk, or to order via 020 3893 5998 or info@sruk. co.uk

defibrillator register Tesco has become the UK’s first supermarket to begin registering its defibrillators to a new national database that could improve cardiac arrest survival rates in the UK. With 137 registered defibrillators in Tesco stores across Yorkshire and the Humber, the supermarket has now registered over 2,000 in total across the UK. The database, called The Circuit: the national defibrillator network, aims to map all defibrillators in locations such as supermarkets, train stations and offices, allowing ambulance services to direct bystanders to the nearest registered defibrillator in an emergency. There are more than 30,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests every year in the UK, but fewer than one in 10 people survive. This is partly because defibrillators are used in less than 10 per cent of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests, with ambulance services often unaware of where they are located. To help improve these stark survival rates, Tesco is in the process of registering its defibrillators in stores onto The Circuit. This means that if somebody is having a cardiac arrest
in or around a Tesco store, the ambulance service will be able to direct 999 callers to the nearest defibrillator registered on The Circuit. Dr Charmaine Griffiths, Chief Executive of the British Heart Foundation, said: “We’re thrilled that Tesco are registering all their defibrillators on The Circuit – this could help save lives in the years to come. By ensuring defibrillators are visible to ambulance services in the ultimate medical emergency, Tesco is providing an invaluable service to communities across the UK. By registering their defibrillators on The Circuit, Tesco will be joining the fight to improve survival rates. Currently, less than 10% of people survive an outof-hospital cardiac arrest in the UK, and every minute without CPR and defibrillation can reduce the chances of survival by up to 10%, so every second counts when someone has a cardiac arrest. We are now urging all organisations that own defibrillators, whether it’s just the one or several, to follow in Tesco’s footsteps by registering them on The Circuit. This simple action could save lives.”

“Make mine a pint!” Together in the Square CAMRA tells Government as they look to change weights and measures laws. The Campaign for Real Ale is asking the Government to use the return of the Crown mark and forthcoming changes to weights and measures legislation to ensure consumers always get a full pint of beer. The Campaign for Real Ale is arguing that return of the Crown mark on pint glasses should be matched with a change in the law to make sure drinkers always get a full pint of beer at the bar. Whilst
the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy acknowledges that “the Crown stamp gave customers confidence that they were not being sold a short measure of beer”, CAMRA wants the Government to use a recently announced consultation on changing the law on weights and measures – together with the reintroduction of the Crown mark – to make sure pub goers have a legal right to receive a pint that is 100% liquid. At the moment a pint of beer isn’t defined in law as 100% liquid meaning consumers
could be short-changed every time they buy a pint – and don’t have any recourse if a top-up is refused. Reacting to the announcement on changing weights and measures laws, Nik Antona, CAMRA Chairman said: “The Jubilee Bank Holiday was a brilliant success for pubs and social clubs across the UK, and it was great to see a decisive statement from the Government on fairness for consumers. However, while the Crown mark is a flagship signifier of the nation’s favourite drink, it isn’t enough to guarantee a full pint on
its own. “CAMRA has been calling for a pint of beer to be legally defined as 100% liquid for many years, to ensure that consumers are not short-changed at the bar. The Government now have a fantastic opportunity to give consumers the right to a full pint – defined as 100% liquid – as part of the new consultation on weights and measures. “There is no better way to top off a fantastic weekend of celebrations than ensuring that consumers get what they pay for when they’re at the bar.”
Join Sheffield Theatres, supported by The University of Sheffield and Yellow Bus Events, as they return to Tudor Square with another outdoor weekend of free events. Together in the Square 2022 will take place on Saturday 9 & Sunday 10 July, transforming Tudor Square into a fun festival space with events including street acts, music, poetry and theatre. On Saturday 9 July, performances, curated by the creative teams at Sheffield Theatres will run from 11am – 7pm and on Sunday 10 July from 11am – 4pm. This year’s Together in
the Square will mark Sheffield Theatres’ participation in the city-wide series of cultural events celebrating the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022, of which Sheffield and Rotherham will be host to matches
in the tournament from Wednesday 6 to Sunday 31 July. Alongside other creative events happening across the city, Sheffield Theatres will celebrate the history of football in Sheffield.
All performances at Together in the Square will be free with unallocated seating on Tudor Square. Full line-up and programme of FREE entertainment will be announced nearer the time of the event.

Palmer set to reach 100k milestone! MILLERS RESTRUCTURE MEDICAL DEPARTMENT Liam Palmer is set to complete the first 100 kilometres of his 10k a day challenge raising money for Jude Mellon-Jameson. The Owls defender will hit the target on Friday 10 June, as his fundraising now surpasses £3,000. Liam spoke this week about his decision to take on the challenge in support of three-yearold Jude - son of former Wednesday teammate Arron Jameson - who is undergoing treatment for neuroblastoma, a rare form of cancer. The 30-year-old said: “I’d seen Jude’s story and followed it for a while and wanted to do something to raise awareness and help raise some money if I could. “I think it was the last day in May and I said to my wife ‘I’ll do 10k every day in June’, and she said ‘yes, go for it.’ “I spoke to some friends
who run quite a bit, because my initial idea was 20k a day, but I’m glad I shaved half of that off! “I probably slightly underestimated the length of a 10k, I’m used to a style of running that allows you to take a breather if the ball goes out of play, when there’s a set piece and even during half time. But in a 10k, it’s more of a mental game.” Liam began running in the UK before heading on a family holiday, but this has not disturbed his progress as he continues to complete his challenge overseas. The Owls academy product added: “I think with going on holiday it’s gone quite quickly, so far. “The change in climate goes without saying, I go early in the morning or late at night and obviously I’m trying to juggle having three

kids on holiday as well! I don’t want to make too much disruption for them so I try and run before they get up and then we can start the day. “I’m enjoying it so far, I’m enjoying the different routes and the people you meet along the way. I’ve had a couple of people kind enough to capture some footage for my TikToks and Instagram.” Liam is posting a daily video diary on the aforementioned social media channels so supporters can keep tabs on his progress and share the clips to help raise further awareness. He added: “I’ve never had so many nice messages, not just for me but for Jude as well. I’ve had it from fans of different clubs as well and that’s the nice side of it. “The daily diary is just a bit of background as

to where I’m running, what I’m seeing and how much I’m sweating! It’s just to keep momentum up for the fundraising. “I set £1,000 as an initial target and we surpassed that after day two, so that was amazing to see! “Even if you can’t donate, as I know times are extremely tough at the minute with the cost of living, a share on social media is amazing to help raise awareness for Jude’s story as you never know who might see it. “I’ve had a lot of messages from people asking if they can run the 10ks with me when I’m back in the country so hopefully I can fit in some special guests to help me along. It’s great to see that people want to get involved.” On Thursday 30 June, Liam’s challenge will reach its climax and the

He added: “I’ve got it in my head that on 30 June, everybody who wants to join in or show support can come down to Hillsborough Park for my final 10k. “Hopefully, the sun will be shining and the ice cream van will be around, so everyone can come down and get behind it. “Arron, Lucy and Jude will be there too, so it’ll be a real celebration to finish the challenge. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone who has supported me along the way.” To support Liam’s challenge and help young Jude, please visit www. solvingkidscancer. org.uk/fundraisers/ liampalmer

The shirt worn by the likes of Colin Morris, Keith Edwards and Bob Hatton is synonymous with an era of Blades fans that remember the penultimate match of the 81/82 season in which United travelled to Darlington with the aim of being crowned division 4 Champions. Rotherham United boss Paul Warne has confirmed that the club’s Sports Science and Medical Department has undergone a summer restructure which also prompts the arrival of a new Senior Performance Coach in Brent Dickinson, who joins from Nottingham Forest. Following Ross Burbeary’s departure for Lincoln City at the back end of the 2021/22 campaign, work has been taking place behind-thescenes at Roundwood to reshuffle a department which has improved year-upon-year at the club’s training base and the Millers manager admits he is pleased with how it is shaping up ahead of the Sky Bet Championship season. Alongside welcoming an experienced operator in Brent from the City Ground, there has been
an internal promotion for the previously-titled Head of Medical Stephen Gilpin, who will now head up the provision. Gilpin has become one of the manager’s trusted charges – having worked closely with him across two spells either side of a stint with Hull City – and is an individual who not only understands and embraces the culture at Rotherham United, but has ambitions of further developing the club offthe-field. “He’s going to be a really good addition for us,” the Millers boss said of the arrival of Brent Dickinson. “I’m really pleased that we’ve been able to convince him to come and obviously his last days at Nottingham Forest were spent getting promoted to the Premier League.” “He’s a good bloke and a local lad. “He’s been on our staff

us to drive that culture, set the example and raise the bar.” “He’s robust. We’re lucky to have someone of his calibre and with that attitude. “He will rub off on younger players and it’s a real coup to tie him down.” Rowe rejected interest from other clubs in order to commit to Rovers, despite the disappointment of relegation last term. “He wasn’t really entertaining the interest from elsewhere,” McSheffrey said. “He just wanted us to look after him and that’s what we’ve done. “At his age, he wants to play as high as he can. He had a lot of offers. “He was under contract, so the ball was in our court. But we felt the right thing to do was to reward him and make him feel wanted and a big part of this club. “We’ll reap the rewards of that and the benefits because a focused and driven Tommy Rowe is a real force at League Two level.”
First team manager Gary McSheffrey believes Tommy Rowe is the perfect figure to help set an ideal culture at Rovers in the coming months. Rowe has signed a new two-year deal to pledge his future to the club until the summer of 2024. Head of football operations James Coppinger, along with McSheffrey, is determined to set a new culture at Rovers as the club looks to bounce back from a disappointing campaign. And Rowe can help deliver that both on and off the pitch according to McSheffrey. “He’s a seasoned pro,” he said. ‘On and off the pitch he lives right. He’s a good role model. “He’s as fit now as he ever was and he ever has been. “It’s a real good one for

WhatsApp group for a few weeks now. Losing Ross was a massive blow - I’ve said that from Day One - but we believe we’ve got a great replacement in Brent. “It’s good to have him on-board. He’s worked in the Championship for years and that experience will be vital. “It’s a different voice and we’re always trying to change things for the lads. “It’s like at the training ground at the moment, it isn’t a huge change, but we’re changing the kitchen and a few other bits to keep the environment as fresh as we can. “Ross left before the end of the season and Gilps stepped up. He has my full trust. He’s really good at what he does and he’s really professional.” “He runs the medical department really well and he knows it insideout.”

The Owls skipper was voted into the side by fellow players from the division, adding to the midfielder’s growing list of accolades from last campaign. Bannan has already been crowned the SWFC Player of the Year, London Owls Player of the Year, Sheffield Star Player of the Year and the Owls’ Community Champion. The Scotland international also landed the EFL Goal of the Season award for his long-range strike against MK Dons and was named in the Sky Bet League One Team of the Season.
