Mantel masterpiece moves from rubbish pile to the MFA
This 2009 photo taken in a private garden in rural Belgium demonstrates how eye-catching statuary can be used to personalize flower gardens. Adding antique collectibles to the landscape blends gardening with history. It can be richly rewarding. (AP photo)
Antiques can add personality, focal point to a garden By DEAN FOSDICK Associated Press Adding antique garden ornaments to the landscape blends horticulture with history. One-of-a-kind pieces will personalize your property, and over time may grow into something richly rewarding — financially as well as artistically. "Really outstanding good old pieces such as a swan bench, unusual large decorative urn or piece of sculpture will continue to go up in value, but really more important to my client is the same artistic pleasure that placing a certain piece in their garden gives to them," said Aileen Minor, owner of Aileen Minor Garden Antiques & Decorative Arts in Centreville, Maryland. Some of her garden antiques have been installed in the U.S. Capitol, the Smithsonian Institution, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and in private collections around the United States, Germany, England and France. The definition of "antique" is somewhat elastic but generally applies to objects more than 100 years old. "What makes a piece worth collecting? I would say rarity, design detail, all original parts and age," Minor said. Garden antiques are most commonly made of wicker, metal or stone, and range from pergolas and gazebos to cemetery headstones and fountains, from ironwork, fencing and gates to outdoor furniture and windows. Family heirlooms certainly qualify. Each person has his or her own idea about what constitutes a collectible, said Troy Rhone, owner of Troy
Rhone Garden Design in Birmingham, Alabama. "Typically, I look for pieces that are over 120 years old and have a unique history," Rhone said. "I'm not as concerned about the price because I'm usually looking for a specific item for my gardens." Rhone studies each piece to determine if there are markings to determine who made it, signs of wear and tear, and areas that might deteriorate quickly. "Not many pieces can stand the test of time when exposed to weather, so using pieces that have proved their sustainability is something most people are drawn toward," Rhone said. Many people shape their garden antique collections around a theme. Some may want to match a Victorianera setting, highlighting the looks of their home and neighborhood. Others simply want practical antiques spotted tastefully around their landscape. "Collectors do collect pieces based on forms such as antique hitching posts or interesting sculpture," Minor said. "But more often they are looking to find unusual pieces such as a fountain for a focal point in a garden, or are looking for an attractive antique or vintage bench or settee for seating in their garden." Estate sales, auctions and antique dealers are good places to look, Rhone said. "They can be a great resource when searching for a specific item. Most of the time it's pretty easy to have shipping arranged." Living at a time when so much is mass-produced, it's nice to have something that no one else has, Rhone said. "That is easily accomSee Antiques p. 2D

By TRACEE HERBAUGH Associated Press When interior designer Heidi Pribell spotted a dust-covered mantelpiece in the basement of a client's newly purchased home, it was the start of a long relationship. The ornate white marble mantelpiece, with two caryatids flanking each side, was sitting amid rubble and construction debris. But Pribell, a Boston-based designer and antiques dealer, convinced her client the mantelpiece was worth keeping. That was in 1999. Fast forward to 2011, and Pribell purchased the mantelpiece — roughly 6 feet wide and 4 feet high — from the client. Her "obsession" with the piece led her down a historical rabbit hole in search of
its provenance. And this year, more than two decades after the basement discovery, Pribell sold the once dilapidated mantel to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston for an undisclosed sum. "It was no secret, I adored it," she says. It's the kind of story that makes television shows like "American Pickers" and "Antiques Roadshow" so popular. Many people are looking for the next undiscovered masterpiece. "It's more common than you think," says Ezra Shales, a professor of art history at Massachusetts College of Art and Design. Oncepopular works often get thrown See Mantel p. 2D
Top, this undated photo provided by interior designer Heidi Pribell shows an 1805 marble mantelpiece with two female caryatids in high-waisted Roman costume flanking the fireplace opening and supporting a lintel with a projecting central tablet carved with classical goddesses. Above right, Pribell unfixes the mantlepiece from the wall of the home in Boston. Pribell later sold the mantlepiece to the Museum of Fine Arts. (AP photos)
WHICHCRAFT: Watercolor effects add color to pillows By HOLLY RAMER Associated Press CONCORD, N.H. — With bright splotches or pale washes of color, watercolor paintings certainly can brighten up walls. But why stop there? Applying a watercolor effect to fabric and covering pillows with it lets you display abstract artwork on your sofa or bed as well. Looking to add some decorative contrast to my gray couch, I recently tried three tutorials on achieving a watercolor look on fabric. I then washed and dried the fabric to make sure the colors wouldn't wash out. While the basic techniques — brush strokes on fabric — were similar, they used different materials and slightly different procedures. All were easy enough that I'm brainstorming other ways to put them to use — napkins, coasters, zippered pouches and more. Here's what I found, with each method rated from 1
This Aug. 20 photo in Hopkinton, N.H, shows three pillows created using different techniques and some of the necessary supplies, including fabric painting medium, craft paint and liquid watercolor paint. Creating a watercolor effect on fabric is easy, and depending on the method used, inexpensive. (AP Photo) to 10, with 10 indicating the least expensive, easiest and best results: FABRIC PAINT The Brit + Co website (http://go.brit.co/2uFtdYV ) features a tutorial for making watercolor-effect
table linens, but the method is easily adaptable for pillow covers as well. The directions call for using a sponge brush to dampen small portions of fabric, and then painting on the damp area with a liquid paint that has the consis-
tency of water and spreads like dye. While I followed the directions, I did wonder if it would be easier to just wet the entire piece of fabric at once by running it under water and squeezing out the excess rather than wetting small portions at a time. The paint recommended for this project, Jacquard's Dye-Na-Flow, is considerably more expensive than the materials used in the other techniques (about $5 for 2 oz.), but because it's made for textiles, no other product is needed to make it permanent on fabric. This method produced vibrant colors that stayed true even after washing and drying. COST: 5 EASE: 7 RESULTS: 8

Study: Most people believe owning a home makes sense
Eighty-four percent of Americans believe that purchasing a home is a good financial decision, the highest number in 10 years. Yet six in 10 said that they are concerned about affordability and the rising cost of buying a home or renting in their area. This is according to National Association of Realtor’s 2017 National Housing Pulse Survey, which measures consumers’ attitudes and concerns about housing issues in the nation’s 25 largest metropolitan statistical areas. “This survey makes it clear that most American’s still believe in homeownership and aspire to own a home of their own. Building equity, wanting a stable and safe environment, and having the freedom to choose their neighborhood remain the top reasons to own a home. Yet, Americans consider the lack of affordability as a big obstacle to ownership,” said Pam Caron, President of the Upper Peninsula REALTORS. Concerns over housing affordability show clear demographic divides, especially among unmarried and nonwhite Americans. More than 50 percent of unmarried and non-white Americans view the lack of available affordable housing as a big problem, compared to only four in ten of married and white
Americans. Nationally, 44 percent of respondents categorized the lack of available affordable housing as a very big or big problem. In the top 25 densest markets, more than half see the lack of affordable housing as a big problem, an increase of 11 percentage points since 2015. Upper Peninsula REALTORS® states that lower income Americans, renters and young women most acutely feel the housing pinch. There is also greater concern about affordable housing among the working class (65 percent) than for public servants such as teachers, firefighters or police (55 percent). The survey found that over half of respondents strongly agree that homeownership helps build safe and secure neighborhoods and provides a stable and safe environment for children and family members. “There are many benefits of homeownership, and they resonate more strongly as age increases. Over half of Americans between the age of 50 and 64 believe that home ownership is associated with a stable home environment, which also leads to greater educational success for children,” said Caron. “It’s important that younger Americans also have access to affordable and sustainable homeownership.”

out when society's tastes change, he says. "The cycle of forgetting and then remembering our history is part of the cycle of art history," says Shales. As a trained antiques dealer, Pribell knew how to qualify items in terms of good, better, best. (Museum-quality artworks are, in general, sold in excellent condition
with original fixtures and the like.) This piece, Pribell says, was "exquisite." "It was all about the quality and depth of the carving," she says. The mantelpiece also had a story befitting a museumquality artwork. The Carrera marble mantelpiece, crafted in 1805 in Italy, had stayed in the same building on Joy and Beacon Streets, across from Boston Common, through three different owners.

describes her mission as "creating lovely for less," and her technique for watercolor pillows was indeed the least expensive of the three I tried. Her method involves mixing about three drops of acrylic craft paint with 10 drops of fabric painting medium and a few tablespoons of water, and then painting onto fabric. Small bottles of craft paint can often be found for about a dollar each, and fabric painting medium — which produces a washable, permanent substance than adheres better to fabric — for a dollar or two more. This technique was really easy, but unfortunately, my results were somewhat disappointing compared to the image shown in the tutorial. I painted abstract circles with light red, pink and lavender, but as the fabric began to dry, the colors faded to pale pink, and all
It was originally commissioned by diplomat and art importer Thomas Appleton, who acquired it for wealthy apothecary Dr. John Joy, whose mansion was on Joy Street. During Appleton's time as a rising diplomat in Europe, he imported many artworks to the United States, including a bust of George Washington that's in the White House. "He was a true visionary," Pribell says. "He was so sure of his tastes."

so uses fabric painting medium to make the paint colorfast. While the tutorial calls for using solid watercolors, I used student-grade liquid watercolors because that's what I had on hand. In this method, you paint with watercolors on the fabric and then, using a clean brush, swipe over the fabric with a mixture of fabric medium and water. That adds an extra step compared to the technique using craft paint, but the results were better. I don't know if that's because of the type of paint or
t h e technique, however. Like the fabric paint method, the colors stayed bold as they dried, and after a trip through the washer and drier. COST: 7 EASE: 6 RESULTS: 7
