In the Garden
Matching the cure to the pest problem T
he caller on the other end of the phone was worried: Her apple trees had suffered severely last year from cedar-apple rust disease, and she wanted to know how to keep them from being attacked again. I can offer two important pieces of advice, whether you’re growing apple trees or any other plant. 1. PLANTS VARY IN PEST RESISTANCE When putting in new plants, consider pest-resistant varieties, if they exist. In the case of apples, Golden Delicious and its progeny generally are most susceptible to rust disease. Some apples, such as the tasty variety Liberty, are resistant to rust as well as LEE REICH other major apple diseases. Your plants may be spared a particular pest problem because that pest never makes it to your garden. Cedar-apple rust, for example, is pretty much absent where susceptible juniper species — Eastern red cedar, Rocky Mountain juniper, creeping juniper and common juniper — are not native. Powdery mildew, on the other hand, is among those pests that threaten the health and beauty of phlox plants almost everywhere from midsummer on. However, varieties such as Katherine and David are among those resistant to it. If your hybrid tea roses are being decimated by blackspot disease, another frequent unwanted visitor to gardens, why not try the old-fashioned, soft pink Blush Moss or the English rose Tamora, whose cuplike blossoms are the color of peach ice cream? Neither of these roses is particularly affected by blackspot. 1. IF SPRAYING, CHOOSE AN APPROPRIATE SPRAY My worried caller was not interested in replanting and waiting for new trees to bear fruit. She said she might try an oil spray to bring the needed relief. Which brings us to our second bit of advice on pests: Before you spray, make sure you’ve got the right one. In the case of cedar-apple rust, spraying oil would be a waste of time. Too many gardeners rush to the garden store when a pest threatens and reach for anything with “-icide” on the container. But “insecticides” control only insects; “miticides” control only mites; “nematocides” control only nematodes; and “fungicides” control only fungus diseases. And a given insecticide does not necessarily control all insects; the same goes for the other “-icides.” So spraying a fungicide on your rose, whose leaves are mottled white because of a virus disease, would be for nought. Spraying B.t., short for bacillus thurengiensis, can be an environmentally sound way to control caterpillars, See Pests p. 2D

Cohousing puts the emphasis on neighborhood By TRACEE HERBAUGH Associated Press When Joanna Vander Plaats moved with her two young daughters to Grand Rapids, Michigan, nearly eight years ago, she wanted to find a friendly and welcoming neighborhood. The family’s move from Kalamazoo, a home they’d always known, was nerve-wracking. They didn’t know a single person in their new city — much less a friend who might watch the kids or come over for dinner. As Vander Plaats, 30, was researching Grand Rapids, she came across a cohousing development, Newberry Place. It was a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood with 20 separate townhouses that shared some common spaces, including a clubhouse, where there were weekly dinners for residents. “Cohousing made it easier to start a new life,” Vander Plaats said. Two months after she and her girls moved in, they knew the neighbors in all the other 19 houses. “I knew a little about each of them,” she said. “I knew their family dynamics. It helped me feel like Grand Rapids was home a lot quicker.” What exactly is cohousing? It’s a community-focused living arrangement, where residents share space, chores and fellowship. The idea started in Denmark in the 1960s and has spread across Europe and the U.S. “It’s about sharing resources and engaging in your community,” said Thomas Barrie, a professor of architecture at North Carolina State University and author of the new book “House and Home: Cultural Contexts, Ontological Roles” (Routledge). Cohousing developments and starter groups — those who get together to plan a new site — have been growing in America, Barrie said. It’s a promising model for those who want to “age in place,” he said. Older folks can live independently for longer because there is a steady stream of neighbors to check in on them. Yet cohousing hasn’t reached its full potential in the U.S., Barrie believes. “It’s not something that’s been capitalized yet in America,” he said, because housing in the U.S. has been defined as “your private realm.” At Newberry Place, parking is toward the back and on one edge of the development. What you see while walking through the neighborhood is porches and front doors. It’s built to foster accidental interactions between neighbors. This was appealing to Dan Miller, 66, a retired professor at Calvin College in Grand Rapids. Miller and his

There are weekly dinners in the clubhouse, and neighbors sign up for a turn to cook. At some developments, neighbors share yard work or childcare duties. As with a condominium, residents pay into an association fund for common-
space upkeep. But at many cohousing developments, the impromptu events are just as important as the planned ones. On Friday evenings, neighbors at Newberry tend to gather at the common house or outside on the deck with wine and snacks. “We’ll complain about our week or we’ll share laughs,” Miller said. “It’s not organized by anybody but it’s kind of a custom. It’s pleasant.”

RIGHT AT HOME: A fresh take on shaggy-chic fringed decor
By KIM COOK Associated Press Like coquettish long eyelashes or chic bangs, fringe has a beguiling style that draws it every so often back into the trend orbit. Now is one of those times in fashion and home decor, thanks perhaps to our current flirtation with eclecticism and our ongoing love affair with the retro ‘70s. You’ll see many variations on fringe. Wispy bits softening the edges of textiles; thick hedgerows accentuating the lines of a rug or basket; longer curtains of fringe that make a piece of art or furniture that much more intriguing. Urban Outfitters, for instance, has a Moroccan pouf covered in creamy cotton, with sequined trim and several wraps of woolly fringe. There’s a bolster that marries pompoms, tassels, fringe and geometric embroidery. A wall hanging from India combines several clusters of fringe in a palette of blush, cream, apricot and gray. For the bedroom, a soft cotton comforter, in charcoal, rose, tan or cream has rows and rows of dainty eyelash fringe. There’s a throw blanket and pillow shams with the decorative trim, too. (www.urbanoutfitters.com ) Designer Nate Berkus has added fringe to several collections he’s done for Target, including lampshades and a diminutive stool. This season, there are fringed table
runners and throw pillows, and a little basket with a dapper fringe belt made of lampakanay, a Philippine fiber. (www.target.com ) “Fringe is one of my favorite embellishments,” says Berkus. “It always seems luxe to me.” Extra-long fringe creates a saucy skirt on a handwoven, black-and-white triangle pouf at West Elm. A Moroccan-inspired shag rug in black and gray with a sapphire streak and fringed edges brings drama to the floor. And a cotton bedspread with a Peruvian-inspired circle print is bordered with a thick fringe that punctuates the print. (www.westelm.com ) At Toronto design house Elte, a Belgian linen pouf is dressed up with bone buttons and Tibetan wool fringe. (www.elte.com ) From Arhaus’ Boho pillow collection, there’s a woven lumbar pillow trimmed in black or ivory fringe in a contemporary yet playful motif. (www.arhaus.com ) And if you’re ready for something a little more dramatic on the fringe front, consider designer Laura Kirar’s Guernica lounge chair. (www.mcguirefurniture.com ) The chair’s back is dressed in a full mane of black or brown leather fringe. Smooth and textured laces are needled and knotted into 3,500 holes on the cane back, and the effect is spectacular. “I love that it’s strong and opinionated,” says Kirar.

Pests from 1D but would have no effect on cedar-apple rust. “Pesticide” is a very general term. For effective control, match the specific pesticide to the general kind of pest — or even better, the specific pest — that’s gotten out of hand. Garden sprays are available that contain mixtures of insecticides and
fungicides. Such sprays are easy to use, but they have a financial and environmental downside. They cost more and you’ll likely be dousing the environment with some pesticides that are not needed. Always read the fine print on the label, whether it’s a mix of pesticides or a single pesticide, to find out just what pests will be controlled. Not only does this ensure that your spray is effective, but it keeps you on the right side of the law. It is illegal to spray for any-
