Copley’s Column
This has been an extremely busy week on the social front. We attended a cabaret dinner at the Casa Hotel on Saturday evening, and a very good four course meal was superbly complemented with entertainment from Agnetha and Frida, the girls from Bjorn Again, who were as usual top drawer, both vocally and showing excellent stage presence. We really love these girls, and on learning that they were appearing on bank holiday Monday, a quick phone call to the venue, the Dusty Miller at Barlborough, owned by my very good friend Adrian Fazackerly, secured us a table at the front, impressing our guests for the evening, Ken and Lynn Murray, who are ardent Abba fans. On the Sunday between these two dates, we were pleased to accept a kind invitation from three of our close friends who co-habit in a lovely house in Eckington, top singer Ruth Roubelle, John Keeley and Gary Prior to the mother and father of all parties, with great food, unlimited drinks and great entertainment provided by the gorgeous Cassi Kennedy, Ruth , herself, her very talented ten years old daughter, Kaci-Leigh Holmes, who hasn’t got a shy bone in her body, and Sarah Ross, daughter of my pal Paul, who will be soon on the circuit as an Amy Winehouse tribute act, when she has completed her education. There were contributions from many others, too numerous to mention individually in my column space allowance. It is well known that I only go and see quality artistes, and an act can feel confident if they see me in the audience that they can do the business. One artiste that always delivers is Gary Phillips, and it was a must see for me as he was appearing in the next village to me, at the Horns Inn, Holmesfield. As it was par for the course, the venue was very busy, and the crowd warmed to this magnificent all round entertainer. As he is a devoted Blade, we watched the first leg of the semi-final playoff together before the gig, with his team gaining a good scoreless draw, despite not playing particularly well. Gary was ably assisted by a magnificent fifty minute spot by Paul Isaacs, who also guested with Cassi Kennedy on Saturday night, when she gave her usual fantastic performance at the newly

refurbished Butcher’s Arms. Female artistes would be well served attending one of her gigs, where much could be learned about presentation, linkage and stagecraft. My customary Thursday morning breakfast meeting was a particular funny one this week with the attendance of not only the wonderful Bobby Dennis, but also top funny man, and great entertainer, Bernie Clifton (see photograph). You can imagine the wonderful stories from these giants of comedy together with the anecdotes from the proprietors, top international artistes, Roy and Jackie Toaduff, and how it is occasions such as this that make writing for this newspaper such a joy. Sadly, we will all be going to pay our last respects on Tuesday, at the funeral of our very own legend of entertainment, Tony Whyte, who sadly passed away last week. I have just received a text from my favourite radio presenter, Becky Measures, who alongside Sean Goldsmith presents the breakfast show on Peak Radio, informing me that she and her partner Alex are beginning an exciting new venture. Next week, they are to become mine hosts at the Royal Oak, Brampton, which is quite close to my country home. Becky is a lovely lass and will make a really good landlady, and it will be really good if my readers go along and support her, although obviously not all fifty odd thousand all at once. Are we about to witness the creation of ‘Becky’s Hotpot’, I ask myself? It goes without saying that Caron and I wish Becky and Alex our very best wishes in this exciting period in their lives.

RUSH - CLOCKWORK ANGELS TOUR
Legendary rock band Rush have announced details of their UK Clockwork Angels tour in May 2013, stopping off at the Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield on Tuesday 28th May 2013. These are the first UK dates since the band brought their 3 ½ hour Time Machine Tour in May 2011 – the tour was met to widespread critical acclaim and included a sold out date at London’s O2 Arena. “Rush are one of the last great bands standing” – Metal Hammer, “Canadian legends confirm their status as the world’s biggest and best cult band” – Kerrang, “It’s a blend of power, subtlety, soaring choruses and some of the most intelligent lyrics ever written.” – The Sun 5/5 live review. This follows the band unveiling details of its highly anticipated, new album, “CLOCKWORK ANGELS.” This is the renowned trio’s first new collection of original material in over five years and their first studio release via Anthem/Roadrunner Records. “CLOCKWORK ANGELS,” the band’s 20th studio album, will be released in the UK on June 11th. The recording of “CLOCKWORK ANGELS” began in April 2010 with Grammy Award winning producer Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Deftones) – who also collaborated with the band on their last studio album, 2007’s “SNAKES & ARROWS.” Rush co-produced both records. The first two songs, “Caravan” and “BU2B,” were completed during that first session at Nashville’s Blackbird studios and performed nightly during the wildly successful Time Machine Tour, which ran from June 2010 to June 2011. Work on “CLOCKWORK ANGELS” resumed in the fall of 2011 at Revolution Recording in Toronto after the tour’s finale, with additional strings (arranged by David Campbell) recorded at Hollywood’s Ocean Way Studios earlier this year. Lyrically, “CLOCKWORK ANGELS” chronicles a young man’s quest across a lavish and colorful world of steampunk and alchemy as he attempts to follow his dreams. The story features lost cities, pirates, anarchists, an exotic carnival, and a rigid Watchmaker who imposes precision on every aspect of daily life. The novelization of “CLOCKWORK ANGELS” is being written by science fiction writer Kevin J. Anderson in collaboration with Rush drummer and lyricist Neil Peart. Rush heralded the release of “CLOCKWORK ANGELS” with a new single “Headlong Flight”. Landing at rock radio in mid April the song is already # 1 at Classic Rock in the USA and A-Listed at the UK’s Planet Rock radio. Tickets, priced £60 & £75 (booking fee may apply) for Rush at the Motorpoint Arena, Sheffield go on general sale at 9am on Friday 18th May in person at the Arena Box Office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or online at www.motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk

Kell Brook will face highly ranked Carson Jones at the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield on Saturday July 7th as an IBF World title shot draws a step closer. Tickets priced £30, £40, £60, and £100 (booking fee may apply) are now on sale. Jones is ranked at number three by the IBF – two spots above Brook – and the stakes couldn’t be higher as the victor would move into pole position to fight for the title in the fall, which is being contested by current number one Mike Jones and number two ranked Randall Bailey on June 9 in Las Vegas. The Sheffield star thrilled a packed home crowd in the Arena in March when he dismantled Matthew Hatton in a master class that drew record viewing figures on Sky Sports for non-pay-per-view boxing. The 25 year old from Oklahoma has won his last eight fights inside the distance, and currently holds the USBA welterweight title, which he defended for the second time in April with a seventh round stoppage over Allen Conyers in his hometown, the 34th win and the 24th by KO. “It’s a step-up in class again and one that I’m truly ready for,” said Brook. “Jones is experienced for his age and has been avoided, but I want a World title shot and in order to get it, I need to go through him. “The Hatton night just blew my mind. It was the biggest crowd I’ve ever fought in front of and they were all there for me. That’s a very special feeling and I cannot wait to experience it again.” “Basically Kell Brook is the last person standing in my way to fight for a World title,” said Jones. “He will have to kill me to beat me because I have worked too hard to let anyone stop me from reaching my dream. “It does not matter if the fight is here, there or in Zimbabwe. I have made a living going to other people’s hometowns and knocking them out and this will be no exception. Kell Brook needs to be afraid, very afraid, because his fans are going to see him put to sleep on July 7th.” “This is a tremendous opportunity for Carson and one he personally asked for,” said Bobby Dobbs, Jones’ promoter. “Carson is often overlooked because of his earlier career mismanagement, but I always knew he was an exceptional talent and he has finally begun to hit his stride. He has won eight in a row all by stoppage with some very tough fighters in that cycle. We respect Brook and his team, but we are coming to win and move on to the next level.” “Brook vs. Jones is a fantastic contest and one I’m delighted to have signed,” said Hearn. “Kell is in one of the toughest divisions and to manoeuvre a World title shot isn’t easy. Victory against Carson will put us in line for a shot at the Jones-Bailey winner and that’s a fight I want to bring to the UK in October. Tickets priced £30, £40, £60, and £100 (booking fee may apply) are now on sale, available in person from the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield box office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 and online at www. motorpointarenasheffield.com
Weekly Wit With... ALBERT SNODGRASS
As I knocked back drink after drink the concerned barmaid asked, “Are you okay, sir?” “My son would have been two today...” I sobbed. “Oh, I’m sorry,” she replied. “Do you mind if I ask what happened?” “He was born a day late,” I replied. “Now I’ve got to go to his stinking birthday party tomorrow instead of playing golf with the lads.” Yesterday while having a beer, I shouted at the TV, “Go on City,” when my wife said, “You love that football more than me.” “How can you say that darling? After all the seasons we’ve been together.” I was stopped by a researcher in the street. She asked ‘If you were on a plane that was crashing, what would your last, dying wish be?’ I replied ‘That my ex-wife was in the seat beside me.’ I phoned up Asda earlier. “Do you do deliver?” I asked. “We certainly do, sir.” “Well come quick, my wife’s just gone into labour.” My 3 year old son fell asleep on the sofa today. I phoned my wife and said, “One minute he was sitting there awake, the next he was fast asleep, shall I disturb him?” “No, don’t be silly” she said, “Just leave him exactly where he is until he wakes up.” 2 1/2 hours I was waiting in DFS.

WEDDING VENUE
Weekly Psychic Article by Psychic Glynis
I previously wrote an article about Numerology and how to find your lucky number. In this article I have included your personal crystal. If you have forgotten how to find your personal lucky number here is the formula again... Add together the digits of your date of birth: eg if your DOB is 1st January 1966 the numbers would be1+1+1+9+6+6 = 24 = 2+4 = 6 is your lucky number. Number 1: If your lucky number is one you might be attracted to the beautiful green aquamarine which is found in Brazil and Australia.Your number is connected to the mind, so aquamarine will heighten your awareness. As well as wearing a beautiful gem you will feel in control. Number 2: The lucky number two will be attracted to the clear quartz, the Stone of Wisdom. It is found in the UK and influences your emotions and feelings. Wear quartz when you feel vulnerable and lonely. Number 3: People with a lucky number of three will be attracted to the beautiful deep purple amethyst. This is the “Queen of Stones.” Amethyst is found in Brazil and Tibet. It gives a sense of relaxation and brings out creativity. Number 4: For lucky number four silver is the colour. Number fours are always responsible people who enjoy wearing silver, which is mainly found in Russia and Canada Number 5: This lucky number five is attracted to the pink rose quartz, the stone of love. This is found in Madagascar and Portugal. The number five influences communication, so you may feel confident about speaking in public when you wear your pink rose quartz. Number 6: The lucky number six is influenced by the rarest of gemstones, the diamond. These beautiful twinklers are found in Brazil, China and Africa. A number six influences your desire to look and feel good and wearing a diamond will certainly help. So don’t forget ladies - “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend!”
Number 7: The lucky number seven is associated with platinum - one of the most precious of metals. It is found in Canada and Russia. Number sevens are also attracted to pearls from Persia. A seven influences illusion so perhaps the watery pearls can help you look past material things and see your inner spiritual presence mirrored in every mineral. Number 8: The eights are attracted to both the beautiful turquoise and the opal. Wearing Turquoise will influence your mind and will help you connect with your inner soul. Eights are assertive. There is great strength in gentleness and these crystals may help you gain your strength if worn regularly.

SLIMMING WORLD
Number 9: The number nine is linked to agonite from Morocco. It can be coloured from a deep red to brown or even black. The black contains all the rays of the spectrum, so wearing this crystal reflects your ability to adapt to any situation. Nines are fussy people always wanting answers so agonite, which encompasses the full spectrum, is just right.

Continued from the Front page. Festival Director Dave Healy explained: “Most major towns and cities in England are celebrating the Olympics, but this being Sheffield, we wanted to give it a bit of a different flavour. We have invited some of the city’s best festival and event promoters to come and put on a show, giving our Olympic celebration a true festival vibe. We expect to welcome people from South Yorkshire and beyond and have deliberately kept the pricing affordable. An Under 18s day ticket only costs £10 and if we do make any money, it will immediately be reinvested into the city’s sporting and cultural events. It might not be the UK’s biggest Olympics Party, but we reckon it will be the friendliest and the most fun!” Real Radio Managing Director, Steve South added “Sheftival will be a fantastic event, not only for the people of Sheffield but for the whole of Yorkshire and beyond. We are very excited at the prospect of bringing some of the biggest names in pop to Sheffield in what will be ‘The’ family festival in our Olympic Summer. Sheftival’s unique mix of music and culture, along with tickets priced to encourage family attendance, will create an environment where everyone can come and really drink in the excitement and atmosphere of The Olympics.” A whopping one in seven GB athletes trained in Sheffield and many international Olympic teams have chosen our city as their pre-Olympic home
in the build up to London 2012. At Sheftival, we will be broadcasting Jess Ennis, Usain Bolt and the rest of the Olympics, live on a 48square metre big screen in Don Valley Stadium where anyone can join us for free. Steve Brailey, CEO of Sheffield International Venues said: “Sheffield’s is famous for its sport and music events. Sheftival will bring together everything great about Sheffield and celebrate the sporting heritage of our region, bringing all communities together. What a fantastic party it will be watching the Olympics and enjoying great music.” Dotted throughout the site and taking over the English Institute of Sport Sheffield will be Olympic sports, demonstrations and tournaments from Sheffield Eagles rugby league, table tennis competitions, Hallamshire FA Junior futsal tournament, judo, boxing, fitness classes including zumba and boxercise, and loads more beside. Armchair fans can join our Interactive Olympics in the technology zone. We are expecting to welcome over 50,000 people to the city’s Olympics Party. To guarantee your place get your tickets early. The first set of line-ups for the music stages will be announced in June.

DISPUTES WITH NHS AND SOCIAL SERVICES ADD TO STRESS OF CARING FAMILIES With an ageing population, arranging later life care for a relative will be a scenario that an increasing number of us will have to deal with. Many people think it will be a straightforward task, but dealing with public authorities who themselves are struggling with budget cuts and staff shortages, can be a huge source of stress at an already worrying time. Delays, problems with eligibility for care, charging for care, direct payments that are too low, are just some of the topics that have led to a steady stream of cases before courts and the Local Government Ombudsman. These cases are not only limited to care of the elderly, but include families of a wide range of disabled and
vulnerable people of all ages. Problem-solving legal advice Wrigleys Solicitors have wide experience in Community and Residential Care Legal Advice, and their specialist Austin Thornton told the Mercury: “Public authorities are placed in the position of having to provide help for a population with increasing needs alongside chronic lack of funds to do that job well. But whatever their resource problems, local authorities must act within the law. Many people have a legal right to care. Knowing your rights in this complex field can make all the difference.” Disputes over gifts and paying for care Wrigleys provide advice, representation and support to those in need and their families, either
where difficulties are anticipated or a dispute has arisen. Timely legal advice can protect the interests and the assets of the person needing care, particularly in cases where local authorities believe that a property should be sold to pay for care home fees or where they claim an asset has been given away to avoid these fees. With nursing home fees often in excess of £26,000 per year, being wrongly assessed as eligible to pay can have a huge impact on assets. Where the public authorities themselves are often represented by solicitors, families appointing a solicitor who understands the issues and has experience in this complex field, goes a long way to ensure a fair deal on behalf of the person they are caring for.

Guide2012
WHAT SOIL TYPE DO YOU HAVE IN YOUR GARDEN? In virtually all gardens the soil consists of particles of minerals and organic material plus water and air. Those particles of minerals can be of various sizes: the coarsest are grains of sand, and if they become finer, it is called silt which is deposited as clay. There are innumerable different compositions which each have a different name. Here’s a way of establish the soil type by hand and by eye: 1. Take some soil in your hand and try to knead it into a ball. 2. If it does not fall apart, it contains a substantial proportion of clay particles. 3. If it does fall apart, then the percentage of sand particles is greater. 4. If you are totally unable to knead it into a ball and the (dry) soil trickles through your fingers, then you have poor sandy soil. 5. If the soil feels fibrous and is dark in colour, it is peat soil or at least has a high proportion of organic material. Generally speaking, the darker the soil the more organic material it contains. 6. Also rub some soil between your fingertips. If it clearly feels grainy, and you can see small stones, then it is sandy soil. If it feels smooth, you are dealing with a clay soil. Gardening books identify the following types: Sandy soil: Consists mainly of grainy particles which can be round and worn down or have rough edges (sharp sand). There is always a lot of air between the particles. Sand is a light soil and easy to work. The disadvantage is that water drains through it quickly. Pure sandy soil therefore dries out fairly quickly and fertiliser and other nutrients are rinsed out into the groundwater. In the spring and autumn you should work in substantial quantities of organic material and apply a layer of mulch. Do not dig it over too vigorously. It is often enough to dig over a sandy soil thoroughly once when creating the garden and then ensuring that the percentage of organic material is maintained. Determine the pH and if the soil is fairly acid, you can add lime. Do that well before you apply any fertiliser, since the nitrogen in the fertiliser and the lime will react with one another. Loamy soil: This has the perfect balance of characteristics. Any gardener would like to have this soil – a mixture of sand and clay particles. It is very fertile and good to work, retains enough water, and excess water can drain well. Improve it by applying a substantial mulch layer every spring once the soil has warmed up. Clay soil: Clay soil is very fertile, but hard to work. Mainly because there is so little air in between the fine
soil particles. Clay soil retains a lot of water, but in the summer it can sometimes become as hard as concrete. It shrinks and cracks when it dries out, whilst it becomes one wet, stick mass in winter. Dig over heavy clay soil in the autumn and work through organic material. Leave the raw clods lying there - they need to be frozen apart. Walk on clay soil as little as possible in the winter. Scattering chalk also improves the structure, as does applying a mulch layer in the spring when the soil has warmed up. Chalky soil: Chalky soil can be identified by the lumps of white or pale yellow lime which are present in the usually light-coloured soil like little stones. Chalky soil is fertile, but dries out quickly. Not all crops do well in it. Most chalky soils developed below ancient seas from the skeletons of animals and algae. Limestone is usually full of fossilised remains and consists of all sorts of calcium compounds. You can check whether the soil in your garden is very alkaline or acidic using a chemical test. Work organic materials into the soil every spring and cover it with a thick layer of mulch. Scattering gypsum helps to loosen the soil. Peaty soil: Peaty soil consists mainly of dead plant remains, i.e. organic material. Peat is always acidic. It is also dark. The fibrous structure and the enormous ability to hold water means that peaty soil can remain wet for a very long time. But if it dries out – which can happen in long, hot summers – it is very difficult to get it moist again. A dry sod, practically a lump of dried peat, is also almost impossible to get wet. Peaty soil already contains a lot of organic material. The problem usually lies in the drainage. You can boost drainage by digging grit, sand or other gravel-like material into the soil. Increasing the amount of mineral materials also improves the nutritional value. Determining the acidity (pH) of the soil There are two extremes: pH 1 is extremely acid and pH 14 is extremely alkaline. The switchover point is at pH 7, where the soil is equally acidic and alkaline. Most garden plants and fruit trees prefer a slightly acid soil, with a pH of around 6.5. There are also acid-loving plants, such as many types of heather, rhododendrons, Pieris and blueberries. The biggest variety of plants occurs on chalky soil. You can buy testing kits for measuring the pH in garden centres. What is mulching Mulching is covering the soil with a layer of permeable material. That can be mineral, such as gravel or chippings, but also organic: bark chippings, old cow manure or cocoa shells. Organic material is gradually absorbed into the soil by the soil-life and converted into humus. A layer of mulch prevents the soil from drying out or compacting quickly. Spread a layer of at least five centimetres on all open soil and around plants. This also prevents a lot of weed growth.

Lord Dennis here from Morningside Cattery. Winter months are often a time when your cat can put on a few extra pounds. Carrying extra weight isn’t good for your cat as it can lead to; heart disease, diabetes and breathing problems to name but a few. If you think your cat is carrying excess weight I suggest you consult your vet and he/she will be more than happy to offer give you advice on how to reduce his/her weight loss. Your vet is there to help!!! Let’s hope Spring is on its way, but be aware of hazards in the garden if your cat goes outdoors. Plants and products we use in the garden can be harmful to your cat. Slug pellets contain Metaidehyde and are blue or green in colour and can be very toxic to cats. So please try to keep your cat away from areas where they are being used or stored. Plants: Lilies, tulips, and daffodil bulbs if dug up are also toxic. When adding anything to your garden always read the label carefully regarding the hazards to cats. Bye for now, Dennis

ONE YEAR ON AND STREET PASTORS LIVING CLOSE GOING FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH TO A PUB
The Street Pastors in Chesterfield are having a positive impact on keeping late night revelers safe. One year on from the initial launch of the scheme, the Street Pastors recently met to share their inspirational stories with Chesterfield’s Community Safety Partnership. The Street Pastors deal with people who are drunk and protect vulnerable people. They have a positive influence on changing the street culture in the town centre and have made a significant contribution to the work of the Community Safety Partnership. There have been 24 fewer victims of violence in the town centre since the scheme became operational. Significantly over the Christmas period, violent crime in the town centre declined by 50%. Community Safety Officer, Joe Tomlinson said: “The Street Pastors have been utterly magnificent; these incredible volunteers have demonstrated that the Church has a huge part
to play in the reduction of crime, anti-social behaviour and peoples’ fear of crime. “They have also demonstrated that a common sense, early intervention by people who unconditionally care for others’ adds a dimension to partnership work that had been missing before. The people involved in the scheme really are special individuals who should be praised at the highest level. They are making a real difference to the social standard of living in Chesterfield.” There are 21 Street Pastors in Chesterfield and they patrol in teams, normally on duty on one Saturday each month. They have a further group of trainees lined up to take on the vital role. Some comments received over the past year include: “Street Pastors we love you” - shouted to them by a young reveler. “You bring a calming influence on the street” - local Police Inspector. “‘She is safe now the Street
Pastors are looking after her” comment by man to his girlfriend who had both been trying to assist a drunken woman. “You are a great help to us” - taxi operator. “You are part of our team and we know we can rely on you to look after people who are drunk” - door staff member at night club. Joe continues: “Street Pastors have shown us a different model to partnership working that excites us for the future. We are currently talking to the church about an exciting youth based project aimed at providing activities and social places for young people to gather in an attempt to re-engage our communities, and to demonstrate what good citizenship is all about.” The Street Pastors held their first Annual General Meeting at Grace Chapel, Chesterfield. Chesterfield Community Safety Partnership would like to thank the Chapel for their assistance in giving operational premises support to the scheme.
the option to do so if they wish,” said Mintel. Research by the company, reported in the Sunday Telegraph, found that more than twice as many people find it more enjoyable drinking in a pub than drinking at home. This is because of the “atmosphere and theatre” of a pub environment, Mintel said. Radio Nightingale broadcasts round the clock to provide entertainment for the patients of the Rotherham General Hospital. An admission to hospital can be a disorientating and isolating experience as every day is the same and time becomes elongated as normal routines are broken. With the comfort provided by Radio Nightingale many patients report being better able to relax and take the rest they need to support their recovery. Radio Nightingale is run by volunteers and the whole cost of running the station must be covered by fundraising activities to keep the service on the air to the patients of the Rotherham General Hospital. It’s support from the public that keeps the station going not only financially but also in appreciation. It’s not very often that people take the time to write or ring in to tell us how they’ve found Radio Nightingale, so it’s always very pleasing to hear from listeners who do spare that few moments. Feedback from the patients listening to Radio Nightingale is really important to help us develop our schedule to provide the right kind of programmes at the right times. So if you have any comments on the programmes you’ve heard on Radio Nightingale, please do get in touch. You can write, phone or email. Or like us on Facebook at facebook.com/radionightingale. Radio Nightingale broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the patients and staff of the Rotherham General Hospital on 945 &1350mw and Hospedia. STILL
MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas
How long could you stay standing on a giant inflatable bouncy castle without falling over? What about if there was somebody else there to try and knock you off, but there again you can try and knock them off as well! This coming Sunday, the Norfolk Arms Pub on Ringinglow Road in Sheffield is hosting a giant inflatable Gladiators jousting style game from the team at Sheffield Inflatable Games. Bring the family along and join in the fun. Proceeds raised will go towards helping needy children through out South Yorkshire and the North Midlands with our Magic AM charity Cash for Kids. I will also be down there hosting a game aptly called “I’m still standing”. For our lucky contestants who’ll be joining me, the ones who can indeed stay standing the longest will be in contention for a coveted set of tickets to see the man who brought us the hit record of the same name – Elton John, who’s at the B2 Net Stadium on June 9th. You can join the fun, games and giveaways from about 2.00 until 4.00pm. Come along and say hello!
A FEW WAYS OF KEEPING CLUBS GOING CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington
Club Historians receives many enquiries about how struggling clubs can survive in these challenging times. It’s often worth looking at what other clubs are doing to help themselves and here are a couple of recent examples. The Wellfield Club in Rochdale, affectionately referred to locally as ‘the Welly’, dates back to 1877. It had to close down temporarily in March 2010 due to financial difficulties and may have stayed closed if not for the prompt efforts of committee members like Terry Potts who led the fight back. Supported by other committee and club members, £40,000 was raised in a matter of days! The reality was either they got the money together or the club and its 123 years of history were lost for good. Recently, the Wellfield has offered a ‘home’ to four other clubs who are sharing the premises and holding their meetings there. This is because they were closed down and lost their own premises but we all know that a club is more than bricks and mortar. It’s about its members who don’t just disappear when a club closes. They still need a place to go to socialize with their fellow club members. The Wellfield stepped in and offered them the use of the club and literally a roof over their heads. This is a very helpful strategy that other clubs could well take note of. It helps to keep these other clubs alive even though they no longer have their own building and prevents them disappearing altogether. Plus it benefits the Wellfield as they have additional custom. It’s hoped that these clubs will find their feet and their own place to hang their sign once again. Those currently ‘sheltering the storm’ are the Royal British Legion, the Regiment of Fusiliers, the Solo Club and the transport Club. In Wolverhampton, the Codsall Legionnaires Club decided to consult with a finance company to see if anything could be done about their difficulties. They were advised to lease out their under-used function room. It now houses a pet shop and brings in a new funding stream for the club. Tim Guy, treasurer of the club said that they were all ‘delighted’ as this mean the club could continue to operate. ‘Clubs across the country have been hit hard by rising taxes, the smoking ban and the harsh economic climate-and we are no different.’ The club now has a chance of survival.

DJ FRESH + RITA ORA 08/05/12 MOTORPOINT ARENA
REVIEW
Words by Katy Evans
Known around the city for putting on a steaming hot variety of bands and musicians to both students and the general public alike, Tuesday Club at Sheffield Union has crafted a huge name for itself over the past two years. Failing not to deliver on a colossal scale once again, DJ Fresh with Rita Ora took their turn on the decks on 8th May, performing to an intense crowd of drum and bass along with chart music lovers…and o’h my God did they pull it out the bag! Whether or not you’re a huge fan of dubstep, tech or electro music, it’s hard not to already know some prior knowledge about DJ Fresh. Shooting to the top of the charts with his debut belter ‘Louder’ in July 2011, the southern DJ has the accolade of holding the first UK dubstep number one in the singles charts along with bringing to life a newly explored ipod genre. Pioneering his uniquely marmite musical experience, the hour long set was a whole hearted salute to heavily infused electronic compositions which sure as hell demonstrated his A* ability to get people up and on their feet. Combining together a collection of older material from his previous 2010 album ‘Kryptonite’ along with his commercially successful LP ‘Louder,’ the certified summer soundtrack of last year, DJ Fresh not only delivered bass shattering melodies combining hardcore sustained undertones and punchy lyrics, but hell pooled together heap loads more…insular performances are increasingly common field and disregard the fact that a paying audience is up for sharing a live experience as well. Gracing the Sheffield masses like any seasoned professional would, DJ Fresh was an open book of drum and bass anthems, allowing the crowd to feel his energy as much as they were getting in the flow too. Voted in the top 100 FHM’s sexiest women on the planet, Rita Ora made her appearance with the piercing vocals to DJ Fresh’s February release ‘Hot Right Now.’ Not one to shy away from the limelight, Rita brought the set to an almighty high with her bouncy on stage antics and pitch perfect holds throughout her appearance. Other highlights of the set came with the deliverance of the performers latest release ‘The Power,’ an upbeat number which spears the very heart of intricate rhythmically composed dubstep. For a musician to sound better live than on record is a pretty massive milestone, something with DJ Fresh perfectly demonstrates. His energy and raw passion is increasingly evident with the deliverance of hugely powerful anthemic riffs, which can only be purely felt whilst live on stage. Check out his live performance dates on the official facebook page www.facebook.com/djfresh for all the latest.

Pre-school music group Songbuds are offering a free 1 hour taster for you to enjoy with your child during July in Stannington and Hunters Bar. Songbuds is exciting singing and action sessions with musical play and live musicians. Parents enjoy watching your child’s face light up as their musical expression expands, cuddle together in the lullaby songs, twang the guitars, clang the chime rack, dance on the piano mats, listen to the visiting musicians and share the wonder of music and sounds with ex-professional singer Vanessa, your friendly Songbuds leader. Vanessa began her vocal training from age 10 under international vocal coach Dr. Vivien Pike and has released her own works with Sony, Chrysalis Music, Fat Boy Slim’s Southern Fried Records and has released 2 critically acclaimed albums along with many singles, performed at major festivals including V, Glastonbury, O2, Roskilde and Asagiri Jam in Japan and her music has been used in major commercials, TV series and Hollywood films. Vanessa says ‘Songbuds wish to encourage children from an early age to love music, enjoy listening to it and have fun making it. We invite you and your little ones to come and play with sound the Songbuds way!’ Free taster sessions during July refreshments included. Weekly sessions during term time begin on 5th September and all those who attend a free July taster session can claim £1 off the usual session price of £6. For further details and to book your free session visit www.songbuds.co.uk. Places are limited so please book in advance. We look forward to singing with you soon! www.songbuds.co.uk

Words by Katy Evans
Famed for their electrifying bass lines, powerfully epic vocals and intricately outlandish rhythmic sections, While She Sleeps are fast becoming Sheffield’s finest metalcore exports. Having rapidly built an international fan base up for themselves since the release of their 2010 belter ‘The North Stands For Nothing,’ 2012 is set to be the ‘Sleeps’ year with the hugely anticipated arrival of the groups full length album set for release this summer. Blossoming into a local scene with a secure metal background, While She Sleeps not only have a clear drive to create belters from the very epicentre of post-hardcore, but also the on stage energy and passion to reach impossible heights. The five piece from across the city have already touched national success with the release of ‘Crows’ from the bands previous album, spearing the heart of head banging belters with a concoction of fierce vocals intertwined with fast paced melodies. Early May saw a taster of what is to come with the issue of ‘This Is The Six,’ the debut single off the brutal new album, an inspiring insight into the lives of a hugely upcoming local band. Having been shone into the public’s limelight with day play on the BBC Radio 1 Fearne Cotton show only this month, While She Sleeps have been littered with national coverage on publications across the UK…it seems everyone wants a piece of the Steel Cities hottest new talent. No strangers to the international stages of rock, While She Sleeps have already held court with the likes of Bring Me The Horizon, The Black Out and New Found Glory along with partaking in the Kerrang! Tour 2012 across the UK. To match such huge highs in an already blossoming career, last October saw the group undergo their own headline tour, performing to sold out venues across Britain. The band held their own at this year’s Hit The Deck festival and although performing under the ‘Black Youth’ brand still drew in masses at the packed out Rescue Rooms Stage...not even a suspiciously secret name can hold their fans back! While She Sleeps are set to perform at Slam Dunk Festival 2012, held at Leeds University on 26th May. They are then to embark on the Australian leg of their promo tour which will see the group smash venues up in Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide. Get on board the Sleeps wagon!

BAND PROFILE
round-up
by stuart renton I’m either getting old or senile, or both, as the Britain’s Got Talent final this year was really rather enjoyable. I adored Ashleigh (the girl) and Pudsey (the dog) – better not get that the wrong way around - and I felt their act was a worthy winner over the dreary singers and distinctly average dance troupes, which, let’s be honest, all have their own entry to fame via other shows. Britain’s Got Talent is about variety and there’s really not another show out there featuring dancing dogs or four gals in what’s basically a sceptic tank doing underwater acrobatics. It’s all utterly barking mad, but brilliant stuff. It’s all about the quality of the contestants on these shows that makes for such great viewing and that’s never been more apparent than in the case of The Voice, which, like so many other viewers, saw me turn off halfway through this week. I couldn’t stand to hear another screeching rendition of a beloved song by a bunch of contestants that have been trained to hold that last note for as long as possible, well, I say ‘note’… it’s actually a string of all the notes ever invented plus a few only dogs can hear. It’s one thing to hear a song that could qualify for bad karaoke at the local boozer but another to hear the endless near-fawning platitudes that spew from the judges’ mouths for the next fifteen minutes. But anyway, it’s all over for me… Which is convenient, because one of the world’s most anticipated games came out yesterday. I’ve already given you a lengthy preview of Diablo 3 (on PC), but this title has its sights set on the Game of the Year. An all action role playing adventure, you choose your hero class and set about exploring the world of Sanctuary engaging in some incredible hack and slashery on your quest to find and defeat the demon, Diablo. It’s nothing new and a formula repeated a thousand times but never with such style. Diablo III fully supports multiplayer online gaming where you can quest with a group of friends, or, if you still live in your parent’s basement and can’t afford any, you can hook up with a random group of mostly irritating strangers / children / weirdos who aren’t children but act as though they are (delete as applicable). Just remember to wear your e-condom; e-syphilis is on the rise these days and who knows where your keyboard has been! Opening Night: Even computer servers get performance anxiety and that’s never been truer than the launch of Diablo III. The servers went online at 11:00pm and I was highly “entertained” by the entirely expected and oh-so-fun error messages: “server down”, or my personal favourite “servers are full”. It’s far more amusing to read through all the bellyaching online than it is actually playing the game! Online gamers are a strange bunch - they’ve waited three years for a game and now they can’t manage to wait a single evening without resorting to writing hate mail at the developers and grinding their teeth as they repeatedly press the Refresh Key to repetitive strain inducing levels! I managed to get a few hours’ gaming in this morning and only got tossed off once. Off the servers, mind, any other type of off tossing is purely in your imagination. Filthy! Overall, Diablo III gets a healthy 9/10. It’s a fabulous successor to a series that’s practically legend in terms of gaming. If it were any more popular it’d have its own talk show and trips to rehab. Despite a typically ropey launch that we all fully expected, Diablo III will go from strength to strength and if you like your action hard and your monsters dragony, then this is definitely the game for you.

angler’s corner
PARKLANDS POND
DONCASTER
by Clint Walker
Yet another mad week for me, I’ve been out and about finding new waters and meeting new people to bring you some news. I travelled into Wales to do a little work for Tackle & Gun magazine, and whilst I was there, I picked up a hot tip about HUGE perch! Although it is some distance from sunny Sheffield, Gweryd Lakes near Mold in Denbighshire offers fantastic surroundings in which too fish, with a variety of species to target, including perch which have hit the net at 5lbs 7ozs! Get this though, they are rarely fished for, so there really could be a potential record lurking! I’ve seen the photos in the onsite shop, and there are loads of images of MULTIPLE captures of big perch in excess of 3lbs, 4lbs and bigger..... I asked a few anglers on the banks what thought about the perch, only to be met with “...dunno, don’t really fish for them” What??!!! Why not?? I couldn’t believe my ears and I’m looking forward to trying to arrange a trip soon to find out more, so I’ll keep you informed. There is much more than perch in the lakes though, I spoke to the owner Jeanette who tells me of 27lbs carp, double figure tench and bream and loads of quality silver fish. I did witness some stunning roach and a couple of pristine smaller carp, and then received a catch report from an angler who had bagged up with fish to 16lbs! Google Gweryd Lakes to see some pictures for yourself, or check out my north west round up in Carp Talk magazine as Gweryd will feature there too. By the time you read this, I will have visited local fly fishing mecca Ladybower Fishery for their open weekend. The weather doesn’t look very encouraging, so I hope it isn’t spoiled, but I am looking forward to meeting the team up there to make arrangements for a forthcoming feature in the National angling press and find out more about what makes Ladybower so popular. My column next week will feature coverage and a little more information, but if you have catch reports, I’d love to see them so I can share with readers. Another fishery I’ve discovered (which opens today as I write this) is called Millbrook in the heart of the Staffordshire Moorlands. It’s a five acre (ish) pool which has been completely redesigned and renovated by Craig Stokes and his team to provide a simply stunning venue. confident choice to land the hat-trick providing there are no hangovers from that run. The main opposition looks to be in the shape of Mighty Ambition, Hajras, Poetic Lord, Thomas Chippendale and Rewarded, with a supplementary cautionary note about Icelander who also may prove troublesome to the selection if able to transfer his allweather form to turf. 3.40 JLT Lockinge Stakes, Group 1, 4yo+, 1m: Frankel is the standout horse here and cannot really be opposed. However, if you are looking for a better price then the each-way suggestion is Aidan O’Brien’s So You Think who might be able to land a place if coping with the drop in trip. He hasn’t run over this sort of trip since 2010 but as a multiple Group 1 winner he has the class to do so with merit and may be able to give the Frankel machine a bit of a fright into the bargain. The bet is each-way as I expect Frankel to able to dominate. The one slight concern for me about Frankel however is the recent injury scare and whether he has fully recovered – you sometimes don’t find that out until they race! Newmarket: 2.15 Poptelecom.co.uk Fairway Stakes, Listed, Class 1, 3yo, 1m 2f: Sir Henry Cecil’s Noble Mission will no doubt be all the rage for this one but I fancy that he may get a serious race from Henry Candy’s Rugged Cross who may be a better value price. Rewarded, Thought Worthy, Farhaan and Prince Alzain look to be the best of the rest.

The York May meeting takes place from Wednesday to Friday including the Dante and Musidora Stakes that in recent years have been good indicators to Derby and Oaks chances. It is therefore worth taking an interest in what runs there so I have provided some suggestions for each day’s TV races including all three days from York, and the additional races from Salisbury on Thursday and Newbury on Friday. There are six races on Channel 4 on Saturday, 4 from Newbury and 2 from Newmarket. The weekend’s top race is the Lockinge Stakes from Newbury where the mighty Frankel will resume his career.

2.45 Coralchampionsclub.co.uk Sprint Trophy Handicap, Class 2, 3yo, 0-105, 6f: I have tried to narrow this down to a handful as it is another very competitive affair and a veritable cavalry charge. Without knowledge of the draw, any draw bias and what the final field will be it is a bit of a difficult task but I have ended up with: Bartolomeo; Dark Castle; Gabriel’s Lad; Mince; Rafeej; and Three am Tour. The pin has landed on Gabriel’s Lad based on his last time out showing but he is no more than a hopeful choice in a trappy contest. POTTER SENDS BLADES TO WEMBLEY BLADES NEWS www.sufc.co.uk
Wembley beckons for the Blades after Danny Wilson’s side secured a play-off final berth at the expense of Stevenage. In the play-off semi-final at the Lane, Chris Porter’s late header sealed a first ever win over Stevenage, but more importantly, a chance of promotion. Preparations immediately turn to the finale at Wembley on Saturday 26 May, when the Blades could be 90 minutes from an immediate return to the Championship. Wilson named an unchanged starting XI but, notably, there were changes on the bench where Montgomery and McAllister replaced Ertl and Cresswell, who, after suffering a series of injuries of late, was unavailable due to an eye infection. Stevenage made one change with Shroot replacing Reid, who dropped to the bench. United’s formation from the first leg, 4-4-1-1, remained with Quinn again the most advanced midfielder, supporting lone striker, Porter. Judging by the pre-match rendition of the ‘Greasy Chip Buttie’ anthem, the fans were up for the clash and, despite Borough winning a corner in the first 30 seconds, the home players began at a high tempo, working a first chance on seven minutes. From a Hill cross, Williamson got in ahead of his marker to set up a header from Porter, who forced goalkeeper Day into a one-handed save. The opening 20 minutes saw United firmly in the ascendency but a number of corners and open-play deliveries into the box was all that the home side had to show for the dominance. Doyle saw a lot of the ball early on and he made up a lot of ground to halt a break by Freeman around the half hour mark. For United, Porter headed down a Hill cross before visiting defender Ashton sliced the ball onto the roof of his own net, whilst just before the break Williamson curled wide after Porter laid off. McDonald, who was struggling with a hamstring problem before the game, needed treatment at the end of the first half and although he was quickly
back on his feet, he was unable to start the second period - the midfielder was replaced by Montgomery. United were quickly back on the offensive and went close on 48 minutes but, after Lowton and Williamson had combined on the right, a shot from Flynn was blocked by Lascelles and then, from a Porter cross, a shot from Williamson, arriving late in the box, was just wide. The Blades, it seemed, were getting closer, and the Kop were on their feet on 57 minutes when Lowton’s forward ball was controlled by Porter for Flynn to smash a half volley from 25 yards, which was just wide. Stevenage’s first effort on the half arrived just before the hour but Freeman, who received a pass from Laird, shot at Simonsen at the near post. The hardworking Quinn curled over on 62 minutes, after good work from Williamson, who then fired the next shot, a free-kick, into the Kop. Stevenage, for all their defensive endeavours, were a threat on the break and after Freeman held off Lowton, who was later booked, the ball broke for Laird to fire a shot which Simonsen needed to tip over. It was followed by a 30-yard free-kick from Bostwick, which the Blades goalkeeper held. United went back on the attack and in the final ten minutes the chances continued to pour down on the Stevenage goal. A Lowton left-footer was blocked and Hill, with a first-timer from 35 yards, went close. Quinn also had an effort saved by Day before the decisive moment arrived with five minutes remaining. From a Simonsen kick, Montgomery won the initial header and Porter, Quinn and Lowton, who delivered the cross, were involved before PORTER got in ahead of the visiting central defenders to beat Day with a close range header, in front of the Kop. Naturally, Stevenage then committed men forward, captain Roberts made himself an auxiliary centre forward, whilst Reid’s header from a cross was straight at Simonsen. Three minutes of added time was announced but United were smart in the extra period and held on, the final whistle signalling a pitch invasion by Unitedites. Blades: Simonsen, Lowton, Doyle, Flynn, Williamson, Collins, Maguire, Porter, McDonald (Montgomery 45), Quinn, Hill. Unused: Howard, Taylor, McAllister, O’Halloran. Stevenage: Day, Wilson, Laird, Ashton, Byrom (Reid 87), Roberts, Freeman, Bostwick, Agyemang (Beardsley 63), Lascelles, Shroot (Mousinho 57). Unused: Julian, Charles.
DANNYʼS DELIGHT OWLS RELEASE SIX BLADES NEWS www.sufc.co.uk
Danny Wilson felt his Blades deserved to win Monday’s play-off semi-final second leg. Chris Porter scored the all-important late goal which ensures the Blades will be in the play-off final at Wembley on Saturday 26 May. “Now for the hard part - big style,” said the United chief. “They were two of the hardest games we have had all season, and I have to say that Stevenage were fantastic once again. “We take nothing away from Stevenage but we shaded it and we played some great stuff at times. We were incisive and created a lot of chances in the second half. It was a real good cup tie. I felt that we dominated large periods, some of the football we played was tremendous.” Wilson also praised goal-hero Porter, adding: “He got better as the day went on. He is a very fit boy, otherwise we wouldn’t have put him in that lone position up front. Ports has been chomping at the bit to play, he has taken his opportunity very well from my point of view. “It’s a great boost for his confidence. Not just for his goal, but his performance as the game went on. Getting the goal was massive for him.”
MILLERS SECOND SIGNING MILLERS NEWS www.themillers.co.uk
Rotherham United are pleased to have agreed terms to sign striker Kayode Odejayi from League One Colchester United. Odejayi has just enjoyed a successful season with the Essex club capped by being rewarded with the supporters playerof the year award. The playerled his teams fight for a League One play-off place right up until the last few weeks of the season, and will be looking to better that with the Millers in the forthcoming year. Returning to South Yorkshire after a spell with Barnsley, the 6’3 powerful front man has been sought after in the last few weeks but the Millers finally secured his services earlier today. The player has penned a pre-contract and legal agreement that will see him join up with Steve Evans’ squad on 1st July. Speaking minutes after the formal documentation was completed Evans said: ‘’I am delighted with this signing and I have to say we have beaten a number of good clubs to get him here but with the fantastic New York Stadium and the big support we have here I always believed we stood a chance, and I never gave up.”
OWLS NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
Sheffield Wednesday will release six players approaching the end of their current contracts. Goalkeepers Sean Cuff and Richard O’Donnell will seek new clubs over the summer, as will defender Jon Otsemebor, midfielder Chris Sedgwick and strikers Clinton Morrison and Vadaine Oliver. From the academy, newly-crowned Player of the Year Jarrod Kyle steps up to first year professional status and midfielder Mitch Husbands also remains at the club for a further year. Matt Tumilty, Lee Wall, Scott Canham and Tom Rowbotham will be released. The Owls would like to thank all those players released for their services and wish them well for the future.
ON TOP OF THE WORLD OWLS NEWS www.swfc.co.uk
Miguel Llera has reflected on the last week at Sheffield Wednesday and rates that period of time as the most memorable of his career. The popular Spaniard played a key role in helping the Owls to automatic promotion, scoring four crucial goals during the run-in and proving a rock at the heart of the rearguard. In addition, Llera was crowned as the npower League 1 Player of the Month for April. He said: “It has been so memorable and enjoyable. It was unbelievable when the final whistle went against Wycombe. “I lost my helmet, shin pads, everything. It was a moment the fans deserved. It’s their club, and for them the club must be in the Championship. “With these fans, it is impossible to come down. “I think the Championship will be very hard because there are a lot of good teams. But why shouldn’t we have a good season?” In addition, Llera was crowned as the npower League 1 Player of the Month for April and the towering defender dedicated his award to everyone in the dressing room at Hillsborough. He said: “It is always nice to be recognised and to get the goals was pleasing because they were very important goals. “But the award is for the team because promotion was a team effort and everyone who played a part deserves the recognition too. “I am always confident of scoring goals because I practise a lot. I always thought that when I scored one goal, others would follow and that is what happened.”
