Naomi Anderson recently qualified for the 500-metre and 1500-metre events at the Canadian youth long-track championships in Quebec City April 14-15. “I feel really excited to be going because my last opportunity was cancelled,” said the grade 8 Central student, who was actually set to go to nationals in Selkirk, Man. two years ago but had her hopes dashed by the pandemic. “I feel if I try my hardest, I might not get a medal but I know I went down there to prove I can do good and show (everyone) what I can do.”

“I’ve been skating almost my whole life, since I was four,” said the teen. “It’s been a life-long hobby, even so I’ve said I want to quit multiple times, I kept going back because it’s the one thing I love.” Her grandmother, Rhonda Bottle, Naomi’s guardian since she was very young, remembers one of the reasons why she started skating. RCMP investigate abduction attempt in Pouce Coupe Rob Brown Managing Editor Dawson Creek RCMP are investigating an abduction attempt in Pouce Coupe. On Wednesday, March 30 at 7:24 pm, Dawson Creek RCMP were notified of an abduction that had occurred in the village of Pouce Coupe. A youth had been riding a bicycle in the area of 47th Avenue and Railroad Road between 5:30 pm and 7:00 pm. A van stopped, and two men put the victim and bicycle in the van.

The van drove around before the victim managed to escape the van, rode the bicycle home, and made the call to the police. It appears that the victim was not physically harmed. The van has been described as a newer blue utility van with no sliding doors and center opening rear doors with no windows. The suspect has been described as Caucasian man, approximately 25-30 years of age, with dyed purple hair and a distinctive black dragon tattoo on his forearm. There is no description available of the other suspect but is believed to be a man.

The police urge anyone who may have been in the area during this time, anyone with dash cam video, and anyone who may have seen individuals and a van matching the description to call the police, said Damon Werrell, Staff Sgt. Dawson Creek RCMP. If you have any information about this contact the Dawson Creek RCMP at (250) 784-3700. editor@dcdn.ca

LANGEVIN: how to make it into Heaven

CONtACt

Gerard Langevin Columnist Published & delivered Thursdays 901-100 Ave, • Dawson Creek, BC • V1G 1W2 Phone: (250) 782-4888 Fax: (250) 782-6300 Email: national@dcdn.ca The Mirror retains full, complete and sole copyright of any advertisement, written or photographic material published in The Mirror. In my last article I wrote about “Securing Your Destiny.” What I am referring to is trying to ensure that we make it to Heaven. I must clarify something first. In the article I said that the ball is entirely in our court. As far as personal intent goes, yes, but the final verdict is with God alone Who decides whether or not we are worthy. Doubtless we are such good people and have no cause for concern. We will simply waltz into eternal bliss. Well, perhaps we should establish a few facts first: a. we need to know who and what we are, b. Who God is, c. what Heaven is. - We are not just flesh, but we are also spiritual beings created in God’s image and likeness, and with a soul that does not die. -Next, God is the Creator of everything. He is Holy, Just, has infinite understanding, and His

knowledge is perfect. We will have to stand before Him on that day and give an account to Him for the life we lived. - And oh yes, Heaven is His home. But we have all fallen into sin - or disobedience to God. Nonetheless, He has given us the Bible with the 10 Commandments which covers the complete scope of what He calls sin so we can know His standards of right and wrong, and good and evil. These sins are: worshiping other gods, making idols, blasphemy, dishonoring the Sabbath, dishonoring our parents, murder, sexual immorality, stealing, lying, greed, and all their associated activities.

LOVED THE WORLD(everyone) THAT HE GAVE HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON (the Lord Jesus Christ), that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Jesus Christ paid for our sins on the cross, and then rose from the dead in complete victory over sin, death, hell, the grave, and the devil, for us. So if we put our trust in Jesus and turn from our sins we will be forgiven and have the hope of the resurrection unto eternal life. That is how we make it to heaven! Now how AWESOME is that! Jesus loves you so much!

The trouble is that we have all broken these in one form or another, so how can we expect to go to Heaven when we die? We cannot erase what we have done. Furthermore, the Bible says that the wages of sin is death.... so if we die in our sins we are lost. But here is the GOOD NEWS - FOR GOD SO

Nawican receives $200,000 in funding under Community Shuttle Bus initiative ‘shuttle bus services for people in remote and Indigenous communities’.

Dave Lueneberg Reporter/Photographer The Nawican Friendship Centre in Dawson Creek is receiving $200,000 to help fund and improve its existing shuttle bus service program. Executive Director Jannah Kohlman said the proposal, formally announced by the Province on Mar. 31, helps fill some of the ‘gaps’ the group provides to outlying communities. “People from Moberly Lake who might need to go to Fort St. John for medical treatment, for example. We’re looking at doing things for our elders and our youth. So, taking them to pow-wows, cultural activities like medicine walks.” 18 different communities including Dawson Creek and Chetwynd are part of the funding package. It includes $2.8 million in new money for

“The long distances between small, isolated communities in the North underscore the importance of maintaining safe, reliable bus services in this part of the province,” said North Coast MLA Jennifer Rice in a statement. The grants are derived from a $7.9 million federal-provincial Safe Restart initiative through the Northern Development Initiative Trust. “The Northern Community Shuttle Program builds upon the success of the previous Highway 16 Transportation Action Plan and connects even more communities and people together,” said Joel McKay, the CEO for NDIT. As part of the funding model, Kohlman said the group is looking at replacing the 14-seat passenger van it uses now. “It’s

only

two-wheel

drive,

and

not

wheelchair accessible,” something she admits can be a challenge when transporting clients to and from remote areas. “We always try to be the ‘yes’ people. Somebody has gone to everyone else and just aren’t able to make it work, we try to do what we can. If they’re in Fort Nelson and they need to come down to Dawson for treatments, or whatever it is, we’ll try to figure something out.” Like Kohlman, South Peace MLA Mike Bernier was glad to hear the group’s proposal had been chosen. “Anything that enhances services to help people in our region with transportation options is a welcomed investment,” shared Bernier. Known as the northern community shuttle program, it replaces the existing community transportation grant. The new program took effect April 1.

Miller, who curls in the club’s Tuesday mixed league, beat out Brad Richardson 6-5 in the final Mar. 31, after shutting out Mens league number-two seed Jeff Ginter Mar. 29 and then sneaking by Commercial league champion John Hegge the following night in exciting fashion, 7-6. “Honestly, our team just started playing well at the right time and that was the key,” said Miller. “We played John Hegge and they had us for most of the game. The pair have called Dawson Creek home base since 2012, representing the city at various competitions in B.C. and Alberta. A short-track speed skater, by choice, Anderson hasn’t been able to take part in any competitions in recent months with provincewide gathering restrictions. With no short-track events in the region, the two settled on a long-track competition, the only one of the season, in Fort St. John in early March.

“I went to Fort St. John. I won’t lie, I wasn’t the best there because I haven’t trained on it (the long track) for a long time,” said the ten-year speed skater.

In a normal year, a short-track oval would have be set up behind the high school, to allow the 14-year-old to train, but between the pandemic and the fluctuating weather this past winter, it’s far from a normal year.

Her times and the fact she qualified for nationals tell a different story.

Pandemic or not, Anderson is determined she will leave her mark at the nationals.

In fact, Anderson has been to a number of provincials and

She leaves for Quebec City next Tuesday.

Join a long standing tradition by placing your baby announcement in the local newspaper!

Slow cookers can be unsung kitchen heroes any time of the year, but particularly during the colder seasons. That’s because slow cookers take on one-pot meals with ease. A person simply places all the ingredients inside the crock, then returns in 8 hours or so to a completely cooked meal. Certain recipes, including stews, lend themselves well to the slow-cooking method. While beef is often associated with stew, plenty of proteins can take the place of beef, including pork. This recipe for “Golden Harvest Pork Stew” from “Crock•Pot® 365 Year-Round Recipes” (Publications International, Ltd.) by the Crock•Pot Kitchens utilizes pork and combines it with potatoes, carrots and corn for a stew that some may even mistake for a chowder.

Hunting is everyone’s right Provincial government sparking division through decisions without consultation

Government decisions on the moose and mountain caribou hunts were made without consulting locals impacted by the decision.

Decision on the hunt should be based on science and consultations with hunters from local First Nations and communities.

Hunters – Indigenous and non-Indigenous – have been contacting my office concerned about the heavy-handed way the moose hunt has been reduced and the caribou hunt closed by the provincial government.

Down south in Victoria they may not understand the importance of hunting in the lives of so many of us, but I will make sure they hear that message. You can share your ideas and concerns with me through the contact methods below. I will take your concerns to the government.
