Dr. Remi Oyedeji Dawson Creek’s 2020 Citizen of the Year Dillon Giancola Reporter/Photographer
A frontline worker has been named Mile Zero’s citizen of the year. The pandemic has seen a groundswell of praise directed to doctors, nurses and public health workers, both in Dawson Creek and across the country. It’s only fitting that the City of Dawson Creek’s Citizen of the Year award would go to a medical professional — Dr. Aderemi (Remi)
Oyedeji of the Dawson Creek Medical Clinic. It’s not an honour Oyedeji ever imagined receiving, or even being nominated for, but it’s one he’s extremely grateful for. “I’m very grateful for this vote of confidence from the people in the community. I’m grateful I get to work in this community, and for the patients, doctors, fellow Nigerians, and people who believe in me,” Oyedeji said. The anonymous person who nominated Oyedeji for the award spoke of his leadership through this tough year, and the kindness and consideration he shows to his patients and others. “This era of COVID-19 has brought to the fore, the importance of all our health care workers to this Community. These people go out of their way, risking their lives to make sure that we are healthy. I particularly appreciate the work of Dr. Remi Oyedeji both in the Clinic and in the Dawson Creek Hospital. Very professional service, good bedside manners, good listening skills and not rushing patients out
of his office. He also gives you a call to notify you of medical results, and follow up on you at his own time. Thank you Dr. Remi,” read the nomination. Dr. Oyedeji said while it’s been a tough year for a lot of people, he’s been impressed by the way the community has come together to deal with the circumstances. “We pulled through. Even though it’s ongoing and there is lots of individual stress, it turned out better than it could have.” Oyedeji was thankful to other Nigerians in the community who welcomed him to Dawson Creek in 2016 and have been a big part of him getting to where he is today. “They have been an amazing support for me. Dr. Tare Aganaba and his family really helped teach me about the community, and helped me and my family find a place to stay,” said Oyedeji. “(Dr. Aganaba) was like a father figure, he told me about the people here and what you need to do in a small community. sports@ahnfsj.ca

The pandemic has meant uncertainty and instability, challenging times for many. In all that chaos, good food and great people can still be found at Coffee and Kitchen No. 9, a homegrown eatery located in downtown Dawson Creek. Owner Cindy Eggleston says she couldn’t have done without her staff, her daughter Jillian, and her husband and business partner Grant. “They’re all like daughters to me, we’re all looking out for each other,” Eggleston said of her staff. “I couldn’t run this place without them. We’ve put everything we’ve got into it.” The café opened its doors last October, and continues to locally source as much as they can. Eggleston comes from a farming family, and has lived in the Peace Region her whole life. “It’s got to be fresh, farm to table, that’s the way to do it,” said Eggleston. “I’ve even brought in vegetables from my own garden.” Despite COVID-19, the café continues to keep the doors open and customers happy, only closing briefly at the start of the pandemic. “I did as much as I could with deliveries, and staying open a couple days a week, it was a lot of hard work,” said Eggleston. The café has something for everyone, with everything made from scratch. Sandwiches, soups and salads, fresh-baked goods and specialty hot and cold coffee. Eggleston says she’s humbled by the award, and appreciates the continuous community support from residents. “I’m very happy. We won three awards from the Mirror and now the city, it’s almost overwhelming,” Eggleston said. “We have a lot of regulars here, it’s nice.” tsummer@ahnfsj.ca

Hello dear reader, in this series I will be offering some handy tidbits that will help take your painting practice to the next level. Some points may seem obvious, while others might surprise you. That said, there is no one way, or “right way” to paint, and everyone has their own way of doing things which is completely valid. These are just some tricks that have helped me to improve as a painter that I would like to share. The “Dollar Store” Canvas Oh Dollar Store canvas, so convenient and economical, but with everything, you get what you pay for. Generally, you shouldn’t use a cheap canvases for important projects or commissions. Your clients deserve quality work on stretchers that are not warped or flimsy, which is a common issue with inexpensive, pre-made canvases. However, they do have their uses. They can be refurbished to up their quality, or they can be used for smaller studies or experiments. Firstly, if you want to fix up your budget canvas, you should check for any warping in the stretcher bars before moving forward. If the stretcher bars are anything but straight, there is no point in putting the extra work into it. A tight, straight woodgrain is best. You should also keep an eye out for knots in the wood, which is an indication a warped stretcher bar. Additionally you should check to see if your bars are even lengths to make sure your stretcher is square, as in the carpentry term, not square-shaped. You can check to see if your canvas is square by measuring diagonally from corner to corner. If each diagonal is very
close to the same length, then congratulations, your canvas is square! If not, you can adjust it accordingly. Nifty tip: you can take apart the stretcher bars and reassemble them with different lengths from other canvases to make custom shapes! You can ensure that your canvas stays square by stapling the corners and reinforcing it with gussets. Gussets are triangular pieces of inch masonite, or a similar material that can be glued to the corners on the back of the canvas for extra support. You can get away with just gussets for smaller canvases, however canvases two feet by two feet or more in size should have at least one cross brace as well as gussets to prevent bending during the stretching process. You can order stretcher bars, gussets and cross braces online, or you can make your own. You should always restretch a cheap, premade canvas. Most times, the canvas is loosely stretched over the bars causing it to look sunken in, which will distract from your beautiful painting. You can remedy this by pulling the canvas off the back of the stretcher, and restretching it. I suggest using pliers to pull out the staples, because the
canvas can tear easily. You can find a handy, instructional video on how to stretch a canvas on the Opus Art Supplies Youtube page, or you can click here. You can stretch your canvas further by inserting the canvas keys (you know, those odd little pieces of wood that come with the canvas) into the corners of the stretcher. Once you have stretched your canvas you will likely have some creases leftover from its previous position on the stretcher. You can take these out by filling a spray bottle with warm water and spraying the back of the canvas. Once the canvas has dried the creases should be removed. This is a handy thing to remember if you take a painting out of storage and find that it has gotten wrinkled. Or better yet, you can set that piece of canvas aside and save it for studies and experiments, and replace it with a new piece of raw canvas. You can order lengths of raw canvas from Opus Art Supplies, Delta Art and Drafting Supplies, or DeSerres. Cheap canvases tend to have a loose, prominent weave, which will distract from your painting. While canvas ordered in bulk is much higher quality and better value. If you chose to stick with the original canvas,
you can compensate for that loose weave by adding additional layers of gesso. Just because a canvas comes pre-gessoed doesn’t mean it’s gessoed enough! Depending on the look you want, your canvas should have a minimum of three to five layers of gesso, but more is always better. Some professional painters do a minimum of twenty layers of gesso, while the old Masters like Rembrandt were known to do up to 100 layers to get that perfect, mirrorsmooth finish. Mind you, they also had assistants to do that for them. Gessoing and prepping a painting surface is a whole other can of worms that I will have to explore in a separate article. In the meantime, I will once again direct you to the Opus Art Supplies Youtube page here for tips on gessoing. There you have it, after refurbishing your affordable canvas, you have a professional quality result, and managed to save a few bucks in the meantime. Do you have an artistic endeavour you would like to promote? Is there a topic you would like me to discuss? I would love to hear from you! Please email me at programs@ dcartgallery.ca.

Enjoy comfort food on chilly days
During the height of winter, people increasingly retreat indoors and look for something to within the warm confines of home. Plenty of activities can fit the bill, but some provide the rewarding prospect of a freshly made meal or dessert. When seeking recipes for cold days, consider those comfort foods that can be enjoyed warm to chase away the chill. “Croissant Bread Pudding” is an ideal choice. Topped with a rum-flavored sauce, it’s sweet and decadent for all the right reasons. Enjoy this recipe from “The Pampered Chef: Stoneware Inspirations” (The Pampered Chef, Ltd.) by The Pampered Chef Test Kitchens.
Croissant Bread Pudding Yields 12 servings 4 1 6 1⁄2 2 1 1⁄2 3⁄4 1⁄4 1⁄2
large croissants (about 3 ounces each) red baking apple, such as Jonathan eggs cup plus 3 tablespoons sugar, divided cups half and half orange cup pecan halves, chopped cup butterscotch caramel ice cream topping teaspoon rum extract cup golden raisins
1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Lightly spray a deep baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. Slice croissants from top to bottom into 1⁄2-inch slices. Set aside 16 of the largest slices. Cube remaining slices and place in bottom of baker. Arrange reserved slices over cubes in an overlapping circular pattern. Core and slice apple, leaving peel on; cut slices in half. Tuck apple slices between croissant slices. 2. In a bowl, whisk eggs and 1⁄2 cup of the sugar. Pour half and half into a microwave-safe container and microwave on high 2 minutes or until hot. Slowly add half and half to egg mixture; whisk until blended. Carefully pour egg mixture over croissants. If necessary, lightly press croissants down to coat. 3. Meanwhile, combine ice cream topping, rum extract, reserved orange juice, and raisins in a microwave-safe container. Microwave on high 30 to 60 seconds or until hot; pour into serving bowl. Each year, the Dawson Creek and District Hospital Foundation reaches out to our community during the holiday season in an effort to foster a spirit of giving to our local hospital and Rotary Manor. This year we are calling upon you, to open your hearts, to those patients and residents who need a bit of light in their lives during this holiday season by graciously asking you to support the Dawson Creek & District Hospital Foundation and our community through a charitable donation. Together, we the foundation and you, can bring light to this community by enhancing our care facilities. The Dawson Creek & District Hospital and Rotary Manor touch everyone in our region and truly are a hub of health and care within our community. The Dawson Creek & District Hospital Foundation is always working hard to raise funds in order to purchase new crucial care equipment. A charitable donation made through campaigns such as this one is how we, as a community, can enhance the care we receive locally. Without your continued support these enhancements would not be possible. Please find it in your heart to help the Dawson Creek & District Hospital Foundation improve the health care within our local hospital and Rotary Manor and, in turn, our community as a whole. Your gift of a charitable donation impacts the lives of today and tomorrow, whether its $25, $100 or $1000 your contribution will make a difference. Husband Can’t Carry a Tune Dear Annie: My husband can’t sing. I’m not judging him for that, because I can’t sing either. The problem is that he thinks he can. Every morning, as I’m getting ready for work, he’s putting on a little concert in the bathroom. Nights when he’s making dinner, he puts on the radio and sings along as he cooks. His favorites are corny classic rock and ‘80s ballads with high notes that he never manages to hit. It’s irritating, and I find it unattractive. I’ve tried to hint to him to stop, but he doesn’t seem to get it. I go to a different room to avoid it, but I can still hear it. What can I say to stop these unrequested performances? — Not a Fan Dear Not a Fan: Singing not only expresses joy but also reinforces it: It causes our brains to release endorphins (the same feel-good chemicals that are released during exercise) and oxytocin, which has been shown to alleviate stress and anxiety. Your husband’s morning ritual is good for his long-term health. I say let him keep singing. I get it: Many of us are spending way more time in close quarters with our partners than we ever thought we would, and we’re discovering whole new pet peeves. But try to gently steer your attention back to the bigger picture. Life is short. Love is long. And there may come a day when you’d give anything to hear that off-key voice from the next room.
Annie’s Mailbox
Dear Annie: We, like many other families, are not going to get together for the holidays due to the coronavirus and quarantine restrictions. This is the first time in 45 years. What to do? Do I pack up what I can and send the gifts to our daughters? Or do I say we will just postpone our Christmas? It makes us sad. I am sure many families have met this roadblock before, and though I’m grateful to have been fortunate enough to have not, it is still hard! — Caroline M. Dear Caroline: The holidays really make clear the fact that “home” is not so much a place but a feeling, the one we get when we gather with our dearest loved ones. And this year, many of us will be home for Christmas only in our dreams. It’s a heartache. I encourage you to do whatever feels most right to you, whether that’s shipping the gifts now or planning to celebrate post-COVID-19. More important than the presents, though, is sharing some of the day with your loved ones, so schedule a family video call on Christmas Day. It’s no substitute for in-person time, but it’s what we’ve got and it does help. And I’ll put this question out to my readers: How are you planning to celebrate Christmas from a distance this year? I’d love to hear your ideas. Dear Annie: I live in The Villages, Florida, and, at last count, our neighborhood has given more than 80 sleeping mats made out of “plarn” to homeless people in the Ocala National Forest. Before COVID-19, we got together on a weekly basis to make the plarn and knit the mats. Many other groups here decreased potential litter from plastic bags by turning them into something useful. — Elise in The Villages Dear Elise: I’m so glad to hear that making these “plarn” mats seems to be a nationwide trend! I encourage anyone who has the time to check out plarn mat-making tutorials available on YouTube. “Ask Me Anything: A Year of Advice From Dear Annie” is out now! Annie Lane’s debut book — featuring favorite columns on love, friendship, family and etiquette — is available as a paperback and e-book. Visit http://www. creatorspublishing.com for more information.
