THE CLEAR FAVORITE There’s beauty in a tree’s burl A s you glance up into tree limbs, perhaps searching for some sign of spring in a swelling flower bud, your sight might be arrested by fat, rounded growths on the bark. On some trees, these hard, woody outgrowths — called burls — stand out on an otherwise clear trunk like a goiter. On other trees, the whole trunk might be covered with these masses. If you’ve never noticed these growths before, don’t be alarmed. They cause little or no harm to the tree.

WHAT MAKES A BURL That said, burls might — just might — indicate that the tree has been unLEE REICH der stress. All sorts of things have been implicated as the cause of burls. For instance, a burl could grow in response to a limb rubbing against the bark, to chewing by insects or some other physical injury. Perhaps the tree experienced or is experiencing some environmental stress — temperatures too cold or too hot, not enough food or not enough sunlight, for example. Diseases have also been held responsible for burls. However, no pathogens are found inside burls when they are cut open. Still, a pathogen could have done its job of inducing a burl, and then skipped on to other adventures. We could also blame genetics, because some tree species are more prone to developing burls than others. Redwoods are renowned for their burls, which are often sold as souvenirs. ODD STEM GROWTH We do know, though, how burls develop. Along any stem are buds that can elongate to become shoots, and each of these shoots similarly has buds that can become shoots themselves. Obviously, not all buds on a plant stretch out; some remain dormant, at least for a while. In the case of a burl, instead of dormant buds expanding into straight shoots, they grow inward, twisting and turning under the bark and never emerging as branches. On the rare occasion when a shoot does elongate from a burl on a mature tree, the shoot usually expires from lack of sufficient light. Interestingly, redwood burls frequently sprout when cut from the tree and placed in a pan of water, almost as if the water reminds See Burls p. 2D

Acrylics a versatile furniture option By MELISSA KOSSLER DUTTON Associated Press Clear the way for acrylics. Furniture makers are using the see-through material for everything from couch legs and bed posts to tables and footstools. It’s a way to add drama to a room without overloading it, said Sheila Schmitz, an editor with Houzz, an online source of interior design photos and decorating ideas. She said acrylics are being used to update many different kinds of furniture, to fit any budget. “It’s really very versatile,” added Michelle Lamb, editorial director with The Trend Curve, an industry observer in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. “Because it’s clear, it can become a showpiece or just an accessory.” The pieces are lighter, stronger and less expensive than glass, said Tara Donovan, style director at Wayfair, an online home goods store. “It’s more malleable and easy to work with, so it can be worked into more shapes,” she said. Acrylic is ideal for small rooms because it doesn’t make the space look or feel crowded, Schmitz said. “It can be a functional piece that doesn’t add visual clutter,” she said. Clear furniture also can make small spaces feel more open and inviting, said Karen Mills, an interior designer with Interiors by Design, Inc., in Lenexa, Kansas. “It’s lighter and brighter,” she

(Stacey Van Berkel/Bernhardt Furniture Company via AP) said. “It bounces that light around, whereas darker pieces soak up all your sunlight.” Even something as simple as an acrylic chair can make a statement in a room, as designer Philippe Starck proved more than a decade ago when he introduced his Ghost Chair — a clear replica of the classic Louis XV armchair, Mills said. The chair helped launch the resurgence in acrylic furniture, she said. Now, you can find clear

chairs to fit any room. “There’s probably an acrylic chair for just about any taste,” Schmitz said. Add a vibrant cushion, and clear chairs — along with benches and footstools — can become the centerpiece of the room, Mills said. “When you put fabric on it, it just looks like it’s floating. It adds a touch of fantasy,” she said. “It’s fantastic.” Acrylic really shines when accessorized with pops of color and texture,

agreed Emily Arnow, editor at AllModern.com, an online furniture store. “It’s there, but not really there, so it’s a great complement to bolder pieces that are also there to make a style statement,” she said. “The key to decorating with clear acrylic is playing with perception and contrast.” Clear legs on couches, chairs and cabinets can “create a look of suspended animation,” Lamb said. “It may take you a second or two to realize what’s going on. Once you figure it out, you can’t stop looking at it.” Or if you prefer, the pieces can take a backseat to other furnishings in the room. “You’re getting the function without taking up much visual space,” said Donovan. Designers often use acrylic when they want to highlight another exceptional element in the room, she said. Clear tables are a way to accentuate beautiful carpets, she said. Clear chairs will not detract from an ornate desk or a special dining table. Acrylic’s “unique silhouettes can be truly magnificent, allowing them to act as the focal point if you want a statement piece — think acrylic table or grouping of ghost chairs,” she said. “Yet their transparent appearance can also be very delicate if the space has really vibrant pieces such as a vintage rug or piece of art. Ultimately, it’s all about how you pair the acrylic furnishings within a space and where you want the focus to be.”

Garage a mess? Tips for tackling a daunting job

By KATHERINE ROTH Associated Press Garages have a way of going from deep storage to cluttered chaos. Clearing out the flotsam and organizing what remains can be daunting or downright overwhelming. But with careful planning and a specific game plan, most garages can be organized in a day or a weekend, experts say. And if the job’s simply too much, consider hiring a professional organizer. “I don’t think you can just wake up one morning and say, ‘I’m going to organize the garage,’ and be successful at it,” says Regina Lark of the Los Angeles-based company A Clear Path: Professional Organizing and Productivity. “You need planning. You need muscle power. You need people around you for support. And you will need some basic information and possibly supplies before you begin.” PLAN, ENLIST AND PREPARE The first step, says Lark, is to look at your calendar and set aside a full day for the job. Choose a starting and ending time, and make sure someone will be there to support you. “It’s got to be the only

thing on the calendar that day, for everyone involved. It’s usually a very uncomfortable task, so get help. Bring in friends. Offer pizza at lunch, wine at the end of the day, and reciprocate,” she says. Lark suggests that you and your support team set aside three or four hours to take things out, sort them into piles and make quick decisions about what to keep. Then set aside another three or four hours to put everything back in an organized way, and make a quick trip to the donation center. Before you start, she says, consider: “Do you have enough trash bags or do you need a small Dumpster? Do you have spare boxes where you can put things to be donated? What time does the donation center close? Is your driveway clear so that you can take everything out of your garage and sort it there? Will you need shelving or storage bins or peg boards? It’s better to have too many supplies and return a few things later than to have progress halted because you don’t have what you need.” DECISIONS, DECISIONS Understand and embrace the decision-making pro-

cess. “It’s helpful to stand in your garage before you start and really connect with the reality of what is there,” Lark says. “The speed and success of the task really boils down to how quickly you can make decisions about things. Look around and ask yourself what you really need in your life in order to thrive.” She says many unnecessary items are stored because they evoke memories or because they might be useful someday. “Ask yourself how many artifacts you need to remember a single event? And if you can’t name a specific date and scenario when you’ll make use of something, you really should consider discarding it,” she says. “Try to have these decisions made beforehand so you can make the best use of your time on the big day.” REMOVE, SORT, DISCARD Betsy Goldberg, home director at Real Simple magazine, recommends starting the big day by laying an old sheet or two onto the garage floor or driveway, and then taking everything out of the garage, sorting it into piles by category. “That makes it easier to

BEAUTY WITHIN Benefit to us humans is another story, though. Cut open a burl and instead of straight grain you find waves and swirls of wood, marbled and feathered wood, perhaps some “eyes” staring back at you. Woodworkers lust for burls, espe-

cially for turning on a lathe, where the appearance of the swirling tissue need not be constrained within the straight and sharp-edged geometry of sawn lumber. Burls are also frequently sliced into veneer. The beauty within a burl and the theories for what causes them could prompt you to try to induce them on a tree. Yet no one has been able to reliably do so. So burls are harvested from trees on which they have naturally formed. Because harvesting a burl can leave a large scar, cut burls only from trees that are being or have been cut down for other purposes.

Contact Bob Sullivan

Broker/Owner Cell: 906-361-4212 Office: 225-LAND (5263) LandCoach@aol.com

40 acres located on the pristine shoreline of Nelligan Lake in Baraga County’s Craig Lake State Forest. The acreage is high, rolling terrain, with mixed mature timber of several species. There are many good building sites to choose from with breathtaking settings overlooking Nelligan Lake. The land has a lot of contour and unique features including a long point that protrudes out into the lake. A nice walking path that could be improved into a driveway brings you from the road to the lake. There is a small inlet stream on the West side and a large outlet stream that joins an outlet from Thomas Lake to form the Nelligan Creek. This junction is located within the property boundary and makes for a great canoe and kayak adventure. A full Limnological lake study has been done on Nelligan and the report is available. Nelligan Lake is about 32 acres in size with an average depth of 6 feet and depths up to 11 feet. A large population of largemouth bass can be found along with yellow perch and numerous forage species. $98,000 MLS# 1099620
