Pouce Coupe dedicates lane name to community builder Sukrit Parmar Flyers this week The Brick Home Hardware M&M Meats No Frills/Loblaws Peace Country Toyota Save-On-Foods Shopper’s Drug Mart Sobeys/Safeway WalMart
Rob Brown Managing Editor Thursday was a day to celebrate the life and work of Sukrit Parmar. The Village of Pouce Coupe gathered Thursday afternoon for the unveiling of Sukrit Parmar Lane – in recognition of her community building. Son Vinay and grandson Rayman were on hand along with extended and community family.
Vinay said the day was a celebration. “It is about the lifetime of work and charity work in Pouce Coupe,” he said. From a practical point of view – the village fire chief Blair Deveau said the naming of the lane helps unfamiliar first responders in navigating a lane previously without a name. Before coming to Canada in 1966 she received her Teaching Degree
and in 1967 School District #59 hired her and she taught for 36 years in a variety of roles. Parmar sponsored many children through World Vision and initiated the Pouce Coupe Food Bank, sitting on many committees. She was also an entrepreneur of several businesses in both Dawson Creek and Pouce Coupe. The opening of her restaurant Curry Et Cetera was a lifelong dream. editor@dcdn.ca

Chetwynd breaks ground on new public library Tom Summer Reporter/Photographer Friends, family, residents, and community partners gathered Friday afternoon to break ground on the new public library being built in Chetwynd. Construction is slated to begin later this month. The event also commemorated the life of Yvonne Elden, an avid reader and pillar of the community. She was well-known for her work in creating the first library through the Little Prairie Ladies Club, in addition being a School District 59 teacher, board trustee, and librarian for many years.
Community members of all stripes were all in attendance for the groundbreaking ceremony last week. SUMMER
Yvonne’s son, Charles Elden, spoke of his mother’s dedication to the community, joy in helping others, and love of books. The family has donated $5,000 to the new building, carrying forward her legacy. “She would wholeheartedly support this project, as she was a lover of books, learning, and helping the community grow. She often said it doesn’t matter what you read, as long as you read,” he said. Charles added that his mother spent many hours volunteering at the library in the 1960s, when he and his siblings were just children, and was grateful for the exposure to a world of stories and information at a young age. “Here was a cornucopia of books we could read to our heart’s content, new worlds to explore long before the days of internet and immediate information availability. Mum might have had similar influences in her youth, as my first recollection of going to a library was visiting her parents in Armstrong, where my grandmother was a librarian,” said Charles. The new library is expected to be far more than just another library, serving as a community centre for the region and its residents. Over four million has been contributed by PRRD Electoral Area E, the District of Chetwynd, the Chetwynd Public Library and the Northern Development Initiative Trust, all partners in the $5.2 million dollar project. Coastal GasLink and Surerus Murphy Joint Venture also donated $50,000 each to the project, acknowledging the value and need for the project. West Fraser Chetwynd Forest Industries and the Canfor Chetwynd Sawmill are donating lumber to aid construction of the project, utilizing locally sourced timber. Area E Director Dan Rose thanked everyone involved for their contributions and said he’s honoured to start the next chapter of the library’s life in Chetwynd. “The purpose of this event is to celebrate the occasion of a new chapter in the book of the Chetwynd Public Library, and to acknowledge the time and effort of many people and organizations who have worked on this project,” he said. Kiskatinaw Fall Fair
With the arrival of Spring in the Peace Country farmers are out on the land getting their crops planted, and many people are heading to the local nurseries to take advantage of plants that have already been started, whether they be flowers, vegetables, shrubs or trees. Others have started their plants from seeds and watched them grow inside the warmth of their homes or greenhouses. Whatever method you choose spring is a wonderful time of growth and greening up. While you are busy with your planting, why not consider a few extra plants that might produce the winning floral arrangement or vegetables at the Kiskatinaw Fall Fair that is 2 months from now, on August 5, 6 & 7. Members are busy working on the fair book right now, and will be mowing the grass at the grounds and starting maintenance on the buildings. If you would like to lend a hand in keeping these beautiful grounds in good shape, or want to help with the Fair, please contact any of the following:

Dave Lueneberg Reporter/Photographer While many of us remember field trips we took in school, the latest trip for ten Dawson Creek students is likely to stick in their minds for years to come. The students, and two of their teachers from Mountain Christian School, spent 12 days earlier in the month touring Europe, visiting some of the historical sites recognizing Canada’s involvement in both world wars. “We were able to visit Juno Beach and Vimy Ridge for instance,” said high school teacher Megan Polowski in describing the trip. “We learned about the Berlin Wall. They have a memorial set up and remnants of the wall still there.”
Students from Mountain Christian School in Dawson Creek visit the trenches at Vimy Ridge as part of a 12-day tour commemorating Canada’s involvement in both world wars. SUBMITTED is held every night to recognize the fallen.
The trip included stops in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and Great Britain.
The trip, the first of its kind for the independent school, was originally scheduled for the spring of 2020, but was shelved until this year due to the pandemic.

“To actually be in the environment, rather than just learning that in school was a really good experience,” said the grade 11 student. “Being there and seeing where it all took place. Seeing the liberation of one part of the Netherlands by Canadian soldiers. In Germany, seeing all the bullet holes in the walls from the attack on Berlin.” A visit to Vimy Ridge, though, is what stuck out for him. “It was a very emotional site, seeing all the craters in the ground from the attack, seeing all the memorials there.”

Those same ‘emotional’ feelings were shared by 14-year-old Shawnacy Emde, but for a different reason. “Knowing that I can change history if I go into the military. Learning from past experiences, I hope I can educate others about what I saw.” The trenches at Vimy Ridge is something the grade 9 student will, likely, remember most. “It felt like we were there. We were in the moment. To see what
“Unfortunately, some of the students who originally signed up have since graduated,” said Polowski. “But, this was hugely successful,” in summing up its value. happened back then was very emotional.” The fact that many of the soldiers who fought in both world wars weren’t much older than the group, not lost with the students who went. “We visited some grave sites. A lot of the kids were just 18, 19,” said Graham Spitz, just 15 himself. One of battle grounds during the Second World War was Dieppe, liberated on September 1, 1944, by soldiers from the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division, but at a high cost to Allied forces. “Our visit to Dieppe was mainly guided by the Canadian involvement. Many of the headstones we saw were Canadians,” said Spitz. “We also took part in a Last Post ceremony.” The commemoration, held in Ypres, Belgium, near Flanders Field,
“I think it’s really benefited the students that were able to go,” added Polowski. “I know, in my case, it will certainly change the way I teach about these events.”

Dolly (Maureen Stella Ann) Fynn January 16, 1937 – May 29, 2022
Dolly Fynn peacefully passed away surrounded by her family on Sunday May 29, 2022, in Dawson Creek BC, where she was a long-time resident. The oldest of five girls, Dolly was born to Maurice and Emma Edinger on January 16, 1937, in Dawson Creek, BC. When she passed, she was 85 years young. Dolly is survived by her children: Margaret Olsen (Aaron) and Bradley Drott (Barb); stepchildren: Lisa and Lori Fynn; grandchildren: Nicole Maynard (Andrew), Kyle Duperron (Meaghan), Jennifer Chapman (Kolton), Kristopher Drott (Haley); as well as numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and so many friends, who loved her dearly. It is well known that Dolly loved having a house full of people. Whether it be at the farm on Reasbeck Road, in Pouce Coupe, or Dawson Creek, she was always happy serving the best baked goods-buns, carrot cakes, cinnamon buns, tarts, fudge, and various other goodies. It was rare for anyone to decline an invitation to a meal at Dolly’s as she was always cooking big breakfasts and holiday dinners for her friends and family. Many memories were made around Grandma Dolly’s table. Thankfully, Dolly was always willing to share her recipes though there’s a slight chance an ingredient or two would be left out just to keep things interesting (of course, she would swear that is absolutely not true). All who knew Dolly will attest that she was a hardworking, sassy, wise, and fiercely loyal woman. Dolly was thoughtful, marginally patient, and always willing to lend an ear or a shoulder to cry on. She was a rock to many people especially her family. Dolly will be forever cherished and missed. For friends and family so wishing, donations may be made in Dolly’s memory to the Dawson Creek Hospital Foundation at Dawson Creek & District Hospital Foundation (dchospitalfoundation.ca) which provided compassionate and dignified care to our girl, Dolly. Rest in Peace. Very Respectfully Reynars Funeral Home & Crematorium

Obituaries
Jack Weisgerber June 12, 1940 – June 3, 2022 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jack Weisgerber (John Sylvester Weisgerber) on June 3, 2022, surrounded by his family in North Vancouver. He is survived by his wife of 60 years Judy, his daughter Pam Haglof and son-in-law Dale Haglof, son-in-law Julian Wooldridge as well as three grandsons Josh, Luke, and Cole, one granddaughter Jemma, and his brother Richard. He is predeceased by his daughter Joanne Wooldridge and his sisters Lorna and Patricia. Jack was an upstanding community leader for more than 60 years. He was a member of the British Columbia Legislative Assembly for Peace River South from October 1986 until May 16, 2001. He has been an exemplary citizen, politician, businessman and family man. In the early 70s, Jack moved his family from Alberta to Dawson Creek, B.C. where he ran a small business and became an active member of the community. He then served as the Regional Economic Development Commissioner for the Peace River Regional District. He volunteered for many years as the President of the Dawson Creek Fall Fair Board, a major event in the community. His community service also includes being the President and Director of the Rotary Club of Dawson Creek. Jack continued to volunteer throughout his life. During this time Jack lived on a farm raising and training Conamara ponies and horses and taking his daughters to horse shows. He was involved with the Gyro Club for many years where he enjoyed the comradery and social gatherings of the members. He was an avid skier and fisherman and took the family on many great adventures, which we will always treasure. Jack was first elected to the British Columbia legislature in 1986 as the Social Credit Party of British Columbia candidate for Peace River South. He served in the Social Credit government in several posts including Minister of State for Nechako and Northeast as the Minister of Energy Mines and Petroleum Resources, and as British Columbia’s very first Minister of Native Affairs. This position was very important to him as he fostered relationships between the First Nations Community and the government. In the 1991 election, he was one of only seven SoCred candidates to win re-election. This re-election speaks to the great ties and respect his constituents had for him. Jack then became interim leader of the party. After leaving politics, he was appointed to the board of BC Hydro from 2001 until 2007 and then served again in that position from July 2014 to July 2018. He was also a member of the British Columbia Treaty Commission, where he was chair of the Finance Committee. After retirement Jack and Judy became snowbirds where Jack enjoyed playing pool, shuffleboard, lawn bowling, playing poker and hiking. Jack made it a point to go for a walk every day possible. Jack will be most remembered as an outstanding husband, father and grandfather, and will be dearly missed. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. To write condolences to the family, please visit www. mckenziefuneralservices.com. Memorial donations in Jacks’ name may be made to a charity of your choice.
