In the Garden

Smartweed is a weed even if it’s pretty up close I

paused my shoveling of horse manure the other day to rest my eyes on a most attractive plant growing at the edge of the pile. This semi-vining plant had swollen, slightly reddish joints — almost like knees — to which were clasped lush, lance-shaped leaves. Individually, the flowers were small, each a round knot about the size of a millet grain, but they clustered together along the last couple of inches of each stem like colorful droplets. I quickly reminded myself that the object of my admiration was a weed: smartweed. Once again, that line dividing weeds from garden plants blurred. No, I’m not about to transplant smartweed to my garden. I do realize that much of its attraction was finding beauty where it was unexpected. Smartweed (also known as knotweed) is the common name given to a whole genus of plants, LEE REICH Polygonum, which translates as “many knees.” Many members of this genus are, in fact, garden-worthy plants. That said, a number of members of the Polygonum genus are also weeds. Although it’s a weed, that smartweed I saw gracing the manure pile is easy to root out. Unless you neglect weedSee Garden p. 2D

Halloween themes include creepy carnivals By KIM COOK Associated Press Films , TV shows and stories, including the current hits “It” and “American Horror Story,” have long imagined a dark side to circuses and side shows. No surprise then that they’re a theme for Halloween decorations. Vintage imagery of clowns, beasts, scary rides and carnival denizens provide inspiration for seasonal home decor and parties. Grandin Road, for instance, has a circus tent-style tiered serving dish for treats. A painted resin elephant balances expertly on a stand, a candleholder perched on his back. Vintage-style signs offer palm reading and directions to scary attractions. And there’s a black and white print of a turn-of-the-century fire breather to hang on the wall. (www.grandinroad.com ) Vintage circus and funhouse posters are colorful and eye-catching, and you’ll find a variety of them on Etsy.com. For example: Chicago artist Terry Hoffman’s studio, Parachute 425, offers a gothic art “Freak Show” poster in a palette of carnival hues. (www.etsy.com/shop/parachute425 ) Reproductions of early circus posters with roaring tigers and grinning clowns can be found at www.ringlingonlinestore.com. The designs come from the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus archives. EtsyStudio has vintage circus images you can download and affix to party favors or invitations. (www.etsystudio.com ) At Party City, there’s a carnival sign for the yard inviting visitors to “Step Right Up.” A 12-piece, creepy carnival kit comes with double-sided card-

Dutch design lab blends naturalistic and futuristic

By KATHERINE ROTH Associated Press NEW YORK — The first U.S. museum exhibit devoted solely to the experimental and futuristic work of Dutch design studio Joris Laarman Lab is now on view at the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in New York. The works — mainly furniture, along with an unusual radiator and a newly finished section of footbridge — tend to be curvy and organic in form, many resembling strange yet elegant life forms that have sprouted table legs and chair arms. Laarman and his team of computer scientists, engineers and craftsmen seem at first glance to get their inspiration from the past, with designs reminiscent of Art Nouveau or even rococo. “Gradient Lounge” is a generously sized chaise with voluptuous curves 3-D-printed from polyamide nickel and copper, with matching upholstery, 3D-knit of silk, mercerized cotton and Merino wool. “Bridge Table,” the sleek show-stopper of aluminum and tungsten carbide that greets visitors in the main part of the exhibit, resembles a smooth, silver-colored tree, with four trunk-like legs that separate into branches and extend to support a gleaming, flat surface. But there's nothing oldfashioned about these works. They are not inspired by nature so much as designed using actual mathematical principles of nature — algorithms drawn from plants, say, or multi-celled organisms. These algorithms are used to design the works created using 3-D printers or, in the case of the footbridge, using 3-D-printing robots invented by the team. Then the pieces are finished using a combination of high-tech and artisanal methods, such as binding the

exteriors with nickel, copper or steel, or handcrafting elements out of wood. “The emphasis is on experimentation, and on looking to biology and physics for design inspiration,” explains Andrea Lipps, assistant curator of contemporary design at Cooper Hewitt, who oversaw the exhibit. Videos shown throughout the show help explain how the pieces were made and are crucial to understanding the works, since the techniques are so new, some of them only recently invented by the studio. “When people saw our exhibit in Holland, they got very emotional, and some of them even cried. The future can feel like a very scary place,” says Laarman, a soft-spoken 37-year-old who was in New York for the opening of the show. “Joris Laarman Lab: Design in the Digital Age” will remain on view at the Cooper Hewitt through Jan. 15. It will then travel to The High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Feb. 18-May 13, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, June 17-Sept. 9.

ing unduly long, allowing the plant to root at its knees, a single yank quickly removes an abundance of greenery. Not nearly as easy to shoo away are two smartweeds recently trying to take up residence in my garden. The first newcomer is Virginia smartweed, with relatively large leaves and a flower spike that rises to a couple of feet high. That flower spike is mostly stem, with tiny white flowers spaced widely apart. Virginia smartweed is not pretty, and is more reluctant to leave my garden than smartweed. The roots balk when yanked, so the stem breaks, leaving a significant part of the plant still in the ground and growing. The other newcomer is wild buckwheat, a delicate, ugly vine with nothing particularly distinctive about it except that the ripe seeds resemble buckwheat grains. (Buckwheat is a relative of smartweeds.) Unfortunately, being innocuous is what allows wild buckwheat to insinuate itself into my garden, twining its fine stems around the coneflowers, monkshoods and honeysuckle vines. Once found, wild buckwheat is, at least, easy to yank out. “Mile-a-minute” is a name given to two smartweeds that are among the worst weeds anywhere. The first is a vining plant with prickles on its stems and leaves.

With those prickles and its vining habit, it easily leaps up on shrubs, small trees and structures. The other “mile-a-minute” is sometimes called Japanese or Mexican bamboo because of the resemblance of its thick, hollow, jointed stems to true bamboo. This perennial weed is attractive, with large, heart-shaped leaves, and frothing masses of tiny, creamy-white blossoms appearing in August. Still, it’s a frighteningly aggressive plant. Yet another smartweed frightened me a few weeks ago when I visited a public garden and saw what looked like that first smartweed that caught my eye near the manure pile, except this other plant looked like smartweed on steroids. Rather than billowing on the ground below knee level, it was 6 feet high. I was set at ease when I learned that the plant’s name is heart’s-ease, that it is a cultivated smartweed, and that it was once a popular garden plant. It’s also been called “kiss me under the garden gate.” Heart’s-ease is an annual that is reputedly easy to grow, readily self-seeding once it’s established. Uh-oh.
