t a time of year when weeds may be getting the better of you, what sweet revenge it is to turn them into an asset. Eat them! And one of the best weeds for this purpose is stinging nettle. Yes, that “stinging” in the name is off-putting, and rightly so. Grab a clump of stinging nettle leaves and stems in your bare hands and you’ll feel like you’ve been stung by a horde of angry ants or bees. That’s because the plant is covered with short, hollow hairs that are poised like miniature hypodermic needles. Their swollen bases are filled with formic acid, the same LEE REICH stuff that causes the pain of ant and bee stings. Even accidentally brushing against the plant is enough to inflict stings, and the pain could last a whole day. Stinging nettle does not seem like the kind of plant anyone would want to harvest, let alone put into their mouth. But putting on gloves takes care of the harvesting problem. And cooking or drying the plant removes the sting for eating. There are good reasons to go to the trouble of eating stinging nettles, beyond wanting to remove it from your garden. Stinging nettle is a healthful weed, or, shall we now say, healthful “vegetable.” It’s high in vitamins A and C, and in the minerals calcium and iron. Stinging nettle also has a number of medicinal properties, including some anti-bacterial and anti-cancer properties. Poultices of nettle tea are said to soothe aching joints, and nettle has been used to treat urinary problems and offer some relief from hay fever. Probably the most famous medicinal use of stinging nettle is for treating arthritis. The stinging seems to stimulate blood flow to afflicted areas when locally applied. (Interestingly, bee stings have also been used to treat arthritis.) I’m not suggesting choking down stinging nettle as famine food or as medicine; the stuff also tastes good. I’ve enjoyed it as a tea and as cooked greens, the latter in the same way as spinach. If you aspire to loftier culinary heights, borrow some dishes from around the world: nettle beer from Britain or, from Ireland, nettle cream soup, which also calls for leeks, milk, butter and, of course, oatmeal. The best season to harvest nettles is now, in spring, when the shoots and leaves are young and tender. If you don’t know the plant, you probably don’t want to discover it by accidentally brushing up against it. So here’s what to look for: a stem 4 to 6 feet high with pointed, somewhat heart-shaped, toothed leaves directly opposite each other at each node along the stem. The leaves are smooth on their upper sides, their stinging hairs on the undersides. The flowers and the seeds that follow are both small, and appear in branched clusters that emerge where leaves join the stem. Don’t flog yourself too much for letting this weed find its way into your garden. You’re a good gardener. Stinging nettle is a weed of damp, rich soils. Now, if only I could find some use for creeping Charlie and quackgrass, two other weeds of damp, nutrient rich soils.

By KIM COOK Associated Press If you’ve got a powder room, chances are there’s a pedestal sink in it. The lavatory perches have long been the go-to option for small bathrooms, and even for full-size spaces where a less imposing fixture is desired. The simple bowl-on-a-stick concept has been given some imaginative rethinking in recent bath collections, and some are downright statement pieces. Designers are experimenting with materials like stone, metal and wood, and coming up with interesting textural compositions. Some pedestal sinks resemble works of art, with elaborate painted motifs, or sculptural silhouettes. Kallista’s Papion pedestal sink has a bow-tie silhouette; in black with a white sink, it’s got a men’s dress-wear look, and in solid white, its spare modernity is no less elegant. Barbara Barry’s transitionalstyle Tuxedo sink for Kallista features an ample sink surround for soaps and hand towels. (www.kallista.com ) Those looking for a more traditional style might appreciate Kohler’s Prairie Flowers or English Trellis pedestal sinks. Both have a painted floral pattern that would look pretty in a garden-themed powder room or girls’ bathroom. (www.kohler.com ) The totem shape is emerging as a trend. In some, the sink and base become one, so the fixture resembles a ceramic bongo drum; Hastings Tile & Bath has an attractive one that comes in a range of finishes, including metallics and patterns. Also at Hastings, a striking Tulip pedestal, available in Ferrari red, or gold or silver leaf. (www.hastingstilebath.com ) In Stone Forest’s organic contemporary collection, columns of basalt are honed or left natural, and vessels are mounted atop. The fixtures can be had as one, two or three columns, so the sink can rest on one while the others are landing zones for towels and toiletries. (www.stoneforest.com ) Luxury bath company Maison Valentina used the effect of a rock slab cracking after being frozen to create the Lapiaz pedestal sink. A column of mirrored aluminum is run through with a sliver of burnished gold lacquer, and a freeform, gold-toned aluminum sink rests on top. The studio’s Newton pedestal sink is crafted of hand-cast brass spheres that are forged and stacked, then given a coat of inky black lacquer; a gold sink nestles inside the structure like a celestial bird bath. (www.maisonvalentina.net ) Inbani’s Tambo integrates the washbasin into a wall-mounted column, and then there’s a portable, recessed storage base with one or two shelves that can be had in a range of colors, creating a sleek, minimalist fixture. (www.inbani.com ) Customize your bath by selecting slim or curvy glass, nickel or brass legs, and then adding an interesting sink; Waterworks and Urban Archaeology have options. (www.waterworks.com ; www.urbanarchaeology.com ) See Sinks p. 2D

Above, this photo provided by Falper shows their Wing sink, designed by Ludovico Lombari, which evokes the swooping wings of a crane, in a wall-mounted sink. Pedestals and wallmounts like this are great choices for small baths, and become sculptural art pieces that elevate the spaces. Below, this photo provided by Kohler shows one of their Prairie Flowers and English Trellis pedestal sinks, which bring the garden indoors, to a powder room or small bath. At bottom, this photo provided by Stone Forest shows their Triple Basalt pedestal sink. Basalt pillars make for a unique pedestal sink base. These basalt columns from Stone Forest have both polished facets and the natural surface, creating a unique organic contemporary fixture that can be topped with a vessel basin. Configurations can be one, two or three pillars, joined by brass or nickel finished tubing. (AP photos)

Small and cute: why crafters are in love with ‘little thingies’

By JENNIFER FORKER Associated Press When my daughter Grace was little, she collected tiny objects, sometimes pilfered from her sister and squirreled away in her bedroom. Among the 4-year-old’s prized collection of teenytiny items were a Barbie suitcase, Hello Kitty erasers, a 1-inch plastic baby and animal figurines. “It’s special to me,” she explained when an item of her sister’s was found in her room. Everything tiny was special to this child, and the family came to refer to little objects as she did, as “little thingies.” We still do, even though Grace is 18 and graduating from high school. Little thingies have caught on in the crafting world, so much so that stacks of books are dedicated to their creation. Most are crochet projects, but other mediums, such as needle felting and knitting, also bend toward the tiny. The Japanese gave little thingies a name: amigurumi — small, adorable creatures that are usually crocheted. I’ve seen Hello Kitty and Star Wars characters, comic book superheroes and every animal under the sun in books touting amigurumi patterns. What is the draw? Why spend hours hunched over a small, non-essential project? You can’t wear it like a scarf or a hat. You can’t decorate with it, as you would a pillow or a blanket. Albeit adorable, the inanimate object is a dust collector. Crocheter Twinkie Chan of Ventura, California, attributes the attraction to this: babies. “We’re naturally drawn to little, tiny things like a baby,” human or animal, she says. “Stick some big eyes on (a project) and people will love it.” There are practical reasons, too. “I don’t have the patience to make anything big,” says Cindy Wang, author of “Literary Yarns: Crochet Projects Inspired by Classic Books” (Quirk Books, 2017). “I like being able to make something you can hold in your hand.” Wang, who created patterns for Julius Caesar, Hamlet, Frankenstein and many more characters for “Literary Yarns,” began crocheting tiny figurines six years ago — mostly superheroes. Storage can be an issue with these vanity-less sinks, but Seattle-based professional organizer Annie Traurig has some suggestions. Etageres, slanted ladders and even dressers can do the job of stowing toiletries and other supplies, while adding personality. No room on the floor? A little vertical space may be all you need; just get creative. “Start by installing small floating wall shelves,” says Traurig. “I’m telling you, you’ll marvel at the wonders of a small

slab of wood screwed onto your wall.” Ronbow’s Pebble sink, designed by French designer Ora Ito, doesn’t have a base but mounts to the wall, along with matching mirrors — all crafted in a freeform, organic pebble shape with a woodlike finish and an integrated, solid-surface white sink. (www.ronbow.com ) Finally, for the truly adventurous bathroom, there’s Falper’s Wing sink, designed by Federico Lombardi. It’s another with no base, but it doesn’t need one. Two swoops of ceramic on both sides of the sink resemble a crane’s expansive wings, and the result is a dramatic work of functional wall art. (www.falper.it )

its complexity, a project can take two to nine hours. Wang likes to share her simpler creations, and makes a game of it, regularly leaving the figurines at San Diego Comic-Con and in her home city of Houston. She recently dropped off Marvel characters such as Spiderman and Iron Man in New York City, tweeting clues to their

whereabouts. She says that only basic crochet skills are required to make the simplest dolls, although learning how to shape them and adding embellishments takes more time. “The crocheting part itself is the easy and quick part for me,” Wang says. “It’s the tiny details that take time.”
