“When they called two years ago and let us know our business cases was a viable thing – we were over the moon. Then a couple months later – pandemic and COVID-19 postponed that,” says Dawson Creek Mayor Dale Bumstead to the Mirror today. South Peace MLA Mike Bernier agrees. “Any time a business expresses interest in Dawson Creek it is encouraging - now it is up to Dawson Creek to use it,” he said to the Mirror today.

WOLVERINE MINE - EXPANSION TO HERMANN DISTURBANCE AREA MINES ACT AND ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT ACT PERMIT AMENDMENT APPLICATION Conuma Resources Ltd (Box 2140, Tumbler Ridge, BC V0C 2W0) is seeking to amend provincial authorizations pursuant to the Mines Act and Environmental Management Act for expansion of the existing Wolverine Mine to include the Hermann Disturbance Area (HDA). The HDA encompasses a proposed open pit mine located approximately 16 km from the Wolverine Mine’s Perry Creek Pit and Coal Processing Plant, with a Life of Mine of 7 years. The expansion, referred to as the Wolverine-Hermann Amendment Project (the Project), will function as a satellite pit and infrastructure to the Wolverine Mine. The Major Mines Office (MMO) of the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation is leading a coordinated authorizations review for the Project on behalf of the Ministries of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation and Environment and Climate Change Strategy, and is currently inviting public comments about the Project related to the following authorizations: Authorization: Mines Act Permit C-223 Amendment Authorization: Environmental Management Act Permits PA-17759 and PE-17756 Amendments. The Project has the potential to produce up to 9 million tonnes of metallurgical coal for sale in the export market at a production rate of up to approximately 1.6 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa). The HDA has a footprint of approximately 680 ha. Project components within the HDA include the Hermann Pit, waste rock dumps, soil stockpiles, run of mine stockpiles and truck load out, diesel generated power, water supply, water management system (clean water diversions, contact water collection ditches and water treatment infrastructure), office, dry and shop facilities, fuel storage, explosives facilities. Run of mine coal will be transported along the existing 26 km haul road between the Hermann Pit and the exiting Perry Creek Coal Processing Plant where it will be processed. Tailings will be stored within the existing Wolverine Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) and, once the TSF is full, in the mined-out Perry Creek Pit. Coarse coal rejects will be stored in the mined-out Perry Creek Pit. The amendment application contains a detailed reclamation and closure program, including plans for progressive reclamation. The land upon which the discharges will occur on is Conuma Resources Ltd. Coal Licenses 417485, 383180, 383181, 383182, 383183, 417327. The land is located in PNG Grid 093P03, Block B, Units 31, 32, 33, 21, within NTS map sheet 93P/03, and centered at 55.006012 N 121.153151 W. An amendment to effluent discharge permit PE-17756, issued July 25, 2006, amended December 12, 2016, which authorizes the discharge of effluent from the Wolverine Mine, will be required to discharge effluent from the HDA. The amendment proposes to treat contact water prior to discharge into M20 Creek via sedimentation ponds, ultra-filtration, reverse osmosis, SeHAWK bioreactors, polishing pond, aeration pond, and a Pilot BCR Pond. The discharge location is proposed to be located at 55.01763 N, 121.14055 W. The maximum rate of effluent discharged from the HDA will be 25,100 m3/d. The effluent from the HDA will be discharged to M20 Creek. Effluent discharge is proposed to occur 24 hours/day, 275 days/year, with some variation depending on precipitation and runoff events. Discharge will not occur from January to March. Proposed contaminant concentrations are as follows: pH 6-9.5; Total Suspended Solids (TSS) <35mg/L monthly average, <50mg/L grab sample; selenium 0.01 mg/L; Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) <10mg/L; Dissolved Oxygen (DO) >5mg/L. Measures to mitigate environmental impacts are provided in management plans, including a Selenium Management Plan, Metal Leaching/Acid Rock Drainage Management Plan, Water Management Plan, and Erosion and Sediment Control Management Plan. Monitoring of the receiving environment is proposed to include continuous flow, temperature, turbidity, conductivity, and dissolved oxygen monitoring, monthly monitoring for some anions, nutrients and metals, and quarterly monitoring for rainbow trout toxicity. An amendment to air discharge permit PA-17759, issued August 15, 2005 and last amended December 12, 2016, which authorizes the discharge of air emissions from the Wolverine Mine, will be required. The amendment application requests authorization to discharge air contaminants, in particular fugitive dust emissions, from the HDA. Continuous monitoring for the following thresholds is proposed: PM2.5 – 25ug/m3 for 24 hour average, 8ug/m3 for annual average; PM10 – 50 ug/m3 for 24 hour average. Measures to mitigate environmental impact are provided in the Fugitive Dust Management Plan. The Amateur Gardener: It really is rewarding Dillon Giancola Gardening and Gaming Reporter Something I heard a lot when I was just getting into gardening (and when I was feeling discouraged after a rough May) was, “hang in there, gardening is so rewarding.” While I understood the sentiment, I never gave it much thought because my primary reason for growing a garden wasn’t to feel good, it was to pick my own produce to eat throughout the summer. There’s nothing I love more in the summer than making fresh salads everyday and experimenting with homemade dressings, and that experience is improved when it’s made from produce I didn’t buy at the store. Still, I’m aware I also got into gardening because it seemed like a challenge, it seemed like something that a dude like me would fail miserably at, and I wanted to give it a go and see if I can learn a new skill. Well, it turns out that the old sayings are popular for a reason — gardening really does feel good, and it’s certainly rewarding. First of all, I’m having a lot of success with my garden this year, despite my doubts. I’ve already picked and eaten five zucchini, I have ate at least six bunches of chard, and I have the promise of endless amounts of tomatoes, potatoes, lettuce, and peas to look forward to soon.

Below - DG is going chard.

Routine dental care is essential to your horse’s health. Coming into fall and winter, when feed utilization is essential for maintaining weight and body temperature in our cold climate, your horse’s dental health is important to consider. Periodic examinations and regular maintenance, such as floating, are especially necessary today for a number of reasons. A) We have modified the horse’s diet and eating patterns through domestication and confinement. B) We demand more from our performance horses, beginning at a younger age, than ever before. C) We often select breeding animals without regard to genetic dental considerations. More advanced dental problems may require x-rays or extractions, and can require more than one visit to the clinic to correct. However, proper dental care has its rewards. Your horse will be more comfortable, will utilize feed more efficiently, perform better, and even live longer. FLOATING & PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE An oral examination should be an essential part of an annual physical examination by a veterinarian. Sedation is required to do a thorough oral exam, especially of teeth and soft tissues near the back of the mouth. Every dental exam provides the opportunity to perform routine preventative dental maintenance, and address issues early. Adult teeth continuously erupt throughout life and are worn down by chewing. Because the horse’s lower jaw is narrow, the lower rows of cheek teeth are closer together than the upper rows of cheek teeth. Due to this anatomy, the horse chews with a sideways motion that causes

Is Fido afraid of thunder? Thunderstorm phobia (or fear of thunder storms) can occur in dogs at any age and in any breed of dog. Dogs with phobia show signs of anxiety during storms such as whining, shaking, hiding, urinating or defecating in the house, pacing, panting and sometimes destructive behavior. There are a few things you can try to help alleviate their anxiety. 

minimize their exposure to the noise and lights of the storm by putting them in a darkened room with the blinds closed or a sound proof area. White noise can help. Make sure they are in a place where they can’t run away and get hurt.

It can be helpful to provide some distraction such as a treat dispensing toy like a kong with frozen peanut butter inside, a chew toy or playing with them.

Special shirts called Thundershirts can help relax your pet as well by providing gentle steady pressure that eases anxiety.

Dog Appeasing Pheromone (DAP) can also have a calming effect and is available as a spray or diffuser. This is available in stock in our clinic.

In some situations there are medications that can help with anxiety in your pet. Talk to your veterinarian for more information!

damage and ulceration of the cheeks and tongue. It is common for horse’s teeth to become excessively long or to wear unevenly. Routine examination and correction is especially important in horses that are missing teeth or whose teeth are wearing improperly. For example, if the cheek teeth are out of alignment, hooks can form. If the horse is missing a tooth, the opposing tooth can grow too long. Untreated, these hooks and overgrown teeth can become long or sharp enough to cut into the gums every time the horse chews or is ridden. Over time, this can cause infection and extreme pain. Teeth like this may require several treatments spread out over months to slowly reduce the overgrowth without causing damage to the nerves inside each tooth. THE AGE FACTOR - The age of a horse affects the degree of attention and frequency of dental care required. Consider these points: Foals should be examined when young to assess for congenital dental defects. Horses aged 2-5 have a lot of changes happening in their mouths during this time as caps are shed and adult teeth erupt. In total, 24 teeth are lost and between 36-40 adult teeth erupt! Dental checks every 6-12 months during these years help identify any teeth that are coming in abnormally, and facilitate treating abnormalities before the balance of the whole mouth is affected. To ensure there are no sources of pain that will impact their future training, sharp points, retained caps (baby teeth) and wolf teeth can all be addressed at this time. Mature horses should have dental exams annually to address sharp points before painful ulcers develop. Some horses have well balanced mouths and do well with floats every couple years, whereas most do best with annual floats. With dental imbalances, dental floats every 6mo is appropriate. It is much better to address minor imbalances early, as once a horse advances into their later teenage years the constant eruption of teeth slows down and some issues cannot be rectified. There is a finite amount of tooth to work with, and skipping early dental maintenance causes horses to be more likely to struggle with tooth loss and inability to maintain condition much earlier in their life than necessary. Senior and geriatric horses need extra care as they are more likely to suffer from periodontal disease, which is very painful and can cause severe infections and tooth loss if not treated. As teeth wear down and stop growing, the roots become short and teeth may become mobile. It is important to extract mobile teeth as chewing with a wiggly tooth hurts. Regular floats are also important to look after imbalances and maintain as much functional grinding surface as possiblewithout grinding surface, the horse is unable to correctly chew hay and grass, and will need to be fed softened seniors diets in order to maintain weight. With routine care, horses can maintain functional teeth well into their 30s, whereas horses with poorly maintained mouths often begin to struggle in their early 20s (or even earlier!) In closing, as winter approaches it is time to consider when your horse’s teeth were last checked. If they may be in need of dental care it is best to do so before the cold hits to help ensure your equine companions stay comfortable and warm throughout the year.

A Groundbirch 4H fun day

The rainy weather didn’t dampen the efforts of the Groundbirch 4-H Multi Club this past weekend as they hosted their family fun day and animal show and sale at the Kiskatinaw Fall Fairgrounds. The club of 21 members came together with ideas and enthusiasm to put on the afternoon and evening that included activities such as a bouncy castle, dart games, petting zoo, a dunk tank, a mini market, as well as their annual animal show and sale. They wrapped up the event with a community BBQ sponsored by Secure Energy and Family dance DJ’d by DCDJ. They’d also like to thank all those that supported our club through our raffle draw. The winners were as follows: Side of Beef – Dana Bergen, Butchered Hog – Matt Roberson, Hutterite Turkey – Bruce Bueckert, Outdoor Wood Cooler – Bonnie Lytle. The club would like to recognize that none of this would’ve been possible without the hardwork of the members and their CLINIC families or the support of The Peace Since 1971 our gene rous community. The club will resume again in the fall for another year of “Learning to do by doing”.
