A fundraising dinner with a large silent auction component and more has brought more than $60K for bear attack victims Analyn Shurtliff, and her friend Leosette Canoy.

“Thank you is not enough,” said Canoy Thursday afternoon.

“When we were first rescued people were saying it was 50/50 for me, and I am here today,” she said.

“We are strangers to this community, but its love and heart is with us.”

The pair were viciously attacked last month while walking through the Bear Mountain Nordic Ski Association trails.

Shurtliff also thanked Canoy. “Thank you for saving my life.”

Conservation officers noted on October 3 an adult male black bear charged the pair’s group, severely injuring the women.

Before organizer Ed Mah presented more than $30K to each of the women, the Kids Club of Dawson Creek presented the pair with $3,423 from a community hot dog sale.

“Stay strong, be strong, and get healthy,” said Mah to the pair.

A pair of online fundraisers for the pair brought in and additional $18,000 and $17,000 each. editor@dcdn.ca

BC Supreme Court action concerning vote buying during Pouce mayoral election

Former Pouce Coupe mayor Lorraine Michetti has made an application in British Columbia’s BC Supreme Court asking for the village’s mayoral results be thrown out.

Michetti is accusing current mayor and 2022 election winner Danielle Veach with vote buying during the election - by purchasing refreshments, and food at a campaign event for voters.

British Columbia’s Local Government Act is quite clear regarding the practice.

Division 18, subsection 161 of the LGA is very clear in the application of purchases for potential voters during an election campaign.

Voter Buying - 161 (1)In this section, “inducement” includes money, gift, valuable consideration, refreshment, entertainment, office, placement, employment and any other benefit of any kind.

(2) A person must not pay, give, lend or procure inducement for any of the following purposes:

(a) to induce a person to vote or

refrain from voting;

(b) to induce a person to vote or refrain from voting for or against a particular candidate;

Michetti has been before the Supreme Court previously over the last two years – with the court twice reversing a pair of village council attempts to remove Michetti of portfolio positions.

Veach was elected in a byelection last year – and defeated Michetti by a handful of votes last month during Pouce Coupe’s October general election.

Veach has noted she will be fighting the allegations.

The Dawson Creek Mirror has had discussions with representatives with the Ministry of Municipal Affairs regarding the Local Government Act.

“If a person believes someone has committed an election offence (vote buying, intimidation or voting when not entitled), they should contact the police,” said officials to the Mirror late Wednesday afternoon. editor@dcdn.ca

Captain America, Cyborg director Albert Pyun passes on

Albert Pyun - the director of Sword & the Sorcerer, Cyborg, Captain America, Nemesis, and more –passed away on Saturday. He was 69.

Vanity Fair has just called him the ‘auteur of the VHS era,’ and I cannot agree more.

Pyun worked with legends Burt Reynolds, James Coburn, and Kris Kristofferson, Jean Claude Van Damme, Charlie Sheen, Courteney Cox, Ice T, Highlander’s Christopher Lambert, Salinger, Blade Runner’s Rutger Hauer, Andrew Dice Clay, and more.

Albert Pyun was my friend. I caught his very first movie when it came out in 1982.

CUT TO:

Come 2018 I had reached out to him after he put out a call for movie soundtrack composers. It looked like he was working with Christopher Lambert and I couldn’t resist.

Come 2021, I had provided Albert with 40 or so minutes of soundtrack material that we then carved down to about 20 minutes for his latest film –Cyborg: Rise of the Flesh Eaters.

I cannot tell you how inspiring it was to be working with a hero of mine – one I had been following since I was four years old. He would send me Hans Zimmer clips and Tangerine Dream type stuff for points of reference. Right in my wheelhouse.

I must have played the ‘Michael

He sent me an early cut of one of his last two flicks. More dialogue driven than most of his work.

Last year Albert also gave me invaluable feedback on the first Sukunka trailer editing as well, just as he was picking up a lifetime Legacy award from the Hawaii International Film Festival.

Pyun’s Sword & the Sorcerer is arguably the best sword and sandal film of all time with the exception of Conan the Barbarian. Pyun was in on the ground floor of so many genres.

Albert’s ‘Pyuniverse’ is also firmly entrenched in the same sci-fi field as Blade Runner with his works Nemesis and Cyborg.

Pyun worked with American Ninja Michael Dudikoff as well as Van Damme; also a Lois Lane and Bond girl - all before they all caught onthat says something.

In the mid 1980s Albert was in production on a Spider-Man film about 15 years before Sam Raimi and Tobey. He had a direct sequel to Masters of the Universe and HeMan going long before Hollywood and Kevin Smith started adding to it.

He made a Captain America flick 15 years in the 1990s before the Russo Brothers did with Kevin Feige. That’s cutting-edge man.

As Quentin Tarantino was bringing

back David Carradine with Kill Bill 1 + 2 – Pyun was also shooting with the same Kung Fu actor. Pyun worked with Burt Reynolds a full 20 years before Tarantino cast him in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Speaking of filmic needle drops and music usage - Pyun ranks with Tarantino.

If you haven’t caught any of Albert Pyun’s work – you should. He made 52 movies. Some great, many good, some otherwise.

He has two more movie that was working on when he passed. Let’s get on those and extend the Pyuniverse beyond Albert. I bet he’d get a kick out of that.

Learning to fly - flight training in and above Dawson Creek

It takes 25 hours in the air to earn a recreational pilot permit, 45 hours if you would like to have a private pilot license.

Sealand Flight has been operating since 2014, with a Flight Training Unit available right here in Dawson Creek.

The outfit provides pilot training, and groundschool work for both private pilot licensing and commercial licences.

A Dawson Creek connection

Sealand Flight’s owner and founder is Bill Alder, who was a Dawson Creek resident from 1950-1980.

“Bill’s dad was in the army and helped build the Alaska Highway. Bill has been doing aircraft maintenance through his company Sealand for over 40 years in Campbell River,” says Ian Lamont, Chief Flight Instructor.

“He is very interested in making sure young people have access to flight training opportunities.”

Sealand DC recently brought a new flight instructor on deck, Mayank Kushwaha.

“I started wanting to fly when I was in high school, I thought maybe for the military. I realized flight training and getting a commercial license was the way to go,” Kushwaha says, adding he picked up his commercial license in 2019.

To be a commercial pilot – 200 hours of

flight time are needed – with 230 required to be a flight instructor. “It takes a patient person, someone who can remain calm, and not get anxious,” he says.

This week saw Sealand take the Dawson Creek Mirror up in the air and hand over control for a bit of a 45 minute flight in a 1986 Cessna 172P.

“We have been trying to hire a class 3 flight instructor (not a beginner) since our last one moved on in June.  So we are very happy to have Mayank set up and flying,” adds Lamont.

In addition to Dawson Creek, Sealand has locations in Port Hardy, Powell River, Campbell River, Courtenay and Qualicum Beach.

Volunteers wanted for seniors survey

In conjunction with the Senior’s Advocacy office –volunteers are wanted to solicit feedback and opinions from Dawson Creek seniors in care.

“It would be having conversations on everything from quality of life, to their day-to-day, to food, and more, getting their opinions and feedback,” says Emily Jurek regional engagement lead with

the project. Jurek says the survey work is in addition to, and follows work done in 2016.

“We are looking to train people to survey the approximately 29,000 in care in the province.”

The commitment is 40 hours (including training) to be completed over a 6-8 week period. Volunteers will be

South Peace Senior High School 1970 to 1975 reunion

planned for 2023

School and graduation reunions can be wonderful events. They allow former school mates from near and far, many who have not seen each other for years of event decades to reconnect and once again enjoy current and past friendships.

There is going to be a big one held in Dawson Creek on June 9/10, 2023.

A group of former students who attended South Peace Senior High School between the years of 1970 to 1975 were brought together by Kathie Braden Laforge to plan this major undertaking.

For the last six months the organizing committee has been meeting online and working on many things to make this reunion a reality.

The biggest and most

challenging job has been tracking down former students to inform them that this reunion planning is in process. This group has created an Facebook group, SPSS High School Reunion 1970-75. Between this site and countless contacts that have been made the response has been terrific. Almost 400 individuals have already indicated their interest or commitment to attend.

In addition the committee has secured the very popular local band Pilot, that played together “back in the day” to provide entertainment. The curling rink will be the venue for the opening registration and Wine and Cheese on Friday evening and also the banquet, social and dance on Saturday.

By early January, 2023, the committee will be forwarding the event information,

registration and payment form to everyone for whom they have been able to find contact information. If you happen to know anyone who has been missed - contact Kathie Braden Laforge at klaforge@hotmail. com if they are interested in attending.

Other members of the committee include Cindy Delainey Anderson, Peggy Carberry Benoit, Joe Judge, Otto Krauskopf, Diana Judge Mitchell, Cindy Johnston Olsen, Trina Petrick Sims, and Penny Trail.

Organizers expect the weekend to be a huge one in the community - and know people and businesses of DC will welcome all former students back with open arms.

great competition. There really is no comparison between the two. The Northern Classic really brings about fresh new faces and young people who are up and coming to the sport. There was a young man who is also from the Peace region no more then 16 years old who deadlift 600lbs. That an incredible amount of weight for someone so young.

Q - Did you pick up anything in terms of competition from PG to use moving forward in your day to day workouts?

brings new and exciting things for me. This comp was about learning new skills and drills for bench. As a women bench is the hardest skill for us to grow in and this time around I picked apart a few ladies brains to see what their regime for bench looked like and how the skills differed from mine.

mass. The shift in my brain from Comp season to off season comes with open arms. This season for me was a long one with worlds and 3 regular competitions my body is ready for a deload.

Dawson Creek powerlifter April Baldassarre is returning from competition with more iron around her neck.

Baldassarre picked up a first place division win at the Northern Classic in Prince George, held Nov. 21 pulling numbers of 181 lbs in bench press, a squat of 336lbs and deadlift 363lbs, for an overall total of 880lbs.

April - Every comp

Q - What’s up next for you? Is there an “off season” for powerlifting, or is it pretty much 365/year round?

April - There is an off season for sure, and I’m in it. The next few months will be about building strength and increasing muscle

Baldassarre picked up a Silver medal earlier this year in Manchester, UK at the 2022 AWPC World Championships, and expects to ramp up in February for May qualifying.

“Worlds next year is in Louisiana and I’m so excited for it,” she says.

Q: How was the training for this competition?

April - After coming back from Manchester, my coach Chris and I got to work building up strength in my back and legs. My nutrionist Amanda and I started working towards cutting weight for the Northern Classic in hopes of making a lower weight category.

Q - Is it a case of peaking

April - Consistency is the name of the game. Coming back from Manchester I thought I had peaked. But was pleasantly surprised to notice that my strength over the last few weeks was increasing exponentially. I had managed to pull almost 50lbs more over all then I did in Manchester. Chris and I are very happy with the progress. In the Northern Classic this past weekend I managed to bench 181lbs, squat 336lbs and deadlift 363lbs for an over all total of 880lbs.

Q - How was your experience in PG compared to the UK earlier in the year?

April - The competitions in Prince George are always so amazing. The strength and power that is displayed at these competitions is unreal. The owners Mike and Tara Webber always put on a

Others may not want to hear the truth, but you’re still going to offer it up, Virgo. Forge ahead even if you may lose some friends in the process.

Fay Wilson went to be with her Lord November 23, 2022 at 59 years of age. Fay was the first child born to Don & Ella Wilson born in 1963. The oldest grandchild of Bert and Verna Rattliffe of Bonanza, Alberta and a welcome addition to Alec and Beulah Wilson’s family, of Abbotsford, BC. Fay was a typical “oldest” child, known to be responsible, an overachiever in school, and well liked amongst her peers. She grew up in a family that believed the Bible was God’s word and on August 6th, 1974, Fay chose to make the Lord Jesus Christ the one she would follow throughout her life.

At her high school graduation, the manager of the TD bank watched as she walked away with a large number of awards. Afterwards, he approached her and asked her what her plans were after graduation. She told him she would get a job and work for a year or so; in order to pay for her university. He offered her a job and thus began her career in banking. She worked for 2+ years at the TD and over 25 years at the Royal Bank in Dawson Creek with breaks for studies at Trinity Western University, working in Japan for a year, and travel. Fay loved working at the bank and maintained friendships with people from both banks.

The Wilson family traveled regularly to destinations in BC, Alberta, Washington, and California, but after university Fay caught the “travel bug” doing 8 countries in 21 days in Europe, multiple trips to Japan, Hawaii, cruises to Alaska, as well as Australia, back to the UK and France, and all but 1 province and 1 territory in Canada as well as more of the mainland USA. Always traveling with friends and family she enjoyed life and she always had a book in her backpack to read along the way. In 2009, Fay was diagnosed with advanced Rheumatoid Arthritis and life started to slow down. Surgeries, hospitals, and physiotherapy followed, but she still enjoyed time with friends, traveling, baking, and was an avid reader. The medication for the RA caused a rare blood disorder, so she was changed to a different type of chemo treatment. When Covid-19 fears caused all of the swimming pools to closed down she no longer had access to water exercise, which was the best thing to keep her active, so this was a big hit to her mobility and independence. In May of this year, cancer was detected during a routine blood test. The blood disorder, caused by chemo, had caused her to develop an aggressive form of leukemia. A trip to Edmonton and new treatments only served to make things worse for her. She died knowing that while this life was over, her eternal life with Christ was continuing. While Fay had lived most of her life in Dawson Creek, she had moved to Sexsmith with her sister Dawn in 2019, so that they could be closer to family; especially their mother, who had suffered from a stroke in 2017. She is known to many through her time leading AWANA, playing clarinet in the DC Symphonette, working with the Cancer Society, Alzheimer Society, and the Peace Pregnancy Support Centre.

Fay’s funeral will be held at Bethel Pentecostal Church on December 2nd at 11:00 in Dawson Creek, British Columbia. There will be a viewing from 10:00 ~ 10:45 before the service begins.
