Individual branches have always worked to improve health care, education, equality for women, home improvement, safety and nutrition. They furnished rooms in hospitals and care homes and raised money for many different causes. Parents warned of lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in hospital, potentially at DC school Northern Health says students and staff at Tremblay Elementary School may have been in contact with a lab-confirmed case of COVID-19 on February 2. “In this circumstance, the safety plan was followed precisely - and because of this, the risk of additional cases is very low,” says SD 59 officials. “Please be reassured that our schools will continue to implement the strict protocols and procedures we have in place so that children can continue to attend school as safely as possible.” Northern Health has asked that students and staff monitor for symptoms until February 16, 2021 midnight (which is 14 days from the last date of possible contact with the confirmed
case). Northern Health Medical Health Officers have declared a COVID-19 outbreak on the Medical Inpatient Unit at Dawson Creek & District Hospital (DCDH). The news comes following lab-confirmed cases among patients on the unit. At the time of the outbreak declaration, testing has identified nine patients who have tested positive for COVID-19. Monitoring and testing is underway to identify any additional cases. Enhanced outbreak control measures are in place at DCDH. A forest-focused conservation group in northern BC has released both the first provincewide cumulative impacts map and the first visual account of our last remaining old growth forests. “They are the first tools of their kind made by the public for the public,” explains Conservation North’s outreach coordinator Jenn Matthews. “The cumulative impacts of industrial forestry and other forms of land conversion, such as agriculture and road development, have never been displayed for public view before now, despite the fact that the vast majority are occurring on public lands.” This interactive mapping project, dubbed Seeing Red<https:// consnorth.maps.arcgis.com/apps/ webappviewer/index.html?id=d 1620f43f9084a99a4921e5e8b9b98 dd>, shows where there are opportunities to conserve primary forests, as well as where management for restoration and/or production of wood products are a better option. Both maps were created using data from the provincial and federal governments. According to Matthews, the group “wanted to show what has actually happened in those forests that most of us can’t see.”
Primary forests, forests that have never been disturbed by industry and where natural processes dominate, are threatened across the province by both industrial logging and a burgeoning bioenergy industry. Lower productivity forests, once ignored by the timber industry, are now targeted for biofuels (e.g., pellets). All natural forests are very important for wildlife, but many, particularly those impacted by fire or insects, are undervalued by industry and government, who refer to them as ‘waste or ‘inferior<to justify turning them into bioenergy and pulp. “Insects and fire are an important part of the ecology of our last natural forests, and they survive and even thrive in the aftermath of these natural events,” says Jenn Matthews. According to Conservation North director Michelle Connolly, “The mandate to address climate change is easily gamed, and forests have been on the losing side because of spin doctoring by corporate special interests. Bioenergy from natural forests is even being sold by the Chief Forester as a climate solution. The scientific research does not agree; primary forests are in fact carbon assets
whose greatest climate value is realized when they are left standing.” “At this point, it’s anachronistic to be touching primary forests at all, when so much of BC’s forest land has been converted,” explains Sean O’Rourke, referring to the large swaths of red on the Seeing Red map. The map is free and accessible to all, and the group will maintain and update it for as long as they can pay the ESRI fees. editor@dcdn.ca

KHALIQ: If not now, then when? Amna Khaliq Columnist The younger you are, the more failure you expect. And less care you do of what people will think. In fact, the best thing is you are attempting to learn those things that you have not learned or accomplished before. So they should get a ‘toddler status.’ It is not about you. It is not that you are a loser. It is not that you are not trying hard. As Rachel Hollis says that it is not that you are not enough to cross the finish line; it is just you have not figured out how to run this particular race yet. under your control and work hard on that on any stage or season of your life. Stop being emotional but be factual. Someone else’s opinion of how you are doing, the way you are doing or what you are doing is none of your business. They are not part of your journey. You are a master of your game. The most matter is what you think of you. It means no one is going to give to you. You must be willing to work hard for it, whatever it is, or whatever you want. But you can know it can be yours putting it all the effort and going extra miles. It is a catch-22. Work-life balance is a myth. Work and personal life always struggle with each other for a time. Because you need to give your 120 percent full attention to something to be successful, it is not a matter of right or wrong, or black and white. It is how life works. It is a lifelong
process. The scale is never in balance. The pendulum continuously moves back and forth. The most crucial part is that you must be on peace with yourself all the time during this struggle. You are known by your goals does not matter you achieve them or not, but you got the willingness to admit to those things and asking for help. Surround yourself with people who are ten years ahead of you in the same areas you want to improve. Failure is part of life, and life means you are living. It means you are genuinely trying. It means you have dreams. Let people watch you fail. Dust yourself and again and again, keep going. Be patient with the time because time will pass does not matter what. In the end, it is how your train your mind and thoughts.

Canadians Deserve Answers About Vaccines
“When will I be able to get the vaccine?” I know that is THE question that has been on a lot of people’s minds as we pass the oneyear mark since the first case of COVID-19 was detected in Canada. Canadians have been patient and resilient throughout the course of the pandemic, but I know that for many, patience is running out. The lockdowns and restrictions that were put in place early in the pandemic were supposed to buy governments time to get permanent solutions like
vaccines, rapid testing, variant testing capacity, and therapeutics – these tools now exist. The problem is, the Prime Minister hasn’t succeeded in bringing them to widespread use in Canada. Instead, Canada’s daily vaccination rate is the lowest in the G7 and panic and confusion continues to surround the Liberals’ new hastily conceived travel restrictions. Recently, the Liberals announced that Novavax will produce its COVID-19 vaccine at a still-under-construction facility in Montreal. While the Prime Minister initially said that the facility could be ready to produce shots by as “early as this summer”, Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne later clarified that the earliest possible production start date is likely “at the end of this year”. This means we will have zero vaccines manufactured in Canada before the Liberals’ self-imposed September deadline to have enough vaccines for every Canadian who wants one. Instead, for the rest of 2021, Canada’s vaccine rollout will be
completely at the whims of foreign countries and companies. Unfortunately, it seems like every day there is news of cancelled deliveries or delays on shipments. We need the government to succeed in securing vaccines for the sake of all Canadians – but the Prime Minister continues to let us down. We cannot secure jobs, we cannot secure our economy, we cannot secure the future until any Canadian who wants to get vaccinated can. By now, Canadians should know when things are going to get better. Instead, the Liberals keep asking Canadians to sacrifice more without being clear about when restrictions can be eased. You deserve better than this. That is why my Conservative colleagues and I will continue to call on the Liberals to give Canadians a clear plan and the information they deserve. Claudette Huber metaphysics and more Claudette Huber has lived all over the Peace Region — five different towns to be exact — and has made a home in Dawson Creek running a metaphysical store. She has a passion for offering something new and alternative to the community, and has an engaging vision for the downtown core. “We want to be that soft place, where people can come and be themselves, and escape that corporate, cardboard sterile kind of environment where nobody really connects with you,” Huber said. “Dawson Creek is the centre, the hub of the Peace Region, and we need to start thinking like it. I want to see an old-town, downtown kind of feel, and I hope the look of our shop triggers other places in the community to do something similar. How can we become more of a com-
munity, and look even more prettier than it already does?” On advice for women looking to start a business: “It’s a lot tougher being a women in business, but if you put the hours into it and have the dream to build it, you can do it. I tell people if you believe in something you go for it, and don’t begrudge any assistance along the way or think you’re less-than because you had help.” “Make sure you have a great plan, and do your research ahead of time.”

On the women running organizations in Dawson Creek : “There are a lot of organizations run by women in this community, its really amazing to see us all come together and be open to work together. When you get a lot of strong, opinionated, passionate people, women or men, you’ll get differences of opinion, but the people in this town are really great to work with, people who are confident and secure in themselves.”

When you start to get to know these people, if I had to go through what they did, I realize I would be where they are too, you cant judge. It sucks you in, this line of work. It’s very demanding, very busy, and frustrating, but seeing that change it can make in peoples’ lives is worthwhile.”

Calving season is officially here for 2021 and with it comes the joy of new birth as well as the challenges of potentially difficult calving’s and prolapses. In this article I’m going to go through a few tips for when intervention is required and what to do if you need to assist. The majority of cows will deliver their calf on their own in a short period of time. However, when the first stage of labor has been going on for more than 6 hours, i.e. the cow is restless, showing maternal behavior or tail kinked sideways it could mean that she has a uterine torsion, or a breech calf (only the bum is presenting) in which case no feet will show from the vulva and you should call your vet. Stage two labour is defined as the first appearance of the water bag, to when the calf is delivered. In a normal cow this usually occurs within 2 hours – if no progress has occurred in this time frame, she should be examined. At this point ideally one puts the cow in a maternity pen or squeeze to work on safely. Be patient and careful when handling cattle during labour. Even the nicest cow on a normal day can turn aggressive when she is moved; hormones are sky rocketing and she is uncomfortable. Once the cow is restrained wash her vulva with soap and warm water then put on long

Pet obesity is a big problem Obesity is one of the major current medical concerns of companion animals, most notably through predisposing to medical conditions such as diabetes mellitus, osteoarthritis, respiratory disease and neoplasia. 50% of pets are overweight, and 90% of pet owners don’t realize it. If your veterinarian has suggested weight management for your pet, talk to us about Hill’s Metabolic weight management products. obstetrical gloves. Enter the vulva and advance to where you feel the calf. Normally, you will find 2 front legs and a head. You can put calving chains on both front legs and remember to place the first loop above the calf’s fetlock (ankle joint), then make a half hitch in the chain and place it below the fetlock. This will reduce the risk of fracturing the calf’s leg when you are pulling. When deciding how hard to pull use the 275 lbs. rule of thumb (when the cervix is completely dilated). 275lbs is roughly the pulling capacity of one large strong person, or two smaller people. You should be able to pull the calf’s shoulders into the pelvis by hand. The knees should be visible, without slipping back in once you have let the tension go. If you achieve this you should be able to pull the calf by hand or with a calf jack. Being a smaller person myself, I find the use of calf jack incredibly helpful but use it carefully and with respect. When pulling the calf don’t rush, pull when the cow pushes. If the calf is coming normal presentation and you cannot engage it this far or the legs are crossed and the head will not engage into the pelvis a C-section will likely be required. If the calf gets hip locked when it is three quarters of the way out try rotating the calf in order to give you a bit more space between the calf’s pelvis and the cow’s pelvis. If the calf is quite dry or tight apply lubricant around the calf to allow it to slide easier. Tangled legs may also happen with twins or a weirdly positioned calf so try and identify if you have front or back legs and make sure they are from the same animal before you start pulling. Once the calf is out; if it’s been a tough pull and is having difficulty breathing put it in calf recovery position (upright on its chest (sternal) with its hind legs tucked up underneath it). You can stimulate it by tickling its nose with straw and vigorously rubbing it. Check the cow does not have a twin inside (even if it has a large calf always check) – with clean gloves and also make sure the cow has colostrum in her udder. With a difficult calving – calves often are a bit slower to get up and suck therefore tubing them with a some commercial colostrum or milking out the cow and tubing/bottle feeding for the first feeding is a good idea. Occasionally a cow will prolapse their uterus post calving typically following a difficult calving though it can happen when they calve on a downward slope or if they are an overweight/unfit cow. A uterine prolapse will only happen post calving in comparison to a vaginal prolapse that will most commonly happen before calving. The uterus appears as a large fleshy red mass with the buttons (or cotelydons) attached to the outside. It is very important not to move the cow very much after this happens since movement will often result in tearing of the tissue or the uterine artery. Call the vet out to your farm rather than hauling into the clinic for these cases. If the uterus can be replaced quickly and it is not damaged most cows will have a good prognosis. Delivering calves can be a very rewarding experience and your intervention can often save lives. Stock your calving supplies before the season starts, keep your barn/handling facility clean and be ready to assist. Have you vet’s phone number handy and keep your trailer ready/cleared out of the snow bank. We are very happy to assist you with your calving needs but can help out more producers/get to your calving sooner if you have the ability to haul into our clean/well lite and heated facility. May new life be abundant and the joy of seeing a new calf try its legs out for the first time never cease to amaze you! Wishing you all the very best for a safe and prosperous calving season!

Tammy Schmidt - keeping healthy with new ideas Tammy Schmidt owns a gym in Dawson Creek, and has since 2010. She was going through some changes in her career, and was ready for a new challenge. She especially liked the direction the gym was heading in. “Rather than taking the historical route of catering strictly to body building enthusiasts, the gym had a refreshingly comfortable and welcoming feel that any ordinary person wishing to promote their health could feel at home in. It felt different and exciting. I could see an opportunity here to put my skills to work and, at the same time, try out new ideas and become an important part of the community.” On her role models in Dawson Creek : “Dawson Creek has a solid foundation of support and opportunities for a woman to succeed in the business world. Kathleen Connolly, with the Chamber of Commerce, has been a role model and support of mine for many years. Her passion for helping our community especially during the pandemic has given me the inspiration needed to get through this uncertain time.”
“There is also an incredible group of local businesswomen and entrepreneurs in our town. This is where most of my support has been found. Building relationships, working together and being there for each other has allowed me to grow personally on so many levels. It’s nice to have someone to collaborate with, who understands your struggles, is there to cheer you on and truly wants to see you and your business thrive. I feel blessed to be a part of this community that’s full of powerful, hard working woman who are making their dreams come true in a variety of businesses.”
City to close Kin arena With usage only at about a seven percent increase with a second arena open, Dawson Creek city council made the decision this morning to close the Kin Arena. The decision was made this morning at the City of Dawson Creek’s regular council meeting - currently being held. The facility will be closed this weekend. In October 2020, President of Dawson Creek Minor Hockey Aaron Bull presented at city council Monday to plead on behalf of 250 hockey players and their families. “We feel that in the North there is not a ton to do in the winter time,” said Bull, noting registration was down from 292 at the beginning of the season to 250 now.” Minor hockey also wrote a letter to council calling for the Kin to be opened. “We feel there will be a lot of children that will not get to participate in these sports, and people who have withdrawn because the value of what they are receiving has decreased. editor@dcdn.ca
NWJHL season over For the second straight year, there will be no NWJHL champion, and nobody to lift the Senators Cup. The NWJHL, along with all junior and senior leagues part of Hockey Alberta, made the decision to end the 2020-21 regular season. The decision came following a meeting between league representatives and Hockey Alberta on Feb. 8. “The NWJHL including all six teams, though saddened by this news,
remains focused and will wait for the AHS restrictions to be lifted in order to get back to on-ice development and exhibition games to put a proper end to a dismal season,” the league said in a statement. “The NWJHL would like to express its appreciation to all the teams for hanging in there and remaining positive throughout all this.” editor@dcdn.ca

B&E in progress call leads to foot chase, and pair charged Two men face a series of charges after Dawson Creek RCMP responded to B&E in progress. Mark Roth and Jared Holland both face charges of breaking and enter, mischief, and possession of counterfeit money after RCMP were dispatched to a Dawson Creek business in the early morning hours of February 7. When on-duty security guards and responding RCMP officers were directed to the last known location of suspects a foot-chase ensued, with officers chasing after one suspect, finally catching him after several blocks at which time he was arrested. Police Service Dog -Hammer-, and partner Cst. Qualstrom were called on scene. Hammer successfully tracked the second male and within minutes located him hiding nearby, at which time he was also arrested. Investigation determined that the suspects had cut a hole in chain link fencing, through which they gained access to the business property. Roth, 45, faces charges of break and enter, mischief, and possession of counterfei money, while Holland 28, faces the same plus and additional charge of possession of break-in tools. The pair appeared before a DC court on February 8. editor@dcdn.ca

GoMack been keeping buyers coming back for 50 years
Rob Brown Managing Editor When I connect with GOMACK family – they are collectively prepping to get animals ready for next month’s Bull sale at Vold Jones Vold in Dawson Creek. “We are getting the bulls ready for March’s Bull sale at Dawson Creek,” says Tawnya Gough, Kenny’s daughter. Scott and Tawnya’s children represent the fourth generation of Mackenzies. But before we look forward with Gomack, we have to go back. In 1962 the Mackenzie Brothers sensed a change was needed in their cattle operation, as a result, we purchased the first Registered Red Angus Herd in Canada and I purchased additional females as well,” says Kenny Mackenzie to the Northern Horizon. From 1962 to 1968 the Canadian Angus Association would not recognize Red Angus Cattle to register so their cattle were registered with American Red Angus Association (USA). In 1968 was a big step forward in history when the Canadian Angus Association opened their books to register the Red Angus Cattle. “During this same time frame, my brother Rodney took our cattle to the shows, where I would meet up with him to help after teaching school. It was very difficult showing because the Red Angus Cattle were not accepted yet. My brother Rodney had a special something about him –he did the best he could to win—and we did! “We pulled through coming up on top winning Grand and Reserve Championships putting Red Angus Cattle in the limelight,” he adds. “Rodney was willing to help other breeders if they
needed help and did many more things to help that were unseen by others. Soon it became a “family” of showing, everyone looking out for each other.” In 1971 was the First Production Sale of Registered Red Angus Cattle in Canada at our Ranch in Mountain View, Alberta. Prior to 1971, I sold a bull calf to Cuba. “In 1972 I went to Mobile, Alabama, to purchase cattle for the Mackenzie Brothers-- a total of 35 head. I also have purchased cattle in Texas, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia. We’ve been pretty much everywhere there was a Red Angus,” Mackenzie says: “If we heard about a red animal, we went to check it out.” At the Canadian Red Round Up in 1977, Ken was presented a plaque for the Highest Selling Female award. “Our Daughter, Kansie Kae, was crowned as the Canadian Angus Queen in 1981.” In 1998 the Mackenzie family was awarded the Alberta Century Farm and Ranch award for 100 years of family ranching on the Mackenzie homestead. Mackenzie has received many awards along with his brothers such as: an award presented by the Red Angus Association of America in 1979 for the Annual Pioneer Breeder Award; also awarded the 50 most influential breeders award by the American Red Angus Association; Honorary Presidents award by the Canadian Angus Ass. in 2004; again in 2006 the Alberta Angus Hall of Fame inductee award; then in 2017, 50 years of membership in Canadian Angus Association, to which he has a lifelong membership. “After my brother Rodney passed away, my showing days slowed down, until our sons were old enough to help. They both completed the 4-H Program, bringing home Grand
and Reserve champion banners with our Red Angus Cattle. Then Showing cattle continued on into our Grandchildren, traveling from fair to fair, and also completing the 4-H program, bringing home Grand and Reserve champion banners. I am very proud of them all, they achieve more than just winning, they developed traits of their Great / Uncle Rodney being a “Family” of showing,” says Mackenzie. The “Family showing” continued on with my Mackenzie Red Angus herd. In 2009 we received Bronze medalist at the Worlds Angus Forum and Supreme Grand Champion at the BC Angus Gold show, with our 50T bull. We have won many awards, ribbons, and banners with our cattle over the years.
But I think the high light of my showing was winning the Supreme Grand Champion Bull. The herd was later transferred to his daughter, Tawnya Gough- Mackenzie, and her family- Scott, Braydon and Kaily Gough, with their registered herd established in 2008 as: GOMACK Red Angus. “Now in 2021, I am celebrating 50 years of the longest Annual Registered Red Angus Bull sale. Many times, you will hear me being quoted ‘Cattle have always been a big part of my life, and will continue to be to my last day, they have never hurt me’,” adds Kenny. Next week, looking forward with GoMack! editor@dcdn.ca

father married “Mary.” We believe it was out of loneliness. She is 15 years younger than him and has a drinking problem. She says the drinking is under control, but it is quite clear it isn’t. She has a record for driving under the influence and for drug possession charges. Again, we were told it was all under control.
Annie’s Mailbox
My sister and I have been ignored, talked about, lied about and made to feel unwelcome in our dad’s home. However, we put all that aside because our dad said he was happy and that she took care of him. We continued to try and get along with Mary. The problem is that he is seriously ill now after having his second stroke, and she is being very cruel and secretive with information and updates on our dad’s health. She has said more than once, “He is my husband.” So? He is and always will be my dad and my responsibility. I’ve tried to explain that this not the time for childish drama; we need to come together and do what’s best for our dad. But she slams the door in our face every time. I am not walking away from my dad. What is the resolution here? When our dad gets out of the hospital, he does not need this. What do I do? — Emotionally Drained Dear Emotionally Drained: First, I am very sorry about your dad’s stroke. May his recovery and rehabilitation be easy. Second, I’m sorry to hear that your relationship with your stepmother is so strained. You don’t deserve to be treated rudely, and “Mary” does not own your father. However, let’s take a look at who’s being childish here. You’ve labeled Mary a “wicked stepmother,” cite her history of addiction as a moral failing and fault her for wanting to take care of her husband. I agree with you. It’s time to set aside the dramatics and focus on what matters here — your dad’s health. If you’re willing to own where you’ve been at fault in this not-so-happily ever after, your “wicked” stepmom might do the same. However, if your stepmom continues to keep her husband from his children, that could constitute abusive behavior. Your best option would be to find an attorney to advise you on your options. Dear Annie: I’d like to comment on the letter from “Wedding Woes,” where the husband of the disabled daughter is not invited to the wedding. This is wrong on every level. But if the daughter really wants to go, perhaps her husband could assist her with the arrangements and travel but not attend the wedding. (Perhaps her mom could take over during the ceremony and reception.) Then the daughter and her husband could enjoy a few days on vacation and turn a “challenging” trip into something fun. The wedding only lasts a couple of hours, but the fun vacation memories could last a lifetime. — Making the Best of It Dear Making the Best of It: Thank you for your letter and the advice to take a possibly distressing event and make it work for everyone. When life gives you lemons make some lemonade and enjoy.. “Ask Me Anything: A Year of Advice From Dear Annie” is out now!
