This undated photo shows an adult ladybug taken on a property near New Market, Va. You can buy ladybugs to clear plants of aphids but the colorful predators have a habit of disappearing soon after release. Adult Ladybugs, like the one shown here hunting for aphids and mites, are great predators but their larvae are even better. Ladybug, where have you gone? Aphid fighters tend to roam

By DEAN FOSDICK Associated Press To some casual observers, ladybugs (or lady beetles) are colorful symbols of good luck —harbingers of fortune and fame. Gardeners value them for their utility as ravenous insects that prey upon plant pests. They buy them by the hundreds online or from garden centers, and then free them to hunt. But many entomologists believe that commercially sold ladybugs are inefficient for biological pest control, and introduce disease-carrying pathogens to their wild counterparts. They also fear that field-gathering the dormant insects by the millions shrinks the population available to farmers, prompting heavier pesticide use. The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, a pollinator preservation group in Portland, Oregon, doesn’ t recommend buying or releasing non-native lady beetles, especially for yards and gardens, said Executive Director Scott Black. “Not only do they not really work —there are lots of potential negative implications for beetles where they are collected and where they are released,” Black said. Many lady beetle species overwinter in large numbers in California’ s Sierra Nevada. “In the spring, adults fly down from the mountains to the valley and coastal areas where they play an important role in controlling plant pests,” Xerces says. “Large quantities of lady beetles (in the genus Hippodamia) are collected every year at overwinter sites in the Sierra Nevada and sold commercially.” While it may be cheap to buy a bag or more of ladybugs to patrol residential landscapes, it’ s difficult if not impossible to keep these miniature mercenaries from wandering. Adult beetles need to migrate before they start feeding or laying eggs, so they quickly head to parts unknown when released. Whitney Cranshaw, a professor and Extension entomologist with Colorado State University, has released lady beetles into his greenhouse several times to feed on aphid-infested plants, only to report negative results. “Twenty-four hours later I can find about six in the greenhouse after releasing a bag of 1,500,” Cranshaw said. “Which means 1,494 largely vanished somewhere in that period. And I do not see any laying eggs for a few weeks.” Mature ladybugs will feed on 20 to 25 aphids per day, but their late-stage larvae will consume 10 times that number, making them far more effective predators, he said. When improving habitat in your yard or garden, add plants that appeal to beneficial insects as they phase through all of their successive life cycles, Cranshaw said. Learn how to identify the insects as they mature. “Don’ t kill them just because you don’ t recognize them,” he said, a reference to the fierce-looking ladybug larvae. See Garden p. 2D

This adult Praying Mantis shown here is an effective predator but indiscriminate in what it eats. Mantis will stalk any insect within reach, including bees and butterflies. Preparing your teen for college dorm life?

DON’T OVER-PACK By LISA A. FLAM Associated Press You’ ve shared a home for a lifetime and felt secure knowing that child of yours was just a bedroom away. Now, you’ re shipping your teenager off to begin a new chapter in an unfamiliar place, possibly hundreds of miles away — all without you. Dropping a child off at college for the first time can be an emotional transition. And in that overwhelming run-up to the eventual goodbye, overbuying and over-packing are easy mistakes to make as parents hope to inoculate their teens against every collegiate scenario. “Sometimes we don’ t know what to do with emotions,” so parents channel them into packing and shopping to feel productive, said Beth Miller, a coordinator for residence life at University of Wisconsin-Madison who has been involved in campus life for the past 17 years. “But sometimes parents are purchasing things based on emotion and not necessarily based on need.” It’ s natural to want to send your child with all the dorm supplies necessary to start college off right, and overbuying is “an expression of love,” says Mary Dell Harrington, cofounder of Grown & Flown , a website for parents of high school and college

Those aren’ t things we can impact at all as their parents. What we can do is help with the comforter shopping.” Some packing tips from the experts:

Before the first set of twin XL sheets is even selected, the first stop on the road to buying just the right amount should be the college website. Many universities list the items and amenities that come with each room. Some include dimensions for the room, the underthe-bed space and the best size carpet for the space. They also list prohibited items (possibly certain appliances) and have a pack-

ing list. Check whether the room comes with a trash can or lamp. Is there a convenient printing center or does the student need a printer? Will your student walk down the hall, or across the quad, to do laundry? Some campuses allow twinkle lights, others don’ t. “Each one of these things will determine what your purchases will likely be,” HarSee Dorms p. 2D

Childhood home of ‘The Boss’ sells for $255,000 FREEHOLD, N.J. (AP) —A childhood home in New Jersey where Bruce Springsteen lived for seven years has been sold for $255,000. The Asbury Park Press reports the two-family home at 39 Institute Street in Freehold was listed for $269,900 in November. The Springsteens lived on the left side of the house from 1955 to 1962. Springsteen wrote in his autobiography that he recalled being 7 years old in that house when he saw Elvis Presley appear on “The Ed Sullivan Show” in 1956.

Garden from 1D While ladybugs are collected almost exclusively in the wild, most other predatory insects sold commercially are reared in insectaries, Cranshaw said. “Praying mantises are popular, but I’ m not high on them, either,” he said. “They’ re generalists and will eat anything out there, including bees and butterflies.” Cranshaw suggests using green lacewings, predatory midges and parasitic wasps for insect control. Look up “beneficial insectaries” for suppliers.

Steam features are hot in home appliances vacuum sealer in the appliance suite as well. Closets and laundry rooms are also getting steamed up. Lowe’ s spokesperson Megan Lewis says customers find the concept of cleaning with steam instead of chemicals appealing. CHI has a convenient valet steamer that would save time; hang your item, fill the tray with water, zip up the garment bag and turn it on. You can finish getting ready while the steamer does an outfit refresh. There are smaller portable steamers, too, like Joy Mangano’ s fabric steamer, which can be toted in a suitcase and comes in several colors. Conair’ s Turbo ExtremeSteam gets Good Housekeeping’ s top rating. Black & Decker’ s Advanced Steamer has an extra-long cord, which is handy for drapery, and has attachments for upholstery and delicate fabrics. In the laundry room, Samsung has a steam washer and dryer that Maynard says are performing well. Maytag and Electrolux also have versions. Steam washers heat water to a considerably higher temperature —over 200 degrees Fahrenheit —than regular hot water settings of about 170 degrees. To blast out stains and allergens like pet dander or pollen, and to thoroughly sanitize, steam may be desirable. Steam also softens fabrics, resulting in less wrinkling at the end of the wash cycle. Steam dryers perform a similar function by reducing wrinkling. Electrolux , Frigidaire and Whirlpool have models. Lewis says multi-purpose canister-style steam cleaners are also popular. “Ewbank’ s Steam Dynamo can be used on kitchen countertops, ovens, tiles and living room windows,” she says. “You can even use the large floor head on hard floors and car-

By KIM COOK Associated Press What hot in home appliances these days? That’ s a steamy story, say industry watchers. Across several categories —cookery, cleaning and personal care —steam features are the big news. “I first started seeing them in laundry products,” says Nigel Maynard, an editor based in Hyattsville, Maryland, who covers the kitchen, bath and architecture industries. “Then I started seeing them on dishwashers. Now they’ re everywhere.” Steaming has been used by professional operations like restaurants, cleaners and spas for years, and the technology is now available for consumer home products. Maynard posits that the appeal of steam is part of a larger trend toward outfitting the home with professional equipment. “Interest in cooking shows is at an all-time high, and people want to channel their inner celebrity chef. Buying these steam appliances —along with (other high performance gear) —is another way to feel like a pro in your house,” he says. Some experts believe that steam cooking is healthier because the nutrients and flavor of proteins, vegetables and grains are sealed in. “Not only can you prepare healthier meals,” says Wolf’ s marketing manager Jeannine Washkuhn, “but a true convection steam oven will monitor and adjust steam and airflow to prepare amazing roasts, reheat leftovers perfectly, and everything in between.” Wolf’ s oven combines convection and steam. A series of recipes pre-programmed into the oven means you can just load in the prepared food and push the button; the oven assesses which modes will yield the best results at the time you want everything ready. Wolf also has a steamer module with sous-vide capabilities that will proof bread dough and slow cook, and a multi-function countertop cooker. There’ s a

“Sometimes we’ re simply too triggerhappy,” Black said. “We’ re trying to control things we don’ t really need to control. Sometimes all you have to do is spray pests like aphids and spider mites off (with water) or use some insecticidal soap. “Be more attuned to natural systems,” he said.

Above, this undated photo provided by Sub-Zero and Wolf shows Wolf's M series convection steam oven, which combines the two methods in one.
