CT scanner for DC to improve NE diagnostic imaging
Rob Brown Managing Editor
Residents of Northeast BC now have better access to diagnostic imaging services with the installation of a new CT scanner at Dawson Creek and District Hospital (DCDH).
This will allow the hospital to continue to deliver a range of clinical and diagnostic services that support primary, community and specialized services.
This project represents a $2.55
million investment into better healthcare in Dawson Creek, and the cost of is shared between the Ministry of Health (60%) and the Peace River Regional Hospital District (40%). This includes the purchase of the new machine, replacing the existing equipment, renovations to the scan room and other costs.
The CT scanner replacement project began in early August and included renovations and
construction in the scan room, installation of the new machine, acceptance testing and application training for technologists. Earlier this month, the new CT was put into service for urgent and semi-urgent diagnostic needs while application training took place; DCDH Medical Imaging has now resumed booking of non-urgent scans as well, with a full return to regular services by the end of October.

Five dairy groups making a splash in the western Canadian milk game
A handful of western provincial boards have poured their resources and unanimously agree to support a new modernized governance model for working together.
BC Milk, BC Dairy, Alberta Milk, SaskMilk, and Dairy Farmers of Manitoba have all agreed to a partnership approach that aligns the resources and expertise of the five organizations under one WMP.
The WMP is very much a longterm, forward-looking partnership which will continue to spearhead several priority initiatives already underway.
These include: continuing to advance a new state-of-the-art dairy concentration facility to be built in Alberta, with the capacity to accommodate up to 300 million litres of milk from western dairy farmers per year, as well as aligning policies across the four western provinces to ensure farmers are treated equitably and there is consistency for processors as we continue to collectively focus on the most innovative practices for ensuring
farm excellence.
The next step in WMP transformation is finalizing the new governance model, which is expected to be completed by Spring
2023. Following this important milestone, the work will begin to fully operationalize the WMP within the legislative framework of each province.

Laminitis (Founder) Diagnosis and Management
BY STEPH PARTH, Dawson Creek Veterinary Clinic
The equine foot is an incredible structure. It withstands heavy loads, temperature changes, concussive forces and moisture. The fact that it is the equivalent of the human middle nger in anatomy is impressive enough, let alone its ability to bear the hefty load of a horse. It is no surprise that anything causing pain in the foot of a horse can lead to serious consequences. One such insult is laminitis, otherwise known as ‘founder’.
Laminitis is a complex and multifactorial disease of the equine foot. Broadly, the term refers to in ammation of the lamellae, which are that nger-like projections that interdigitate the co n bone (third phalanx) and the hoof wall. Without these immensely strong lamellae, the co n bone would not be suspended in the hoof wall and the horse could not bear weight. Laminitis is
technically a syndrome and there are many presentations that can make diagnosis and treatment di cult. Some horses present for a sudden onset (acute) episode of pain, while others have subclinical (no outward signs) of laminitis over a long period of time (chronic) with intermittent episodes. If laminitis is bad enough, the lamellae can become damaged, and the co n bone is no longer supported in the foot leading to downwards rotation or ‘sinking’ of the bone in the foot. If rotation is bad enough, the tip of the co n bone can poke through the sole of the foot. Once this is observed, the prognosis is grave and very little can be done to treat the horse.
There are many factors that are thought to cause or predispose a horse to laminitis. Among them are overfeeding of grain or high carbohydrate diets, excessive use of corticosteroids, excessive concussion of the feet on hard surfaces, supporting limb laminitis (when one foot supports more weight due to an injury on the opposite limb), anything causing in ammation, fever or toxemia (diarrhea, proximal enteritis, metritis, retained palcenta, etc), metabolic disease (Equine metabolic syndrome, Cushing’s disease) and black walnut ingestion, which can be found in certain shavings.
It can sometimes be di cult to diagnose laminitis. A ected horses generally assume a ‘saw-horse’ stance in which the front feet are held in front of the horse’s body in an attempt to shift weight to their hind feet as these are less often painful. Interestingly, a negative hoof tester exam does not rule out foot pain or laminitis as this depends on the horse’s hoof and sole thickness. Nerve blocks (a technique in which local freezing is deposited next to nerves supplying feeling to the foot and blocking sensation of structures below the deposition of the freezing) can be helpful to localize the pain to the front part of the foot. Radiographs (X-Rays) are needed to determine if the co n bone has rotated in order
to determine prognosis and assist podiatry. Venograms can be performed to assess the vascularity of the foot, though this is a specialized diagnostic that must be performed in the referral equine practice setting. Diagnosis is ultimately made by collecting a thorough history, completing a physical exam and ruling out other causes of lameness.
Because it is a complex syndrome, laminitis can be di cult to treat. Many treatments have come and gone out of style, and there is no one speci c treatment. Addressing and treating the main cause for laminitis is important, which can encompass a plethora of medical options. NSAIDS (Nonsteroidal anti-in ammatories) such as Phenylbutazone (‘bute’) or unixin meglumine (‘banamine’) can be used for pain control. Addition of Tylenol may be a reasonable option as well, but ask your veterinarian for a safe dosage prior to administration. Soft bedding such as sand and soft soled boots can help alleviate some pain. Lastly, prevention is key, and a horse with known triggers for laminitic are ups should be well managed to prevent episodes and worsening damage to the foot structures.
Working closely with your farrier is very important in cases of laminitis. X-Rays to determine sole depth can be very helpful to help guide trimming, and frequent trimming and shoeing may be required to aid in management of your horse’s laminitis. The team of vets at Dawson Creek Veterinary Clinic are happy to work with your farrier in partnership to alleviate the pain and lameness that accompanies laminitis. If you suspect your horse is su ering from laminitis, you should schedule an exam with your veterinarian. Early intervention and reduction of triggers results in fewer episodes of in ammation, reducing the amount of damage to the foot and increases the quality of life of your equine partner. http://www.southwestequine.com.au/ understanding-laminitis-fouunder/

Peace region ignored in protection services, and safer health care workplaces announcement
While the Province is taking steps to build safer workplaces for health-care workers and patients with a new security model across all health authorities –none of these steps will be taken in Dawson Creek, or the north Peace region.
The province announced the hiring of 320 protection services employees and expanding funding to SWITCH BC, a new organization focused on addressing workplace safety – however only Mills Memorial Hospital, Prince Rupert Regional Hospital, and the University Hospital of Northern British Columbia will see any of the new workers.
South Peace MLA Mike Bernier noted just three locations in northern BC may not cut it.
“Well I will take that as although people are frustrated, people are being respectful up here,”
he said to the Mirror Thursday.
“It’s a sad situation if we need to have security in our hospitals to protect our health workers whose jobs are to help us. I encourage everyone to respect the work they are doing as we continue to fight for a better health care system.”
Mental health calls taking up their time has been a longstanding concern with the Dawson Creek RCMP.
“These are matters that are not necessarily crimes, but we are called.“ said RCMP Staff Sgt. Damon Werrell to the Mirror previously.
“Matters like mental health, public nuisance calls, addictions, need the addressing of problems and not just arresting,“ he says.

Ray Proulx
This past July, Movember invited men from each of our Brotherland programs to a Global Indigenous Men’s Gathering. Individuals from the Auckland areas of New Zealand, New South Wales Region of Australia; the cities of Winnipeg and Brandon, Rouseau River First Nation, Long Plain First Nation, and Birdtail First Nation; Tadoule Lake and York Factory; and Arviat, Nunavut came together in Churchill, Manitoba to share their stories, traditions, teachings, and learnings with one another. Ray Proulx joined us from the Aboriginal Health and Wellness Centre in Winnipeg, a Movemberfunded Men’s Clubs Bros Group.
My mother was born in Churchill -- and my grandma, and grandpa, and uncles and some aunties. When I was around nine years old, me and my mother took a trip there to visit my uncle and my grandma. I remember going down by the bay on a hot day, and that it was beautiful, and walking by the water -- we could feel the cold air there. When I’m there, it feels like I’m home --like I belong there.
If I had to describe what the Churchill Men’s Gathering experience was for me, it was that even though we are separated by –how many miles across the water -- we all suffer from a lot of the same things that have been put upon us by colonization and our culture being taken away. But, we
have that same bond of reclaiming who we are as Indigenous men.
The man I used to be, was in trouble with the law and on a path to nowhere growing up. I was lost, like a lot of youth. And I realized one day that I had to change my life if I wanted to have a good future for myself and my future family. I quit all the bad things that were holding me back, I started my own business, I met my wife and had children.
Being involved with my culture helped, believing in a higher power, the Creator, God, really helped me with my daily struggles. Growing up, I was introduced to my culture but I really didn’t practice it as much. I actually practiced it more when I was in prison.
If I could talk to myself back then, I hope I would have done it a lot sooner. But, that’s the way life is. Sometimes you have to live and learn, and sometimes you learn the hard way. And unfortunately, that’s the only way I learned.
I’m still continuing on that journey, trying to understand and learn from what’s being told to me from my elders. I love it. Learning from the other cultures at the gathering was very spiritual. All of us men, we have a fighting spirit and we’re coming back stronger than ever. All of us coming together made us all realize that we’re not in this alone.
The most memorable moment from the gathering was the sweat
with all of the men. Reason being that, when we’re in there, it’s a place where we can be judgementfree and not have to worry about what people are going to think about us or what people are gonna say about us. There’s just a spiritual experience about it.
I had a prophetic awakening in that sweat -- explaining to the other men about being good fathers. I spoke about how as
men, sometimes we go quick to discipline our children instead of really listening to them and understanding what they’re going through. Especially here in Canada, with children being missing, we need to understand that we have to be a little bit more gentle with our children, and not push them away, because that’s when they go missing. We have to understand that as men we’re strong -- physically and mentally.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Lyle Ernest Braden, a long-time resident of Dawson Creek, British Columbia, on Monday, October 17, 2022, at the age of 90.
Lyle Braden was born February 17, 1932, to Lyle and Verna Braden at home on their farm. He was the second of four children and grew up on the family farm at what is now known as Braden Crossing near Rolla.
In 1953, Lyle married Jean Scott. They had four children, Terry, Randy, Shelley and Jim and made their home in Dawson Creek.
The majority of Lyle’s career was in the wholesale food industry. In his spare time, Lyle loved the outdoors and the stories of his many hunting, fishing & snowmobile trips are still talked about today. He also liked to garden and always had a vegetable garden.
Lyle volunteered much of his time to groups, such as the Elks Club, Paradise Valley Snowmobile Club and the River Rats to name a few.
After he retired in 1991, he got very interested in genealogy and joined the Roots Group and the South Peace Historical Society.
Lyle is survived by his wife of 69 years, Jean; his children, Terry (Gary) Odynak, Randy (Maria) Braden, Shelley (Greg) Middlemass, Jim (Denise) Braden; 9 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters Vesta Darling and Bonnie Readman.
With respect to Lyle’s wishes, no formal service will be held, but his immediate family will get together next year to inter his ashes at the Briar Ridge Cemetary.
Very Respectfully, Reynars Funeral Home & Crematorium
