A LITTLE LESS DRAMA Reproduction Kitchen backsplashes get sleeker

is key to great cucumbers

If you are going to venture at all beyond the ordinary in growing cucumbers — and you must if want to eat the best tasting ones — then you should think about how they reproduce. Cucumber flowers are either male or female, and fruits develop only from female flowers. The male flowers supply pollen, which is carried by bees to the female flowers, whose ovaries, once the flowers are pollinated, swell. Run-of-the-mill cucumber varieties have separate male and female flowers on the same plant. But each cucumber plant is somewhat flexible about its sexuality, pumping out more female flowers in response to better growing conditions. Fruit and seed production, after all, take a lot of energy. LEE REICH And then there are cucumbers, called gynoecious types, that have been bred to bear only female flowers. After all, why waste any of a plant’s energy producing male flowers? Gynoecious cucumber varieties tend to yield more fruits and bear them earlier in the season (which is good) but over a shorter period of time (which can be good or bad depending on how you use the cucumbers). See Cucumbers p. 2D

By MELISSA RAYWORTH Associated Press The kitchen backsplash — that surface behind the stovetop or sink that protects the wall from damage during cooking and dishwashing — has long been used to add color and beauty to an otherwise utilitarian space. But dramatic, ornately patterned backsplashes, once popular, are being replaced by sleeker, simpler designs, says interior designer Jenny Kirschner. Many designers are using monochromatic tiles arranged in simple patterns to create beautiful backsplashes that won’t quickly go out of style. We’ve asked New York-based Kirschner and two other interior designers — Florida-based Andrew Howard and California-based Sayre Ziskin — for advice on creating a kitchen backsplash that is as timeless as it is gorgeous. QUALITY AND HANDCRAFTING “I make it a point in every kitchen to do a standout backsplash,” Howard says. But that doesn’t mean the project has to be expensive. Because a backsplash covers a relatively small area, he says, it’s possible to use highend and even custom-made tiles while keeping costs down. There is usually a space of just 18 inches between upper and lower cabinets, so it doesn’t take a lot of tile to fill that area if you wish to extend the backsplash beyond the sink or stovetop. All three designers suggest hunting

This undated photo provided by interior designer Jenny Kirschner shows a kitchen designed by Kirschner. Although kitchen backsplashes are often made of porcelain or ceramic tile, Kirschner used stainless steel to give this open, airy kitchen a fresh, modern look. (AP photo) for high-quality porcelain or ceramic tiles, or commissioning them in custom colors and finishes. For ceramic tiles in custom colors, Kirschner recommends Fireclay Tile, a California company that ships nationally. Ziskin is a fan of the handmade tiles by Anne Sacks, which she says offer the beautiful flaws and uniqueness that machine-made tiles don’t have. COORDINATING, NOT CONTRASTING It’s tempting to add a burst of color in your backsplash. But by keeping the backsplash neutral and adding

brighter colors through more easily replaceable things like curtains and upholstery, you’re less likely to get bored. And if you’ll be selling your home within a few years, a neutral backsplash in classic white subway tile or a pale gray glass tile is a much easier sell than a distinctive color. Kirschner likes designing backsplashes that are coordinated with the countertop material. By matching the materials instead of contrasting them, she says, “you don’t run the risk of See Kitchens p. 2D

saying, ‘What was I thinking?’” One way to do this is to use faux-marble porcelain slab countertops in a neutral color, and then use tiles or a solid slab in the same material for your backsplash. You can also choose a tile in a slightly different material than your countertops but exactly match the color. CREATIVE PLACEMENT One way to make tiles in a neutral shade like white or gray look more striking is to get “playful with shape, rather than color,” Kirschner says. If you like subway tiles but feel they’re overused, choose an oversize version or a very elongated one. To make classic tiles look fresh and surprising, try arranging long, narrow tiles vertically instead of horizontally. Another fresh twist: Ziskin likes lining up edges of tiles so that they are stacked neatly, rather than offsetting them in a traditional brick pattern. Also popular right now are hexagonal tiles arranged with the top edge left uneven. It’s traditional to cut a few hexagonal tiles in half to create a solid top line

straight across. But designers are now using only whole tiles, creating a playful, uneven line across the top. SLABS AND STEEL Some homeowners rarely cook, Howard says, so they can choose a backsplash that’s purely about beauty. But the rest of us do give our stoves and sinks a workout, so we need to be more practical. “If you’re in your kitchen a lot and it’s getting heavy use, I would shy away from marble or a grouted backsplash,” Howard says. “Because you don’t want to spend all your time scrubbing down your backsplash.” Ziskin agrees: Lots of thick grout lines can be “a cleaning nightmare.” One solution is using a faux-marble slab backsplash (real marble may pick up stains you can’t remove) rather than tiles. That way there’s no grout to clean. Another option is using tiles but keeping grout to a minimum. Kirschner has used stainless steel tiles with no visible grout lines to create a sleek backsplash in kitchens that also have stainless steel appliances. It’s a unique look and easy to clean. Any design that you love can be beautiful, Ziskin says, “as long as the surface is wipeable and it doesn’t stain.”

“Whoa,” you might say, “no way those female flowers can swell into fruits without male flowers to provide pollen.” Good point. That’s why seed packets for gynoecious cucumbers contain a few seeds of standard cucumbers to provide enough male flowers — it doesn’t take many — to provide pollen for all those female flowers. Those standard cucumber seeds are dyed for identification. Another way to get pollen to a gynoecious cucumber is to borrow it from your neighbors. No need to walk next door, though: Bees will carry it over from as far as a half-mile or more away. Lastly, you might get a gynoecious cucumber to bear fruit by growing a variety whose fruits develop without any pollination whatsoever — a parthenocarpic variety. Like parthenocarpic grapes, persimmons and figs, parthenocarpic cucumbers have no seeds. Parthenocarpic cucumbers look and taste better when not pollinated. Stray pollen on one of their female flowers causes part of the fruit to swell, as if pregnant. Parthenocarpic varieties, such as Sweet Success and Telegraph, are therefore ideal for

growing in greenhouses. Let’s now move beyond sex and discuss how to find seeds for this summer’s cukes. Most of the cucumbers that you see on grocers’ shelves are so-called American slicers. This year, you might want to grow pickling varieties which, although billed for making pickles, have excellent flavor. For something extraordinary, try Lemon cucumbers, which are round and light yellow. They might look like lemons, but their flavor and texture are pure cucumber. Other parts of the world offer cucumbers that are, to some palettes, more flavorful than American slicers. From across the Pacific comes Suyo Long, with thinskinned, soft-spined fruits that are long and curved, crisp in texture and sweet in flavor. From Israel come Mideastern, or beit alpha, varieties, such as Amira, with smooth, tender skins and mild flavor. These varieties are gynoecious and parthenocarpic. For something extraordinary and foreign, try the Armenian cucumber, also know descriptively as Yard Long cucumber. These fruits have smooth, pale skins and few seeds. Unlike other cucumbers, which lose quality if you let them stay on the vine too long, Armenian cucumbers actually get better and sweeter. Why? Because Armenian cucumbers are, in fact, melons.

House to Home In this April 27 photo, a "For Sale" sign is posted in front of a home in Charlotte, N.C. On May 24, the National Association of Realtors reports on sales of existing homes in April. (AP photo)

Home sales fell in April amid supply squeeze By JOSH BOAK AP Economics Writer WASHINGTON — Americans pulled back their pace of home-buying in April, as the shrinking number of houses for sale and rising prices are putting them in a bind as their options dwindle. The National Association of Realtors said Wednesday that sales of existing homes declined 2.3 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.57 million. Still, a stable job market has supported solid demand from buyers as home purchases are 1.6 percent higher than a year ago. But the specter of fewer homes for sale is starting to squeeze the market. Would-be buyers are mobbing open houses as sales are occurring on the shortest timeline ever recorded by the Realtors. The inventory of homes for sale has declined on an annual basis for the past 23 months, creating a shortage that has pushed up prices above income growth.

“The demand side of the housing market is just fine, but the supply side is where the issues are,” said Richard Moody, chief economist at Alabamabased Regions Financial. The number of properties listed for sale has plunged 9 percent over the past 12 months to 1.93 million. Homes are staying on the market for a median of just 29 days, the shortest period since the Realtors began tracking this metric in 2011. The fastmoving market has fueled rising home values that have priced some entry-level buyers out of the market. The median sales price has risen 6 percent from a year ago to $244,800. But the sales volume of homes worth less than $250,000 has declined over the past year, while homes worth more than the median have experienced sales growth. Sales declined last month in the Northeast, South and West, while rising in the Midwest. As a result of the rising prices, it’s

still cheaper to buy rather than rent, but the gap is narrowing. The real estate firm Trulia released an analysis Wednesday finding that buying was more affordable in the 100 largest metro areas, provided the owner provided a 20 percent down payment and stays at least seven years. But rental prices were flat or falling in 93 of the metro areas, while home prices kept rising — such that it might soon be cheaper to rent than buy in high-priced markets such as Honolulu and the California Bay Area cities of San Francisco, San Jose and Oakland. Relatively low mortgage rates still favor buying in many markets. Mortgage buyer Freddie Mac said the average rate on 30-year fixed-rate home loans edged down to 4.02 percent last week from 4.05 percent the prior week. The rate was 3.58 percent a year ago and averaged 3.65 percent in 2016, the lowest level in records dating to 1971.

US productivity flat in first quarter, while labor costs up By MARTIN CRUTSINGER AP Economics Writer WASHINGTON (AP) — The productivity of American workers was flat in the first three months of this year, while labor costs rose at the fastest pace since the second quarter of last year. Productivity growth was zero in the January-March quarter after rising at a 1.8 percent annual rate in the fourth quarter, the Labor Department reported Monday. It was the weakest performance since productivity had fallen at a 0.1 percent rate in the second quarter of last year but an improvement from an initial reading of a 0.6 percent decline. Productivity, the amount of output per hour of work, has been weak through most of the current recovery. Many analysts believe finding a way to boost productivity growth is the biggest economic challenge facing the country, but there is no consensus on the cause of the slowdown. Labor costs rose at a 2.2 percent rate after having fallen at a 4.6 percent rate in the fourth quarter. It was the fastest gain since AprilJune of last year. The revision in first quarter productivity had been expected because of the revision to first quarter gross domestic product, the economy’s total output of goods and services. The government initially reported that GDP had risen by a tepid 0.7 percent rate in the January-March pe-

rio. But that was revised to show a slightly better reading of a 1.2 percent gain. The boost in output led to the better reading for productivity. Since 2007, productivity increases have averaged just 1.2 percent. That’s less than half the 2.6 percent average annual gains turned in from 2000 to 2007, when the country was benefiting from increased efficiency from greater integration of computers and the internet into the workplace. Rising productivity means increased output for each hour of work, which allows employers to boost wages without triggering higher inflation. The effort to boost productivity back to the levels since before the Great Recession will likely be a key factor in determining whether President Donald Trump will achieve his goal of boosting overall growth from the weak 2.1 percent average seen since the recession. The economy’s potential for growth is a combination of increases in the labor force and growth in productivity. During the campaign, Trump pledged to double growth to 4 percent or better. Trump last month released a budget that projects faster economic grwoth will produce $2 trillion in deficit reduction over the next decade but that forecasts expects growth to rise over the next few years to a sustained pace of 3 percent annual gains.
