DC’s Armstrong named to U18 Team BC A trio of Peace Region hockey players have been named to the U18 Team BC. Dawson Creek’s Hailey Armstrong, as well as Keagan Goulet and Brooke Disher of Fort St. John will represent B.C. at the 2021 Western Regional Women’s U18 Championship in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, November 1 to 6. The U18 Team B.C. was originally set to compete in Dawson Creek at the 2021 U18 National Women’s U18 Championship, starting October 31,
but Hockey Canada cancelled the event on September 27 due to the ongoing pandemic. The three girls, along with Kasey Ditner of Fort St. John, were invited to the provincial training camp in Pitt Meadows, August 19 to 22, with hopes of representing their province in front of their hometown fans and family at the Ovintiv Event Centre. Armstrong and Goulet currently play for the Northern Capitals of the BCEHL in Prince George, while Disher plays for Rink Hockey
Academy of the CSSHL in Kelowna. Disher currently has three points in seven games for Rink. Team BC last competed at the U18 level at the 2019 Canada Winter Games, in March 2019, winning bronze. sports@ahnfsj.ca

Online open house slated to read up on new Chetwynd Public Library Book studies - on building a book building. The Chetwynd Public Library is a hub of the community, providing services and programs to residents since 1959. ver the years the library has grown in order to meet the public’s needs, and now needs replacement to continue to provide services to the residents of Chetwynd and surrounding areas. A open house is slated for those in the district to learn more. To find out more about the project, please crack the book on Zoom on November 3 from 6pm 8pm for a virtual open house. Members of the project team and library advisory committee will be set up to speak to you about the design, features, and funding for the new facility, and will be able to answer your questions. Since 2016, the District of Chetwynd, Chetwynd Public Library Board and staff, and Peace River Regional District have been working together on this project and are pleased to present it to the community The total budget for the new library is set at no more than $5 million. While up to $950,000 may come from short-term borrowing, resulting in a tax increase for the residents and businesses in Chetwynd and the surrounding rural areas, the Peace River Regional District will continue to look for grants, donations and additional partners in an effort minimize those increases.
Unreserved Public Real Estate Auction
Currently the residential tax rate for the Chetwynd Library Services Function is $0.1488 per $1,000 on land and improvements. If $950,000 is required from short-term borrowing, the tax rate is anticipated to increase to between $0.20 to $0.22 per $1,000. Short timeline 2016 - At the request of the District of Chetwynd and the Chetwynd Library Board, the Peace River Regional District started work on examining the options to either upgrade the current library or build a new library. 2017 - After the final report for the first phase of the project was concluded, the decision was made to hire an architect to complete a concept design and cost estimate for the project. 2018 - A design was completed by an architect working with the Advisory Committee. The design was to go public but was cancelled, as the committee felt the cost was too high. 2021 - A project team was hired to design and build a new facility, based on guidance from the Chetwynd Library Advisory Committee, Chetwynd Public Library Board, Library staff, Peace River Regional District, and District of Chetwynd. The virtual open house goes November 3 from 6pm - 8pm. editor@dcdn.ca

Kaempf raises $3K + for trio of charities during four by four 48 hour run event Dillon Giancola Reporter/Photographer Amy Kaempf has always dreamed of doing a David Goggins-type running challenge, four miles every four hours for 48 hours. When she injured her foot at the beginning of this year and could no longer do what she loved, Kaempf decided she would do the challenge as soon as she was able to - come rain or shine. Now three charities see the benefit after she ran 83 km in 48 hours. The Dawson Creek Seniors Hall, Nawican Bergeron Youth Centre, and Dawson Creek Public Library.
Kaempf had a tent set up at the Peace Country Toyota parking lot, and began and ended each run from there. Earlier this year she developed plantar fasciitis in her foot, which prevented her from putting any weight on her foot, let alone running. She went to the doctor right away and was told it could take up to a year to heal. She began going to physio to work on the foot, and began training at a local gym regularly, where she lost 30 pounds in a short amount of time. “The improvements I’ve seen from (Kaempf) are absolutely freaking incredible. She’s always been an avid runner, but had never been to the gym before. She came to us, we got her a personal trainer, a nutritional coach, and the changes to her routine and running are incredible, we’re super proud of her,” said gym owner Tammy Schmidt. Schmidt surprised Kaempf with a $300 donation, $100 for each of the three charities.

“It combined my passion for running, now that I can finally get back to running I want to take advantage of that, and my passion for the community. I’ve always wanted to do something where I could donate to the community, and specifically around two areas I really care about – seniors and kids.” Kaempf, a city councillor, did her challenge from October 22 to 24. Each run was four miles, or 6.4 km, and took around 40 minutes.

The bartender says to the Fact, “What can I get you?” clearly ignoring the Truth. The Truth complains to the Manager that the bartender didn’t offer Truth a drink. The Manager responds, “the Bartender didn’t see you because he doesn’t believe in you”. I have been pondering the difference for quite some time. How can multiple people look at the same situation but have vastly differing opinions on what is fact? What I have learned so far is that the difference between a fact and a truth is that a fact cannot be disputed – it is real, quantified, qualified, and measured as fact – it’s real. A truth is not the same – it is based on belief and/or an interpretation of a fact, “You believe that something is true”.
It may NOT be true, but you believe it to be true. It could be because of where you were brought up, how your parents raised you, or the external influences during critical time periods during your life. Your belief system is borne out of those influences. Is this the reason why positions vary so wildly as it relates to the pandemic or even global warming? Are so many folks skeptical of the information they receive because we (society) have conflated fact and truth? It makes my brain hurt. I went down this rabbit hole over the weekend. I broached the question to family and friends. Each of them had a different way of phrasing the response, but all said that in essence that a fact is true, but the truth is a belief or perception. They believe something to be true. Remember the viral social media post a few years ago which showed a striped dress and asked the question, “What colour do you see?”. Some people
saw black and blue, while others saw white and gold. Myself? I was adamant that it was black and blue and wondered if I was being gaslit when a coworker saw white and gold. MY truth was that the dress was black and blue and at first I argued with my co-worker about, “How can you see white and gold? It’s clearly black and blue!” Her truth was that I was incorrect – she saw white and gold. If I had found out later that the dress was in fact white and gold, I probably would have questioned the source. I would have found it difficult to believe that I was wrong because I know what I saw and to
me, I know what I believed and to me, that was the truth. As I went down that rabbit hole, I also looked up the definition of “news”. News is defined as a “newly received or noteworthy information, especially about recent or important events”. So, depending on where you get your news, i.e., traditional media (radio/ television/print), via social media sites, or a podcast will undoubtedly lead you in defining what you believe is the truth. Having said that, how do we come to terms with those who believe in a truth that differs from ours?

Pregnancy checking season is amongst us with October and November typically being our businest months, however we have seen more herds getting preg checked earlier this fall. Cows are home from summer pasture and calves are weaned or in the process of being weaned as we speak. Which leads to the question is it worth preg checking your cow herd? Before we decide if it’s worth it or not there are 3 options to choose from: 1. Preg-checking and culling the open cows in the fall. 2. Preg-checking and feed open cows separately. 3. Not preg-checking and feed cows over winter. Each year presents its own challenges and one of the simple factors when deciding to preg check is how much feed you have or how much feeding an open cow over winter is going to cost you? 2021 has been a challenging year with much lower hay/silage yields and an increase in feed costs. There was significant carry over feed from 2020 which has helped but this will likely also be poorer quality feed. Many producers will be looking to minimize the number of unneccesary mouths they are feeding this winter which makes pregnancy testing your herd a very important job! BC cattle producers should be aware that the BC government released the AgriRecovery program in fall 2021 which does provide some compensation to producers for preg checking your herds. There are various other economic factors that come into play when deciding if at all or when is best to market cull/open cows which I won’t discuss in this article. However there is a great decision making tool for determining over winter costs/economics of preg checking for your specific herd that can be found at the Beef Cattle Research Council’s website: www. beefresearch.ca. Besides the cost factors preg checking also offers a lot of important herd management information. Conception rates give you an idea of how reproductively fertile your herd is and may highlight some areas of deficiency in your herd management that could be improved. Generally in most cow herds that breed for 3 cycles we aim to have a conception rate of 90% or more. Ideally at least 75% catch within in the first cycle. A lot of herds keep bulls with cows for longer than 3 cycles and then one should aim to have an even better conception rate though I find that generally does not happen and rather leads to a spread out calving season that tends to get more stretched out every year. Some herds due to the area they graze on summer pasture do not have the ability to pull their bulls, so bulls stay with cows till they come off summer pasture. With the sophistication of the ultrasounds we now use, pregancies less than 4 months along can be fairly accurately aged. This makes early pregnancy testing a good option for these herds since we can help estabilish a cut off and therefore cull cows that got bred too late or would otherwise be considered open had you pulled your bulls. As a disclaimer please note that though we are fairly accurate at determining fetal age in the early pregnancy there is still quite a bit of individual variation in when a cow will calve (give or take 2 weeks). Identifying the early calvers in your group (the reproductively ideal group in your herd) allows you to select replacement heifers from that group. Herd reproductive diseases such as trichomoniasis and camplyobacter may also be suspected if there is a poor conception rate or a high number of late bred cattle. Information on bull performance can also be evaluated when preg checking. Putting each cow through the chute in fall allows you to identify/treat any health issues, update inventory/replace tags, administer vaccines or deworming and assess body condition scores/ condition of each cow. When booking your herd for a pregnancy testing cows should be minimum 40 days pregnant (40 days since bull was pulled). We also request your chute/handling system be in good working order and safe (if you ever want a vet to come back) and we prefer that cows are on water so their manure is not as dry (making it easier on the cow and your vet to get the job done). Ideally we would like the weather to be sunny and plus 10 °C but highly unlikely this time year. We ask that you not make fun of your veterinarian when they are as wide as they are tall from all the layers they are wearing to keep warm! If you have further questions regarding preg checking your cow herd or how to make the experience most comfortable for your cows or your veterinarinan please do not hesitate to contact us at the Dawson Creek Veterinary Clinic!

Northern Lights College students Jay Jain, Vaibhav Patil, Vishaldeep Singh, and Ming Li were among those taking lessons. “I think it’s a great opportunity for students. We haven’t rode or grown up around horses, but we’re really excited to learn,” said Jain. The sessions were led and hosted by instructor Samantha Dilworth’s at her indoor riding arena,
built only four years ago. Dilworth has been riding since she was 10, growing up in Tumbler Ridge and previously teaching a horse education program for School District 59. She said the Northern Lights College rodeo team reached out and asked if she was willing to take on some students. “It’s the first time they’ve been out, it’s been really neat. Some were nervous at the start but by the end we had them trotting around,” she said.

Kodiaks beat Navs 6-2, lose to Flyers
Dawson Creek Sneak results
The Dawson Creek Navigators overwhelmed the North Peace Navigators last night, winning 6-2 and outshooting North Peace 4619. It’s the Kodiaks second win in a row and third on the season, and the team is starting to pick up steam. Nolan Bailey had two goals in the game, while Jack Corr had two assists. Thedy also had some trouble in Fairview, losing 6-2 to the Flyers. The Kodiaks were strong out of the gate once again, taking a 2-1 lead in the first period, but were unable to hang in the game the rest of the way. Dawson Creek’s record fell to 3-7 on the season. They’ll be in Fort St. John Thursday night, October 28, for their third straight road game, and third game against the Huskies this year.

DCSS athletes had their first official cross country race of the season — and the first since the 2019-20 school year — at the Dawson Creek Sneak at Bear Mountain, October 16. Competing against students from NPSS, Chetwynd Secondary School, Bert Bowes and Mountain Christian School, it was the team’s first chance to measure itself against athletes from other schools. “It’s really great to see them out here running. For a lot of them it’s their first time competing after two years of training. So to see them get a chance to compete and get a run in is really great,” said coach Patrick Howell. Landon McKechnie (below) had the fastest time in the 5.3km distance, finishing in 19 minutes and 12 seconds, and is on top of his game heading into the Zone Championships in Quesnel next weekend, October 23. The majority of the runners ran a 4.3km run. “The students are all getting best times, though for some this is their only recorded time, and I’m happy with the progression we’re seeing. We do test sets throughout practices and they all continue to improve. We’re looking for them to compete against themselves and get better each time,” Howell said. Results Senior Boys 5.3km 1.
