South Yorkshire’s Mayor, Oliver Coppard, has responded to the Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, announcement this morning that she we will work with City of Doncaster Council and South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority to support plans to re-open Doncaster Sheffield Airport.
The Mayor said: “This is a hugely welcome intervention from the Chancellor, committing to work with us on our plans to develop South Yorkshire Airport City. That support from the government could be
vital in helping us to re-open DoncasterSheffield Airport, and deliver our 10-year plan to unlock the significant potential of Gateway East.
“I have been committed to reopening DSA since day one. And the best way for us to give DSA the future it deserves is to get our plan right from the start, giving us the best chance to allow our airport to thrive, creating good jobs in the industries of the future, making best use of taxpayer’s money and bringing down the carbon footprint of flying.
“The last government
didn’t lift a finger to support our airport.
That it closed with 800 direct jobs lost in South Yorkshire is in no small part down to their lack of support. By contrast, this government has now committed to working with City of Doncaster Council and with me because we share the same ambition for growth.
And can see the significant opportunity presented by the South Yorkshire Airport City Plan; a plan to reopen DSA, build hundreds of homes and create a world leading sustainable aviation hub in South Yorkshire.
“But even with the
support of government, none of that is easy.
In the next few weeks City of Doncaster Council will deliver the full plan to the Mayoral Combined Authority Board. We will need to carefully review that plan while working with the government to get to a final decision by the summer.
“I know people and businesses want to see DSA re-open as quickly as possible. I’m grateful to Rachel Reeves and the government for now committing to work with us on the challenges and opportunities that presents, and help us towards that goal.”

child mental health week
Children’s Mental Health
Week begins on the 3rd February 2025 and it’s all about highlighting the importance of mental health support from a young age.
Research has shown that 75% of mental illnesses start before a person’s 18th birthday, meaning young people are facing more challenges than ever. As parents, it can be hard sometimes to know how to help them. Luckily, experts have revealed five top tips for supporting your child’s mental health.
Add a 30-minute walk to their day
The connection between physical and mental health is undeniable.
According to the American Psychological Association, regular exercise reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression and helps to improve sleep quality, which in turn improves emotional regulation and cognitive function. Start by taking your child on a 30-minute walk each day and ensuring they are getting enough quality sleep each night, and see the positive changes in their mental state.
Maintain their social connections
Social isolation is one of the leading causes of depression and anxiety, according to the Mental Health Foundation.
Helping your child stay connected with friends and family or signing them up to things like sports teams and clubs can have profound effects on their mental health, as social connections provide a sense of purpose and help release feel-good chemicals like dopamine. Those who maintain strong social connections are happier and healthier. If your child is struggling, encourage them to reach out to just one friend or family member each day. Even just a brief text or call can make all the difference. Ensure they take time for themselves
Engaging in hobbies and activities that make your child happy is crucial to help them maintain a positive outlook.
Whether it’s playing sports, reading, painting, or playing an instrument, taking personal time to do the things they enjoy can help children destress and refresh their minds. If they have a busy schedule and struggle to find time, try encouraging them to take just 15-30 minutes per day, perhaps when they wake up in the
morning or just before bed, to engage in a hobby they love. Even small moments of joy can make a big difference to their mental health.
Plan activities to look forward to Having something to look forward to, big or small, can boost a person’s mood and give them a sense of excitement and hope, according to the Mental Health Foundation. Planning ahead, whether it’s a holiday, a meal at their favourite restaurant, or even a simple nature walk with the family, gives your child’s mind something positive to focus on. Start by thinking about what activities you and your child enjoy and create both short and long-term plans that give them something to smile about.
Encourage them to start a journal Recognising and understanding emotions is crucial for a child’s mental well-being. If they are feeling down, encourage them to take some time to identify their feelings- whether it’s sadness, frustration, or anxiety. This can lighten the emotional load and help them process these emotions more effectively.Journaling is a powerful tool for organizing thoughts and gaining clarity. Older children may benefit from spending some time each day writing down what they are feeling and what triggered those emotions. This can help them spot patterns and gain better control over their reactions. To start, get them a notebook to keep by their bed. Encourage them to set aside 10 minutes each night to reflect on their day and jot down their feelings. Though it may seem like a small step, this daily habit can have a profound impact on their mental health, helping them better understand and manage their emotions.
The days surrounding Children’s Mental Health Week are perfect for starting positive, open conversations about mental health. Children should feel empowered to talk about their feelings without fear of judgement. When we lead by example and openly express our emotions, it sends a message that vulnerability is not a weakness, but a strength.
mayor’s thanks for support

support dogs visited
A senior employment minister heard first-hand the endless ‘pawsibilities’ assistance dogs can give to help people remain in work.
Sir Stephen Timms, minister of state for social security and disability, was given a tour of the Sheffield-based Support Dogs charity headquarters, where he met some superhero pooches and discovered how they help ensure a more inclusive world for their owners.
Support Dogs trains and provides assistance dogs to help autistic children, and adults with epilepsy or a physical disability, to live safer, more independent lives. Among those benefitting from an awe-inspiring support dog is Andrea Jack, whose disability assistance dogs, Nikey and predecessor Ruby, have ensured she continues to excel in the workplace. Andrea, 52, has an inflammatory form of arthritis called ankylosing spondylitis. She also has psoriatic arthritis, a severe, chronic condition which affects the joints and skin. Labrador/Poodle/ Golden Retriever cross Nikey is following in the pawprints of retired Ruby, whose help extends from supporting her with day-to-day tasks, such as helping her to get undressed and emptying the washing machine, to assisting her in the workplace.
Andrea is a customer experience manager for global precision medicine firm Diaceutics plc and Ruby has accompanied her to Ireland and Northern Ireland to attend various work meetings. Nikey is being trained to do the same. She said: “It would be almost impossible for me to travel for work without Nikey, and Ruby before her. I wouldn’t be able to be independent while staying in hotels at all. For instance, she helps me to get undressed at the end of the day, and picks up my walking stick. The only other option would be to ask a colleague to help – and who would want to do that? Ruby and Nikey have completely changed my life and I’m forever grateful to Support Dogs.”
Sir Stephen also met Support Dogs client and trustee, Grainne O’Connor, who has Multiple Sclerosis. The 56-year-old’s support dog Rupert and predecessor Tori have helped her
manage her workload and travelling through her academic studies, which include a PhD thesis on the effects of support dogs on people with MS.
Grainne said: “The dog doesn’t get rid of a long-term disability or condition, but it makes it endurable in the best possible way.”
The ministerial visit comes as Support Dogs faces an overwhelming demand for its services, with the charity set to launch a capital appeal to raise money for a brand new national training centre, in the Hillsborough area. It also follows the Department of Work and Pensions launching a ‘Work Well’ scheme in 15 areas including South Yorkshire, to become part of new £64 million pilot to deliver joined-up work and health support. Sir Stephen said: “The extent to which assistance dogs can remove barriers for people is remarkable –whether helping children with autism to live independently or supporting their disabled owners to remain in work. Many disabled people face barriers which can make it harder to live full, independent lives. We will work with them to ensure their voices are at the heart of our plan to reform health and disability benefits.”

stroke risk factor
A worryingly large proportion of UK adults don’t know that high blood pressure is the most likely cause of stroke, according to new statistics from the Stroke Association.
Findings from the leading stroke support charity show that 36% of people who have experience of, and therefore a connection, to stroke don’t know that high blood pressure is the biggest risk factor for the condition. Their connection to strokeeither through their own diagnosis or that of a loved one - is likely to increase their knowledge of stroke and its causes.
In addition, the Stroke Association has found that awareness levels are even lower amongst people who don’t have such a connection to stroke, with 43% not knowing that high blood pressure is the leading risk factor for stroke.
1.3 million people in the UK are survivors of stroke and someone in the UK has a stroke every five minutes, with high blood pressure accounting for around half of those.
Stroke survivors are frequently left with physical and mental disabilities including paralysis, problems with vision, difficulties swallowing and a struggle to communicate.
To mark Stroke Prevention Day, the Stroke Association is
encouraging people to have their blood pressure regularly checked.
As well as high blood pressure, risk factors of stroke also include poor diet, lack of exercise and smoking. Those with high readings can cut their stroke risk by reducing salt intake, regularly exercising, reviewing alcohol consumption, and smokers should try to quit.
The charity is also lobbying the Government to prioritise stroke prevention as part of the 10 Year Health Plan for England. Prompt treatment, such as thrombectomy or thrombolysis, as well as effective recovery can help stroke survivors to live physically and mentally well.
Juliet Bouverie OBE, CEO of the Stroke Association, said: “Around 100,000 people in the UK have a stroke every year. Worryingly, this has been increasing over the last 20 years, particularly amongst people of working age. The lives of the 90,000 people who survive stroke every year in the UK change in an instant as the condition impacts on their ability to live physically and mentally well. It is vital that everyone knows what can cause a stroke, so they can proactively look after their health to reduce the risk. We’re encouraging adults of any age to get their blood pressure checked on a regular basis. This will equip them with knowledge on whether they are at risk of having a stroke so that they can take steps to reduce their chances, if required.” Whilst people of any age can have a stroke, it is most likely to impact those over the age of 65. Free blood pressure checks are available from the GP, participating pharmacies, and are also part of NHS health checks for those over the age of 40 in England and Wales. If you have high blood pressure, and want to support the Stroke Association, get involved with its fundraising initiative, Stride for Stroke. The charity is asking people to take one step for each of the 1.3 million stroke survivors currently living in the UK, which works out as 10,000 steps per day for 130 days. Or Run 50 asks people to cover 50 miles across a month of their choice. WORK DUE TO BEGIN ON UNIQUE ADELPHI CINEMA PROJECT
For decades it was a building right at the heart of the Attercliffe community, keeping people up to date on the latest news and local events during its time as a cinema. Work is now due to begin to bring it back into public use. For decades it was a building right at the heart of the Attercliffe community, keeping people up to date on the latest news and local events during its time as a cinema. Work is now due to begin to bring it back into public use.
Opened in 1920, the Grade II listed building operated as a cinema for nearly 50 years including surviving bomb damage during the Second World War. It closed as a Cinema in October 1967, becoming a Bingo Hall with the building then becoming a nightclub in 1995 until 2000. In 2013 the historic building was used as a storage facility. Sheffield City Council, along with project partners, Kier, are now taking the first steps into transforming the building, including retaining the stunning frontage, and bringing it back into community use as a mixed-use space, comprising leisure, arts and music elements.
Cllr Ben Miskell, Chair of the Transport, Regeneration and Climate Policy Committee at Sheffield City Council said:
“Today marks a fantastic milestone in the long and storied history of the Adelphi Cinema, a moment when work will begin to bring it back into use for the benefit of the
local community once again.
“ This building holds a very special place in people’s heart in Attercliffe and rightly so, it was once a focal point. Our ambitions for it will see it return to being that focal point with the community at the heart of this project. The Adelphi Cinema is over a hundred years old and, once this transformation has been completed, will be around for many more years to come.”
The Adelphi Cinema project forms part of a wider regeneration of Attercliffe including the building of 1,000 new homes at Attercliffe Waterside and the creation of the World-Class National Centre for Child Health Technology at Sheffield’s Olympic Legacy Park. The restoration work will be carried out by Kier Places, a Kier business which delivers building, workplace, and residential solutions in places where people live and work across the UK.
“We’re delighted to be working with Sheffield City Council on
this project, bringing this iconic building back to the life for the local community. The first phase of the project has started, clearing all the waste out of the building and getting it to a point where the transformation can begin.”
“A big part of what we do in Kier Places is about working closely with local communities whilst delivering on our sites. The Adelphi is an exciting project with the potential to have a really positive impact on the area and residents, and we’re looking forward to being part of the building’s new story.”
- Alan Smith, Kier Places area manager (North)
The first stage of the Adelphi Cinema project will see the building prepared for the transformation work to begin. This will include the removal of any harmful waste from inside before the whole site is cleaned in preparation for the larger project to begin in the Spring.
Music festival postponed over lack of funds
Organisers of a local music festival in Sheffield have said it will not go ahead this year due to financial constraints.
Sharrow Festival had not raised the £20,000 in funding it needed, they said. They added that they hoped the event could return next year - which would be its 30th anniversary - if it secured the money it needed.
Organiser Emma Rhodes said they had “every intention of bringing it back”.

Organisers say they’re aiming to return next year
She said the cost of running the festival had risen significantly since the pandemic, with the businesses they work with charging more.
Accessing grant funding had also become more competitive, she added, and they had been rejected for National Lottery funding that they previously relied on.
For the festival to become selfsufficient, she believed it would have to start charging attendees, an idea she rejected.
“That immediately places a barrier for a lot of members of the local community, preventing them from attending, and going against the ethos of what the event has always been,” she said.

Local festival cancelled: ‘There’s no money’
In its place, organisers said they were working to create smaller alternatives to bring the community together, which could also help raise money for next year’s festival. They also intend to reapply for a National Lottery grant, and have appealed for community support, including ideas on how further funds could be raised.
The event has been held annually since 1996, and brings together local musicians, businesses, and organisations at Mount Pleasant Park.
Ms Jones said it was “hard to sum up its value”.
“We just want to reassure everybody who’s worried we have every intention of bringing it back in 2026 - this is just postponed, we’re not gone forever.”
The UK Government has announced that it intends to pass a new law allowing people to use digital ID apps on their phones to prove their age when buying alcohol in licensed premises and shops. Under the new system, people will be able to present secure digital identities as proof of age when buying alcohol – if they choose to – and will still be able
to use traditional physical forms of identification like a driving licence or passport.
These digital identities, already provided by a number of companies, will have to be independently certified against Government standards.
Announcing the initiative, the Technology Secretary, Peter Kyle, said: “This change benefits both consumers and businesses spurring the economic growth we need to put more money in the pockets of working people as part of our Plan for Change.
“By Christmas 2025, you won’t need to carry a wallet or risk losing important documents like your passport or driving licence when heading out to celebrate.
“With a certified digital identity on your phone, you can raise a glass in your local without hassle – a merry step forward
in making age verification safer, easier, and more convenient for everyone.
”The Government pointed to arecent consultation which revealed support for updating the Licensing Act 2003 to allow digital identities to be used for alcohol sales.
It said that respondents also endorsed the idea that providers of digital identity services should meet stringent Government-approved standards.
The measures are part of the Data (Use and Access) Bill, introduced in Parliament in 2024.
Once passed, the Bill will pave the way for certified digital identities to be added to the list of accepted age verification methods, alongside traditional forms like passports and driving licences.

ALL ABOUT THE RESULT, SAYS WILDER
Another clean sheet and three big points for United and that’s all that matters to boss
Chris Wilder after a 1-0 win at Derby County.
The Blades returned to winning ways thanks to a Ben Brereton Diaz goal following Tom Cannon’s cross just after half time, which proved to be enough to down Derby
at Pride Park.
After the game Wilder shared his delight, admitting he was thrilled his team found a way as his reinforced side continue to get used to one another.
He said: “The result is the biggest thing, it always is. You’d like to play better but when you add everything into
the mix, five players coming into the team, Vini Souza back after a long-time out, Hamza, Ben and Harry Clarke not playing a lot of minutes, Tom Cannon’s second game. From that point of view - modified minutes for a few - I’m absolutely delighted, and I am delighted for the 3,000+ United fans
at the end.
“It was a tough game because, as I said before, Paul’s teams are organised, they go manfor-man, they press, the pitch isn’t the best and they make it really difficult.
“Any part of the season, a win is a win, but I think in terms of the work we have had to pile into the
players this week and to get over the line - not in the ideal way- we have had to work hard for it, but with all those things which we have had to deal with, to get a big three points is huge.”
On the goal, Wilder added: “Fabulous turn by Tom (Cannon), unselfishly rolled it across the face of the
goal and we all love a back stick tap in. I’m loving it that it was Ben (Brereton Diaz) as well because his attitude last year was first class. I said to him afterwards that I was just delighted he got a winner and was part of a winning team because it has been a difficult few months for him.”
BLADES ADD PERUVIAN TO ATTACKING OPTIONS
United’s attacking options have been bolstered with the Blades beating the deadline after tapping into the South American market.
Peruvian Jefferson Cáceres is a player identified through United’s data driven transfer strategy and joins
from Peruvian Primera División side FBC Melgar.
The 22-year-old has agreed terms on a deal until 2027, with the option of a further year, after an undisclosed fee was agreed between the two clubs.
On the signing, boss
Chris Wilder commented:
“With the collaborative
way we work with regards signings, the options available to the club under the new ownership allows us to cast our net further afield.
“I’ve spoken previously about how we are looking to be more data driven with some of our targets, and we have explored the use of this
to find players which were previously not on our radar.
“Jefferson has been identified using this strategy, he’s a young lad who we’re keen to develop.”
During his time with FBC Melgar, he helped the club to an impressive unbeaten run at the back
MCCANN HAILS ROVERS’ INGENUITY IN FIGURING OUT MK DONS CURVEBALL
Grant McCann hailed the growing maturity of his Rovers players as they thought on their feet to tackle MK Dons. McCann admitted falling for a bluff from visiting manager Scott Lindsey, who fielded an unexpected 4-4-2 diamond formation at the Eco-Power Stadium. But he praised his players for figuring out the shift for themselves - which represented a step forward in their development.
“I thought it was a really good game against a really good MK Dons team,” McCann said. “I know they haven’t been on the run of form Scott would want them on but
you can see they’re very good technical players.
“I think they’ve paid us huge credit by coming here and changing their shape. I’ve not seen Scott’s teams play in that shape before so they surprised us a bit.
“They threw us a bit of a double bluff in the warm up when I saw Jay Williams in between the two centre halves warming up. We thought they were going to be a 3-5-2 with Alex Gilbey as a ten but they ended up in a diamond.
“We had to adjust and what is really pleasing from today is that the boys are really starting to understand. They’re not having to shout over to
me or Cliff on the bench to ask what they’re doing.
“Luke Molyneux recognised it straight away. Him and Ethan Ennis went high and Joe Ironside dropped onto Jay Williams. The first goal came from it, with Joe dropping off onto their six. I really enjoyed the game and I felt we looked threatening every time we went forward.
We knew we had to be good in terms of taking the ball off them,
breaking and passing forward.
“We should have had more goals. Although they had a lot of the ball at times, they always will because of the type of team they are.
“I’m really pleased with the overall performance from the boys.” McCann was delighted with the energy levels on display from his side, despite having one day fewer to prepare than their opponents.
end of last season which enabled them to finish in the higher echelons of the Peruvian top flight. He has been involved heavily in pre-season, with the new Peruvian campaign set to get underway this weekend.
Arriving in Sheffield on Monday, he commented: “I am pleased to be
“It’s always a worry in your head, thinking how the boys are going to be,” he said. “We only made one change, only because we felt Patrick Kelly’s dribbling power would hurt them and he did, many times.
“The energy was outstanding. It was probably one of the highest it’s been. It’s a testament to the fitness levels of the team along with the momentum we’re building.
“We’ve won five on the spin, we want to keep it going and the fans were outstanding again.
I’m really pleased for everybody.”
joining Sheffield United and I am looking forward to my next challenge.”
Cáceres joining the Blades is subject to relevant documentation being lodged and approved. He is the seventh signing of the January transfer window.
WE WILL KEEP A POSITIVE MINDSET
The Owls did everything but score a second goal against Luton and Danny Röhl took heart from the positive performance, particularly through a one-sided second half.
Michael Smith’s penalty cancelled out an Alfie Doughty strike to give both sides a share of the spoils at Hillsborough.
Rohl said: “I said last week we must focus on the positive and this is the mindset we will have for the rest of the season.
“We have 16 matchdays to go and we will give it everything in a positive way. We tried everything to win this game today, we had 17 shots but Luton defended well and we could not get the second goal.
“I believe we should
have won this game but we take one point, it is progress and we are now two points away from the top six.”
With two new signings in the building – Stuart Armstrong and Ibrahim Cissoko – Rohl praised the off-field recruitment ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline.
He added: “I am really pleased with the two new players. They will bring a lot to the squad for the rest of the season.
“We have been clinical in the market and big credit to the chairman for this backing.
“We have had good communication, we made these moves quickly and we now have two more players of quality.”
MILLERS CAPTURE MANCHESTER UNITED YOUNGSTER ON LOAN
Rotherham United are delighted to confirm the loan capture of Manchester United youngster Dan Gore for the remainder of the 2024/25 campaign, subject to ratification from the EFL, Premier League and FA.
The 20-year-old joined United’s Academy from Burnley in 2018 and was part of the squad that won the 2022 FA Youth Cup, before being voted the Red Devils’ 2022/23 Reserve Team Player of the Year. The midfielder
made his senior bow for Manchester United as a substitute in their 3-0 Carabao Cup win against Crystal Palace in 2023 before being rewarded with his Premier League debut against Aston Villa at Old Trafford the same year.
Gore was loaned out for his first taste of EFL football last term when he made a temporary switch to Port Vale, but he was unfortunate to see this cut short due to injury following his debut. He has continued
his rehabilitation with the Under 21s and has been training with the first team and the Millers have now been selected as the place for him to continue his footballing development.
The tenacious and skilled midfielder has been capped by various England youth levels, including the U20s. Dan will wear the number
18 shirt during his loan spell at AESSEAL New York Stadium.
