Farming is an industry that has gone through as many changes as any other. These days, it’s thought to be the work of large farming corporations, or farming families, passed down through generations. However, the BC Land Matching Program has been working to change that in recent years. The BC Land Matching Program is operated through Young Agrarians, with funding from the Province of BC and regional funders. It’s a free program designed to match prospective farmers looking for land with land holders looking to lease their land for farming purposes. Starting in 2016 in the Metro-Vancouver and Vancouver Island areas, the Land Matching Program came to the Northern BC region in 2019, with three matches — in Pouce Coupe, Fort St. John, and Fort Nelson — to date. Mayors Mayor Allen Courtoreille and Dale Bumstead met up with Canadian prison reform advocate David Milgaard Sunday during Chetwynd’s third annual mental health walk. SUMMER

Work continues on plans to develop a regional slaughterhouse for producers in the B.C. Peace. The Small-Scale Meat Producers Association is looking to build an on-farm red-meat abattoir in the North Peace to support its members in the region, and provide a place for the initial processing of beef, pork, and sheep. The association hopes to meet and grow demand for locally-raised meat as the province launches a new licensing system making it easier for small producers to sell from their farmgate or at farmers markets, retail shops, and restaurants starting Oct. 1. “We know that this is needed in the Peace and so we’re taking this opportunity to build a solution that will help farmers and ranchers in the Peace that can also be duplicated,” said President Julia Smith. “We’re going to put money into design and solving all the problems, and making sure it meets all the regulatory requirements. That will all be open source.” Around $130,000 has gone into the project so far, which is still in the design phase, and the association is seeking a grant from BC Hydro’s Site C agricultural fund to begin building the project. This week, the Peace River Regional District’s Electoral Area Directors Committee voted to write a letter of support for the association’s funding application. In a letter to the PRRD, association board member and local rancher Michelle Schaeffer noted that a recent study found consumer

interest in local meat is increasing demand for slaughter and processing services in the B.C., but consistent supply and co-ordinating the supply value chain remain challenges. Schaeffer noted the association plans to support existing cut-and-wrap businesses in the region by limiting the project to “kill and chill” while continuing to divert meat carcasses to them for further processing. The long-term vision, however, is to build infrastructure that could include a cut-and-wrap component, she noted. “The project benefits will not be limited to the Peace; access to the plans we develop and support for others to build more units will be provided at large once we complete this initial project,” Schaeffer wrote. “Regional extension events are planned to tour the unit and provide opportunities for mock-demonstrations and trails for education and awareness purposes.” Smith added the facility could also be used for demonstrations and training. “With the new regulations, there’s a lot of people who have questions or need training. So there’s an opportunity to educate other producers and show them what’s possible, show them a humane slaughter and be a prototype demonstration,” Smith said. from our front “We have a lot of people looking for land up in the Dawson Creek and Fort St. John area. They are looking quite frequently to move here from Southern BC and Alberta, with some having farming experience and wanting to get back into it, and others who are brand new to farming,” said Morgan Kitchen, land matcher with Young Agrarians. Kitchen said she and other land matchers provide “a hands on and personalized support to facilitate inquiries and people looking for that match, finding the person who has the land available, bringing them together and going through the lease agreement.” According to Kitchen, new farmers face barriers in accessing knowledge, land, and capital. There is lots of land out there to

be farmed and used, but many land holders are still unaware of the Land Matching Program, or of how effective it can be. “Some land holders using the program may be retiring, or are just too busy, but they don’t want to see their land sit as it has great potential. They know it would be great to have someone else working on the land, and we are helping bring those two parties together,” said Kitchen. So far, the program has made 165 matches, with 16 of those (totaling 1,687.5) acres) taking place in the North Central Region, which covers a vast area from Central B.C. up to the Yukon border. Time to get smart about fire prevention

CONtACt

During the summer, 343 homes were lost to wildfire in British Columbia. This is a sobering number. Published & delivered Thursdays 901-100 Ave, • Dawson Creek, BC • V1G 1W2 Phone: (250) 782-4888 Fax: (250) 782-6300 Email: national@dcdn.ca The Mirror retains full, complete and sole copyright of any advertisement, written or photographic material published in The Mirror. Following a challenging fire season like this, reporters and governments often talk about statistics - hectares burned, properties evacuated, dollars spent, structures destroyed. But these are more than just statistics. These were homes once filled with families and memories. With the challenges of climate change, wildfire seasons are getting worse, here in British Columbia and around the world. We all need to do more than we have in the past, at every level, to address these challenges. Because this will take everyone - governments, communities and individuals - to move the needle on this ever-present threat. Our government has faced many challenges in the past four years, including the record-breaking 2017 and 2018 wildfires. But not since the floods in Grand Forks has an emergency displaced so many for so long. Our shared desire is that everyone gets to rebuild quickly. But I know from past experiences that we are only at the beginning of that process. We are also strongly supporting the efforts of local governments and First Nations to reduce wildfire risks in and around their communities by supporting the completion of fuel-management projects, the

development of Community Wildfire Resiliency Plans, and the implementation of FireSmart principles. This work is particularly important where urban development borders on grasslands and forested areas. In the summer, we saw the difference these practices can make in Logan Lake, which has been helping to write the FireSmart playbook by preparing for wildfires for nearly 20 years. This year, Fire Prevention Week is Oct. 3-9. I implore all communities in B.C. to take stock of their fire risks and what they can do to help prevent a disaster. FireSmart is backed by a vast amount of field, laboratory and modelling research. Its methods have been demonstrated time and time again to reduce the risk of losses, even under the most extreme fire conditions. The funding application deadline for 2022 projects is Friday, Oct. 8, 2021. The date for the next round of applications has not been finalized, but I encourage communities to visit the funding programs section of the UBCM website to learn more. Most importantly, individual British Columbians need to play a role in mitigating wildfire risks around their homes and properties by undertaking FireSmart initiatives. The FireSmart Begins at Home manual and more information about wildfire risk mitigation is available online: https://firesmartbc.ca/

LANGEVIN: what about divine intervention In my last article I wrote about ‘Why do bad things happen to good people?’ One may then ask, “Doesn’t God help us in our time of need?” Indeed He does, and far more often than we realize. Typically, after a near miss, a miraculous escape, an unexpected provision, we call it luck, fluke, coincidence, karma, but in the sight of the Almighty there is no such thing. He merely chooses to remain the anonymous, unrecognized, or unacknowledged Intervenor. Years ago, a young street girl told me that she never thanks people when they help her. Instead she thanks God because she knows that the help really comes from Him. I found her conviction extraordinary. The Bible says that God is the Savior of all men, especially of those that believe. Do we get rescued from everything? Not necessarily? Elisha, perhaps the second most powerful prophet next to Moses died of a sickness. All of Jesus apostles were martyred, except for John. Nevertheless Jesus said, “Ask, and you shall receive, seek, and you shall find, knock, and the door shall be open to you…” It is important to first establish a couple of facts regarding asking. 1 - God is not a big servant genie waiting to answer our every beckon and call. 2 - He will not break His laws nor violate His character in order to answer our sometimes manipulative prayers. There are occasions, however, when He overlooks our folly to be gracious, and that is why I love Jesus today. The most common way God helps us is by what I will term PETITIONED INTERVENTION. He wants us to ask! Typically when we’re in a jam, we may cry out to Him for help. Most of us have done so an untold number of times. Shamefully, that is possibly the main reason many of us pray. Furthermore, your rescue may very well have been the result of someone else’s prayer and not just yours. How is your standing with God?

Another way He helps us is by what I call Unsolicited Help. A friend recently recounted to me an incident he had. He, his wife, and young son, were caught in a fierce storm while canoeing on the Yukon’s Lake Laberge. The lake is notorious for being very dangerous. He felt certain they were goners, when all of a sudden and catching them by surprise, a large boat pulled up beside them. Two men lifted them out of the canoe and brought them safely to shore. He did not know the Lord at the time, nor did he pray. But after talking to the rescuers who recounted their perspective, and told him that it was by mere chance they spotted them, he now acknowledges that it was God that rescued them. The next way God helps us is by UNSOLICITED CARE. Jesus said that His Father makes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust. I was watching a documentary about our sun. The scientists were saying that our sun is actually very extraordinary. From what they were saying, our sun is amazingly stable

compared to other comparable stars that they observe. Apparently, typical suns like ours produce fierce solar flares about every hundred years (how they figure that I do not know) that would decimate all life on earth and rip away our delicate atmosphere. That is Unsolicited Care. There are many things in our existence here on earth that we assume and take for granted, but do not recognize, that except for God’s Sovereign Care we could quickly perish. Finally, and the most critical is the UNSOLICITED HELP that God has provided for us and our eternal souls - the sacrificial life, death, and resurrection of His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Even while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Most didn’t ask for it, nor did we even care. But God loved us so much that He Himself took the initiative. Now that is what I would call the pinnacle of DIVINE INTERVENTION. (Next PART 3, Divine Retribution)

Carbon monoxide awareness Too many people in B.C. die, or become seriously ill, because of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. While the effects of CO poisoning can be devastating, they can be prevented. The best thing to do is have all fuel-burning appliances inspected by a licensed contractor every year. You should also install a carbon monoxide alarm that signals an alert when the gas is present. If you have a broken or expired smoke or carbon monoxide alarm, replace it and drop your old one off for free at over 200 recycling locations in B.C. Learn more at productcare.org/alarms.

Awareness campaign resources November 1 to 7 is Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week in B.C. During this week, fire departments, educators, government and industry work together to teach people about the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning, the symptoms and sources, and how to avoid becoming ill. Use the digital resources below on your social media channels or website, or conduct a doorto-door Home Safety program by visiting residents and discussing prevention tips and checking for working carbon monoxide alarms.
