DC’s Dark Arc Welding wins 2022 Indigenous business award
Ashley added the award was a surprise.
“We were not expecting this, or this level of recognition. After ten years of hard work, making it through the pandemic, and working many hours while raising our son, it brings a profound feeling of happiness that working to build this business has been worth it.”
Presented annually, the awards recognize the contributions of extraordinary Indigenous businesses and entrepreneurs across BC, while helping to elevate connections between the province’s Indigenous and nonIndigenous economies.
By recognizing outstanding people and businesses, the IBA gives voice to Indigenous entrepreneurship while modelling success for others to follow. Now in its 14th year, the program counts over 210 remarkable businesses among its alumni.
Rob Brown Maanging EditorA Dawson Creek business is the recipient of a 2022 indigenous business award – Dark Arc Welding Inc. is the Young Entrepreneur of the Year from the BC Achievement Foundation.
Owner Dustin and Ashley Kucher sat down with Mirror for a chat about their business – and the new award.
“Dustin was welding with his
truck as an owner-operator.
In August of 2012, Dustin Incorporated the company, and I became involved by helping him organize his receipts and paperwork to take to the bookkeeper.”
Eventually the pair picked up a picker truck with one more employee. Ashley learned payroll, GST, filing of corporate taxes, and all the other administrative responsibilities as a business owner.
“In 2020, we made the move of our business and home from Moberly Lake to Dawson Creek. After moving to Dawson Creek we seen positive growth in the company,” says Dustin.
Having an office, shop, and fabrication space in town has provided stability and is their official headquarters.
“The award is a credit to our great employees and clients,” he adds.
This year’s award theme is “Thuyshaynum: preparing the path, directing the feet,” which addresses the tireless work being done to correct perceptions of Indigenous history and build respectful, meaningful relationships.
The recipients will be recognized in a formal gala ceremony – open to the public – held on November 29 at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver.

Fundraising evening dinner/dance set for bear attack victims
Rob Brown Maanging EditorA pair of gofundme fundraisers for victims of a vicious bear attack on Bear Mountain are approaching a combined fundraised amount of $35,000.
One fundraiser for Analyn Bartolome and family is being organized by DeAnna Wry.
“I am fundraising to assist Analyn’s family, her husband and two teenage children. The funds will be used to help with costs of travel to Vancouver, and loss of income; as Analyn worked very hard to provide for her family.”
The second is for Leosette Canoy organized by Wennali Canoy.
“(She) is facing a long recovery after the bear attack and she was critically injured.
She was confined here in the Edmonton Royal Alexandra Hospital.”
In addition, a fundraising dinner and silent auction and dance is slated for Sat. Nov. 5 at the George Dawson Inn. For more information call 250-7840108. Silent auction at noon –dinner for 6:30pm.
Police say the two women were critically injured two weeks ago after a black bear attacked them while hiking the cross-country ski club trails on Bear Mountain, south of Dawson Creek.
The bear then prevented family and emergency responders from the victims until it was killed, making way for the victims to be airlifted away with severe lifethreatening injuries from the attack.

Singer-songwriter and multiinstrumentalist T. Nile is looking forward to being back on the road after a two year pandemic break during a western Canadian tour including stops in Dawson Creek and Beaverlodge.
She found herself thinking there was not a lot going on during the pandemic.
“I thought I was not doing much, then I look back and said ‘Holy Moly, there is some work there’,” she says to the Mirror noting more than 40 songs written and worked on between 2020 and 2022.
If she has one pandemic regret – it was not engaging in any online performances.
“I didn’t do them and there is a bit of regret. Now I’m dealing with a bit of stage fright which is new for for me.”
She says that live music environment is something that can’t be beat.
“Live music and performance is a universal experience all the right reasons. It is all about about the new faces met on the road. Electric times and powerful live moments – music transcends and it is something experienced together, uniting us over dividing us.”
For the next studio album it is about finding the best idea for the group of songs she’s looking to put out.
“Something a bit more stripped back, and minimal. Lap steel, viola, acoustic stuff, not much else,” she estimates.
The new tour will see new setlists each night with her road testing some of the new material as well.
“It’s an exciting time to get back out there for live shows and releasing new music.”
T. Nile plays Beaverlodge on Oct. 25 and the Dawson Creek Art Gallery on Oct. 26.

PRRD Area C election result reversed, validity challenge before Supreme Court
With evidence pointing to persons voting when not entitled to vote in Area C, the election thought to be won by chair Brad Sperling, has been awarded to challenger Suzanne Haab.
“Upon review of this application, the Supreme Court will decide whether a new election must be held in Area C only. This application will not challenge the validity of the election in Area B or any of the five assent votes. Suzanne Haab will take office as Electoral Area Director for
Area C until such time as the Supreme Court issues a decision,” said the PRRD this evening in a release.
It was reported on Sat. Oct 15 that Sperling won with 233 votes, compared to Suzanne Haab finishing with 232 votes.
New numbers release Tuesday have Haab at 234 - and Sperling at 231.
The Adventures of Ace O’Hara
“There is no evidence to indicate this was done purposefully to undermine the validity of the election. However, due to the closeness of the election results, the small number of ineligible ballots may have determined the overall election result and the validity of the election must be challenged.”

Black Adam asks what it is to be a superhero
Black Adam is a strong DC offering – and tying all kinds of existing properties together with the Justice Society, the Justice League, Suicide Squad, and more.
When you get to a 20 plus year career in action, some of these back stories are similar. A bit of Scorpion King backstory, a little Hercules, the same myth and world as Shazam! And you’ve got Black Adam.
Johnson is great in the role, as are most at this point very well cast in super hero movies.
James Bond Pierce Brosnan is fantastic as Doctor Fate, as is Aldis Hodge as Hawkman.
As epic as Thor: Love and Thunder, more mature than Shazam and very much in the same mythos as your top DC characters Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Kal-El.
You know you are in the safe hands with the team of director of a handful of Liam Neeson late era actioners, produced by Seven Bucks and Rock buddy Beau Flynn, and the writer of Jungle Cruise.
The action sequences do reflect Snyder and are in that Snyder/Nolan Universe started way back
when with Man of Steel and arguably Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy.
The sequences are fantastic – there are a few that take a minute for audiences to “get” being used to traditional Superman flying horizontal instead of standing straight up and more floating – so there are a lot of sequences for Dwayne to simply stare and react.
There is a long joke in this take from Superman II with doors that seems overplayed and lost after the repeated use of it.
Black Adam does question slightly what is a superhero, and what types of emergencies make them respond to help earth. However it is something The Boys, and other shows on non DC and Marvel platforms do all the time.
Johnson is underplaying quite a bit in this – something almost reminiscent of Arnold in the first Conan flick. It is a solid DC film – perhaps the most mature and is a great entry for the comics as Marvel will reply this year with the equally epic Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Black Adam plays this weeks in Dawson Creek

Perry was born April 6, 1934 in Rosetown Sask. He was the 3rd child of Leslie & Iona. His siblings were Pat, George, Glenna and Grant. Perry’s younger years was spent in the area around Loon Lake.
Perry had a big entrepreneurial spirit. During his lifetime he worked at driving fuel trucks, worked in a mine, sawmill, and then in the early 50’s he moved to the Peace River Country where he started his farming adventures. In 1970/71 Perry wasn’t busy enough, so he pooled his resources to go into the hog raising business which turned out around 2400 hogs a year. With farming, haying, raising cattle and the pigs, days were long but very fulfilling.
After dealing with health issues, Perry sold the farm and moved south to start his semi-retirement in Greenwood, BC. They moved equipment, the cows and their horses. Gone were the 40 below winters and piles of snow; now days were spent moving irrigation pipes, haying and taking care of the gophers.
Perry always dreamed of owning a commercial fishing boat and in 1987 he purchased his first boat, the Ocean Prince. Perry came out of semi-retirement, now juggling taking care of the cattle and fishing Sockeye Salmon from June to Aug. He also purchased a Gillnet Boat and made many trips up to Prince Rupert. He loved to share his fishing passion with his family. Shiz, Darren, Merna, Joe, Cassie and Brad were able to join him and enjoy catching and eating the fish they caught.
In the late 90’s the lifetime farmer moved on up, moving to the deluxe condo in the sky with an amazing view. He was close to his boats, which he checked at least twice a week and hung out, sharing many a cup of coffee and stories with the fellow fisherman down by the dock.
Perry’s journey was filled with many joys and battles especially with his health, but he never let it slow him down from doing what he wanted. His whole fishing career came after he had his leg amputated. “Quit” was not in his vocabulary.
After a brief illness with pneumonia and being diagnosed with lung cancer, Perry passed away at the Richmond General Hospital with his family by his side. A Celebration of his life was held on Sept. 24, 2022 in Delta BC.
He is predeceased by his parents, sisters Pat & Glenna, brothers Elwood & George and sister-in-law Sheila.
He leaves to mourn his loving wife and soulmate Shiz, children Linda (Rick) Gies, Merna (Joe) Boltz, Darren (Lita) Conlin, Wendy (John) Pierce & honourary daughter Ruth Peirce. Grandchildren Jason (Merina), Devon, Colton (Tanaya), Cassie (Dayton), Brad (Kielee), Lindsey & Brett. Great-Grandchildren Tolor and Kalla-Rae. Brother Grant (Alvina), Brother-in-law Angus and numerous nieces and nephews.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Perry Neil Conlin on September 9th, 2022 in Richmond BC at the age of 88 years old.
