Out of the saddle after 22 years as horse club president more new people get involved and come into the club,” Cousins said. Initially Cousins thought she would only be the president for a year.

Cousins has brought that selfless mentality to the club in the two decades she’s been involved. Along the way she’s left a big impact on countless horse riders, students and volunteers, and left a legacy that will be unmatched. “I’ve never seen such a passionate, dedicated, and generous person in my life. She gave so much and has been very selfless — that has to be her legacy,” said Valerie Loiselle, who’s seen Cousins lead the club since the beginning.

The Mirror and other media were contacted throughout the week noting workers were set to walkout in protest of vaccination requirements of front line and nursing staff.

“Tomorrow there will be a large group of staff from Dawson Creek not only Rotary Manor in regards to freedom of choice to be vaccinated,” said one woman claiming to be a nurse at the Rotary Long Term Care in Dawson Creek.

A short procession of cars moved through the parking lot of the Manor at about 1:15pm, while a brief chant of ‘My body, my choice!” erupted at 1:30pm, and some more horns at 1:45pm before a closer to the facility

NICHOLS: the long and short of it Merlin Nichols Columnist Once upon a time there was a wise man called Solomon, a king, and very rich indeed, who gave us many proverbs long and short. As Solomon the wise advises us: whatever your hand finds to do, put into doing it your energy your thought your vision your passion, because where you are headed and going fast there is no “work or device or knowledge or wisdom” (Ecclesiastes 9:10). What? Nothing? I’m just reporting the gist of the wise man’s words as I read them. I’m not responsible for what they say! I’m not irresponsible either; I would be if I failed to share them with you. You might question why a guy like me would choose to muse about death. I would respond, “Why not?” It seems that a destination to which all of humanity appear to be headed should receive a little publicity while brain function lasts. We have been terrorized these last 18 or so months. Governments the world around with the zealous and effective help of the main-stream media have been putting energy and passion, if not a lot of thought and vision into scaring the hell out of us with the fear of death by covid. All the time not pausing to reflect that this thing commonly thought to be hell does not exist – at least I can find no evidence for its existence. It’s got to be a fabricated tale of an imaginary destination reserved for the bad to generate fear and compliance. Seems like some things never change! Our governments have learned and practiced their Thomas Hobbes (control by fear) very well indeed. Chronic fear produces compliance like nothing else can do. But what do we have to fear? Fear itself is our greatest enemy. Fear strangles our minds, blockades our ambitions, stifles our drive, thwarts the achievement of our fondest hopes, and potentially can prevent entry into God’s eternal kingdom of love. And the world has lived a year and a half in the nest of fear. What can possibly hatch from such a nest? Except more fear? So life is short, like a squirrel’s life and death is long, really, really long but n ot as funny. We and the squirrel will go to the same place when death knocks. Is that so? How can it be? Indeed. Made from the same elements of the

earth, without life we simply return to earth: molecules of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, magnesium, and other elements, indistinguishable from those of the oncechattering squirrel. Unless... Yes, there is an alternative to living in fear. It’s called living with trust and hope. “But,” you protest, “you don’t give me anything to hope for or in. Returning to the dust like a chattering squirrel! Where’s the focus of hope?” Granted. I can’t cut off the essay here. That would leave me looking like Richard Dawkins or one of his disciples. No, Richard and I are on entirely different wavelengths. He is proud to bill himself as a materialist, an atheist, a god denier. He’s written multiple books to support his position and convince the public who might be sitting on the fence – weak and unconvincing arguments to be sure, but popular nevertheless. I, on the other hand, am not a materialist. I believe in a Creator who takes a personal interest in the affairs of each individual on earth. As Creator, He has given each of us free will, the ability to choose whom we will serve – and there are only two options, not more. You will believe in a Creator who cares about you, or not. There’s no third option. “Still you haven’t fixed the problem of being like the dead squirrel when I die. Where’s the reason not to fear death?” Good point. Our Creator keeps a record of our DNA and has a wake-up time planned for all who have put their trust in the Creator, who is really Jesus Christ; a wakeup call for all who have died from covid or cancer or bubonic plague or hunger or government brutality or from tired old age – it really doesn’t matter. We will hear His voice and come out of the graves alive in the vitality of immortal youth to live forever – as real, flesh-andbone human beings – not as vague, ghostly spirits riding a cloud. That’s what the Book says, not Dawkins’ book, but the Good Book. We have only two options, not three. We can believe Dawkins’ hopeless case, or the only other option, the Creator who cares for us. What happens to fear when you put your trust in the Creator? It goes. The governments with the help of the popular media have worked to create a climate of fear that reduces us to compliant toadies. Don’t let it happen to you. Live in the peace that your Creator freely gives you. That’s the long and short of it.

Climb for Alzheimer’s invites Peace region residents to raise funds to support people living with dementia The circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with extreme heat and fires throughout much of the province, have posed uphill challenges for all of us. But they have taken an extra toll on people affected by dementia, who have experienced isolation and uncertainty as well as a loss of many services. In many cases, these isolating conditions can contribute to cognitive decline. Committed to continuing to deliver supports for people living with dementia during this time, the Alzheimer Society of B.C. is launching its fall fundraiser, the Climb for Alzheimer’s. The annual event, now in its 10th year, raises awareness and funds to support critical programs and services that help Peace Region and other B.C. residents. As part of the September 1 - 21 Climb, Dawson Creek, Fort St. John, Chetwynd, Hudson’s Hope, Tumbler Ridge and other Peace Region residents are invited to hike local trails. “Now more than ever, we are pulling out all the stops to make sure British Columbians affected by dementia are able to access the support they need. We continue to adapt our programming to a virtual setting, so it is accessible, no matter where you are in the province,” says Jen Lyle, the Alzheimer Society of B.C.’s Chief Executive Officer. “The majority of our funding comes from the generosity of the community: committed individuals and organizations who support us through events such as the Climb for Alzheimer’s.” Supporters include Neptune Terminals, a long-term sponsor of this annual event. “Dementia touches so many people. Often you won’t even know your employees are dealing with it in their families,” says Lisa Dooling, Neptune’s Director of Community & Stakeholder Engagement. Participants can register as individuals or as a team and are encouraged to share their hiking and climbing challenges online. To register or make a donation to the event, visit climbforalzheimers.ca. For questions about dementia or memory loss, or to connect to the Alzheimer Society of B.C.’s programs and services, call the First Link® Dementia Helpline at 1-800936-6033. The Helpline is available Monday to Friday, 9 am to 8 pm. editor@dcdn.ca

The Exploring Art Group says they’re are happy to accept new members starting Sept. 8. “We’re looking forward to having our 30 members return, and hopefully some new people,” she said. “I think everyone’s excited to get back into a bit of a routine, as long as our provincial health officer makes it a doable thing,” said President Janet Loiselle. The group was created by local artist and community activist Edna McPhail, a member of the South Peace Art Society since 1956, and has been running ever since. Every spring the Dawson Creek Art Gallery hosts the group’s annual art show.

During their downtime, the group secured a $1,000 grant in June, which will be used to host painting workshops and more. “We’re looking at opportunities to partner with other groups for space use, if they want to come in and do a workshop, we won’t turn that down.” The studio itself is set up at the aviation building at Northern Lights College, with weekly dates still to be determined, added Loiselle. Junior Canucks season follows hockey school, training camp The Dawson Creek Junior Canucks are ready for the puck to drop on their 2021-22 season. The team started their year with the Canucks Hockey School, August 23 to 27, in Tumbler Ridge. The team’s first school since 2019 was a popular place to be despite the location, with 70 kids skating with 16 Canucks players, in addition to coaches and staff. “Kids camp was amazing. Tumbler Ridge was awesome again, the kids had a blast as did our guys, it was really successful,” said Canucks GM and Head Coach Colby Wagar. Lunch was supplied throughout the week thanks to Evergreen Resources and Celtic Construction. The team rolled right from the hockey school into Canucks training camp that weekend, August 27 to 29.

“Our main camp went really well, I recruited quite a few players, plus 10 returnees. We had 28 kids at camp, including seven goalies battling for two spots,” Wagar said. From there, the team will begin practices at the Memorial Arena, starting September 6, leading up to their season opener, at home against the Fort St. John Huskies, September 24. Wagar said he’s comfortable with the players he has right now. “We’ll have a completely new look to the team this year. It won’t be run and gun, but a heavy set, tenacious, tough and fast team.” The Canucks will be revealing a full rebrand before the start of the season, including new colours and jerseys, giving the team a fresh

DC volleyball team surpasses 25K fundraising goal for Hawaii trip

Chocolate dessert with a healthy twist

Quite often people hear the word “dessert” and immediately think of a calorie- and fat-laden decadence that may set them back several hours on the treadmill. While it is true that some desserts can pack a heavy punch, others need not make people fear for their waistlines. Desserts that feature healthy ingredients can tempt your sweet tooth and provide nutritional benefits. Such is the case when combining pomegranate and dark chocolate, two ingredients that are rich in antioxidants that can contribute to a healthier immune system. “Chocolate Covered Pomegranate Clusters” can be served as the culmination of a fancy dinner in decorative martini glasses, or taken along as a healthy trail mix of sorts in school or work lunch boxes. Enjoy this recipe, courtesy of John La Puma, M.D., ChefMD. At only 108 calories per serving, this dessert likely won’t compromise any meal plans.

Chocolate Covered Pomegranate Clusters Servings: 4

1 cup (8 ounces) pomegranate arils 2⁄3 cup (4 ounces) organic bittersweet chocolate chips, such as Ghirardelli 60% 1⁄4 teaspoon turmeric 1⁄8 teaspoon black pepper 1⁄4 cup fresh basil, stemmed and julienned

After four months of endless fundraising events and work bees, the Dawson Creek Volleyball Club’s U15 team has met and exceeded its fundraising goal for its proposed trip to Hawaii in January. The goal was to raise $25,000 by January, but head coach Terri Spencer said the girls exceeded the goal by quite a bit, without giving the exact total. “The girls worked their butts off and we’re super proud of them. Being that they worked all summer, I was a bit concerned about how they would feel about their summer, but my daughter Arielle said it was the best summer of her life,” Spencer said. “She got to spend a lot of time with her friends and teammates, hanging out, going to lunches, having sleepovers, and working together.”

Set the pomegranate arils on paper towels to absorb any excess moisture. Melt chocolate chips in a heavy-bottomed small saucepan over low-to-medium heat, stirring frequently, 2 to 3 minutes. Remove saucepan from the burner. Add pomegranate seeds and stir in spices. Use a fork to scoop out small chocolate-covered clusters, and place each on a wax paper-lined plate. Garnish with mint. Refrigerate until chocolate is firm, about 15 minutes. PC218207

The team started out in May with the “travelling toilet” fundraiser, and a jerky sale in June. Since then, the girls held a garage sale which 60 families donated items to —”the biggest garage sale I’ve ever seen in my life,” Spencer said — cleanup during the Dawson Creek Exhibition, as well as many jobs for community members such as painting and deck staining that were auctioned of.

“People in the community were constantly reaching out and giving us lots to do and it really paid off. It was definitely exhausting, but it’s done now,” Spencer said, adding that there were a couple jobs that still needed to be done that were auctioned off.

Volleyball Championships in January. However, the recent announcements by the provincial government requiring Covid vaccines to board planes, as well as other restrictions, may cause the team to delay or alter their plans. “We will have contingencies in place depending on the vaccine. We may have to postpone the trip in January, and decide if we wait a year, or we go to a different tournament or change our plans altogether. Either way, the funding will carry forward and will end up paying for the trip of a lifetime,” Spencer said. She said the whole coaching staff and all the players are moving forward next year as a group, so the money will be used on the group involved in the fundraising regardless of when. “We are trying to respect everyone’s feelings about the vaccine. No player gets left behind, and we’ll see how things play out this fall. The goal is still to go in January, but if not we’ll carry forward from there.” Spencer said the summer has had an undeniable impact on the team besides the financial one. “I’ve coached for 13 years, and this is definitely the closest team I’ve coached. They all get along really well, they hang out all the time, and have a blast together. They bonded all summer and it will pay off on the court for sure.” Email sports reporter Dillon Giancola at sports@ahnfsj.ca

Peace Auto Fest hits new heights in third year The Peace Auto Fest returned to the Taylor chainup area for a third time last weekend, August 28 and 29, and this time, there were no storms and few Covid restrictions to impact it. This year’s festival, put on by Fort St. John Car Culture and the Peace Region Motorsports Association, took things up a notch in all regards — from the amount of people attending, to the amount of events taking place, and even the number of cars participating in the car show.

dollars on these cars and there’s a lot that goes into it. Today here, we did it on a budget, and wanted to show that it’s fun, and it’s active in Canada,” Townsend said. “I feel like everyone here has room for improvement, including myself, but everyone who showed up is giving 100 percent of their effort.” Email sports reporter Dillon Giancola at sports@ ahnfsj.ca

“This year compared to last year, it’s incredible how much it’s grown. We have a great amount of cars here this year, and there are new faces from all over — Dawson Creek, Grande Prairie,” Nathan Fougere said, while wiping down his 1994 Acura Integra in between short burst of rain. He said he was aiming to win the Best Engine Bay award in the Show N’ Shine, and he would go on to do just that. He didn’t have as much luck in the Autocross, blowing his clutch the day before but getting the car ready in time for Sunday’s show.

“It’s so much fun. It’s all about coming out here, having fun together, crashing our cars. Every year it gets bigger and bigger. For a small town, we have such an awesome car community here and I can’t even describe it,” Hansen said. Ryan Mucci, who won the 2020 event, was once again a fan favourite, wrecking nine tires, and blowing a hole in his engine block his last time out. He finished third in 2021, as well as second in the Autocross race, to go with two Show N’ Shine awards. The third PAF saw the debut of the sound competition, which saw about 10 drivers open their car doors, and crank their systems up to 11, to compete for the best system in the region. Gavon Townsend, who’s lived in Fort St. John for a year and is the president of Western Canada’s Basshead Lifestyle, enjoyed being a part of the show and is happy to bring this sport to the Peace Region. “We’re trying to bring sound competitions into the Peace Region and really build the sport here, because it is a sport, people spend hundreds of thousands of

While the Show N’ Shine had the highest turnout of cars since the Peace Auto Fest started, the drift competition was once again the star of the weekend. From 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Sunday, August 29, fans lined the West side of the Taylor Chain-Up lot to see the drivers perform their biggest drifts in the tightest of margins, while wrecking as many tires as they could along the way.

from our front - out of the saddle after 22 years as horse club president “Dawson Creek didn’t have much to do with horse clubs back then, and we formed it because we didn’t have any clinics nearby. We wanted to ride and do things as a group, a bunch of us wanted to do things together, and have clinics locally. I was travelling to Fort St. John for horse clinics at the time and thought, ‘why can’t we do something like that here?’” Loiselle said Cousins always went above and beyond to bring the sport to local riders in Dawson Creek and remove

hosting 15 clinics in Dawson Creek through the DC Horse Club.

“If kids couldn’t afford a clinic she would give them a break, she was always trying to find horses for students and find tack for them. She did what she could to make sure kid could ride,” said Loiselle.

“(Hahn) said that when he first came up here, he thought we would just be a country bumpkin type city, but said the quality of horse and rider here was exceptional, and that there were better horse riders here than Vancouver,” Cousins said, adding “We’ve always had great riders here but just didn’t have access to all the shows.”

Cousins was instrumental in bringing three-time Canadian Olympian Robin Hahn to Dawson Creek for annual clinics. The former equestrian, who died last month at age 88, ended up

“(Hahn) said he couldn’t believe the calibre of rider here, and that’s all because of the dedication of Tara Norman and Rose,” Loiselle said. Norman, the club’s trainer since 1999 until a year ago, said Cousins has been excellent as president. “She’s been the main staple of the club the entire time. Whether it was bringing in clinicians or fundraising for the club, she brought life to the club and really kept things happening,” Norman said.

“They have a lot of new, young people there, and they are going to do great. It’s sad to see people move on, but it’s nice to see Rose step on to a different phase,” Fellows said. Cousins may no longer be in her usual role, but she’ll still be involved. “I’ve stepped down but not away, my love of horses hasn’t gone anywhere. I’ve learned so much over the years, and you form a real bond with the clinicians. Whether it’s a clinician, the riders, or people who keep coming back to the clinics each year, the friendships you make just keep going. I am still riding, I still want to learn — the learning on a horse is endless, there is no end to it,” Cousins said. “I’m a tough person that likes to stay busy, I still want to do stuff but I want the younger people to get involved as well.” Email sports reporter Dillon Giancola at sports@ahnfsj.ca

At the request of the family, no service will be held. For friends so wishing, donations may be made in memory of Willy to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta & NWT, 5241 Calgary Trail NW #144, Edmonton, AB, T6H 5G8. Very Respectfully, Reynars Funeral Home & Crematorium

Chetwynd library public engagement planned for October

Residents asked to put their internet speed to the test With the abundance of rural and remote areas in the Peace region, accessing reliable and affordable internet is an issue facing many residents and business owners. The Fiber Working Group (FWG) formed by the PRRD identifies these challenges as the number one issue impeding economic growth with high-speed broadband internet becoming standard for many Canadians and day-to-day operations. The PPRD is working to identify better options for high-speed Broadband Internet accessibility in homes, businesses and public buildings. The vision is to meet all needs for health, education, and economic development now, and into the future. To help the Regional District take the next steps, the public is encouraged to take the CIRA internet speed test.

Scan the QR code to take the CIRA internet speed test! The performance data gathered from this process will help provide a sense of which areas in the PRRD need connectivity, depending on their current load speeds or lack of. To register for updates on this project please visit haveyoursay.prrd.bc.ca.

Fall Clean-up returns to the PRRD The first day of fall is just around the corner. As your greenspaces change for the season, now is a great time to tidy up those tree clippings and yard debris. The PRRD is making disposal easy for the Fall Clean-up event happening October 4 - October 17!

The PRRD will be holding a community engagement session in October on plans for a new Chetwynd Public Library. The date will be confirmed soon. Be sure to register for an account on Have Your Say to be notified of project updates or visit prrd.bc.ca.

Next PRRD Board eetings:

During this time, district landfills and waste transfer stations have extended hours and all tipping fees for yard and sorted waste are waived. Please note that commerical, business and industrial waste will not be accepted. To view a list of accepted items or to review the hours and locations, please visit the garbage and recycling page at prrd.bc.ca or call the environmental services department at 250-784-3200.
