The children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads; And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just settled down for a long winter’s nap,
Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash. The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below, When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer, With a little old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick. More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;.
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.

In early-September, the South Peace SPCA branch received a surrendered animal who stood out among the rest. When Moro, a white, year-old Husky was dropped off, executive director Wendy Davies said she was one of the most fearful dogs she’s seen. “She was so fearful we couldn’t get a collar on her for a week, she would cower and hide away from us and was very, very afraid of people,” Davies said. This tale has a very happy ending, as Moro was adopted by Brandy Cantrill on November 27, with the adoption officially set to go through on December 18, just in time for Christmas. However, it took a long time to get here. Davies and the staff at the SPCA worked extensively with Moro over that time to earn her trust with humans. The staff used behavior modification techniques, and classical and operant conditioning to associate humans with not being scary, Davies said. “I just had her follow me for the first week and we started to build trust. She didn’t ever try to bite us, and she slowly became more comfortable,” said Davies. Cantrill first saw Moro when she stopped by the SPCA earlier in the fall to see what animals were up for adoption. One of her two Huskies had just died, and she was looking for another animal to add to the family. She saw Moro being walked, and inquired about adopting her, but was told Moro wasn’t up for adoption yet. “She was pretty skittish, I wasn’t able to pet her, and
was told she wasn’t available,” Cantrill said. It took three months before Davies and staff made Moro available for adoption. Davies said that’s a very long time for one animal to stay at the shelter, and that the typical length of a stay is two to three weeks. “She eventually got to the point where our staff could walk her, she got along well with everybody, and it was an amazing process to watch,” said Davies. When Cantrill went back to the SPCA on November 26, she was told Moro was still there and now available for adoption. Cantrill went back the next day, spent some time with Moro, and decided to take her home that weekend as a foster. The rest is history, as they say. Moro has fit in perfectly with Cantrill, her boyfriend Steven Code, and dog sister Molly, a fellow Husky. “You can definitely see the difference. Her tail is wagging constantly, she is sweet and warms up to you, and gets along perfectly with Molly,” Cantrill said. Davies said while the number of adoptions from the Peace Region have been steady, she’s seen a huge increase in adoption interest from people across the country. She said they have moved more than 250 animals this year to other regions, where they get adopted quickly. “She puts a smile on everyone’s face,” Cantrill said. “It’s good to adopt dogs and I encourage people to try it.” sports@ahnfsj.ca

Pouce Coupe Esso has dropped $440 thus far on the Pouce Coupe Food Bank. Esso owner Lee-Anne Klein said she came up with the idea to offer two and five dollar donation bags, as a collection box for the food bank is already located at the store. “I got thinking how can we make more money for them,” she says. “I just made some bags and thought I’d sell them, and donate the money and the food.” Klein says the bags have been well received by the community, with $200 worth in donations collected already. “I went out and bought some food, and it sold within a day, so they’re selling like crazy,” says Klein. The bags will continue to be on offer this month, and contain non-perishable food such as canned goods and noodle soup. Anyone looking to help out can stop by the Esso to purchase a bag or drop off their own items to donate.

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky, So up to the house-top the coursers they flew, With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too. And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of each little hoof. As I drew in my hand, and was turning around, Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound. He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot; A bundle of toys he had flung on his back, And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack. His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath; He had a broad face and a little round belly, That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly. He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself; A wink of his eye and a twist of his head, Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread; He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk, And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose; He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight, HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD-NIGHT!

Bear Mountain opened Monday, restrictions must be followed
Thanks to countless hours spent by volunteers making snow, and the recent heavy snowfall, Bear Mountain Ski Hill will open for the season Monday, December 21, from 12 to 6 p.m. The warm start to the winter delayed the opening of the ski hill, but with the recent turn in temperatures, it looks like people will be able to get their ski fix in before Christmas as the Bear Mountain executive hoped. “We will be open this year. We’ll close Christmas Day and New Years Day, but otherwise we’ll be open as long as people comply with the health orders,” said Paul Gevatkoff.
One of the biggest rules that must be followed at Bear Mountain this year is everyone must wear a face mask unless they are skiing down the hill. This includes if they are waiting in line for the chairlift, going up the lift, or inside the chalet. Social distancing markings will be laid out in lift lines and in the chalet and must be followed as well. “If people can’t wear a mask or facial covering, even if it’s for medical reasons, then they can’t come. We don’t want to jeopardize our operation, we want to open, an don’t want to get to the point where we could potentially be shut down,” Gevatkoff said. The concession will be open, but
masks must be worn in line as well. Because of the provincial restrictions around events, social gatherings and certain activities, Gevatkoff expects there to be more people using the skill than usual. “We are expecting more guests than normal, we’ve sold quite a few more seasons passes than normal. It seems like other ski hills have been full every weekend andI don’t think it will be any different here,” Gevatkoff said. He said the hill hasn’t set any limits yet on how many people the hill will accept in a day, but that they will do so if it becomes apparent a limit is needed.
The hill can always use more volunteers, but a lot of people have been helping out so far and have been putting in hours making snow, putting up signs, and putting up safety fences. The forecast for the coming weeks looks to be sunny with weathers hovering between minus 2 and 10 degrees Celsius, looking like hitting Bear Mountain will be a perfect Christmas-break sporting opportunity. For the hill’s detailed COVID-19 Safety Plan, go to bearmtnskihill. com. sports@ahnfsj.ca

Unique tree goes viral, brightens hearts Dillon Giancola Sports Reporter/Photographer
Ramona Tanner of Dawson Creek had the neat idea to make a Christmas tree combining her Indigenous culture with her love of neon colours. Little did she know a post of her unique creation on Facebook would be so popular. The picture of her tree, originally posted on December 5, now has more than 45,000 shares
and 2,500 likes. “I’m very honoured my tree got such great reception and has brought awareness to my Indigenous culture, and my hometown Dawson Creek,” Tanner said. Tanner and her mom made the feathers for the tree, with all the colours of the rainbow, and decorated them on a white Christmas tree. She wanted to incorporate her Indigenous culture, so she decided to put a dream catcher on the top in place of the tra-

ditional star. The rainbow colour tree skirt she purchased online, as many people have been asking her where she got the various decorations. “In my culture, dreamcatchers are meant to catch the bad dreams and let the good ones through. I wanted to catch the negative holiday vibes and let the positivity through,” Tanner said. Tanner was inspired by the tree her friend Leslie Much, who also lives in Dawson Creek, made. “Hers is very beautiful, she made all the items on her tree, she let me ‘borrow’ her idea,” said Tanner. “I do a lot of beading, and while I was beading this summer I thought I’d love to have a Christmas tree that was Indigenous in-
spired,” Munch said. She made all the items on her tree except for the feathers, and began making the decorations in September. Tanner said it’s inspiring people around the world to decorate theirs in a similar fashion. “The only thing I would ask is for people to respect my culture and acknowledge it if they choose to decorate theirs like mine,” she said. Below - Leslie Munch’s Indigenous-inspired Christmas tree, which inspired her friend Ramona Tanner to make one of similar style. Everything on the tree is homemade but the feathers. Munch began making the decorations in September.

Best wishes our entire t
We can’t say thank you enough! We, at St. Marks’s Food Bank would like to thank the community of Dawson Creek and area for their wonderful generosity in these difficult times of the Covid 19 pandemic. So many of you have stepped up to make sure those who are vulnerable are able to put food on the table. Even during the shut downs we have been able to serve all who come through our doors. There are too many individuals, corporations, service clubs, schools, local businesses, churches and others to thank that it would fill several columns!! This community is amazing! Food drives and fund raising for our foodbank have been exceeded compared to other years for which we are very thankful. We now know we can keep on offering our services to the less fortunate in our community for the foreseeable future without fear of running out of supplies. Our Bag Lunch program is able to carry on while the Soup Kitchen is closed, thanks to a few dedicated ladies, who saw a need for some nutritious meal requirements. We would like to wish all of you a wonderful Christmas and New Year. Again, thank you and stay safe until you get the vaccine shot for this covid 19 virus. Our Volunteers: Charlotte, Mylene, Brenda, Dawn, Mike, Bill, David, Anne, Sheila, Judy, Jacquie, Melissa, Rupert and others who help on a casual basis.
A heartfelt thank you from the staff and management at Deep Physio for another wonderful year and your continuing support. Have a safe and merry Christmas and a happy new year!

There is no doubt that this year has been a year like no other, but here in Northeastern BC we look out for one another and take care of each other during difficult times. I know this Christmas will be no differ-
ent. I want to thank our incredible frontline healthcare workers who are working tirelessly every day to protect our region and help keep us safe and healthy. I also want to thank our caregivers who continue to care for our most vulnerable seniors. As we all prepare of the holidays, I once again encourage everyone who is able to continue to shop local. These small businesses are the backbone of our communities and they need our support. As I recently said in the House of Commons, perhaps now more than ever we all need to be reminded of the joy of the very first Christmas, so I’d like to finish with these timeless words: “Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. And behold, an angel of the Lord
stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. Then the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.’ And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: ‘Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!’” Luke 2:8-14 (NKJV) From my family and staff to all of you, may we remember the true joy and everlasting meaning of the season. Merry Christmas! Bob Zimmer Member of Parliament Prince George-Peace RiverNorthern Rockies

Tremblay School celebrates! Tremblay Elementary School, despite the current restrictions, was able to continue a long standing festive holiday tradition of providing a Turkey Lunch for students prior to the winter holiday. On Tuesday, December 15th, lunch was prepared and students received a full turkey or ham dinner with all the fixings. Usually this event brings the entire school together in the gymnasium, with rows of tables set up, and volunteers helping to prep and serve the food. “A huge thank you this year to the Alliance Church who were able to cook the turkeys and hams. This year a small number of school staff also helped prep the meal,” said SD59 Asst. Supt Mike Readman. The food was then it was served in individual classrooms, adhering to the guidelines for food service and learning cohorts. sports@ahnfsj.ca

People near and far eagerly await December 31 so they can welcome the arrival of a new year. The final day of the year is a key dates on social calendars, and most individuals gather with friends or family members to count down to midnight. Foods and beverages are important components of New Year’s Eve gatherings, no matter how many guests are in attendance. Finger foods and easy-to-share appetizers are ideal snacks to pair with cocktails or glasses of bubbly. This recipe for “Chicken Meatballs With Chipotle-Honey Sauce” from “Crock•Pot 365 YearRound Recipes” (Publications International, Ltd.) from the Crock•Pot Kitchens can make for an ideal hors d’oeuvres for New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Hunger Has No Season Dear Annie: Your responders are showing the wonderful ways they are illustrating generosity and care this season, even at the expense of their own enjoyment of the holidays. A suggestion for making those benefits available past Jan. 1 would be to adopt a school or family or shelter, and to continue that commitment. Hunger has no season. Compassion has no limits. ourselves. It is a beautiful circle of joy. Thank you. Dear Annie: I read the article about grown children living at home and disrespecting their parents. I, too, had to apply the “tough love” strategy to one of my children. In a nutshell, my oldest son left for college at 18, finished his freshman year, found a girlfriend and, at 19, decided to switch colleges. He moved into an apartment with a couple of high school friends and began his sophomore year at the university. I soon began to notice that whenever I called the apartment, he was never there. His friends would tell him to call home, which he would. I soon caught on that he was no longer living at the apartment I was paying for. He had moved in with his girlfriend, dropped classes so he could work to pay rent and run up every credit card he applied for. We finally had a family discussion about all this, and it was decided he would move home, get a full-time job and start paying off his debts. His girlfriend did the same. The problem was, once he returned home, he didn’t find a job. He worked part time once in a while and kept hours well beyond our curfew. He was given an ultimatum: three strikes and you’re out. After the third time he came home at 3:00 a.m. after partying, I knew what I had to do. I packed up all of his belongings, put them out on the driveway and told him he could no longer live under our roof. I also told him I loved him so very much and that was THE HARDEST decision I ever had to make. I cried all night the first night and hardly slept for a week. He bounced around from friend to friend for about a month. Then, he got a job; he got an apartment; and he started turning his life around. Two years later, he told me that he never blamed me for kicking him out and said that it was probably the best thing I had ever done for him. We have a great relationship. He is nearly 40 now, married with kids, and he has a solid career. I should note that our other children took notice and did not follow in his footsteps. — Tough-Love Mom Dear Tough-Love Mom: Congratulations on doing one of the hardest and kindest things you could do for your son. You are correct that if you enable bad behavior, there really is little incentive to change. What you did for your son changed the trajectory of his life forever. Your tough love paid off. Kudos. “Ask Me Anything: A Year of Advice From Dear Annie” is out now!
