CNN Philippines Officially Closes

Wednesday, January 31, 2024- CNN Philippines officially closed operations on all news platforms after nearly nine years. The closing down of this television network was due to financial losses.

Launched on March 16, 2015, CNN Philippines was a television network operated by Nine Media under license from Warner Bros. Discovery as the main content provider.

The closure of this network affects the students as this has an impact of financial viability on media organizations and the broader implications for journalism and communication industries. This network serves as a case study for students studying media and communications, illustrating the challenges faced by traditional media outlets in the digital age. The loss of 300 jobs shows the relevance of career planning and the need for students to take the responsibility and develop backup plans in case everything goes wrong with their future employment in the media.

The shutting down of the CNN franchise affected about 300 employees—this said decision was approved by the the network owner of Nine Media Corp. , Antonio CabangonChua. However, the former made the decision to postpone implementation until after the Christmas season.

DREAMS SET SAIL. KGMC Chairman Robert 'Ka Dodoy' Ballon delivers rays of hope as he turns over vibrant YBHF yellow boats, fostering a brighter future for the community's resilient fishermen!

ROWS OF HOPE

YBHF Bestows 20 Add’l Boats to KGMC

And it was all yellow!

In a display of solidarity, 20 additional new yellow self-paddled boats were donated to the Kapunongan sa mga Gagmay’ng Mangingisda sa Concepcion (KGMC) Community through the assistance of Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation (YBHF) at Concepcion, Kabasalan, Zamboanga Sibugay, last January 30, 2024.

In an interview with the Chairman of KGMC, Robert “Ka Dodoy” Ballon, these boats will soon be used by the community for planting mangroves and cultivating oysters, especially in zones where movement is limited.

The livelihood of the fisherfolk of Concepcion has become sustainable, from multiple hours of being exposed to the mouth of the river to the sea, via the yellow boats their fishing time was diminished.

“Our fishermen who weren’t fortunate enough to own any bangka, used bamboo crafts as well as basins for fishing, nonetheless, through the support YBHP provided, their livelihood became comfortable from 5 - 8 hours a day of fishing back and forth, it was reduced to 3 - 5 hours sea exposure,” Ka Dodoy said.

In addition, these yellow fishing boats helped fishing families get back on the water, restoring their livelihood and uplifting their everyday lives.

DepEd Unveils Catch Up Fridays

MANILA, PHILIPPINES - On January 10, 2024 the Department of Education (DepEd) declared a groundbreaking move with the release of DepEd Order no.001 s.2024. This program implemented on January 12, 2024, marks the introduction of guidelines for the implementation of “Catch Up Fridays” that will be rolled out in all public schools across the nation. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered DepEd to raise the Philippines’ performance in the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), whose results showed on December 5, 2023 that 15-year old Filipino children lacked the learning competencies by five to six years.

As stated in DepEd order no.001 s.2024, “Catch Up Fridays” is a program that designates half of each Friday for reading, and the other half devoted to values, peace, and health education. The national reading program provides various activities such as Drop Everything And Read (DEAR), read-a-thons, FORA, and invitation of resource persons.

The DEAR program utilizes interactive methods such as flashcards, singing songs, playing games, and other engaging activities as devised by DepEd to “activate learners’ prior knowledge.”

“He was not disappointed (about the PISA result), but he wants us to keep working hard to improve our performance in PISA. Not only in PISA, but the performance of our students as a whole,”

DepEd Undersecretary for curriculum and teaching

Gina Gonong stated during a briefing at Malacañang.

According to the 2022 PISA, the Philippines

ranked 77 in reading comprehension, maths, and science for the second time out of 81 countries.

The PISA, developed by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, which assesses a 15-year-old’s capacity to reading, mathematics and science knowledge and skills to meet real-life challenges. In order to improve teacher welfare, student nutrition, and the national learning recovery program, among other issues, government agencies must work together to improve student performance overall.

Israel - Hamas War Toll Rises

As Israeli forces continue to battle Hamas militants in the northern part of the Gaza Strip territory, more than 150 Palestinian people were killed and 313 wounded, says the Gaza’s Health Ministry amid the Gaza, Israel and Hamas, Palestine war on Wednesday, as of January 31, 2024.

The initial target of Israel’s ground offensive into the Gaza Strip territory has seen entire neighborhoods destroyed. Israel’s military said its forces killed more than 15 Hamas militants in northern Gaza and targeted militant infrastructure in a school that caused more Palestinian kills.

The latest deaths bring the Palestinian death toll to 26,900 and 65,949 injured since the war began according to the Hamascontrolled Health Ministry. It does not distinguish between civilian and combatant deaths but most of those killed were women and children.

DepEd Relieves Public School Teachers of Administrative Burden

In a momentous move to prioritize teachers’ well-being and enhance the delivery of quality basic education, Vice President and concurrent Education Secretary Sara Z. Duterte has formally released Department of Education (DepEd) Order No. 002 s. of 2024, titled “Immediate Removal of Administrative Tasks of Public School Teachers” on January 26 during the DepEd’s Second Basic Education Report.

This initiative comes as a response to longstanding concerns raised by teachers about the increasing administrative burden, which often detracts from their ability to focus on teaching and student engagement.

According to Duterte’s directive, “DepEd believes that the core of quality basic education is a vibrant and quality teaching workforce. Under the MATATAG Agenda, the department is committed to enhancing the delivery of quality basic education while promoting teacher quality and welfare.”

“Moreover, this undertaking by the department aims to safeguard and enhance the welfare and well-being of public school teachers, providing them with the necessary support to

improve their teaching practices. Geared towards building a conducive environment for successful instructing and learning to flourish,” it included. DepEd clarified that the directive encompasses all government-employed teachers actively involved in classroom instruction on a full-time basis, regardless of their employment status—whether permanent, provisional, or substitute—in all public elementary and secondary schools.

To ensure the successful implementation of these functions, it has been decided to hire temporary staff. A total of 5000 administrative personnel were recruited in 2023, with an additional 5000 administrative personnel planned for 2024.

This strategic decision is accompanied by a corresponding budget allocation to the Maintenance, Operations, and Overhead Expenses (MOOE) to facilitate the recruitment process and ensure that the necessary staff is brought on board.

Alongside this, the organization granted School District Offices (SDOs) a timeframe of no more than 60 calendar days to group schools that lack or have insufficient non-teaching staff. Each cluster should consist of a maximum of three schools.

Prompt dispersal of and strict compliance with this order is coordinated.

Farewell to

FAIR WHEELS

During the last quarter of 2017, a bill was pushed forward with good intentions of modernizing old vehicles. Unknowingly, the was a step on the gas pedal of a treacherous and bumpy ride.

The Philippines has been known for its design on traditional jeepneys as a mode of transportation nationwide however, due to times rapidly changing, the country must cope up with changes of the modern day and that includes our transportation vehicles. The government aims to transform Public Utility Vehicles (PUVs) to modern style vehicles. Nevertheless, this so-called “modernization” comes with plenty of flaws therefore rushing this changes in such a short time would lead catastrophe.

The students of Kabsalan Science and Technology Highschool tend to travel from significantly distant places such as the municipalities like Ipil, Siay or Naga. With most of them being unable to afford cars or even motorcycles, they would have to resolve to riding jeepneys for transportation. If the fare prices would rise due to this project, then the fairness of for the students would be sacrificed. Jeepneys are the cheapest modes of transportation. These made travelling for students, teachers, or employees to travel to their work everyday especially if they are in a budget. This modernization program would be a painful price to the pockets of the people.

The Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Project (PUVMP) adds new features; increasing the quality of our travels however, these upgrades would be costly. Either the jeepney drivers’ profit or the passengers’ pockets would have to be hurt which in either

case is a very bad compromise. Part of the PUVMP also includes the consolidation of owners to corporations and cooperatives for a more proper system for the routes in a time frame. According to the Senate Bill No. 867 the government will help with the loan programs for the investments needed to join the said entities. So why are so many people against it?

Well most of the “many people” aforementioned are jeepney drivers. They are asked to join corporations, cooperatives, or make one themselves. This is not very cheap which explains why they are against it. This will result to people who cannot afford to do so to lose jobs. Even groups like the Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operator Nationwide (Piston) are mocking the bill as “antipoor”. They are essentially forced to incur very big expenditures in such a short amount of time and the government are being terrible at helping the owners financially. Even the fact that the consolidation deadline was rescheduled several times indicates the unreadiness of the people. We are not prepared. Change is a good thing but rushing things with little thought put into the process will have dire consequences. The whole jeepney phaseout should be pushed through eventually. However, the Philippines needs to step on the breaks.

Brand-new curriculum? No educational doom

Over the years, the lack of education has always been a global issue, ranging from different parts of the world. In the Philippines, nine out of ten Filipino students are struggling to comprehend lessons, making it a sign that our youth need amendments in terms of education for the outcome of their future.

The Department of Education (DepEd) was alarmed by numerous complaints by students on social media that sparked a whole controversy. Many students from Kabasalan Science and Technology High School (KSTHS) would say the same exact thing, due to the overloaded number of unnecessary lessons, it added another issue to a giant pile of pre-existing issues that are yet to be solved, such as depression and other stressrelated disorders. Why bother wasting your time on something you can’t even benefit from to an extent?

DepEd saw the need for action and initiated the ‘MATATAG Curriculum’, wherein they cut off the majority of their competencies, making it go down from almost 12k competencies to only 3k. The 7 core subjects have also been changed to 5 to make it less perplexing for students from the K-10 level. But even from the idea itself in the proposal, many mixed reactions from the media are opposed to the changes since it can “potentially change the journey of learning for

affluenceoforders

the worse,” but let you, are all the things learned at school applicable in our lives? Is it necessary to let our KSTHS students suffer just for them to forget what they learned later on? These questions wouldn’t exist if only DepEd took action to address these issues from previous years. Which is why the MATATAG Curriculum is a giant breakthrough and must be forged forward for change. Our future heavily relies on the knowledge we grasp and how we apply it later as we grow and develop our aspirations. Knowledge is ultimately the fundamental key to success, which is why the MATATAG Curriculum is the chance our KSTHS students need to achieve a prosperous future filled with quality education and authenticity, not to mention that it addresses the needs of our institution for us to be well-equipped for the future. It is worth mentioning that it is all about implementing the proposal well, because what is a good plan if it isn’t executed well?

As for the youth, would you rather have the change to learn or remain and have nothing to earn? One thing is for sure: without the implementation of the MATATAG Curriculum, it will lead us to our educational doom.

themetamorphosis LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Glaizelle Marie G. Enopia- Student

Hi Editor!

I just want to ask why do some teachers cross the line of a studentteacher relationships?

According to DepEd Order 49 entitled “Promotion of Professionalism in the Implementation and Delivery of Basic Education Programs and Services” issued almost 2 years ago, relationships between teachers and students outside school matters were highly discouraged to avoid criminal activity between them so it usually is frowned upon however, one may argue that teachers building rapport with their students is a necessary step in teaching their students. Nevertheless, these relationships should be supervised to avoid unethical breach of each other’s personal lives.

Forging the New Breaking Laws:

In the profound words of Nelson Mandela, a South African anti-apartheid activist and the first president of South Africa, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Education is a tool to change our world, however, education can be formed against a country itself, destroying its future and taking its privileges. In 2024, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) announced that they will no longer offer a SHS program in State and Local Universities and Colleges, because according to Prospero De Vera, CHED’s chairperson, “there is no longer a legal basis upon continuing the program.” Enabling them to focus their eyes upon bettering college. So the question is, why should a Filipino like you support an activity that will enhance our country and people’s system?

Some of SUCs and LUCs in the Philippines has miscellaneous, making it more costly and will certainly make a huge change to a family’s financial status. According to Inquirer Net, the average dropout rate in 2023-2024 is 35.15% in the Philippines and most of the reasons are associated with financial problems because the majority of the student’s family cannot sustain them for 13 whole years, forcing students to drop-out.

Furthermore, according to Philippines News Agency, the government will no longer support CHED financially to accommodate the SHS, which means that studying SHS on universities is no longer free; receiving nothing from the government, therefore, it is wise for CHED to discontinue offering SHS program on SUCs and LUCs, focusing on college students alone.

chartingeconomicseas

Inflation’s Impact on Students Silent Struggle:

Inflation, that silent economic force, large over discussions of financial stability and purchasing power. An economic phenomenon that becomes a dominant concern that affects the facets of daily lives of individuals. It is the rising of prices, demands and geopolitical uncertainties which recently becomes a talking point to financial, economical and educational discussions. For students, this phenomenon is challenging; reshaping their educational and financial landscapes in significant ways. How does inflation strike towards students and how can we address this phenomenon?

For many students, especially those navigating higher education, inflation manifests in the form of rising tuition fees. Let us take the graduating students of KSTHS (Kabasalan Science and Technology High School) as an example, they are in their tip of high school education preparing to take off for college to pursue their degrees. Their dream of attaining a college degree, once considered a gateway to a brighter future, is increasingly overshadowed by the specter of higher tuitions. With each passing year, tuition costs escalate, far outpacing the rate of inflation and placing a heavier burden on students and their families. As a result, many aspiring students who want to attain their pursued dreams, face challenges before they even embark on their professional journeys.

But tuition fees are just the tip of the iceberg. Inflation permeates every facet of student life; from the cost of textbooks to the price of basic needs like food and housing. The modest salary of part-time jobs, once sufficient to cover living expenses, now seem inadequate in the face of relentless inflationary pressure. Students are forced to make difficult choices, sacrificing necessities or taking on additional workloads to make ends meet. The destruction on mental health and academic performance

cannot be overstated, as weigh heavily on already stressed minds.

Moreover, inflation conveys existing inequalities within the students. Those from marginalized backgrounds, already grappling with socio-economic challenges, bear the challenges of inflation’s impact. For them, the pursuit of education becomes not just a path to knowledge but a combat zone against systemic economic injustices. As the gap widens between the haves and the have-nots, the promise of equal opportunity diminishes, leaving many talented individuals languishing on the sidelines of society.

Inflation’s effects extend beyond the immediate concerns of students. They have far-reaching implications for the future workforce and the economy at large. Saddled with unprecedented levels of debt, graduates face a daunting financial landscape upon entering the job market.

Addressing the impact of inflation on students requires a multifaceted approach. Policymakers must prioritize affordable education and implement measures to mitigate the rising cost of living. Educational institutions must explore innovative solutions to make learning accessible to all regardless of socio-economic status. And as a society, we must recognize that investing in our students is an investment in our collective future; one that pays dividends far beyond monetary gains.

Inflation may be conceptional to some, but for students, its effects are all too real. As we strive to build a fair and more inclusive society, let us not forget the silent struggle of those who hold the keys to tomorrow’s world. Inflation’s impact on students is not just a financial issue, it is a moral imperative that demands our attention and action.

Former President Rodrigo Duterte’s proposal on the severance of Mindanao from the Philippines

I am not in favor of the separation of Mindanao from the Philippines because I believe it is a process of fixing what is not broken.

I disagree with this stand because I think it is not the fix for the current issues that we are currently facing.

I agree with this because it would create a more peaceful environment especially for the Muslims which has a big population down in Mindanao.

Many students from Kabasalan Science and Technology High School (KSTHS) would say the same exact thing, due to the overloaded number of unnecessary lessons, it added another issue to a giant pile of pre-existing issues that are yet to be solved, such as depression and other stress-related disorders.

But even from the idea itself in the

many mixed reactions from the media are opposed to the changes since it can “potentially change the journey of learning for the worse,” but let me ask you, are all the things we’ve learned at school applicable in our lives? Is it necessary to let our KSTHS students suffer just for them to forget what they learned later on? These questions wouldn’t exist if only DepEd took action to address these issues from previous years. Which is why the MATATAG Curriculum is a giant breakthrough and must be forged forward for change.

Declining Sanity for Better Learning?

The system of education has been clearly ignorant to the matters of students’ mental health as upon observation, it is clear that the competencies they put out are set absurdly high. Students more than ever are at the most risk of developing mental illnesses because of stress. Although students may have shown their endurance despite detrimental circumstances, these standards set by educational institutions seem to be quite questionable because it seems that this is far beyond a matter of students’ learning.

A large portion of the student population are compelled as if forcibly into this dilemma. Standards and expected competencies are set relatively difficult to adhere for most which most likely provokes the development of mental health issues. This is clearly being disregarded such that there are little to no advocacies for these are in sight and instead, prioritizations on making advancements to better learning competencies are much more discernible.

Undoubtedly, the system of education is flawed to some extent, providing more concern to quality of education than students’ sustainability. What has to be understood in this case is; the quality of education may play a substantial role in producing competent individuals, but having a dysfunctional individual will most likely be impossible for achieving such a cause.

Do you feel anxious because of the competencies and standards set by the educational system of the Philippines?

Our future heavily relies on the knowledge we grasp and how we apply it later as we grow and develop our aspirations. Knowledge fundamental key to success, which is why the MATATAG Curriculum is KSTHS students need to achieve future filled education and authenticity, not to mention that it addresses the needs of our institution for us to be wellequipped for the future. It is worth mentioning that it is all about implementing the proposal well, because what is a good plan if it the youth, would you rather have the change to learn or remain and have nothing to earn? One thing is for sure: without the implementation of the MATATAG Curriculum, it will lead us to our educational doom.

Empowering Student Leadership: Nurturing Well-Rounded Achievers for a Bright Future

One plays a crucial role in shaping well-rounded students who are not just academically inclined but also responsibly and socially aware. It is important to teach students and recognize that each and everyone has the ability to lead and take initiative.

Leadership is a quality students must have to thrive in the future. Within the school, it gives a significant impact on students’ performances and outcomes. Almost one fourth of all the effects of school in a student’s life and achievements can be attributed to having skills such as leadership. It creates a positive environment setting high expectations that will give students strategies that will support them towards academic success.

Student leaders often face criticism and skepticism due to their lack of experience and youthful age. Many have voiced their doubts and opinions, questioning students’ capability of leading and believing that they still lack the experience to excel. However, it is important to recognize that effective leadership is not solely determined by years of experience, but also by qualities such as passion, advocacy, and a strong sense of purpose.

Student leaders possess the capacity to instigate significant transformations and create a constructive influence within their communities, irrespective of their age or limited exposure in their field.

It is crucial to encourage students to take a stand and lead themselves to feel a sense of autonomy and light a sense of will not only for them to learn but to also instruct and encourage those around to do better, to unleash creativity and provide a better path not only just for them to walk in.

A Rush Towards Cha-Chaos

Let me begin by saying, “Life is paper-thin and fragile. Any sudden change would rip it open.”

This is a quote by Nina LaCour emphasizing the delicate and vulnerable nature of life. Life is like a piece of paper; just as a nation is also a piece of paper that can be easily torn apart by sudden and unexpected changes.

Which leads me back to the recent proposal of amending the 1987 constitution that sparked heated debates among Filipinos. They say that Charter Change (Cha-Cha) is for the betterment of the nation. While some employ it as a rhetoric of political suspicion, I mean, these opinions would lead our fellow countrymen to and wrong. It is disappointing for we have always longed for a better Philippines, or perhaps a better tomorrow. But this step towards a better nation poses risks to democratic power.

Amidst the debates of left to ponder: Will this amendment truly serve our interests, or will it plunge us into a den of risks and uncertainties?

Congressional Representative Joey Salceda argued that a charter change will boost investors’ confidence and be better for the economy. Well, this is utterly useless! The proposed foreign ownership of educational institutions looms ominously, threatening to transform our education into a commodity, a mere tool for ourselves and our nation?

Opening Philippine higher education to foreign ownership brings potential benefits boost competitiveness and the economy, it exposes institutions to exploitation and divergent interests. sectors that we have opened

particularly because some investors may not necessarily share our democratic values,” former Ateneo School of Government Dean Ronald Mendoza, PhD noted. Will this move sacrifice our democratic values for short-term gains? Focusing on high-quality foreign universities may worsen income inequality, limit access for financially disadvantaged students, and exacerbate brain drain. As we navigate this path, we must ask: Is the price of progress too high, and who will bear the brunt of these decisions?

Mentality remains, a rebellion against colonial chains

JOSHUA

more fun in the Philippines,” a simple yet iconic tagline that we have encountered at one point in our lives, evokes a centuries-old issue that is implanted within our brains from the day our country was colonized until we were emancipated: Colonial Mentality. This phenomenon is glaringly evident in the halls of Kabasalan Science and Technology High School (KSTHS) students. From food trends to the western pop culture we consume, its huge influence among the youth truly questions if it is ‘more fun’ in our country. The illusion of the western lifestyle being superior to our own blinds us to diminishing our Filipino heritage. Now heading back to the tagline, it does not merely serve as a tourism slogan but instead a rallying cry for the youth to embrace our unique identity. Isn’t it time we break free from the shackles of colonial mentality and embrace the beauty of our own culture?

Growing up in a Filipino diaspora, many like me fell victim to the westernization mindset, obliviously glorifying our oppressors’ footsteps. Think about it: Spain had us imprisoned for 333 years and an additional 48 years by America. The amount of exposure has lingered into unrealistic beauty standards, patronizing of imported products, and erasure of dignity among KSTHS students. According to the University of the Philippines (UP), “Philippine society is an artificial one, as Filipinos pretend to be what they are not.” At a young age, conforming to such frivolous and unhealthy ideologies will only strip off the amount of years grasping onto freedom that our country has been battling for. Although it aids their self-esteem, it will unfortunately solidify the ‘all-western’ narrative in future generations, and that is the sole reason why we must lead by example and cut ties between ourselves from generational standards.

“Loyalty and devotion” is what our institution must possess; forging nationalism among KSTHS students can change the trajectory of our mindset and overall promote the prosperity of our country. It is of the utmost importance that the Filipino youth use their talents and journalistic skills to promote and give value to our own culture and identity. Erasing colonial mentality is a huge step that will give way for us to express ourselves without having to fit into a standard that has been left for us to suffer by our colonizers. It will uplift a colorful and proud nation. By doing so, it will accomplish and reinforce the saying that it is indeed more fun in the Philippines—we must collectively discard our internal discrimination and instead unite for progression.

Former Finance Secretary Margarito Teves said the Philippines is the only country in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to have economic restrictions stated in the constitution and that allowing foreign “will generate jobs, improve profits, and create inclusive growth.” One might say that the introduction of foreign ownership will lead to better curriculum and better opportunities for Filipinos abroad. But the is going out into the world, and while they are already, they would become a source of cheap labor. to produce overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) labor, which, in the first place, Filipinos would not have to be if there were enough jobs in the country. What we need is a nationalistic curriculum that is designed to address the needs of the Philippines. Not some Cha-Cha, some may say in the local term as “Cha-ChaPwera.” Well, Cha-Cha is divisive and not worth it.

this point is unnecessary, pointless, and useless; keeping us from working towards a disasterresilient country. The government should stop diverting our attention and focus on the essentials. Redirecting our large amounts of limited resources to charter change at this time will just do more damage. Foreign ownership is also neither investments to come in. There is a famous saying ang pagsisisi” We must consider the possible risks consequences. So, why the rush?

Digi-Dreamers of Tomorrow

I shall begin with this saying, “Nature is equal to nurture”. Well, it is true! Nature starts within yourself, and with your potential, it can be nurtured; setting you up to fly higher.

As reflected in the IMD World Digital Competitiveness Ranking, Filipinos are still ranked lowest in terms of digital competitiveness; the Philippines ranked 56th out of 63 countries. As time passes, it is inevitable that our media landscape is slowly evolving and we too must adapt to it. We, the students, have the skills and talents to hone in this fast-paced digital world. But how can we nurture it? Is it up to us? Indeed, nurturing our potential that is already within us, is the answer. Philippine Business for Education (PBEd) seeks to empower Filipino youth through “Future Skills Now. The future is here and now. Opportunities abound when both the public and private sectors are engaged. And with our youth showing immense potential, all we need to do is work together to pave the way for a brighter future and a digitally skilled and competitive workforce,” PBEd Executive Director Justine Raagas said. With the digital economy in the Philippines expected to grow significantly, initiatives like “Future Skills Now” play a vital role in preparing the workforce for the jobs of tomorrow.

Though the digital world has served us well, it still poses risks that may hinder one’s potential. It is very clear that the youth, specifically the students, have been very dependent on using it negatively. Students tend to rely more on the use of artificial intelligence (AI), which hinders their potential and skills and makes them useless! According to recent statistics from Google Trends, the Philippines ranked 2nd for searching ChatGPT worldwide. However, it is imperative to say that the media landscape has vastly evolved; it has been a medium for young student journalists to share information and showcase their skills, talent and passion for writing. They have been a constant catalyst for charting truth within the field. With these skills and talents and with proper nurturing, can we rise in the rankings? Indeed! Yes! We too, can keep up with the status quo. Filipino students don’t give up just like that; we are fighters. Though the media has been very rampant with issues, from “Piliin mo ang Pilipinas” to “Pipiliin parin ang Pilipinas,” While the digital community presents risks such as over-reliance on AI, Filipino students have the potential to excel by harnessing their skills and talents. With the curriculum by the Department of Education (DepEd), the MATATAG, surely the skills, talents, and knowledge of young students will make a great impact on ranking higher, not just on the Digital Competitiveness Ranking but also the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) ranking. With determination, resilience, and a commitment to honing their skills, they can overcome obstacles, adapt to the changing digital landscape and make significant contributions to the advancement of the Philippines in the global digital arena. So, what are you waiting for Digi-Dreamers of Tomorrow?

Unveiling the Mystery:

The Sudden Surge of Pilchards in Buluan Island

On January 29, 2024, a surge of fishes was found clamouring on the shores of Ipil, Buluan. Several reasons for the occurence of the said phenomenon were brought up.

In the waters surrounding the island of Buluan, marketable fishes can be seen glistening among the waves of Buluan waters. On the last Monday of January, sardines were raked and bagged by the islanders as 400 kilos of these fishes were littered on the coast of the island.

As reported, several causes of this occurrence are due to predators of these fishes, changes in surface water temperatures, a rise in sardine population, and food scavenging.

Sardines or pilchards are small fishes no longer than 25 centimetres in length that thrive in salty water. Sardines are food for bigger fishes in the ocean, when a school of sardines is threatened by a predator, they tend to surge to the shores for protection as bigger fishes cannot manuever properly on shallow waters because of their size. Shallow waters or shorelines can provide obstacles for predators to get caught, while smaller fishes can easily dodge them.

Due to climate change, an alteration in surface water temperatures is felt by fishes.

Swimming towards the coast can provide optimal temperature for them to survive and thrive. Changes in temperatures can alter their metabolism, reproduction, and feeding patterns. It can also influence their prey species distribution, making fishes follw their fod source to shallow waters.

A rise in sardine population can cause them to find abundant food source— and shallows waters might provide them that. When sources of food are over-exploited, fishes will find other places where there is an efficient amount of food. Planktons, their primary food source, are found blooming on the shores of Buluan because the climate provides optimal conditions for them to fluorish, thus, the influx of pilchards. Another reason as to why these fishes were found among coast maybe due to spawning.

Fishes may flood the shorelines for several reasons. Officials had made it clear that this is not a sign of bad omen as there is no scientific proof or facts to support such claims.

Drought floods Kabasalan Municipality

About 71% of Earth’s surface is covered in water. It is easy to imagine that it will always be abundant and inexhaustible. However, clean water or anything else we use for drinking, for bathing, and for irrigating our farms that allows people to live is now scarce. As the drought continues, rivers, lakes, and pipelines are drying up. The water shortages began to affect many areas of the country.

Climate change is altering patterns around the world causing resource shortages and droughts in some areas. With the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Atmospheric Services Administration (PAGASA) reporting a mild El Niño phenomenon, how can we prepare for the worst as we face a devastating drought?

The Municipality of Kabasalan is currently under a water crisis wherein people are struggling to access water. People in the community are deeply affected and heavily inconvenienced by the El Niño. Farmers found their crops withered and household members are struggling with their chores in need of water. This

is on top of us, students, trying to balance our responsibilities and school work as well. This problems may be due to several factors including but not limited to rapid population growth and incapability to seek rapid solutions.

Kabasalan inhabitants are in need of help against this crisis. Therefore, a collective action of the government is needed to solve this problem. Government and community efforts should focus on alternative resources, water conservation, and climate resilience. As we face the challenges posed by El Niño, let us unite in support systems for sustainable practices and actions to combat climate change. Our actions today will determine a better future for generations to come.

The responsibility to protect water, one of the resources of life, lies in our hands.

How many hours do you spend on the internet? In this modern day and age it is quite impossible to imagine life without our pocket-sized portals to a world of limitless connectivity. But...

Wonder if this luxury suddenly vanished due to inevitable phenomenons beyond Earth? Will you live through?

Countless articles, blogs and videos talk about this, how solar storms might cause a near apocalyptic breakdown of civilization, how it would cause the internet to break down and so on and so forth.

Life with AI

Most of us today are very well familiar with AI or Artificial Intelligence. It is very popular to a diverse community of individuals because of the convenience and ease it brings to humans on a daily basis. AI has undeniably enhanced the quality of our modern life, from the advanced technology that brings ease to complex tasks to predictive algorithms. This movement in the field of technology has seamlessly integrated its promising features into our daily routines. Not only did it bring convenience to one’s life but also efficiency in time.

on the strength, flares can cause brief radio blackouts and minor radiation storms. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in their 3-day forecast as of recent, no G1 (Minor) or greater geomagnetic storms are expected.

Minor to Moderate storms could cause inconvenience to us by disrupting power grids, satellites, and GPS signals but are not strong enough to eradicate the internet.

Reassured, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has not released any official statement in regards to the ‘internet apocalypse’ prediction.

o o Faketok : Rampant Growth of

Misinformation

Almost everyone in our generation today, if not all, is familiar with the famous app TikTok, installed in our mobile phones and is used on a daily basis, either to get entertained or to entertain.

Amidst the hype of the said app, are users aware of the idiocracy it brings to our society? How do people, who bask in its free entertainment, pamper the sometimes useless and fake content? How is it becoming an issue as to how gullible people are to believe such information posted on an app that is littered with a wide range of understanding and intellectual influencers that is now dominated by an idiocracy of people who opted to spread false information?

In the near future, Artificial Intelligence will take over the industries that were once dominated and operated by the working hands of humans. Bringing laborious and tedious work to a convenient, time efficient, and to a more productive way. The progress and existence of AI can save us money, time and even lives as we utilize it in the medical field and offers us opportunities to revel in a more customised future to our liking due to its timely progress.

Artificial Intelligence touches every aspect of our daily lifestyle. Investing or capitalising on the growth of AI is a milestone in our lives as it impacts our future— making it better and advance, its potential growth trajectory is boundless.

Idiocracy in this app is somehow downplayed due to entertainment value. People, rather than accepting intellectual stimulation, consume amusing contents. As a result, contents perceived as lacking in depth may be accepted, even celebrated for their entertainment value. Another factor may be because of audience demographics. What one person considers as “idiocracy”, another may find it entertaining or even relevant. Talk about the saying “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure”. The diversity of audiences with different preferences can further blur the lines of what and who is being real and authentic in an online platform that is becoming a source of hypocritical information, negativity and even worse, toxicity.
