It appears that Northern Health would rather Mile Zero residents drive to Alberta or Fort St. John, than refer patients to Peace Regional MRI in Dawson Creek. “We’d like to build partnerships right here,” says Blaine Curry with Peace Regional MRI. Curry says in the last calendar year the business services more than 1,000 patients, but Curry says that is just the tip of the service iceberg. “There are six to eight month waiting lists with Northern Health, versus a week or two here.” Curry says he has reached out to local politicians, but many have not jumped to any kind of defense of the clinic, or outward support. While some say that politicians are acting like the DC hospital project is in hostage over the issue, Curry does agree this may be the political focus. “Local politicians seem concerned with the hospital project.”

The learning that unfolds as a result of an experience such as this is unmeasurable and will extend beyond the Museum to our school and local community.” The students from Dawson Creek will visit the Museum for three days to learn about the importance of diversity and inclusion, truth and reconciliation, and how to take action for human rights in their own lives and communities.

Pouce Coupe Mayor Lorraine Michetti says the issue is 100 per cent political. “Northern Health is aware of it, they refuse to use it because it is private,” she says. If Northern Health seems to expect people to go to FSJ or Alberta – why the silence from South Peace or Mile Zero politicians? “People don’t want to piss off (BC Minister of Health) Adrian Dix,” she says. The PRRD board requested to support the clinic.

Mischief to crosswalk

#heartsofdc brings out business and community unity Community business owners have put their heads together to unite the community – and raise funds for DC and area food banks. Now is not the time to fly solo, say many. “There is strength is numbers,” says Tracy Hunter-Heartt. She says the inspiration for the idea comes from the community itself. “I saw a heart on the door of the Co-op Home and Agro and decided it was a great visual for our community.” Hunter-Heartt sussed out fellow business owners in Dawson, asking or feedback and input. One of the first to return a call was Natasha Cortes with Vintage and Restoration Love. “I simply gifted her a heart and it has snowballed from there.”

On Tuesday June 2, 2020 at approximately 5:30 pm hours, a bronze coloured, Chevrolet four-door pickup truck with a small white coloured decal on passenger side of the rear window, was observed causing damage to the Pride painted crosswalk at 15th Street and 108th Avenue in Dawson Creek, BC.

slices thick bacon, coarsely chopped yellow onion, diced cloves garlic, chopped pounds Hannah sweet potatoes, peeled and diced ounces cauliflower, cut into florets cups chicken bone broth cup cashew milk teaspoons fine sea salt teaspoon smoked paprika teaspoon apple cider vinegar teaspoon freshly squeezed lemon juice Chopped fresh chives, for serving (optional) Dairy-free sour cream (optional)

Line a plate with paper towels. In a stockpot, cook the bacon over medium heat until the fat is rendered and the bacon is crisp, about 8 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, remove the bacon from the pot and set it on the prepared plate to drain. Pour off most of the grease, reserving about 2 tablespoons in the pot. Return the pot to medium-high heat, add the onion and garlic, and sauté for 2 minutes, until fragrant. Add half of the sweet potatoes and all of the cauliflower and cook for 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Add the bone broth, bring it to a gentle boil, and cook for 10 minutes, until the potatoes and cauliflower are tender. Using an immersion blender, or working in batches in a blender, blend the soup until smooth. (If using a blender, remove the cap in the blender top and place a kitchen towel over the top to allow steam from the hot liquid to release while you blend.) Return the purée to the stockpot. Add the remaining sweet potatoes, the cashew milk, salt, paprika, vinegar, and lemon juice. Bring to a boil over mediumhigh heat, then turn the heat to low and simmer for 12 to 15 minutes, stirring frequently, until the sweet potatoes are tender and the cashew milk has thickened the soup. Ladle the soup into bowls and top with the reserved bacon, chives, and dollop of sour cream. Serve immediately. Store leftover soup in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 5 days, or in the freezer for 6 months. Defrost overnight in the refrigerator. Reheat in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring frequently, for 10 minutes. PC211627

DC deals with fake RCMP If you get pulled over in Mile Zero by an Officer Parker - he’s a fake says Dawson Creek RCMP On August 24, Dawson Creek RCMP were notified of an incident in which an unknown male pretended to be a police officer.

In Williams Lake, a group of hunters, First Nation Chiefs, civic representatives and guide outfitters gathered to protest the plan to cull 400 moose cows. “Moose populations are declining all across the province and it is completely irresponsible for the provincial government to issue limited entry hunting tags for moose cows and their calves without consulting anyone,” said long-time activist Dan Simmons, organizer of the Cow Moose Sign Project, in a news release.

Mike Bernier and Dan Davies handily defeated opponents in their respective races, with Bernier picking up 51.53 percent of the vote in a four candidate race, over 31.34 percent for the BC Conservative party hopeful Kathleen Connolly, while Grizz Michaels took 14.30 percent of the South Peace vote, with independent Dorothy Smith picked up remaining votes.

NDP picks up majority It’s an NDP British Columbia. The BC NDP’s path to a majority government could see the party pick up as many as 14 seats in the 2020 provincial election. PRRD declines ask to nominate 1,400 dormant wells for cleanup

Dober takes DC by-election

a second consecutive term as Premier. It is expected that the NDP will pick up at least 8 of the 14 seats still up in the air and it is expected final results will not be confirmed two weeks as more than half a million mail-in ballots and 75,000 absentee ballots are tallied.

The Peace River Regional District is being asked to nominate more than 1,400 wells for priority cleanup as part of a new $100-million reclamation program launched this year.

Darcy Dober is the new councillor for the City of Dawson Creek. Dober picked 559 votes to Mike Sudnik’s 466 to win the Saturday by-election. Dennis

Canadian Natural Resources submitted a 26page list of wells to the PRRD, and said its endorsement could “maximize” provincial spending and create more jobs.

Kesterke picked up 105 votes, while Tyrel Supernault garnered 86. After the win, Dober said he was looking forward to the next challenge.

13 Years of Bad Luck Dear Annie: I’m confused about an issue that involves my husband. We have been separated for 13 years. We try to work things out all the time, but now, suddenly, he said I cheated on him. He also said that all I do is lie to him. He said he doesn’t want to listen to me when I tell him the truth. He listens to everybody else. So, should I keep trying, or should I just get the divorce and move on with my life and find someone new? Please help me. — Confused

Annie’s Mailbox

Dear Confused: The answer is pretty clear. After 13 years of what sounds like a toxic relationship, it is time to either commit to marriage counseling or to get divorced. Staying in limbo, continuing to accuse each other of cheating and fighting all the time is not healthy for anyone. Best of luck to you. Dear Annie: Please tell the parents who were confused or concerned about cellphone use to have their teens watch (with them, if possible) the documentary “The Social Dilemma” on Netflix. It explains the power of cellphone addiction and how it is ruining lives, making teens (and adults) depressed and anxious and contributing to the rise of hate groups. The biggest threat is the undermining of democracy. Everyone should watch it. It is an eye-opener and will surely give teens more to think about when deciding on their own to use less screen time than just “cause mom and dad say so.” — Cellphone Wary Dear Cellphone Wary: This was a great movie — thanks for the recommendation! — though, I think some of the political messages could be considered controversial. Though there’s no dispute that social media and cellphones are incredibly distracting. Cellphones have been called “the new cigarettes” because they can be addictive and harmful. Dear Annie: I have to share a gift. When my nephew got married, his future mother-in-law sat her daughter down and had a talk with her about her future mother-in-law. Her mom told her to be “nice and respectful” to her future mother-in-law. Her mom told her this, because she has a daughter-in-law who does not treat her well. Unfortunately, I feel this story could be familiar for many mothers of sons. It is heartbreaking that so many families experience this. We never know when a loved one could be gone in a heartbeat. So, why are we acting this way? I guess what really needs to be said is this: Talk to each other. Tell each other what you like and don’t like. Engage in a relationship. Life is work; let’s make it productive and pleasant for as many as we can. Thank you for listening; I love your column for what you write, mainly because of your openness to other viewpoints. — Mother-in-Law Dear Mother-in-Law: Your letter highlights a very important rule; namely, the golden one. Treat others the way you would like to be treated. When we live like this, the world shines a little brighter. “Ask Me Anything: A Year of Advice From Dear Annie” is out now!
