Local ICBC motion one to watch come UBCM, says mayor Rob Brown Managing Editor Dawson Creek mayor Dale Bumstead says a recent NCLGA resolution concerning ICBC rate inequities will be an interesting item to watch this fall at the Union of BC Municipalities.

“When it comes to windshield deductible – there was always that unhappiness about windshield. There has been some changes with a changing deductible amount,” says Bumstead. When it comes to ICBC inequities from region to region, Bumstead notes territories are assigned based on geography. “For example, the border) lines have to be drawn somewhere – however there is a concern that someone in Telkwa is in a different territory than Smithers – but are only 15 km away from each other.” “The issue today with ratings and coverage – really been changed since the legislation changed about two years ago – when they removed the ability to sue for a minor injuries – and the financial picture for ICBC has changed from even five years ago.” As far as the matter gaining traction at UBCM come September in Whistler, Bumstead says it will be interesting to see. “The local conferences bring their resolutions and we’ll see I this one is funnelled down and makes the grade as an important issue, or if it is deemed a more local issue, and that it should be dealt with at this local level.” editor@dcdn.ca

The motion asked the province and the government’s auto insurance company to consider a different rate class for vehicles in the north, as well as asks for winter tires subsidies and elimination of windshield deductibles

Prior to politics, Bumstead had a 32-year career with ICBC, with the last 12 years as Regional Vice President of Operations, and Vice President of Broker Relations and Sales. He brings a unique perspective to the topic. A Fort St. John motion concerning rates was combined with similar issue raised by the Smithers and Williams Lake communities earlier this month in FSJ at the North Central Local Government Association convention.

Forever in our hearts and memories

Roy Laurence Thompson 1945 – 2022

It is with great sorrow our family announces the passing of Roy Laurence Thompson, long time resident of Dawson Creek, BC. Born February 20, 1945, Roy passed away March 1, 2022 at the age of 77. Taking part in family activities and functions was very important to Roy. It didn’t matter when or where they were. Could be an aftergrad barbecue, a bowling tournament or bowling banquet, even to a family reunion in Lincoln City, Oregon. Over the years Roy was a boy scout leader, played baseball with the Northland Utilities team, Park Hotel ball team and the Ace Oil ball team. In the winter Roy curled in bonspiels in Rolla, Bonanza, Grande Prairie and Dawson Creek. Bowling was another sport Roy took part in, eventually making it into a family event that lasted many, many years. When Roy decided he was up for something new, he took up line dancing. Along with the Line Dancers he participated in the Fall Fair Parade, as well as at the Band Shell in Kin Park, the Dawson Mall, grand openings and the Rolla Hall, just to name a few. Roy loved every minute of everything he did. As per Roy’s wishes he was cremated. No celebration of life will be held. Anyone wishing to make a donation in Roy’s memory may make it to: Senior Citizen’s Hall, 1101 McKellar Avenue, Dawson Creek, BC V1G 2S2 or to the charity of their choice.

Everett Eldon Haney 1955-2022

A celebration of Everett’s life will take place on Saturday, June 11th, 2022, at 1:00pm at The Family Clubhouse in Caravans West RV Park, 3980 Squilax Anglemont Road in Scotch Creek, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations in Everett’s memory may be made to the North Shuswap Health Centre, 3874 Squilax Anglemont Road, Scotch Creek, BC, V0E 1M5. Condolences may be expressed to the family from www.myalternatives.ca

Leonard Donaldson March 4, 1938 – May 26, 2022

Leonard Donaldson, a lifetime resident of the North Rolla area, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, May 26, 2022 in the Dawson Creek Hospital. Len will best be remembered for his honesty, integrity, fierce determination, and sense of humor. He lived by his values and morals and respected anyone else who did the same. After Grade 12 graduation (1956), Len’s early adult years were spent working off the farm to pay for the farm. He worked various jobs from commercial ice fishing, to mining, to surveying, and everything in between; wherever he could make a buck for the farm he would go. Len was cautious but not scared. He proved this by marrying (1977) a widow with four small children and became an instant Dad. He basically became a hero to five people who loved and respected him very deeply. Len’s love of nature and all that nature had to offer was second to none. He spent his lifetime promoting conservation and enhancement, specifically focusing on farming in conjunction with nature. Len and his wife Molly managed to create the “Donaldson Conservation Project” leaving a legacy that promoted all animals large and small and every form of bird and bug found in the Peace River Region. They were also recipients of the L.B. Thompson Conservations Award in 1999. Since 1987, this award has been bestowed on 24 individuals and conservation organizations who continue to make significant contributions to soil conservation in Canada. Len understood how to utilize local trees, flora, and fauna in all stages of development and if you let him, he would spend hours trying to convince you to plant a tree. Another big passion of Len’s was food; whether if it was growing his own or hunting. He spent a great deal of time perfecting wild meat recipes. He was famous for not wasting any part of the wildlife that he harvested. He was also known to drive miles for the right loaf of bread or piece of pie. Len also spent his entire lifetime trying to preserve and protect Indigenous artifacts that were located on his farm which he ultimately donated to Treaty 8. As kids, we were often told how important it is to know where we came from so that we would know where we are going and that these artifacts would be an asset to understanding our local history. Len will be missed by all that knew him. An informal celebration of life of Len’s life will be held on his farm on Sunday, June 5, 2022 at 2:00pm. For friends so wishing, donations may be made in Len’s memory to the Tse’k’wa Heritage Society, 10233 100 Ave., Fort St. John, BC V1J 1Y8. Very Respectfully Reynars Funeral Home & Crematorium
