Dawson Creek Secondary School Graduates of 2021

As I reflect on the past year, I am reminded of all the challenges and obstacles that we faced to reach this point. You are the first graduating class in approximately 100 years to complete their entire senior year in a pandemic. With all the hurdles you have navigated in this past year, achieving a high school graduation is an amazing accomplishment. Graduation is one of those events you will remember for the rest of your lives, and I think it’s safe to say you will never forget this experience. You have all taken different paths to reach this point and that adds to the uniqueness of this celebration. Congratulations! For perhaps the last time in your high school career, I’m going to attempt to inspire some deep thinking, and personal reflection. I’ll start with the following question from Simon Sinek: What is your why? Or put another way, Why do you do what you do? It’s a very simple question from the outside but, if you really dig into it and take some time to reflect, your answer will be complex. Defining your why will help to define you. It will drive your moral compass and will challenge you throughout your life. It will provide you with a measuring stick and will guide your decision-making process. Your why will also change multiple times throughout your life as you gain knowledge, experience new things, and transition further into adulthood. Knowing why you are doing something or knowing what drives you will help you get the most out of each experience, and it will ensure you are engaging fully in what is in front of you, and not on what you may perceive to be missing. Put another way, your why is what differentiates you from other people, it’s what inspires you, and it forces you to take action. Many of you have a why; some of you may not. That is okay. Discovering and redefining our why makes us who we are. My challenge to you is to not be afraid to redefine your why and enjoy the adventure of personal discovery. The second piece of thinking is around the following question: If this were the last day of my life, would my plans for today still be the same? I recently read something that said it’s weird to think that the best day of your life hasn’t happened yet. That’s a very interesting statement in the sense that, if you’re always living in the now, you may be blind to the amazing things that are happening around you or to you. It’s important to take a step back from time to time and be thankful for all that you have. Further to that, it’s important that you take advantage of each day you have and to make sure you’re not missing out on opportunities because of the risk. I’m not talking about risk-taking in terms of danger but rather risk-taking in terms of opportunity. Former American President Thomas Jefferson said with great risk comes great reward. Make sure you are aware of opportunities around you, you are reflective and calculated in your decisions, and that you don’t miss out on something because your plans for today are already set. The final thing I would like you to think about is as follows: Create an idea book. On the surface this may seem like a silly idea but hear me out. The notion of an idea book came my way when I was completing my Masters. When I first heard of the idea of an idea book, I thought to myself, this is a silly idea … so I wrote that down. In fact, that was the first entry in my idea book. Whether it’s notes on your phone or an actual physical entry into a diary, an idea book is a great way to help organize your thoughts and to take advantage of opportunities that come your way. Ideas come to us in many forms but, if we don’t take a few minutes to write them down and reflect on them, we may miss out on something great right in front of us. The idea book also helps you to reflect on things that are happening to you and around you. Reflection is a great skill that, if used and developed, will be an asset for you. Don’t assume you know everything and be willing to approach things with an open mind. Those two things will allow you to experience everything life has to offer and will make for some interesting entries in your idea book. Graduates, as you leave Dawson Creek Secondary School and move onto the next phase of your life, don’t forget about your why, live your life to the fullest by seizing opportunities, and take a few minutes to capitalize on a new idea. I thank you all for your contributions to Dawson Creek Secondary School. I know my life is fuller from having the opportunity to work and learn with you, and I wish you all the best in your future endeavours. Take care,

Josh Kurjata Principal

30 The Dawson Creek Mirror, JULY 1, 2021

Chetwynd Secondary School Good afternoon to the Graduating class of 2021, This certainly has been an interesting year. A year of challenges, a year of frustration, but also, for this amazing group of graduates, a year of possibility. We are currently on the cusp of a time of transition. Both for the world, and for this class. As things begin to open up, so do the doors of opportunity for all of you. You had to spend countless hours in your classrooms, learning skills, being tested, making friends and preparing yourself for the great journey into adulthood. And now here you are. . . The students that I see before me today, will be become the leaders of the world tomorrow. It does not matter what role you play in society, you will be contributing and you will be adding value. You will become our nurses, our teachers, our mechanics, our business owners, the possibilities are endless. You will have the chance to write your own story and be the main character. You have a chance to be a change in the world, and make it a better place for those that come after you. What is exciting about graduation is that now you have to construct your own identity. You’ve spent your young life being told how to dress, how to speak, how to act, and how to be. Now, you can decide that for yourself. Now you can be the person that you truly are. Will you make mistakes along the way? Most definitely, that’s a big secret you are going to learn. Being an adult isn’t just a magical ticket to understanding the world. We will always be learning and always be lifting ourselves up from the mistakes that we make. It’s how we become stronger and how we become more resilient. We may not have known each other a long time, but I am very proud to be your principal during this important milestone in your life. There has been a lot of focus on what we can’t do or have this year, but I hope we can emphasize the important things that we do have. You are surrounded by friends, your family is close by, and today you will celebrate your achievement. Take time today to think about the little moments that you’ve collected over the years, your tapestry of memory is a rich mosaic of laughter, connection and challenge. Though these memories may begin to fade in the following decades, they served to help make you who you are, and who you are going to be. I think one of the most important things you learn in school is to think critically, to not accept information you hear without first considering the source and intent of the author. The world you are entering is different from the one that I faced when I was graduating high school. Don’t fall victim to the false realities and highlight reels posted on social media. Define for yourself what success is, and find the things that make YOU happy, not what you think other people want. Finally, take some time this summer to reflect. Think about the lessons that you have learned and the goals you have made for yourself. You are in charge now; you have a lot of responsibility on your shoulders. Carry that weight and lift your head high. Congratulations to the graduating class of 2021. Go out in the world, I know you will make us proud.
