Weed control starts with the seeds

By DEAN FOSDICK Associated Press Weed seeds are among the most patient organisms in nature. Many weeds can produce thousands of seeds per plant per year, and those seeds might lie dormant for decades, just waiting for the right conditions to sprout. If you want to control weeds, then find where these seeds accumulate — in “seed banks.” “Gardeners should care because that’s where all their seeds are coming from,” said Ed Peachey, a weed science specialist with Oregon State University Extension. “If you don’t prevent weeds from producing seeds, then you’ll wind up with large seed banks, and always fighting with the weeds that emerge from those seed banks.” Weeds are unwanted because they are considered unattractive in manicured yards, they spread quickly, and they muscle aside desirable plants from lifegiving sunlight, nutrients and moisture. “Understand what you have in your garden and then decide what to get rid of,” Peachey said. “Some weeds are incredibly well adapted to gardens and they compete.” Weed seeds or banks accumulate in neglected lawns, near downspouts and shaded areas, around pathways and driveways, in newly cultivated ground — even under decks, despite the scarcity of sunlight. Weeds have a number of things in common, said Sandra Mason, an extension horticulturist with University of Illinois Extension. “They go through their

life cycle rapidly, flower quickly, produce vast quantities of seeds, and have some seed adaptations for travel by wind, water or animals,” Mason said in a fact sheet. Soil movement and changes in water content invigorate annual seeds, Peachey said. “Most weed seeds don’t live particularly long, a few years perhaps. But there always are a few that can linger.” A dandelion may produce 15,000 seeds per year, purslane more than 52,000, while pigweed can leave behind over 117,000, according to Colorado State University Extension horticulturists. Purslane and pigweed seeds can persist in the soil for 20 and 40 years respectively, they said. One Arctic plant was successfully germinated after its seeds lay frozen for 32,000 years in the Siberian tundra, said Russian scientists who used radiocarbon dating to validate their claim. Weed management options are many and varied. “Hand-weed in small spaces,” Peachey said. “Use organic mulches to keep weeds from emerging and producing seeds later. Create stale seed banks by disturbing the soil, using a flaming tool to burn off whatever weeds sprout up, and then do your planting.” It takes two or three weeks for seeds to emerge though, so that scorchedearth policy may delay spring gardening. “Use specialized hoes,” Peachey said. “Triangular hoes or hoop hoes are good at getting the entire weed root out.” See Weeds p. 2D

GETTING CREATIVE

Rooms that leave you inspired By KATHERINE ROTH Associated Press Spaces where creativity happens are utterly unlike other rooms, artists and designers say. Whether at home or elsewhere, these deeply personal spaces often feel like they’re in flux, with interiors more curated than decorated. They often feature natural objects and personal totems. They can feel messy, but also like a window into an artist’s mind. “I am always mesmerized by what goes on in these creative spaces. They are very special and often very private. The hardest part is convincing people to let you in,” says Paul Barbera, who has photographed over 200 studios of both established and up-and-coming designers, architects and artists around the world. His most recent book is “Where They Create, Japan” (Frame Publishers, Amsterdam). Matthew Waldman, founder of a watch company called Nooka, is one of the designers featured in the book. “I like to have a lot of stimulation in my creative space, with things to touch and look at, things that inspire me, and lots of plants,” says Waldman. Louesa Roebuck, who, with Sarah Lonsdale, wrote and photographed “Foraged Flora” (Ten Speed Press), featuring images and descriptions of

but many include plants or pets, quirky objects, and odd assortments of objects grouped in visual vignettes. “A lot of the things we collect connect us to other places and times, like relics or fossils, shells,

stones or bits of inspiration,” Roebuck says. “My studio is full of totems.” The rooms also tend to have plenty of natural light or access to the outdoors. “My home is very pared down but the desk in my studio area is covered in things,” says Lonsdale. “The most creative spaces seem to have the messiest desks. I love those desks. And many creative people spread things out across walls or floors. It’s a way to visualize. It’s work in progress.” Rachael Weiner, senior style and market editor at Real Simple magazine, says anyone can foster creativity in their home office or studio space. “While a home is a place to foster tranquility, to relax and recharge, a creative space is the opposite. You want it to be comfortable, but you also want the energy to be dynamic,” she says. Some of her tips: PERMISSION TO BE MESSY “In a home you want things as orderly as possible, but in a creative space you want to give yourself permission to diversify the way you organize things. Contact lists should be in order, but you might want to make stacks of books or drawings, or spread things out as you think about them,” Weiner says. FLUID DISPLAY

than a tenth of an acre. “Very few (chemicals) that are labeled for garden use are practical,” he said. Be observant. When weeds make seeds, they make them fast. “It’s important to watch

weeds through the entire summer season,” Peachey said. “If some get by, and if you can’t dig them out, then at least cut off their seed heads. It’s cheaper to get rid of the seeds than it is to fight the weeds.”

SPACE “The more fluid the display space the better,” she says. “Consider putting up a bulletin board or gallery ledges so you can refresh what kind of work you have up depending on the projects you’re working on.” LET NATURE IN Natural light and natural objects “connect us to the universe and stimulate the brain. If there’s no outdoor space nearby, consider including plants or even a bowl of fruit. Living natural things really change the feel of a space,” Weiner says. PERSONAL AND INSPIRATIONAL TOTEMS “In a creative work space, anything that creates joy or reminds you of what you love belongs there,” she says. “Favorite colors or textiles, photos from a happy family vacation or objects that bring back special memories. These help inspire.” EXPAND YOUR IMAGE OF WORK SPACE “Depending on the kind of work you do, a hammock chair or cushions on the floor might be a better fit than an office chair,”

filled with whatever it is — and organized in whatever way you want — that sparks your creativity.”

By MELISSA KOSSLER DUTTON Associated Press Including recliners in home decorating projects used to be an interior designer’s nightmare, says Bonnie Lewis, founder of 55+ TLC Interior Design in Scottsdale, Arizona. But the easy chair has gotten a face lift, thanks largely to Baby Boomers. “Before, this furniture was strictly about the function — meaning it could recline, but there wasn’t much to the aesthetics of it,” says Lewis, whose firm specializes in design for older adults. “Because Boomers want that cleanerline look, it’s pushing the manufacturers to get on board.” Recliners used to come in one profile: big and bulky, says Bruce Birnbach, president and CEO of American Leather in Dallas, Texas. “Either you wanted that look or you didn’t.” Today, he and his competitors offer recliners “in every size and shape and style,” he says. Like other manufacturers, La-Z-Boy, which introduced the recliner in 1928 and for years built a reputation more on comfort than on style, has added automation to the chairs, and offers models that are smaller and more stylish. But La-Z-Boy will never stop making the traditional chairs that made the company’s name synonymous with recliners, says Penny Eudy, product manager of upholstery for La-Z-Boy in Monroe, Michigan. “We want to a cast a wider net to attract that more stylish consumer and get them coming in, but we want to do it without alienating the customers that we’ve always had,” she says. Eudy believes recliners are the ideal chair for the modern home: “We all are living more casually and more comfortably than we ever have,” she says. The trend toward open living spaces means that customers are looking for furniture that’s less formal but still eyecatching, says Erin Berg, an associate editor at Furniture Today magazine in Greensboro, North Carolina. Open floor plans mean there’s nowhere to hide an ugly recliner, and no place for a formal chair that’s not comfortable, she says. New recliners’ smaller footprint gives homeowners more flexibility, Berg says. Some manufacturers offer a “wall-hugger” feature: The seat moves forward when it reclines, allowing the chair to be placed against a wall. Many reclining chairs, sofas and sectionals now plug in or run on battery

packs, allowing them to do everything from charging your phone to cooling your drink, while providing an articulated head rest and lumbar support. “Today’s recliners have become sleek and smooth-functioning, combining designer-quality looks with engineer-quality operations,” says Patricia Bowling, a spokeswoman for the American Home Furnishings Alliance, in High Point, North Carolina. “The Baby Boomers love their gadgets. They love being connected and they are doing that in every room of the house.” Still, comfort remains a priority — particularly for an aging generation that’s active and has “a tendency to overdo it,” she says. Berg says there are many more options now for how the chairs’ backs recline and the footrests extend. Four out of every 10 recliners purchased in 2014 were for Boomer households, according to a Furniture Today study released in 2015. The variety of new fabrics and styles — including some recliners with legs — means that designers no longer shy away from the chairs, Lewis says. “Before, when a client wanted a recliner, you worried that it was going to ruin the whole look,” she says. Lift chairs, which rise to help the occupant stand up, have also become more versatile and attractive, she says, moving from institutions into homes as homeowners look for ways to age in place. “They’re not as slick as the plain recliner, but they’re getting there,” she says.
