Millennium Metamorphosis
T
he dawn of the new millennium has provided the Met team with a timely opportunity to re-evaluate our role and reassess the services we provide and the way we provide them. The Met has a long history of promoting quality events in Bury, but we realise we could be achieving more. You can expect to see big changes throughout 2000.

This Season Expanded Programme - An increased number and variety of events to give you wider choice. Regular comedy, jazz & blues, dance, world music, poetry and storytelling. More courses and workshops designed to develop skills and participation. New Look Brochure - this is intended to be more practical and to present a more modern image. Does it work? Let us know. Café Bar Redevelopment the Café Bar will close for the first phase of it’s redevelopment from January 15 to 22. This aims to unite the café bar with the arts centre, providing it with a new look, improved menu and service and it’s own programme of events. A Launch Party will be held on Saturday 22 January at 8pm. This free event is open to the public. Why not pay a visit and give us your thoughts?
Gallery - a new exhibition space in support of local artists. Creche Facilities - available at selected events to increase our family friendliness. Signed Performances at selected events to increase access for the hard of hearing. Volunteer Scheme - further development of this scheme to provide opportunities for public participation and support in all areas of our work.
Future Developments Building Improvements new seating system, upgraded technical facilities and refurbishment of the building. Membership Scheme - to provide discounts and additional services for regular supporters. Broader Arts Provision providing performances, community arts and education activities out in the community. Square Pegs Lift is a youth arts project for young people aged 8-25 working across a range of art forms. In Square Pegs they examine society’s pressure to conform with a no holds barred performance using physical theatre. The first half, performed by Lift’s 8-13 year olds, looks at ‘being in with the in-crowd’, the second by the 14 plus group, explores issues surrounding sexuality and the coming of age. Please Note: Part 2 contains adult material with references to sexuality. Parents are left to their own discretion as to whether to allow their children to attend this event.

This spring sees Lift performing Square Pegs in February followed by rehearsals for this year’s Streets Ahead Festival. Get to work alongside international performers in this Greater Manchester wide festival of music, dance, drama and spectacle. Look out for publicity in February – prior booking is essential. A course designed to provide a basic understanding of multichannel mixing in a live music environment. The course will cover equipment, setting up, the mixing desk, foldback, effects and safety issues.
Whether your interest is in theatre or gigs, learn the basic skills required for lighting an event using a programmable system. This practical course covers design, operation and safety issues.

Workshops Six Session Starting from Tuesday 21 March - Saturday 22 April M u s i c Te c h n o l o g y Wo r k s h o p s Join us in a series of workshops that focus on Contemporary Music, and see how much Music Technology influences today’s sounds. Explore musical innovations that inspire composers and performers to expand their creativity. You will have the opportunity to influence group discussion and participate in experimental sessions. The combination of electronic and acoustic instruments, and the diversity of musics will provide a fascinating musical extravaganza for all to enjoy. The ‘final act’ will be one to remember! The course comprises five two hour sessions on Tuesday evenings, and climaxes in a final all day session on Saturday 22 April. Sessions are independent of one another, so you can attend the whole course, or just the parts that interest you. Samba dancers and drummers wanted! Zambura, Bury’s community samba band, is a group of over forty people who meet at The Met to play samba, the drum music of the Rio carnival. Zambura also has a sister group for samba dancers. Their first CD is now available. No experience is necessary so if you’d like to dance or play this great music, why not join? The
