We caught this rascal pushing eggs and chocolate over the long weekend. It was not a gathering.
With weekend Provincial Health Orders precluding indoor dining until at least April 19 – a pair of local Chamber of Commerce offices and Community Futures Peace Liard have taken the lead in corralling lists of all restaurants switching to takeout and delivery services. Tumbler Ridge executive director Jerrilyn Ernst Kirk says with only a half dozen restaurants in town – food stuffs can be few and far between. Between employment and customers – restaurants touch many in TR. Kirk says the Chamber’s role is more than just reactionary – but proactive. “We’re on the lookout for grants that our members can apply for, and more.” In Tumbler Ridge, Kinuseo Café, Woods Diner, the Western Steakhouse by 242 Brew, Dragon Palace, Joe’s Pizza, and Subway are all operating with at least take out services or more. A similar restaurant list was generated in Chetwynd as well with restaurants updating their availability and services – while the local Chamber has also generated a fun bingo card for residents to support local restaurants.

all sourced locally and eating perennial forages at her farm, as well as vermicompost, to examine their impacts on the health and fertility of Peace Region’s clay soils. Traverse will pull from her knowledge base, planting each of the trials using the Indigenous method of Phenology (moon phase planting), taught to her by her mentor, Mohawk Seed keeper Rowen White, to dictate the most ideal time for the seeds. This project will blend western science with traditional Indigenous ways of knowing, in a
way that Traverse hopes can be modelled and customized for other regions and communities. The partnership has already had the participants looking at ways in which research can be decolonized and tailored to suit the farm and grower involved, and to have the lead taken by Traverse on such things as manageable plot sizes, seed choice and seeding rate. The first year will be a testing of Fava Beans, and year two is oats, all organically-grown heirlooms. “Diversity is our strength, and when we collaborate and learn from one another it opens the door to tremendous opportunities. This 55K partnership between Agriculture and AgriFood Canada and Fourth Sister Farm offers a new perspective on soil health that will support farmers growing in the Peace Country, and potentially other communities. I look forward to seeing their final results,” said the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. editor@dcdn.ca

The outfit is awarding 13 $2,000 scholarships, including three Indigenous Forestry Scholarships in partnership with the New Relationship Trust Foundation (NRTF). “We are pleased to support the next generation of students as they seek to advance their education goals and learn about the forest industry of the future,” said Susan Yurkovich, President and CEO of COFI. “We are also excited to be partnering with the New Relationship Trust Foundation to support Indigenous students interested in pursuing future employment in forestry and as we look to further increase the participation of Indigenous people and communities in our sector.”

“The New Relationship Trust Foundation is very excited to partner with the BC Council of Forest Industries to offer Indigenous focused forestry scholarships,” said Matt Cook-Contois, Senior Associate – Programs Specialist, NRTF. “Indigenous students face an inordinate number of barriers when planning to attend post-secondary programs. COFI is demonstrating a strong commitment to reconciliation by investing in Indigenous education and providing Indigenous students further opportunity to build a stronger Indigenous future.” The closing date for applying for the scholarships this year is June 4. DC, Chetwynd, and Tumbler regional airports pick up provincial funding The Dawson Creek Regional Airport is receiving $360,000 in provincial support. The funding is part of a $16.5-million package the province says will help maintain air terminals, runways, and other operations for the essential movement of goods and people. “Our government is working to keep vital services operating during this unprecedented time, and this funding will help British Columbians - especially those in rural areas of the province - have a safe and reliable way to travel to essential appointments,” said Transportation Minister Rob Fleming in a statement. It has been noted passenger counts throughout the region dropped, including at the North Peace Regional Airport - which dropped last year to levels not seen in a decade due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Other airports receiving funding in the northeast are: FSJ Airport: $720,000 Northern Rockies Regional Airport: $360,000 Fort Ware (Kwadacha) Airport: $360,000 Chetwynd Airport: $90,000 Mackenzie Airport: $90,000 Valemount Airport: $37,000 Tumbler Ridge Airport: $34,000 editor@dcdn.ca

Senior’s Hall sees almost $5000 in support Between larger donations and individual ones, Fay Clease with the Dawson Creek Senior’s Hall says almost $5,000 has been raised by the community through donations. “It has been great so far,” she notes. The organization reached out the Mirror after noting a lack of operational funding – and unable to cover monthly bills for the hall. The Mirror was on hand last week for Frank Ripley’s donation, while this week we caught the Dawson Creek and area Elks Doug Becote (right), and DC Recycling (below) donating to the hall and its (grand) parent group – the South Peace Senior Citizens Association. The Association is the non profit running the day to day

business of the seniors hall. The association manages the facilities of the organization and provides seniors activities – should gathering be allowed once again. “At this time we have floor curling, carpet bowling, an exercise group line dancing, darts, pools crib, bridge and crafts – was well as Monday lunches,” she notes. Income comes from membership fees and hall rentals – which are not happening at the moment. “Due to the pandemic we have been closed for a year and this has affected our operating account,” says Clease. “Thank you to all of these people for their generous donations thus far,” adds Clease. editor@dcdn.ca

KUCHARUK: it is now time to get rid of the house phone Judy Kucharuk Columnist Yes, I know that we are a little late to the game and that many folks have already abandoned their home phone aka ‘land-line’. I laugh when I type ‘land-line’ because will my grandchildren even know what I am referring to when I say, “We used to have something called a land-line when you were little”. They will look at us with the same look they used when we tried to explain a VCR cassette tape. Have you ever asked a child what the symbol is for, “I am on the phone” or “Call me”? For my peers and I, it is your hand near your ear with your pinkie pointed to your chin, your thumb to your ear and the other fingers curled in towards the palm. Kids will not do that, instead they will make the motion as if they are holding a calculator to the ear. They have only known the cell phone. There used to be a sense of urgency when the house phone would ring. A yell would puncture the air with, “Someone get the phone!” and then the sound of footsteps to get to the phone before it stopped ringing. Heaven forbid if you missed the call. Back in the day you would not even know what call you missed! There was no recall on the screen, there was no *69 to hear the last number that called your line. You were left in the dark…..wondering who called. Your anxiety about the missed call would be assuaged with the reasoning of “If it was important, they will call back”. Now, we barely flinch when the home phone rings knowing that the caller could a) leave a voice message, or b) hear your voice message that says to call your cell phone. If the cell phone starts ringing immediately after the missed home phone call, then you know it is important. Basically, my home phone is a giant answering service that directs all important calls to our cell phones. I guess it is probably time to let ours go.

Dawson Creek sees big time online attendance More people are faithfully congregating online in Dawson Creek. For the second year in a row, Jehovah’s Witnesses across British Columbia gathered online for their most important event of the year – the Memorial of Christ’s death. The event was held on Saturday, March 27, 2021. Prior to the Memorial, Jehovah’s Witnesses made a concerted effort to reach out to members of the community by means of letter writing and phone calls, inviting anyone interested to attend the free event. “While we would prefer to meet in person, we don’t view the restrictions on gatherings as restricting our freedom of worship, but rather restricting the spread of the virus,” said Paul Andersen, spokesman for
DRAGNET!
Jehovah’s Witnesses in British Columbia. Jehovah’s Witnesses in the Dawson Creek area saw a total attendance of 260 at the Memorial of Christ’s death. This represents a 52 per cent increase when compared to their regular weekly attendance. “It is always nice being able to visit with friends face to face. We miss the being together physically, being able to shake hands, and to mingle freely,” said Rodney Harmon, an elder in the Dawson Creek congregation. “However, we have actually seen an increase in meeting attendance.” “Many are seeing the rapidly deteriorating world conditions, which moves them to give priority to spiritual encouragement,” Rodney added. editor@dcdn.ca

Kane among 14 British Columbians getting BC Medal of Good Citizenship
“We are so fortunate in British Columbia to live amongst so many unsung heroes. These outstanding, remarkable and selfless leaders make our communities shine brightly.” Medals will be presented at virtual ceremonies in a few months. To date, 90 citizens and two communities have received the medal. In addition to the Medal of Good Citizenship, people may be nominated for the Province’s other honour, the Order of British Columbia. This honour recognizes people who have served with the greatest distinction and excelled in any field of endeavour, benefiting British Columbians and others across Canada and beyond. The nomination deadline for the Order of British Columbia has been extended to April 9, 2021. editor@dcdn.ca

A Rolla resident is among fourteen people from around British Columbia who will receive the Province’s Medal of Good Citizenship for their outstanding service and commitment to helping others in their communities. Donna Kane has been awarded the Medal of Good Citizenship. “This important honour recognizes people who have gone above and beyond to offer help and kindness to others during these exceptionally challenging times,” said Premier John Horgan. “The latest recipients of the Medal of Good Citizenship make our province a better place through their contributions and provide an example we can all aspire to meet in our communities.” Launched in 2015, the Medal of Good Citizenship recognizes individuals who, through exceptional dedication and service, have made outstanding contributions to their communities without expectation of remuneration or reward.

Day-use pilot project slated for Montney Centennial Park Montney Centennial Park will be part of a day-use pilot project starting in spring 2021. Over this three year period the park will be available for day-use exclusive activities. The project was approved to accommodate much needed upgrades to the park including the development of trails, installing a picnic shelter, installing a fishing dock, updated signage and improvements to walkways and outhouses. The goal of this project is to expand the recreational pursuits at the park and attract a broader range of visitors for unique experiences that are not readily available in the surrounding area. Come for a picnic, launch a canoe or fish off the shoreline! The PRRD also supports partnerships with clubs and organizations to create fun activities in the park. If you have an idea please reach out to Community Services staff at 250 784-3200.
