DC’s Readman new head coach of Kootenay Posse The 2021-22 Kootenay International Junior Hockey League season can’t start soon enough for Mark Readman. The Dawson Creek, B.C. native was recently named the Princeton Posse’s new head coach and assistant GM. He hasn’t been a head coach since he was the bench boss of the Dawson Creek Junior Canucks in 2019-20. He was the Canucks’ assistant coach and assistant GM for two seasons before that. He joins the Posse from the Creston Valley Thunder Cats, coaching alongside GM Bill Rotheisler, who is excited for the 25-yearold taking on this new challenge. Rotheisler’s close connection to Posse GM Mark McNaughton helped during the hiring process. “Mark was a great addition to the team and was one of the reasons we were able to maintain a positive attitude throughout this past season,” Rotheisler said on the Thunder Cats website. “He always contributed great ideas to practices and was popular and approachable with the players. I have no doubt he’ll have success with Princeton and exceed their expectations.” Readman views himself as more of a players coach. “My ability to relate and communicate with players is pretty strong. I get pretty close with
players,” says Readman. Readman learned that approach from his mentor and former Ontario Avalanche coach Chris Shaw, a former Kootenay International Junior Hockey League coach with the Nelson Leafs. Shaw gave Readman a chance as a player when he knew very little about him. Readman saw how transparent Shaw was with players, but also put in the effort to get to know them. Readman also saw how Shaw created a competitive environment. “He always told me, ‘it’s my job to push you every single day until you hit your wall. And then it’s my job to get you to blow past that wall and break it down. Remember every single night you shut your eyes, that wall magically rebuilds itself 10 feet further from where it started,’” Readman recalled. “‘You have to work that much harder to get right back up to the wall. Knock it down and move it another 10 feet the next day.” Readman also received valuable advice from former NHL head coach Ken Hitchcock, which was to always make time to talk to five players every day about something other than hockey. “It forces you to go out of your way and talk to guys. Get to know them,” says Readman, who last played hockey in 2017-18 with the
Dawson Creek Canucks, playing three games. “With my past experiences, and some of my strengths I feel I can bring into the environment in Princeton, there is a chance for us to have some success.” Readman’s coaching resume includes quickly climbing the ranks of Dawson Creek Minor Hockey, North East B.C. and the Yukon Trackers. What drew Readman to the Posse are the people in the organization and the opportunity. He and McNaughton share the same vision. “It was just through connections between myself and Mark seeing eye-to-eye on a lot of things in terms of
organizational growth, player development, but at the same time, prioritizing team success,” says Readman. “It was just kind of a natural fit. It was one that was really hard to turn down. I thought I was ready to be a head coach again and especially in a league as highly touted as the KIJHL,” continued Readman. “It was a really hard opportunity for me to turn down.” Readman is looking to add more of his own spices “to a dish that’s already pretty damn good.” “One key of Princeton is they never really sacrifice individual development for team success,” says Readman. “It’s just all part of the
same package. You look at their history, their ability to produce and move players on to the next level. Whether it’s the BCHL, AJHL, I think that goes hand-in-hand with the expectation. I love players that are driven. I want guys to want to be successful.” Players will earn Readman’s respect through hard work. He wants his team to play at a high pace and always push it. He wants the Posse to put teams on their heels.

Services Minister says connectivity investments are key for north Harder, better, faster, stronger is more than just lyrics to a Kanye West hit song. It is also the mantra of better Internet services in more rural areas of the Peace region. More reliable Internet service is coming to people in 19 northern communities this year, including Rolla. Minister of Citizens’ Service Lisa Beare says it hard to imagine
running a business today without high-speed Internet, and yet that’s exactly what many people in northern B.C. deal with. “We have a commitment to providing high speed connectivity – it is vital for modern world,” said Beare to the Mirror last week. “Many people don’t have access to the speeds they need

If one thinks they are removed from Residential Schools in the Peace region, or in Dawson Creek - think again. The nearest former residential school location to Mile Zero is two hours away on the shores of Sturgeon Lake, Alberta. St. Francis Xavier Residential School operated well after the Alaska Highway was constructed. It was first decided for the area in October 1907, after Roman Catholic missionaries opened a small boarding school near Calais, Alberta in 1905. According to Truth and Reconciliation documents, the school was also known as Calais, or Calais Indian Residential School, St. Francis Xavier, and St. Francis Xavier Residential School. Haunting to former students no matter its name. The school operated for more than 50 years until June 30, 1961. Questions. Today there are many graves marked circa 1980 and onward, as the community and area moved forward past the history of the school. However, prior to these more here and now deaths, there seems to be less records of them noted on the area grounds. Why? Questions. National Centre for
Truth Reconciliation Archives record about 25 deaths related to the school during its the 50 year history. What school could lose two students a year these days? Or even then? Some children less than a year old. What brings birth to a boarding school? Questions. A new school was constructed in 1910 and again in 1922, with new dormitories being added in 1944. By 1954, it was concluded that the school was too dilapidated to repair. Instead it was decided that it should be closed and replaced with a day school. However, construction of the day school did not begin until 1961 and the boarding school remained in operation until 1962. Near the former location of the school stands what appears to be the original Roman Catholic church structure for the area. A longer amble away is the current cemetery. Questions. If the post-1960 deaths were decided to be interned in fields further away – what is wrong with the ground of the first two fields? Why not inter the more newly passed there? What should be looked at is the two fields that are not the “current” cemetery.
These fields are marked as potential grave sites, but certainly differently. What lies underneath this ground? What lies beyond the treeline before the cliff fall to the lakeshore? Questions. On Monday, locals - from residences clearly built in the shadow of the former school, installed new signed honouring the discovered Kamloops 215 while a new modern education centre shone in the distance, visible from the public highway. Signs were installed over the weekend on the location of the former residential school. “Honouring all our Sturgeon Lake survivors of IRS and those gone to the spirit world.” “Prayers to all the children that did not make it home.” A National Residential School Crisis Line has been set up to provide support to former students. This 24Hour Crisis Line can be accessed at 1-866-925-4419. Robert Brown Managing Editor Dawson Creek Mirror

Groundbrich 4-H ready for their sale Another 4H year is coming to an end, and though it’s been an odd year, with restrictions limiting the gatherings and events that organizations can hold, members of the Groundbirch 4-H Community Club are getting a lot out of the program nonetheless. Casey Bergen, along with the six other Groundbirch club members, will be showing and selling their cattle and steers this Saturday, June 12, for the
club’s beef Achievement Day Show and Sale. This is Bergen’s first year in 4H, and it’s been all she was hoping for, despite the restrictions. At 15, she had usually played hockey in Chetwynd throughout the school year, and decided this would be the perfect year to give 4H a try with hockey not really taking place for the season. “I learned so much, a lot about my projects, about public speaking, and marketing. I really like it,
and definitely want to do it next year. I ‘ll keep going with 4H as long as I can,” Bergen said. For her communication project this year, she spoke about dietary fats at both regionals and the district event, and plans to speak on it again at the provincial communications session in August. Bergen’s brother, Carter (13), Brooke Rainey (10), and Jake Rainey (12) are all in their first year of 4H, while members Payden
Liberals Must Demand Answers on New Long-Gun Registry Allegations
Since forming government, the Liberals have repeatedly assured our forest industry and Canadians that negotiating a new Softwood Lumber Agreement with the United States is a priority. However, as the saying goes, actions speak louder than words. The fact is Canada has been without a new Softwood Lumber Agreement since the fall of 2015 and duties have been imposed on Canadian imports since 2017. The Liberal government also failed to negotiate softwood lumber into the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement. At a Natural Resources Committee meeting in February, I questioned the Honourable Mary Ng, Minister of Small Business, Export Promotion and International Trade, about whether negotiating a new Softwood Lumber Agreement came up during the first bilateral agreement between the
Prime Minister and President Joe Biden. The Minister refused to give a straightforward answer, and I could only conclude from her response that it was not discussed and is therefore not a priority for this government. Recent events have confirmed my suspicions. U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai recently told U.S. Senators that, “In order to have an agreement and in order to have a negotiation, you need to have a partner. And thus far, the Canadians have not expressed interest in engaging.” And then, on May 21 came news that the United States Department of Commerce is moving to double duties on imports of Canadian softwood lumber from 8.99 per cent to 18.32 per cent. Instead of taking any meaningful action to secure a Softwood Lumber Agreement, we are now seeing a step backwards with this announcement. During a recent Question Period, I asked the Minister about these new developments and why the Liberals refuse to come to the table to negotiate a new agreement. Then at committee, Natural Resources Minister Seamus O’Regan evaded my direct question asking if the Liberal government was negotiating a Softwood Lumber Agreement, yes or no. He then went on to say: The U.S. hasn’t been willing... we are.” Who is telling the truth? I’ll let you be the judge.
The Standing Committee on Natural Resources recently tabled a report on the economic recovery of Canada’s forestry sector, which included a dissenting report from Conservative Members of the committee, including myself. Our dissenting report points out the Liberals’ lack of effort in securing a Softwood Lumber Agreement and their continued delay in providing Canadians with a detailed plan on how they will fulfill their promise to plant two billion trees in ten years. The report also highlights the need for the government to recognize the significant progress the forest industry has made in environmental protection and sustainable resource development. The news over the last few weeks makes it increasingly apparent that securing a Softwood Lumber Agreement is vital to our forestry sector’s longterm stability. We British Columbians have seen firsthand the devastating impact this failure by the Liberal government has had on our mills and communities in recent years. My Conservative colleagues and I understand how important this sector is to our national economy and will continue to work to secure predictability in our forestry sector for its workers and their families.
Bueckert (11), BrookeLynn Bueckert, and Layton Unruh (11) are in their third, fourth, and second years, respectively, of 4H. Bergen said she will miss her steer, Dudley, but is looking forward to a lot of aspects about the show and sale as well. “It’s going to be really sad to say goodbye, he’s super friendly, I saddle him and ride him, and he gets a lot of attention,” she said. “I’m looking forward
to the grooming part of Achievement Days, and competing against others as well.” The beef show starts at 2 p.m. at the Dawson Creek Fairgrounds. The meet and greet with the members begins at 4 p.m., with the sale starting 6 p.m. at the Dawson Creek VJV. Above, Casey with the club.

Pouce Coupe byelection in holding pattern; senior staff on leave The Village of Pouce Coupe by-election has taken another turn. Senior staff who would traditionally fullfil the roles of returning officer and other electoral titles are on stress/medical leave and/or vacation. The Mirror has learned Ministry of Municipal Affairs officials are in contact to both fulfil positions temporary on staff. Last week the Village noted to the public nomination packages for a by-election set for July 10. The Village announced on the day it began accepting nominations for a pair of positions - packages would not be available. In April, councillor Donna White became the second Pouce Coupe councillor to resign, citing medical reasons. “Under doctors advice I am doing this for my health,” she said. White’s resignation is the second after Ken Drover resigned earlier this year in February. White had taken on many of Drover’s portfolio positions abandoned, as well as many stripped by council from Mayor Lorraine Michetti. White was also the village’s alternative representative on the PRRD board after Michetti. White said there are internal issues existing prior to Michetti’s infamous social media posting concerning pipeline construction earlier this year. “We have had countless in camera meetings all throughout last year concerning staff.”
In February - village CAO Chris Leggett said with so much time before the next municipal election - a by election would be triggered should any member of Bob Zimmer council or the mayor step down. The next municipal Member of Parliament election is slated for October 15, 2022.

The Dawson Creek Pride Society has plans to lay a fresh coat of paint on the community’s rainbow crosswalk - and the City of Dawson Creek is on board. It remains the only permanent symbol of the LGBTQ2S+ community in Dawson Creek, repeatedly vandalized last year. With Pride Week in full bloom, Society board member Chelsea Mackay penned a letter to city council on May 17, asking the city to repaint the crosswalk with a new and even more inclusive design, and to raise the flag. “We’re all volunteers here, so we do what we can,” said Mackay. “We care less about skid marks, but spray painting has been a real problem.” The society has offered to volunteer their time to help repaint with the new design, which sports pink, and white stripes to represent the trans community, while black and brown stripes represent people of colour. “We believe the addition of these colours will present our community as an even more inclusive and progressive city,” stated Mackay in her letter. Dawson Creek Mayor Dale Bumstead says city council approved the repaint and raising of the flag at their Monday meeting. “Council has no issue at all with the aspects of the new design, for us it’s just making sure we secure the paint that’s needed, staff are on it and it’ll be along shortly,” said Bumstead. The city repainted the walk along 15th street last June, with many residents coming out to enjoy photo ops and selfies at the site. tsummer@ahnfsj.ca

tournament with swirling fundraiser Forget about merely anticipating the return to a normal season once Covid restrictions loosen. The Dawson Creek Volleyball Club’s U15 Girls team has its eyes set on celebrating next season on a whole other level, with a trip to Honolulu for the 2022 TransPacific Volleyball Championships next January. “The girls practiced so hard all last year with strict Covid rules in place. They had to wear a mask, couldn’t play games, but they were so committed and went to every practice. We thought, ‘what if we went real big and took them to Hawaii as an award?’ We thought it was a pipe dream at first but we’re going for it,” said coach Terri Spencer. Spencer reached out to the tournament organizers, and reserved their spot. The tournament has 50 teams per age group, on average, in years when Covid isn’t a factor. Spencer said they’re still dependant on restrictions and international travel protocols being manageable bu January, but are crossing their fingers and getting to work on raising the necessary funds in the meantime.

Heatstroke can kill your pet ! Please don’t take the risk. Heatstroke is a common veterinary emergency that can, depending on severity, lead to death. Heatstroke can cause seizures, muscle damage, brain damage, organ damage and failure, swelling of the upper airways, bleeding disorders and stomach and intestinal ulcers. Severe heat stroke can lead to costly hospitalization and some “side effects” are irreversible. Signs of heatstroke include heavy panting, raspy breathing, skin is warmer than usual, collapsing, stumbling or falling down, vomiting, salivation, bright red gums, open mouth breathing. How to avoid heatstroke: Don’t leave your pet in your vehicle, even in the shade. Run the A/C for them or leave the windows down. Take your pet for walks in early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler. Provide adequate amounts of water. If pets are left outside leave a cooling option such as a wading pool, or spray them down with cool water when possible. If you suspect heatstroke please call your veterinarian immediately!

The team is looking to raise $25,000, which would cover the cost of nine players, four coaches and managers, and all their flights, hotels, transportation, and travel insurance. The team has plans to host different fundraisers throughout the next seven months, and kicked things off with the Travelling Toilet on May 16. It’s a bright red toilet that gets moved from business to business, or home to home, depending on how much money the current tenant wants to pay to have it moved. As of May 28, the fundraiser brought in $1,700. The toilet started out at Mayor Dale Bumstead’s house, before winding up at various car dealerships, restaurants, and shops. In addition to an ongoing bottle drive and picking up garbage for the city, the next plan for the team is a one hour sales challenge, June 8. The players will be challenged to see how much beef jerky they can sell over the phone. The girls have a long ways to go, but are committed and excited about the opportunity. sports@ahnfsj.ca

Anne Callison,
born December 15, 1921, in Velyki Hlibovychi, near Lviv, Ukraine (then part of Poland), passed away in her sleep, 99 years and 5 months later, on May 30, 2021, in Fort St. John, B.C. Anne had received exceptional care at the North Peace Villa, the extended care home where she lived with advancing dementia until her passing, after receiving the last rights of her Roman Catholic faith, which was central to her life and to that of her parents, Tom Grendys and Anastasia Grendys (nee Hamulyak). The Grendys family — Anne, her sister Mary, and brothers John, Leo, Alex, and Joe – emigrated to Canada, arriving in Halifax on June 1, 1929 and settling on a farm near Huallen, west of Grande Prairie, Alberta. In January 1943, Anne took a job in Fort Nelson at George’s General Store and Café, which served fur trappers, Indigenous and non-Indigenous people, and the US Army, who were building and maintaining the Alaska Highway. Anne met John Callison in the spring of 1944 when he arrived to sell his winter fur at the store. They married in Edmonton on July 10, 1944. Anne is survived by her three sons: Adley, Wayne and Darcey. Anne raised Adley and Wayne (born 1945 and 1946) on John’s Kledo River trapline for six years, north of Fort Nelson, B.C., until they moved to Dawson Creek, where they built a motel in 1951. Darcey was born in Dawson Creek 2 years later. After 20 years in Dawson Creek, their children grown, Anne and John moved to Fort St. John so John could be close to their Murdale farm. Adley and his first wife, Carol, raised two of Anne’s grandsons, Clinton and Dustin, in Fort St. John. Clinton and his wife Cheryl gave Anne a great-granddaughter, Peyten. Granddaughter Isobel was born to Adley and his second wife, Shannon, in 2011; living at the Murdale farm close to Anne, they were a precious presence to her up to her last day. Wayne and his wife Andrea raised four of Anne’s grandchildren: Dorian, Justin, Aiden and Haleigh, in Smithers, B.C. Justin and wife Krista, of Vancouver, gave Anne two great-grandsons, Emmett and Dylan. Aiden and husband Jason, also of Vancouver, gave Anne another greatgrandson, Oliver. Anne was a member of the CWL for most of her married life, in Dawson Creek and in Fort St. John. In 1985 and 1987 she was President of the CWL in Fort St. John, and she remained active as long as she was able. Anne also worked in and managed the Fort St. John Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Store for many years. At the age of 99+, Anne survived all of her five siblings and their spouses, and all of her husband John’s immediate family of 8 siblings and their spouses. She is survived by three children of our Grandfather Fred Callison’s second marriage in 1959 to Ethel Quock of the Tahltan Nation in B.C.: Dempsey, Anne, and Jerry Callison. As you can imagine, there are 75+ nieces and nephews from her Grendys and Callison siblings who called her Auntie Anne and were always welcomed by, and attentive to, their Peace River Matriarch. In 2018, Anne’s sister’s daughter Erín Moure very generously and graciously authored a book, “A Century in the North Peace,” on the lives of her aunt and uncle Anne and John, fulfilling Anne’s last life wish. It is a treasure to us all. Funeral Mass and Memorial will be held in July 2021, Covid permitting. Condolences may be forwarded through www.hamresfuneral.com

1105 Obituaries Vivian Friesen (nee Vavra) April 12, 1932 – May 28, 2021
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Vivian Victoria (Vavra) Friesen on May 28, 2021, at the age of 89 years. Vivian was predeceased by her husband Don, parents John and Anna Vavra, sisters Mary, Marion, Theresa, Evelyn, brothers Frederick, and John, and many aunts and uncles. She is survived by her sons, Dallas (Sharon), Darcy (Carrie), and daughters Jae (Neil) and Allyson (Ken); grandchildren Jaron, Caverly, Alana, Drew, Ian, and Sam; her siblings Ann Romanoski, Bill Vavra, Veronica Orton-Johnson, and Barbara Fletcher; aunt Elizabeth Hardy; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. Vivian was a first generation Canadian, born the sixth child of eleven to Czechoslovakian (Hungarian) immigrants. Her family homesteaded a farm near Outlook, Saskatchewan, on the South Saskatchewan River Valley. It continues to be a treasured family gathering place, and the farm and river valley were one of Vivian’s favourite places. Vivian left public school at 16 to support her family, and eventually, work took her to Saskatoon. She stayed with her Aunt Mary and Uncle Jimmy Girgulis and worked at their restaurant, the Elite. Her eldest sister, Theresa, encouraged her to take a commercial course and she landed a job at Dunn & Bradstreet as the Office Manager. It was during this time she met a mercantile reporter named Don. The couple was married in Saskatoon in 1956. Soon after, Don began his lifelong career in Municipal Administration, working, living, and growing their family in Mayfair, Hafford, Luseland, and Hudson Bay. Vivian often worked alongside Don, supporting with administration duties, and it was also in these rural Saskatchewan towns, where Vivian honed her cooking skills in delectable cultural dishes, such as halupki, pierogi, and numerous soups and baking. The family moved to Dawson Creek in 1973, when Don accepted the position as City Clerk. The move to Dawson Creek afforded Vivian the opportunity to work outside the home and she flourished in a variety of positions with School District 59, most notably as payroll clerk. She revelled in the meticulous work and was appreciated by many new teachers for providing important benefits and payroll tips. Vivian retired in 1997. It was no coincidence that Vivian’s work supported education; she was a voracious supporter of higher education and taking courses to better oneself. Nearly 40 years after leaving high school, and after helping her own children graduate from high school, university, and other post-secondary endeavors, Vivian went back to school to attain her GED. This is a prime example of Vivian’s perseverance and tenacity that she demonstrated throughout her life. Vivian also held many volunteer positions for several organizations in Dawson Creek including board member of the Peace Country Highland Dancing Association, Dawson Creek Public Library, Camp Emile, and was a trustee for Notre Dame School. Most dear to her heart were her roles with the Dawson Creek Hospital Auxiliary, and as a faithful member of the Notre Dame Catholic Church. Many will remember her singing in the choir and supporting the Seniors’ Lunch through the Catholic Women’s League. Vivian was a strong advocate for volunteering your time, especially to someone or something, with no promise of personal gain, just in the spirit of lending a helping hand. Vivian had a deep love and commitment of family. She was enormously proud of her four children and deeply devoted to her six grandchildren. She loved nothing more than to share in their latest activities or accomplishments. She loved her friends and cherished her time travelling, singing, camping, and going out for meals and drives; she loved any opportunity for an adventure, a story, and a cheeky joke. Vivian’s life took a sudden and surprising turn in late January 2021, when she was diagnosed with advanced stage pancreatic cancer. She battled with grace, kindness, and gratitude to the very end. More than ever, she inspired the power of prayer, the power of thought, and the power of feeling for someone other than yourself. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Funeral services at the Notre Dame Church will be limited to family only due to current Provincial Health Order restrictions. Interment to take place at the Brookside Cemetery in Dawson Creek, BC. Vivian’s family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Daniel Botha Sr., and the staff at Rotary Manor, Dawson Creek & District Hospital, and the Grande Prairie Queen Elizabeth II Hospital for their professional care and personal compassion. For friends so wishing, donations in Vivian’s memory may be made to the Notre Dame Catholic Church, 908 104 Avenue, Dawson Creek, British Columbia, V1G 2H7 or the Dawson Creek & District Hospital Auxiliary, 11100 - 13 Street, Dawson Creek, BC, V1G 3W8. Very Respectfully, Reynars Funeral Home & Crematorium

Betty Finkle
April 29, 1933 - May 30, 2021 Betty Magusin was the first child of Tomas and Etela Magusin who was born in Canada. The Magusin family came to Canada from Slovakia to live a pioneering life in Farmington. Betty grew up in a large family with six siblings: Joseph (Julie), Thomas, Teresa (Art), Peter (Margaret), Etela (Bill), and Annie. In 1959 Betty married Charlie Finkle during a double wedding with her sister Etela and Bill Strasky. Miraculously, they had their first children on the same day the following year. Betty and Charlie would go on to have seven children: Catherine (Kevin Gilbertson), Rosemary (Frazer McKenzie), Mike (Pat), Pauline (Marlin Weninger), Mark, Carol (Ed Pardell), and Josette (Kevin Genest). Betty had 15 grandchildren: Karyl (Jenna), Shauna (Brent Wizinsky), Robyn (Chad MacDonald), Jaclyn (Adrian), Kieran (Jenny), Heath (Marianita), Ryan, Charles (Keona), Sydney (Kale), Kyle (Krysia), Gillian, Shea, Michelle, Sara, and Wyatt. She also had 5 great grandchildren: Jack and Charlie, Elizabeth, Christopher, and Thomas. She had 16 nieces and nephews, all of whom were important to her, along with her cousin, John’s children. Donna Lyste, family friend and lifelong neighbour, was also considered part of the family. Betty grew up on a homestead speaking Slovak and when she went to school she was held back a year due to insufficient English. However, Betty was a voracious learner and developed a lifelong passion for English, later completing two grades at once to return to her age appropriate grade. Learning in a one-room school gave Betty the opportunity to assist younger students with their studies once she had finished her own, an early indication of her vocation for teaching. Pursuing higher education, Betty attended Notre Dame Boarding School in Dawson Creek. She continued her education, attending Vancouver Normal School, UBC, and UVic to become a fully qualified teacher. She began teaching in the one-room school at Sunrise Valley and finished her full-time teaching career at Notre Dame School. When Betty had children, she made the decision to focus on her family as a full-time mother, returning to teaching as a substitute after Josette became a toddler. Betty was an active member of the CWL (Catholic Women’s League) most of her life. In her sixties, she became dedicated to exercising every day either at the gym or outdoors, doing so until the pandemic. She loved to write and journaled every day, a practice she started as a young adult. She completed multiple family histories as well as a novel and several books of poetry. She played cards and enjoyed many years of bridge with family and later friends at the seniors’ hall. Scrabble was another game she loved to play regularly, particularly with certain family members. Betty planted a garden every year and tended to a small jungle of house plants; she got a lot of enjoyment from her flowers. Betty also loved going to ‘the farm’ which she and Charlie had bought from her parents. Family often gathered around the fire pit for wiener roasts and talk. Betty was able to live the life she loved which was all about family and she took up the matriarchal role from her mother. Betty provided love and support to all her family, who always knew they were welcome at her home; this love and support was also extended to the larger clan of her brothers, sisters, cousins, nieces and nephews. As well as keeping up with her large immediate family, Betty also communicated with her big extended family, including her cousins abroad and Charlie’s family out east. Inspired by unwavering faith, which she considered a gift she had been given by God, Betty’s actions set an example for her family to aspire to. Her large family relied on her regularly to provide prayer, guidance, connection, and information. In her final days she was cared for by her sister, children, and grandchildren, in the house she and Charlie built. She will be dearly missed. Betty was pre-deceased by her husband Charlie (1994), her daughter Catherine (2016), her parents, Etela and Tom, her siblings, Joseph, Thomas, Teresa and her husband Art, and Etela and her husband Bill. Due to COVID restrictions, a private family funeral service will be held on Friday, June 11, 2021 at 11am with a livestream from the Reynars website for those not able to attend. To view the livestream, go to Betty’s memorial page on Reynars.com and the video will be below the obituary. For friends so wishing, donations may be made in memory of Betty to the Dawson Creek Senior Citizen’s Hall, 1101 McKellar Ave, Dawson Creek, BC, V1G 2S2. Very Respectfully, Reynars Funeral Home & Crematorium

Free wildfire assessments being offered for rural residents Many people in the Peace River Regional District live in the wildland/urban interface – the areas where forest and grassland are interspersed with homes and buildings. The risk of loss of life and property from wildfire in those areas can be very high, especially with the threat of wildfire in BC increasing each year.
Wildifres happening earlier and lasting longer in the Peace region. The PRRD is rolling out a regional FireSmart program that will help identify high-risk properties and neighbourhoods and help the people in them understand and reduce the risk of damage or loss from wildfire. Residents are encouraged to book a free and confidential property assessment conducted by local wildfire experts at Mammoth Forestry Ltd. Homeowners will receive practical advice and simple steps to drastically reduce fire risk to their property during the assessment, helping to ensure that their home is left standing in the event of a wildfire. To book an assessment scan the QR code above, visit prrd.bc.ca/firesmart or call 250-784-1855.
